"Trump Publicly Urges China to Investigate the Bidens/President Trump made a similar, but private, request of the president of Ukraine, an episode that has sparked an impeachment inquiry."

The NYT reports.
“China should start an investigation into the Bidens,” Mr. Trump said Thursday as he left the White House to travel to Florida.... The call for China to investigate Mr. Biden and his son Hunter’s business dealings there came as the first witness appeared on Capitol Hill to be interviewed by House investigators as part of an impeachment inquiry into the president’s request in a phone call for help from President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

Mr. Trump has defended his conversation with Mr. Zelensky as “perfect” even after a reconstructed transcript of the call was released that showed him seeking help from Ukraine in investigating the Bidens. And he doubled down on his request on Thursday....

“I would say that President Zelensky, if it were me, I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens,” Mr. Trump said. “Because nobody has any doubt that they weren’t crooked.”...
I think Trump's statement (about Zelensky) is an effort to clarify something that seemed evasive in his remarks from the Oval Office yesterday. Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason asked, "What do you or what did you want President Zelensky to do with regard to Joe and Hunter Biden?" And Trump rambled without answering the question asked, then got super-defensive when the reporter repeated the unanswered question:
Q What did you want about Biden? What did you want him to look into on Biden?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Look, Biden and his son are stone-cold crooked. And you know it. His son walks out with millions of dollars. The kid knows nothing. You know it, and so do we. Go ahead. Ask a question now.

Q The question, sir, was: What did you want President Zelensky to do about Vice President Biden and his son, Hunter?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Are you talking to me?

Q Yeah. It was a just a follow-up of what I just asked you, sir.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: (Inaudible) finish with me. Listen. Listen. Are you ready? We have the President of Finland. Ask him a question.

Q I have one for him. I just wanted to follow up on the one that I asked you, which was —

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Did you hear me?

Q — what did you want him to —

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Did you hear me?

Q Yes, sir.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Ask him a question.

Q I will, but —

PRESIDENT TRUMP: I’ve given you a long answer. Ask this gentleman a question. Don’t be rude.

Q No, sir. I don’t want to be rude. I just wanted you to have a chance to answer the question that I asked you.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: I’ve answered everything.
Wrong.*
It’s a whole hoax. And you know who’s playing into the hoax? People like you and the fake news media that we have in this country. And I say, in many cases, the “corrupt media” — because you’re corrupt. Much of the media in this country is not just fake, it’s corrupt. And you have some very fine people, too — great journalists, great reporters. But, to a large extent, it’s corrupt and it’s fake. Ask the President of Finland a question, please.

Q Okay. I’ll move on now....
That was very awkward, and I said out loud as I heard it in real time: "He didn't answer the question about Biden." I hated the abuse of the reporter who was completely correct to bring Trump back to the original question and not let him get away with just blabbing long enough that casual listeners forget the question. So I think, listening to today's statement, that Trump knew he hadn't answered Mason properly, and he needed to nail the exactly right answer. That's what we have today: "I would say that President Zelensky, if it were me, I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens."

Snark aside, do tell us how it just so happens that Hunter Biden, a man of no known talents and accomplishments other than being the son of the then Vice President of the US happens to get the Chinese to give him one billion to manage and the Ukrainians to pay him fifty grand a month. If you can't, then at least have the decency to admit you don't care how corrupt Biden is (and by extension Obama whose blessing Biden would have needed) as long as it advances the Democrat Party. Funny how those who were screaming Trump is making money blah, blah, blah Emoluments Clause!! are now saying move along, nothing to see with Dirty Quid Pro Joe.

Yancey Ward said...

I wrote the other day that I wouldn't have taken any of this money were I in Hunter Biden's shoes if only because it would look like a bribe to anyone with a brain, and that my father might well be expected to pay off on it by my employers or pay off it off on his own initiative. And yet Hunter Biden took the money, and Biden is quite clearly lying about not knowing he took it. When you add in the fired prosecutor himself saying under oath that he fired for exactly this reason, then you have a cause for an investigation in both countries' cases.

Original Mike said...

Was Hunter not paid $50k/month by the Ukrainian gas company? Did he and his business associates not get $1.5 billion from the Chinese? Frankly, I'm not paying a lot of attention to this, so maybe the answers are 'No', but if they're 'Yes', how much more "real" dirt do you need?

The reported asked, "What did you want about Biden? What did you want him to look into on Biden?" Trump clearly lays out the problem -- Biden's son got a large amount of money for doing nothing and his father had to have known. Trump's quite right to blow the reported off for asking it again in an attempt to get a better sound byte.

Yancey Ward said...

