“It’s the Klobuchar miracle,” I say out loud.

Watching some super early returns.

“Klomentum,” Meade says.

UPDATE: At 6:46 CT, Gloria Borger said “Klomentum” on CNN.

UPDATE 2: “Klomentum” has been around since before Meade independently coined it. Not trying to claim first.

UPDTE 3: Michael Bennet and Andrew Yang have dropped out.

AND: Steyer is out. ADDED: I heard that on tv, but I am not seeing it in print, so I doubt it.

ALSO: My son John looks back on the Yang performance in the debates.

The Left in Hennepin County (where she was the Chief Prosecutor) hates Amy Kolbuchar. Yes. I'd like to see Yang and Gabbard run on an Independent ticket in 2024. They're both too good--and too sensible--for the Democrats. I'll be voting for Trump again in 2020 but not sure what kind of GOP candidate will be stepping forth in 2024. If it's another swamp-logged Neocon, I'll switch. I'd probably vote for Cruz, though...

Who knows what the phony Joe interest was all about. A combination of investors hoping to keep the Democrat party corporatist/Clintonian and the far-right seeing him as too old, white and dopey to not veer too far from their demands. Joe never got very far in a primary before... he'd usually put his foot in his mouth way before half the states voted. The only reason he's able to run right now has to do with his VP history, and that only existed because he had old white guy blue collar credentials for making the black president less "scary." Joe was the guy who took his metal lunchbox to work and let the boss know that the black guy on the job was ok. He's served his purpose; he's out. Done. He was never in. Amazing that anyone ever thought this single purpose of his in American politics made him a fitting choice for taking on a psychotic Republican. Although it was interesting that he was just as touchy feely as President Pie Hole but with some decency in him as well. I guess that's why they wanted him to run in 2020. That and that he'd do whatever the insurance and finance industries asked of him. Bye bye Joe. Maybe I'll see you at the next biker rally.

Mark said, "And what's with every candidate going by their first name now?"

Interesting phenomenon. And it parallels the tendency in recent years to call every politician by their nickname.

In the last century, it was Joseph Biden and Richard Durbin and Charles Schumer. Somewhere along the line, they became "Joe, Dick, and Chuck".

I'm guessing the informality trend started with Jimmy Carter but took off under Bill Clinton. Vice President Albert Gore became Al Gore. When Cheney served under Bush 41, he was Richard. Running with Bush 43, he became Dick.

Can anyone who is old enough imagine

President Jack Kennedy
President Dick Nixon
President Ron Reagan

The two Bushes and Obama didn't come with folksy nicknames, of course. And Donald Trump bucks the trend, thank goodness.

Interestingly Monmouth had a special New Hampshire poll this morning which had Klobuchar in third place but with only 11%.

Polls are having a lot of trouble defining an accurate sample which may reflect indecisive voters or more likely reflects an underlying political failure by the Democratic party. Not Trump, not socialists - but who are they? Strangely blurred.

She's more composed than Biden or Bernie, and perhaps she's not as robotic or rehearsed as Buttigieg. If she's the winner here, I have the feeling we'll be learning many new things about her and not all of them will be edifying. Still, there are definitely worse choices within the Democratic field. Turnout is actually quite a bit lower than 2016 given the fact that there was no contest on the Republican side this year to draw independents to that primary- remember, independents make up almost half the registrations in New Hampshire and can vote in either primary. I would have expected the at least 50% turnout for the combined race, but it looks to be about 40%. It will be interesting to see what the turnout actually was for registered Democrats in the state- I predict it will be 10% lower than it was in 2016 even with the higher vote totals.

New Hampshire is pretty rural state, but I noted earlier that Sanders was really strong in the 3 largest cities in New Hampshire, Buttuvwxyz stronger in what passes for suburban New Hampshire, while Sanders did better once you get to the boondock precincts. Exit polling of minorities was sparse in NH, but what there was showed Sanders with the strongest support of the top 3 candidates.

You dumb fuck- we won't know what Democratic turnout is for a bit. We know the vote totals are higher in the Democratic Primary this year than 2016, but almost half of NH registrations are Independents who can vote in either primary. The metric you are looking for is turnout among registered Democrats, and based on the results of 2016, I predict registered Democrats turned out at a lower rate than 2016 given the Republican race had half the vote totals it had in 2016.

Drago said...

Yancey Ward said...

This would square with the Iowa Caucus turnout which is closed to all but registered Democrats- there turnout was down significantly.

For the record, Nevada is also closed to all but Democrats, and South Carolina is a fully open primary. So I predict that in Nevada, turnout is down and in South Carolina the Democratic Primary will see a surge of vote totals due to the lack of a competitive race on the Republican side.

I think a (muted) message that the Democrats who are actually winning can take to the butt-hurt establishmentarians, the Chris Matthewses, the Clintons, the other assholes boosting Biden and the billionaires, is to call them parasites.

For years, corporatists have hijacked the populist FDR party of American Democrats and used the veneer of all they've done for the poor and the neglected in our country while perverting it for their own Wall Street purposes. They don't actually do anything for the party politically, or the country nationally. They actually lose the party representation when they're in charge.

So if they're so big on a conservative economic message, it's time for the Democratic populists to finally call out the corporatists and name them for what they are: Political Parasites. Living high off the hog on the Democratic message while never actually doing anything for the actual people out there who have been scraping by and seeing their incomes and earnings and benefits and life quality declining for decades.

It's finally time for the Democrats to ditch the corporate Clintonian political parasites sucking the blood out of their party, and to return to their FDR roots. FDR. The Democrat. The Great president who actually made America as great as all the old time Trumptarians remember it.

That's what we're going to do.

Amy Klobuchar is Huey Lewis. Huey was sane, mature, responsible and sang songs with titles like "Happy to Be Stuck With You" and "Hip To Be Square." If you were young and clean-cut and relatively conservative back in the 80s, you should have loved Huey. But probably you hated him. You should have hated the rock and roll wild men, but you didn't. So it is with Amy.

Klobuchar seems like the sanest, most mature and responsible of the Democrats, but for some reason you might run away if you saw her coming. Something about her voice and manner reminds me of teachers I didn't like. Not the especially annoying teacher - that was Elizabeth Warren - but just somebody annoying and boring.

Gloria Borger used to be somebody. She was on a lot of political talk shows. Now when you say her name I think of the 70s disco singer. "I will survive." "Never Can Say Goodbye." "I Am What I Am."
