“An escaped prisoner who had been on the run from police in China for 17 years was finally tracked down by authorities....”

“A police drone spotted a blue piece of steel among the trees in the forest — and came in for a closer look to find garbage and debris around the entrance of a small cave.... Yongshan police officers made the climb to the site and found Jiang — disheveled and struggling to communicate after years of isolation — living in a cave of just over 2 square yards. Jiang later told police he survived by collecting water from a nearby stream and cooking food over small fires....”

The New York Post reports.

Usually, when a person is thrown in jail, their standard of living goes down. Behold Mr. Jiang, the exception that proves that particular rule.

"...cave of 2 square yards..." Wow, 1.4+ yards by 1.4+ yards or some similar size. One yard by two yards works as well. Or did they mean 2 yards square? Can I assume that is the size of the opening? After all a cave has three (count 'em) dimensions? Or is that the floor size like,"Come see my new 18 square foot home. Mind the stalactites".

If it's a 6 foot by three foot opening (2 square yards) is it a mile long?
And a furlong end to end?
Opening into a cathedral like dome?

Fookin' no math reporters.

except that soldier thought he was eluding enemies of his country, NOT the police.

Care to chew on that tiny difference?

Have seen a spate of prison/jail escapees being apprehended headlines the last couple of days. Seems like it's become practically impossible in the modern technological world to evade capture indefinitely. The days of being able to move to the other coast and establish a new identity are long gone. Cameras and listening devices are omnipresent. In relatively short time, thinks to Americans submitting to commercial ancestry websites, any DNA left anywhere will be able to be identified, even if the suspect has never submitted his or her own DNA.

p.s. Hey Ann, I know you don't like off-topic comments as the first comment. Apologies. But then again, I had no way of knowing how many other comments were in queue ahead of me ;)

It is amazing watching the complete corruption of the field of journalism in trying to defend the form change for the whistleblower complaint. The ICIG in the whistleblower changed the complaint form not so that the whistleblower could file a form with the ICIG, he changed the form so that he, the ICIG could process the form and send it to the DoJ.

These things are really, really simple to understand- the whistleblower law requires credibility in the complaint- to judge credibility requires first hand knowledge from the complaintant. You might ask why this is- well, just read the fucking complaint that was filed in this case- there is literally nothing in it that the ICIG can use to judge the credibility. For example, the whistleblower claimed to have heard people discussing the phone call, but he names none of these people.

The ICIG put out a statement today that claimed the form was changed because the requirement for first hand information might be misread in discouraging whistleblowers to come forward and file complaint with less than first hand knowledge, but that is at, best, a mistake- a whistleblower can file the form any time he wants- nothing prevents this- but on the old forms, he couldn't attest that the knowledge was first hand. The regulations absolutely did bar the ICIG from moving the complaint forward. An honest ICIG would have ended it there, but Atkinson seems to have come up with a form that no longer barred him from moving the complaint forward.

The media all day have been deliberately misreporting the what and why of the form change. In addition, the ICIG seems to have outed himself by mistake- he claimed the change was initiated due to press inquiries, but here is the thing- the new form would have been dated in September if that were true, and if it is true, then someone backdated the form to August to make it look like it had been done prior to the whistleblower complaint. However, it now appears that the whistleblower filed the complaint originally on the old form on August 12th and that this has been withheld from Congress, thus suggesting the ICIG is lying.

Why bother if he's going to stay there, and hide? He provided himself with his own prison.

Once upon a time, an escapee could take on a new identity and live a normal life (if they could resist committing new crimes). In today’s world, the life of an escapee is worse than prison.

17 years of self imposed solitary confinement sleeping in a small cave.
But each night, when the fear was under control, he had that tremendous feeling of freedom that maybe tomorrow, he will walk towards the left in the forest. The day after, to the right.

In between the thinking of how to survive, thinking how not to get caught, maybe a few fond memories of early life, I wonder if in the cave he thought over the crimes that brought him there.

Well the comments petered out rather quickly on this thread, did they not.

Admittedly, the subject matter is rather depressing, since it is hard to imagine how that will not happen here, by and by. Hey, we're all just entertaining ourselves on this blog, and no one wants to end up feeling bad, right?

This is usually where I try to come up with a sardonic punch line, but nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Take heart Phidippus, sometimes the comment section illuminates, and sometimes the post stands on its own, in this case, for pondering a little longer on the essence of a 17 year long solitary existence. Now THATs a long time to go between commenting on blog posts.

And you likely already know you can always end on any quip that unnecessarily brings American politics back into it:

"As he was led into custody, the man agreed that the impeachment proceedings should proceed"
"The man later confessed to holding a small intimate party sometime in the 1980s with Kavanaugh in attendance"
"The man was relieved at his capture, and admonished the world for not doing more about climate change in the last two decades. "The science is settled!" He exclaimed, "That damn cave is getting too stinking hot!!"