Original Mike,

Hunter Biden did get this money- the Bidens have never denied this, so it is established fact. And it is all but certain that Joe Biden lied about not knowing any of this- he basically said that his son kept him in the dark, but even Hunter Biden contradicted this, it is just that Joe lied without knowing his son had already admitted it to a friendly journalist. Joe Biden is just reckless with the things he says publicly- I don't think he has the ability to keep the lies straight and consistent with public information- maybe he never had such an ability, but he definitely doesn't have it now.

One problem with the claim that Trump pressured Zelensky about the Bidens is that the Ukrainians say they did not know there had been a hold on their proposed weapons purchase until a month later.

Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason asked, "What do you or what did you want President Zelensky to do with regard to Joe and Hunter Biden?"

Yes, I think Trump muffed this one. The answer should have been fairly simple. After all, it's in the transcript:

"...There's a lot of talk about Biden's son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it... It sounds horrible to me...."

He wanted Zelensky to "look into it". Literally, that's all.

We can (and will) argue endlessly over whether this was appropriate. Whether "look into it" is code for "get me the dirt" is speculation. Here Trump's supporters take him literally, and his opponents take him seriously (malevolently).

Two questions:

1) Were Biden not a candidate for president, would anything Trump asked for be wrong?

2) Were Biden not a candidate for president, would Trump have brought Biden up at all?

The first question should have a reasonable answer. The answer to the second question can only be conjecture.

The thing about Hunter Biden's big China cash haul and Burisma post is that it's obviously corruption, but of a very common sort that's typically difficult to prove is part of a quid pro quo. It's just that Delaware Joe bragged on camera about strong-arming Poroshenko into firing the prosecutor. Even if not directly related to protecting his son's interests, it's rubbing our faces in the corruption--directly demonstrating the ways in which it's a good investment to pay a guy like Hunter Biden. So unbelievably stupid. One guy who comes out looking smart and, by comparison to Hunter Biden and Devon Archer, principled is John Kerry's stepson. He quit the private equity firm he and Hunter Biden started right around the time of the huge Chinese cash injection.

They will fight it. Is Harris just gonna meekly abide? Will Joe? Will Liz? I think not.

I don’t think that she thinks this way, but should. She set some sort of record in 2016 for te number of women bvious felonies that she had committed, and was never charged for. We are talking Espionage Act violations for misusing classified documents, Records Act violations for 60k emails that should, legally have been on a government server, but weren’t, and Obstruction of Justice for the 33k emails that were deleted while under subpoena. That likely puts her above 100k individual cries. Add on to of that multiple cases of bribery, extortion, and several other related crimes. All excused and ignored by Obama Lynch, and Comey. The statute of limitations has probably run, by now, for many of those crimes, but possibly not for deleting the 33k emails, and engineering the Trump/Russia Collusion hoax, as well as working with other countries to hurt Trump’s chances of being elected. I forgot - apparently her campaign also apparently repeatedly violated campaign finance laws when te DNC under their control (and thus an alter ego) took bundled contributions, sent them to 43 state Dem parties, accepted them back and forwarded them to her campaign. But if Trump is going to have the DoJ go after her for any of this, strategically he would do well to wait for a bit until she gets the nomination.

The reality is that she was a horrible candidate and probably will be worse this time. She surely hasn’t gotten any healthier. She appears to have either put on a lot of weight, or is wearing some sort of mechanical contraption that makes her look obese.

We can only hope that she gets her rematch.

The college kid wearing a pink pussy hat is oblivious, but the executive offices of the Deep State FBI, Intelligence Community, DOJ and the power structures within the House and Senate are not; they know. It is the way of the swamp.

Why would a senate candidate spend $10 million to win an election that pays $300k/year? How do politicians become multi-millionaires while in office?

Likely a great many more people are aware of the bigger issues than ever before. Perhaps this explains the dynamic of angst amid those same occupants.

Think about how much the DOJ and FBI did to protect and promote candidate Clinton.

Obviously, in their down-time discussions, they would have discussed and recognized some benefit would be forthcoming.

No entity would go so far out on an obvious limb of corruption if they did not perceive some personal benefit on the horizon.

Think about how much leverage James Comey would have held over the institution of the Office of the President if they had succeeded. If the sum total of dirt on Trump filled a bucket, by comparison Hillary Clinton owns a landfill.

The super mega hyper wealthy support the Democrats because they need politicians who are frankly for sale. They have money, they need power, they buy it. It’s very simple. The Republicans stopped being the party of the rich years ago. They need to remember this and stop kowtowing to people who would throw them off a building as soon as look at them.

Apparently, if you are involved in corruption all you have to do is run for pres and you are off limits...unless you win...and are republican.
