February 18, 2020

In the new NPR/Marist poll, Bernie is at 31% and second-place goes to Bloomberg, who gets 19%, enough to put him in tomorrow's debate.

Bloomberg needed a 4th poll giving him at least 10% nationally, and now he has it.

3rd and 4th places go to Biden (15%) and Warren (12%), and both of them are moving downward — Biden down 9 points and Warren down 5. Buttigieg and Klobuchar are both below 10% — the cut-off point for qualifying for the debate if you're qualifying on national polls.

(You can also qualify for this debate by hitting 12% in 2 polls from SC or Nevada or by having already won a delegate. Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden have all won delegates — 23, 21, 8, 7, and 6, respectively.)

High stakes for tomorrow's debate! This is where people will decide if Bloomberg deserves to become the focus of all the stop-Bernie action. If he doesn't, that action will continue to be diffused over 5 candidates, unless one of the other 4 — Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, or Biden — suddenly emerges as the one to back. It's hard to see how anyone other than Bloomberg has a shot at becoming The One, so the anti-Bernie anti-Trumpsters have got to be looking at Bloomberg with an absurd amount of expectation.

It's hard to see how he can do well enough in the debate for that to happen. I think the 5 — that is, all the Democratic non-Bernies — will simply try to keep a majority away from Bernie and position themselves to win at the convention. That's 5 months away. And then there are only 3 1/2 months before the election. Democrats need a way to get through the next 5 months without devolving into brand-destroying chaos. Unless Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden get together and pick one of them to go forward, the answer is going to be Bloomberg.

Unless he's awful at that debate.

And won't Buttigieg, Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden all try to make him look awful?

I would advise Buttigieg, Warren, Klobuchar, and Biden to get together and pick one. But they need to do it soon. If I picture those 4 huddling and really trying to decide which of the 4 of them should take up the banner of moderate anti-Trumpism, I see the choice as Amy Klobuchar. She's the best age (59), she's female, and she's got a long record in the Senate. But that's too sensible, isn't it? The Democrats are so keyed up to fight that they're not going to accept mere sensibleness.

And yet mere sensibleness is also all Bloomberg purports to be. But he's spending billions to make that feel good, good enough to let go of the crazy excitement that is Bernie Sanders.

And Donald Trump.

Here's an article at Politico about Bloomberg's debate prep:
[H]is team is working to get him to project comfort and composure in the line of fire, while portraying him as the toughest Democrat to take on Donald Trump. Howard Wolfson, the veteran Democratic strategist who joined Bloomberg’s orbit in 2009 after working on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential race, is playing the role of Sanders... Wolfson joked that his inspiration for Sanders came from watching “Statler and Waldorf,” the cantankerous elderly Muppets who lob critiques from their balcony seats...
How much did Bloomie pay him for that?
Bloomberg is trying to hone a crisp and energetic appeal to voters that will contrast with Biden— another white, male septuagenarian on stage, according to advisers. Other potential pitfalls for Bloomberg are his tendency to use dated language — words like “bawdy,” for instance — to dismiss concerns about his financial news service’s work culture for female employees....
So.... understanding the sexual harassment problem as a problem of using "dated language" and understanding one's opponents in terms of really old TV puppet shows. You can have billions of dollars to spend but you can only buy what's out there for sale. And Bloomberg — who, if elected, will make a lot of hiring decisions — found Wolfson, the man who helped Hillary lose.

Klobuchar potentially puts Minnesota in play, but that's also true if she's Bloomberg's running mate. And that's why no one is going to attack him too hard -- none of the other non-Sanders candidates really think they can win, and they want to be VP or in a Cabinet position in case some other Democrat somehow beats Trump. So they can't burn any bridges.

Trump didn't have to make that calculation in 2016. He knew that no other Republican would hire him, and he didn't want to be Secretary of Whatever anyway. So he was freed to be as brutal as he needed to be to kill off his opponents.

Jersey Fled said...

Bloomberg's appeal is that some people think he has enough money to beat Trump. Nobody thought he was a very good mayor back when he was actually mayor. And he has a troubling habit of making condescending statements about anyone who isn't exactly like himself. Add in the fact that he doesn't have much appeal to Blacks and I can't see him winning in November.

