"What was the embittered left — Democratic presidential candidates and their media allies — supposed to do when their hopes of Russia-Trump collusion crashed on the boulevard of broken dreams?"

"Pivot. They had invested so much in their fantasy that President Donald Trump was a treasonous agent of Russian boss Vladimir Putin. But when special counsel Robert Mueller’s report came out, and there was no collusion, no crime charged, their fantasy collapsed. And so, after a brief spasm of despair, the left pivoted to their default position: race. Race. Race. Race. Race. Race.... In the short term, Democrats and their media allies are using race and charges of 'white supremacy' to herd those 60 million or so Trump voters back into Hillary Clinton’s basket of deplorables. But once you brand 60 million people as 'white supremacists,' and 'Nazis,' what can you do with them?"

Writes John Kass in The Chicago Tribune.

They don't care about that 60 million. They're well aware that they could never persuade them to vote (D) anyway. They're attempting to appeal to swing voters by making the argument something like "You don't want to be associated with racists, do you?" The goal is to fully demonize Trump's base, turn them into monsters and B movie villains of the sort that any self respecting person wouldn't want anything to do with.

I have no idea how successful they can be with this, but it seems like a difficult task.

Yep. That's exactly what this "racist" crap is all about. It actually doesn't have anything to do with Trump. They've been doing it since before Trump even showed up. It's a cynical, disgusting tactic. And then, to top it off, we're the ones who are labeled "divisive. Fuck 'em.

Ironically, the Democrats' front-runner, Joe Biden, is a racist.

Also, Biden supported the US Senate's worst racists, even though such support would turn out to be hurtful to Cory Baker several decades later.

Most of us have gained an immunity to the charge of racism. It's such a lame charge anymore that it's easy to shrug off.

The real damage the Democrats will do to Trump's campaign is thru the economy.

They're now promoting a "possible" coming recession.

This is like worrying about being sick. If you worry enough you'll make yourself sick

Convincing enough people a recession is coming will cause a recession. People will start to behave in a way that will bring about the recession you worried about. They'll wait to buy that new house. They'll wait to open up that new business. They'll put off expanding their currently successful business. They'll make all kinds of decisions that will lead our economy into a recession.

Which is what the Democrats want

Which is why they've waited until now to start talking about it. So it'll hit just in time for the next election.

You have the bulk of the MSM constantly blaring out the #Orangemanbad and anyone who supports him is also bad messages. You also have Google supressing stories in their index that are bad for team (D) and up-indexing stories that are bad for Trump. Doubtless Facebook will be attempting similar manipulations in terms of their news feeds. Not to mention Twitter surreptitiously suppressing, blocking, banning, and shadow banning conservatives under the aegis of preventing "hate speech".

Unfortunately for them, it's impossible to completely kill all counter messaging. There's just too much to control. The internet is a vast and wild beast with too many moving parts.

That is why 1920s-60s Soviet propaganda systems messaging persisted thirty years beyond the death of the polity they were created to serve. Messaging of this kind is like letting loose autonomous, immortal war-machines. They may persist for centuries.

Too bad there were no comments on that article. Would've been fun.

My impression is that the usual suspects are starting to beat the drums for "recession" now, as a back-up for the blaring trumpets of "race! race! race!".

Not necessarily a bad idea - freaking people out about their financial security often works, and the economy always crashes and burns sooner or later. And, as a tactic, a lot less risky than going balls-to-the-wall on "race! race! race!". Strong backlash to that is inevitable, and the odds of completely losing control of the demons you've so foolishly summoned way too high.

All national elections are about changes on the margins. Trump beat Hillary because he got marginally more of the White Democrat working class vote. He did not do all that bad among Black and Hispanic voters, for a Republican.

The fear among Democrats is that Trump will make marginal gains among Blacks and Hispanics and that they are not sufficiently motivated to turn out for the Dem nominee in large numbers. Hence, the shrill racism charge.

My wife (a traditionally liberal Democrat like AA) worked with Trump in NYC in the late 80's. She doesn't like him and thinks he is an egotistical sexist. She also believes that he is well intentioned, very generous and definitely NOT a racist.

She will not vote for Trump, but none of the Dems (one of whom she will vote for) excite her. The Media will really have to pump up the Dam Nominee to excite the traditional base.

