Last year's comedy is this year's seriousness.

I'm annoyed that neither picture links to the article to allow for actual comparison.

I'd throw anybody who came to fight into the front yard and shut the door behind me.
Maybe that's why nobody does this sort of stupid stuff.

Has anybody seen this sort of behavior?
Heard about it from reliable sources, and not including Brian Stelter?

Or is this all just a Twitter phenomenon?

Ignoring the plagiarism, which is obnoxious, the folks that published that article as a serious piece are just assholes. They recommend you pick a fight with family members that are hosting you or that you invited to your home for a meal? FFS, get over yourselves.

Here's the link. It's Elie Mystal scraping the bottom of the barrel (or circling the drain, whichever image you prefer).

It seems impossible to imagine an SJW position so absurd that it will not become reality in the next 18 months. If Jonathan Swift were writing today, Irish children would be on the menu of every hip restaurant in Brooklyn.

Very funny. Much comedic wit in so few words. Unlike the Nation's drawn-out unfunny joke. And you know "She" is British because she says "Christmas" instead of "Holiday".

Lovely.

"You can’t be expected to know the details of every whack-a-doodle conspiracy theory your family has heard from state-run media in this country."

-- So, wait, did I miss that this piece was satire or is it just crazy town?

Matt Sablan said...

"Republicans win because they are able to functionally silo people in their own homogeneous communities, with their own biased news sources."

... But: Even Haidt acknowledges that Conservatives are better at understanding outside their silos than liberals.

"Trump supporters do not like to be called “racist.” They have no problem actually being racist or supporting the policies of racism and white supremacy, but they dislike being called what they are."

-- I mean, my problem is that too many Trump supporters get called racist for things that aren't racist. I don't mind calling the KKK racists; they are! But, you can't just call *everyone* a racist.

"We stand on the precipice of losing our American character to the forces of authoritarianism and bigotry."

American character - because Americans were so less bigoted before when that character was being forged.

Why is The Nation using white peoples celebrating Thanksgiving?

CWJ said...

"You might not like conflict, but if you choose to break bread with Trump supporters and climate change deniers because you happen to be related to them, then conflict is required. Anything less is appeasement, and we’ve had far too much of that these past few years. So stiffen your spine, rehearse your talking points, and get ready to fry some turkeys in your family with your righteousness."

Oh hell. Cut out the middle step and just put them in the cattle cars already.

Stupid auto correct. White people.

That's why some people can't see the humor in the Babylon Bee: reportage, not satire, is the comedy of our age. It's a great big emperor's new clothing pageant.

The real scandal is that Elie Mystal still gets published.

"3. NONPOLITICAL TOPICS ARE ALSO POLITICAL"

And there it is.

The grandmothers in my family would kick any member of the Nation’s staff.

A few years ago, one of my nieces was explaining to all of us that eating meat was cruel and wrong. Everyone else was arguing with her, but I told her I thought she was correct and that her side would eventually win, and make meat-eating illegal. Which would be too bad for cows, because they would become extinct. That gave her something to chew on.

I’m here to eat turkey, not go to your church.

Glad to see liberals advocating behavior like this. It can only strengthen family bonds and result in stronger communities.

The articles are "remarkably" similar because they all live in the same thought bubbles and use group thinking. It is similar when you all walk in lock step and are not allowed to think other thoughts.

They only see one side of the coin and refuse to admit that others can have different views.

Don't be surprised when you are dis-invited to Christmas Dinner when all you want to do is force arguments upon people.

That's white supremacy.

So you're wishing for a full blown "punchup"? With grandma? No sweetheart, that's called punching down.

Having read Mystal's article, there seems to be a good chance it is entirely tongue-in-cheek. At least the charitable reading. Otherwise it's unintentional self-parody.

Despite a few very objectionable and racist lefty comments I heard at the family Thanksgiving dinner, I managed to maintain my midwestern niceness. Concealed carry helped.

Wince said...

For many on the left, grievance and condescension should be like a schizophrenic voice in your head that you just cannot silence.

daskol said...

Mystal's article is, sadly, not tongue in cheek. He's to be laughed at, not with.

Seeing Red said...

Tolerance.

J. Farmer said...

My family's holiday tradition is to bitch about whoever is in power. So not much political guff at the dinner table. I try my damndest to start arguments and sew conflict, but everyone is far too smart to bite. Pity.

Temujin said...

Leftists are soulless, humorless people who decry one person's God while creating their own gods and throwing themselves prostrate in front of them. They then yell at the rest of humanity if they don't also throw themselves down in front of those most favored gods.

In time, they will have more enemies than followers.

I got into it with a NYT Times liberal & two young Sanders supporters at Thanksgiving dinner. It was actually a good discussion. Went on for over two hours & no raised voices.

I think they were actually quite impressed at how well I could, as Devil's Advocate, state & argue the positions of the Intersectional Left. As Bernie supporters, they were more old line class socialists, & interestingly, had as little sympathy for race-mongering as does any conservative.

There's never been a "mistake" that was in Trump's favor. That's a strong argument.

Twitter would be better-named Spitter.

Bit disappointed that the Nation's family pic didn't have the woke young bitch slapping their elders in a jovial holiday manner.

I'm eternally grateful not to be part of traditions involving J Farmer's family.

I always enjoy a good punch up over AGW or Trump. I invariably make the antagonists wish they were having an enema with cold water instead.