JPS said...

Temujin,

"Do you suppose Republicans could be pulling an 'Operation Chaos' by telling pollsters they like Bloomberg?"

They could, but I think it's likelier than non-radical-left Dems are scared of Sanders getting the nomination, and with the perception fading that Biden could beat Trump, they look to Bloomberg: Forceful, rich as hell, hates Trump, decent record as a mayor (if you discount his loathsome authoritarian tendencies, which to them are a plus). Sure, heterodox on the issues but maybe they can spin that as center-appeal, plus sound on the issues they care about most.

Such seems to be the thinking of the liberals I know who are pulling for him, anyway.

I don't see him winning. I don't think his appeal is broad-based enough. His height is a weakness he's not secure enough to shrug off, his manner will be off-putting to many. I think they're fooling themselves if they think they've found their secret anti-Trump weapon. If I were a Democrat, I might just be hoping for Klobuchar's rise, given the alternatives.

Since I'm decidedly not a Democrat, I'm nursing the mean hope that after all this plays out, the "centrists" in the party convince themselves to draft Hillary. Hey, she won more votes than Trump last time! We'll see if they really do think they were cheated, or if they understand that she was a bad candidate and this time, with the fear of the unknown removed, she would lose big.

And I don't see any evidence that the Democrat elite, nor their voters, agree with that approach. There are any number of channels to use for this purpose to get around campaign finance laws. "Grassroots" organizations for one.

Under the circumstances it may be worthwhile to try the experiment. Probably less risky than personal politics.

The similarities now to "Trump/too many candidates" in 2016 are signs of a mutual deterioration in the organizational capacity of the parties. However, there seem to me to be differences, too. Trump, for all his bombast was appealing BACK to the center in relation to Republican conservative ideology, whereas Bernie appeals to a radical leftism at odds with the center. And, for all their "moderation" most of the other candidates have pushed left radically this time - e.g. Pete unable to name a single restriction on abortion he feels is justified, all of them embracing radical "transformations" of one sort or another for the economic system. This would seem to give Bloomberg a real opening. But it also has been giving Biden a real opening, which he's squandered due to bumbling, but in my view even worse, in his refusal to stand up firmly for the more centrist positions of the Clinton and Obama eras. It began with his fumbling inability to slap Kamala down for her idiotic school bussing race bating ploy. He should be defending STRONGLY against the usual p.c. intersectional eat-your-own gambits. But he flinched. Bloomberg seems set to flinch too. So it comes down to who the heck knows?

The Trump Organization is a holding company. Through it Trump is sole or majority owner of dozens of subsidiary companies employing an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 employees. This is a common way that real estate development companies organize.

BTW the press has no problem calling employees of these subsidiaries "Trump employees" if one of them turns out to be an illegal.

I don't see Trump as the man of the common people. However, unlike Bloomberg (or Zuckerberg or Soros, for that matter) Trump has lived the kind of life a lot of common people imagine they'd live if they were billionaires. He has the gold-festooned apartment, an exotic supermodel wife, golf resorts, celebrity gigs, etc. He indulges his whims and really doesn't seem to care what other people think about it. He has fun. Bloomberg and some of these other billionaires seem to want to take over the world. They're cold and serious. They're the kind of men people worry they'd become if they were billionaires.

Bloomberg doesnt need to flinch. Probably.
All he needs to say is "I am here". And buy, buy, buy.

Including rounding up all alternate funding sources. If he looks like he will be successful it would be risky for others in his position to bet against him. He can hurt them if he wins, and he is likely to do so. Nobody will hurt them if he loses. So it looks good in game theory, backing him reduces their risk, with no downside.

If he wants to spend enough and make enough private promises and threats he can probably corner the political finance market. He stands to lose a very great deal personally, but at 78 - you can't take it with you, nor play the game much longer. That sort of wealth is its own plane of existence. His children are going to be extremely wealthy in any case (doubtless their inheritance is predetermined, lavish, and firewalled), and I have not heard that they want to play the game in that arcane dimension that requires $60 Billion. So why not, becoming President of the USA is a sort of ultimate prize and a permanent indelible inscription in history.