But, remember, power in America is diffuse. Most folks don't live in SF. Most folks don't read the NYT. They are spread throughout this vast country, away from the ugliness of the big cities. Some folks call it "flyover" country. Don't fret, there's a lotta power there.

When they call Trump a racist, a homophobe, or a xenophobe, they are simply lumping him in with the rest of us "deplorables". And of course that tends to increase the probability that we deplorables will be "With Him" in the 2020 election to coin a phrase.

Now White Supremacist is a bit of a different kettle of fish as an epithet. It's got a bit more sting than a simple minded charge of racism. Most of us deplorables are fairly proud--we won't concede that we are "inferior" to any other human being; most, but not every last one of us, will say that all others are our equals. We accord the respect to others that we believe should be given to ourselves.

Now if you are a coastal progressive "elite" you don't believe much of that. You know that you are better then those deplorables; you know, if you are white, that all other whites are guilty of enjoying "white privilege" and you know that that is a bad thing in the abstract. OTOH you gobble up all the goodies that attend to "white privilege" and feel not a qualm of shame about that. So sod off you useless twits!

Anyways, Google and Facebook are trying to crank electoral manipulation to 11, and under the average Republican President that would be enough to doom their re-election chances.

Trump isn't average, whatever else he is. I am personally pushing for him to seize a television station at minimum, maybe one of the Big Tech companies. I'd prefer Google, but meh. He absolutely has the temperament to use the DOJ for declaring the death sentence of a major American corporation, revoking their corporate charters entirely, and I believe we will see that happen.

The sea change is that Trump is getting improved polling numbers with Black and Hispanic voters. I'm not so sure this "Racism" campaign is working.

Even "The Week" is seeing the bullshit.

There's no denying that the much-lauded "1619 Project" at The New York Times is a remarkable achievement. Whether it's an achievement that the paper and its staff should be proud of is another matter.

For those who haven't been following along, this past weekend the paper devoted the entirety (just under 100 pages) of The New York Times Magazine, along with a separate stand-alone section of the Sunday paper, to a breathtakingly ambitious and ideologically radical undertaking — nothing less than the telling of the story of American history, perhaps for the very first time, "truthfully."

Inside, a note from NYTM editor Jake Silverstein informs his readers that it is wrong to trace the true origin of the United States to the founding of the English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, or to the landing of the Puritans at Plymouth Rock in 1620, or to the publication of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Instead, the Times proposes to overturn such mythmaking in favor of an effort to "reframe American history," treating 1619 as "our nation's birth year."

This is early but I think it is too far fetched.

I have spent many years attempting translations of fairly straightforward texts, military histories and administrative papers.

The concepts are clear - an event, say - in some morning 150 years ago two companies of infantry land on a South-East Asian beach. But the original words add, maybe, additional implications about the difficulty of the landing, the time it took, the attitudes of the leadership, the state of the troops, and where or if this fits in the overall plan, such as it is. All of that is veiled in words in one language, and you have to convey such nuances, to the degree you can tease them out, in another.

Translation is a frustrating hobby, and it makes you contemptuous of language.

There's a certain type of leftie who works in software. They can often be thoughtful and some of these people aren't entirely unreachable or unpersuadable. But it's a challenge because they tend to take any story that appears on NPR, NYT, or Huffpost as absolute unquestionable gospel and will generally dismiss anything that contradicts it as lies out of hand, especially if it appears on Fox News. For the sake of a stable work environment it's often easier to simply let them believe what they're reading is true. Conservatives, by our very nature, don't like to rock the boat. Being disruptive generally goes against our basic nature.

Since most of what PDJT has done in the past couple years seems to be in line with the things she would like a president to do, this may be the primary reason for her not supporting PDJT.

At least my impression of what she would like a president to do based on her posts and comments here. It's all I have to go on.

Blacks are disproportionately represented in low-skilled jobs and are thus most exposed to the wage compressions caused by a massive influx of low-skilled workers from Latin America. The construction and restaurant industries are two prime examples.

Jersey Fled said...

Every day I run into black people working in places I didn't expect to see them. These are people who I suspect were not working during the Obama years. This morning it was the masonry crew who showed up to install a new fireplace at my neighbors house. Four black men, including the owner of the company. Last week it was the crew who came to trim my oak tree. Before that, it was the teenage boy at Arby's who was a little short on experience but long on effort.

