The Chicago Way via Lucianne:

"It is important for us to consider how our policies can help reduce hate and violence through any vehicle," Rep. Danny K. Davis insisted. "Any mechanism, any apparatus, any way that we possibly can." The mechanism and apparatus being considered was unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. The Oversight Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee was holding a hearing on How the Tax Code Subsidizes Hate. Its theme was removing tax-exempt status from groups it didn’t like. The Democrats running it didn’t issue a full list of allegedly discriminatory groups they wanted the government to discriminate against,

I usually get here too late to ask a question and hope for a response, but tonight may be the night.

Althouse posts at 9:06 (central/7:06 my time Pacific).

Meade posts at 9:36 (central). Does this mean that Meade posted at 9:36? Or, that Althouse "approved" the post at 9:36?

Inquiring minds would like to know/understand.

Thank you I advance Meadehouse.

Just a box of rain,
Wind and water,
Believe it if you need it,
If you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower,
Wind and rain,
In and out the window
Like a moth before a flame

And it's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
Or leave it if you dare
And it's just a box of rain
Or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there.

So long, Robert Hunter, fare thee well

There's at least one country song for any occasion. Here are two: "Good Morning Beautiful", and "Angel of the Morning".

I'm concerned about my husband's continued ability to earn a living (strategy consultant) in this current business and cultural environment. Everyone he encounters either has TDS and can't talk about anything else, in settings that were considered wildly inappropriate for political rants just a few years ago, or is silent on matters of politics and likely as afraid as he is. Remember not that long ago that people mostly believed in being civil about disagreements? Slowly and then suddenly it became 'if you won't join the mob you're one of them and you must be branded as an enemy.' One of my husband's longtime coworkers and friends posted a social media diatribe saying basically 'If you won't renounce Trump then unfriend me; I don't want to associate with you any longer.' It's gone from 'well my mom is a saint and she likes Trump so not everyone who likes Trump can be bad' to 'my mom may seem like a nice person on the outside but her liking of Trump proves that she's actually evil.' This is some real Stasi, denounce your neighbors shit. Overnight, it seems.

A normally peaceful parenting group I'm part of had a giant blowup over St. Greta the other day and even the people who said 'Hey look, let's all just calm down, good people can disagree' were getting shit on for being 'part of the problem by not acknowledging the climate emergency.' I don't understand how otherwise reasonable people could get here. Are they all just completely high on their own supply? Addicted to the smell of their own farts and the supreme masturbatory pleasure of self-righteousness?

How do we resolve this? How do we break the fever? I'm genuinely frightened about where we go from here. What do you guys think?

These are clearly parents you do not want to associate with. Slowly withdraw from said group by having conflicts with their meeting times, etc. If they are so effing clueless as to not see through St. Greta, stay away from them.

My guess is these parents drive the largest SUVs, have the largest homes, vacation in exotic places, you get the picture.

"When *I* retire, I will not be taking in any sunrises!”

You maybe will be surprised at what your body does when you age. Anyway. Retirement for me has been, so far, like a second boyhood. Though I did retire in my fifties. I am in my early sixties now, and I enjoy the sunrises. For some reason, once you finally disconnect from the stresses of your job, which took me almost two years to really detoxify, sleeping late loses it’s appeal, even if I could somehow manage it.

It’s disruption, Pants, as disturbing as it is. You say it’s some kind of parental support group. Are you getting support or abuse? What works for me is cut them out of your life- no association, no thinking about them. No sorrow for the loss. Nothing. Seek out alternatives. Those people need you for their rants. Don’t be there for them. That may seem more difficult when career is involved but it works there, too. It works for regular shitty people too, not just the Trump deranged...

Very interesting. I would attribute it to the same mob psychology the world saw during the French Revolution. People just get whipped into a frenzy and it snowballs.

I've been retired for 15 years, and here I am at 7:28 AM posting on Althouse. Already showered and shaved and walked the dogs. I decided that when I retired, I would pretty much structure my day the same way as when I worked. No reason to get lazy now.

Nice pics. For good sunrise/sunset pictures it's important to have just the right amount of cloud cover to reflect light off of. Particularly nice here is the reflections off both the clouds and the water. Nice.

Here in NC we get great, great sunrises and sunsets with deep hues of reddish color. Very dramatic cloud stacks and similarly dramatic reflections off them.

When I worked by time was dictated by those signing my paycheck. When off the clock? That's my time. I use my time doing and experiencing things I like.

Not spending paid vacation time in bed. Vacation time is my time. 24/7 my time. I choose not to spend much of "my time" sleeping.

Retirement has me getting up at the same time as always between 5-6am. What I do in those hours is as I see fit. I also understand the world is made up of persons that either work the early day, or the late day. Neither has the moral high ground.

The Pelosi/Trump dance is interesting. I view the Democratics as the defense in a football game. They have decided to blitz the QB. Trump knows his offensive line is filled with eGOP like Romney. He knows they won't block for him.

So what to do?

He barks at the defense. He gets them fired up. He gets them to commit to the pass rush. Pelosi, the Democratics' veteran middle linebacker finally calls the defense to an all-out blitz.

But Trump has the ball (information). He holds the information (ball) that can make the blitz look silly. He can release that information (ball) at his whim. But in order to maximize the play's potential he has to wait to throw the ball until the very last minute.

Today Trump is going to throw a screen pass and the jailbreak pass rush of the Democratics will mean all of their defenders are out of position.

Thoughts?

You said it, brother.

rehajm said...

How do we break the fever?

It runs its course. Some people will be consumed and some...many...will grow weary and begin to recognize how unproductive (or unprofitable) it is to alienate everyone they disagree with. It will die down...eventually.

Birkel said...

In warfare, you break the fever by killing 20% of their fighting age men.

Nowadays you have to kill 20% of their men whether or not those men are women.