If 90% of the political system, all the infrastructure of institutions and service providers are for sale, such as the MSM and other communication channels, and they are, then all he needs to do is buy.

This post makes it sound like 4 candidates other than Bernie Sanders and Bloomberg are in a hopeless muddle with no feasible way for any of them to stand out.

But Warren shouldn't even be in a discussion of anti-Sanders candidates. Warren and Sanders are in the same lane, competing for the same kinds of voters. In that race within the race, Sanders is decisively winning and Warren seems to be going nowhere.

Biden should drop out because of his devastating losses so far. His current polls aren't a good measure, since he's been severely underperforming relative to polls. The possibility that he might still win some states in the future doesn't justify staying in.

Pete Buttigieg has won more delegates than any other Democratic candidate. Pete Buttigieg apparently won the most delegates in Iowa, and he certainly did far better than anyone other than Sanders. Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders tied in New Hampshire with the same number of delegates.

(The nominee is typically chosen based on delegates, not the "popular vote" or anything else.)

From 2000 to 2016, every Democrat who won the Iowa caucuses went on to win the nomination. And the only time anyone has ever won the Democratic nomination without being in the top 3 in Iowa was the exception that proves the general rule: Sen. Tom Harkin overwhelmingly winning his own state in 1992.

New Hampshire has been a less reliable barometer: the last two Democratic nominees lost New Hampshire.

If you don't want Bernie Sanders to win, the clear alternative for the Democrats to unite around is Pete Buttigieg.

The only caveat I would offer to that belief is this- the DNC might not care what the primary voters do, and pick Bloomberg with his 20% of the vote after South Carolina.

I have seen the beginnings or entirities of about 1000 Bloomberg ads in the last two months (I usually skip ads when given the choice), and I think I am a relatively normal person in this regard- after the first 10 or so, all future television/on-line popup ads drive me to actively hate your product.

Yancey Ward said...

I wrote yesterday- if after Super Tuesday it really is Sanders vs Bloomberg the rest of the way, then Sanders will have his very best shot at the nomination (the same also applies to Bloomberg for obvious reasons). Browndog,

Lots of ads are "easy" to watch, but no one likes to watch good ads over and over- they are time wasters even the first time you see it. If Trump ran ads at this rate, I would resent it, and if he ran them in a primary, I might well vote for anyone else as revenge for wasting my time like that.

Now, if Bloomberg wants to produce his ads with Victoria's Secret models as visual aids, I might change my tune.

Not saying Hillary would have won the GE in 2008

i'm saying that the ONLY reason why Hillary trailed Obama in the delegate totals (which is why Obama won the 2008 Primary) is because of those post-Super Tuesday Caucuses.

If the Clinton team had been on the ball in 2008, she could have gone to the Convention effectively tied. At which point "her Super Delegates" could and would have put her over the top.

Whether she would have won the General election is irrelevant. Her team muffed the Primary

So, that would explain why everyone's doing better, but the upper income brackets are doing "more" better. Oh, wait, no, in the Trump economy the jobs in the lower income brackets are showing the bigger raises.

Boy, that Trump! He's such an awesome con man! He's got people thinking that just because his policies are leading to them getting jobs, getting better jobs, and getting better raises, that means Trump actually cares about them!

What a bunch of hicks!

Almost always last to the thread out here in Oregon.

I like the Bloomberg/Adams ticket. A white Jewish dwarf billionaire at the top and an angry fat Black woman in the VP slot. Killer demographics. Oh please. A Bernie/Donald race would top that, though, I think.

Sorry, I forget to count the tens of thousands of workers employed by subcontractors Trump doesn't pay. My bad.

Name one. Let's get to the bottom of this atrocity.

Wait. Are you insinuating that Howard is repeating lies his masters feed him and supports people who are just using him because he is stupid?

I am curious what exactly the democrats have actually delivered that Howard actually wants.

Is it open borders? Infanticide? Crushing the working class? Identity politics?

He just seems like a old loser who attached himself to a party and can't admit he was snookered.

Explains the projection of 2/3's of his posts.