Black people are not stupid. Black unemployment is at an all time low. If they want a job, they can get a job. Couple that with the growing awareness that the Democrats have been blowing smoke up their butt for years as thing went from bad to worse. Obama bragged about how many people he added to food stamps. Trump can be proud of how many people found jobs - 1.7 new jobs in manufacturing, construction and the building trades since Trump took office.

Trump doesn't have to get a majority of the black vote. He just has to just cut into the margin. An increase from 8% to even 15% would tip more that a few electors and congressional seats in the Republicans direction.

We are all, in the long run, doomed. The notion that Trump is ephemeral is true, but among his durable accomplishments is the destruction of the GOP which is rebuilding itself, in which process some of the old guard have been thoroughly disintermediated. This group includes elected officials, policy wonks/academics, journalists, etc. Something similar appears to be occurring within the Dem Party, where we can also expect durable and meaningful changes up to and past the next national election. While Trump will not be successful even in two terms at reversing national decline or uprooting the most regressive forces in our society, he's shown who the enemy is domestically, and how to fight them: at the ballot box, but more importantly in the culture and rhetorical battleground. We are eventually doomed, but there's reason for hope if for no other reason than that our elite consensus on our era being one of managing our decline (to their own benefit) has been shattered.

I am not anti-Trump, and I am not pro-Trump. I don't find that kind of framing very useful. When Trump does things I agree with and support, I'll support them. When he does things I don't agree with and don't support, I won't. It really isn't more complicated than that. Unlike the Never Trumpers and the Ever Trumpers, my criteria for judgment isn't "Trump did it." In fact, if you replaced Trump with someone else who did the exact same things as Trump, I'd have the exact same opinion. My opinion is based on the decisions and the policies, not the person making the decisions and the policies.

Completely disagree. Take the areas of foreign policy that have most consumed Trump's presidency: North Korea, Iran, and Venezuela. So far the administration has not achieved any of its stated goals on these three fronts. North Korea continues to possess nuclear weapons and test missiles, the Iranians have evinced no willingness to come to the table to negotiate a "better deal," and Maduro remains in power as Bolton's fantasy of a quick ouster fade.

One thing that Trump has shown the world. North Korea is an instrument of Chinese foreign policy. China has decided that they need to keep Trump from being re-elected so they set their little dog to barking.

Not sure this is true. Kim said that if the US did not hold joint exercises with S Korea, he would not shoot any missiles or do any nuclear tests.

PDJT postponed the exercises and Kim kept his word. Then the exercises were held and Kim started shooting "projectiles". And he says he will stop once the exercises finish.

I wish he wouldn't do this but it is hard to fault him. He views the exercises as threatening to NK and he is threatening back. Sort of threatening back. Seems reasonable to me.

Did anyone else notice that in many of the news stories of the past weeks Kim is shooting "projectiles". I found that name very strange. A projectile, to me, is something that is projected, thrown, shot. I suppose a missile, that goes under its own power, is a projectile but I don't recall having seen this usage before.

Some stories said they were "missiles" and I assume they were the same as the projectiles. I could not find anything about the usage, though.

Someone else said that PDJT has not come through on NK. I would add "yet". He has made more progress in 2 years than everyone else combined has made in 70. It would be a nice surprise if it went faster and more smoothly. It would still be a surprise.

I feel reasonably satisfied with what has been done there.

Darkisland, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles are two different things.

Cruise missiles are powered and controlled all the way to the target, so it would be inaccurate to refer to them as "projectiles".

Ballistic missiles, on the other hand, are thrown (hence the word "ballistic"). Since the engines are internal, they essentially throw themselves, but they're still thrown. "Projectiles" is a correct term in this case.

They had invested so much in their fantasy that President Donald Trump was a treasonous agent of Russian boss Vladimir Putin. But when special counsel Robert Mueller’s report came out, and there was no collusion, no crime charged, their fantasy collapsed.

Conservative George Conway III tells it like it really is:

In ... essence ... in 2016, the United States was attacked, ... by a hostile foreign government, through the use of technology, lies, and deception. In “sweeping and systematic fashion,” the report tells us, the Russian government interfered in an American presidential election, seeking to affect its result, and to undermine public confidence in our politics ... All patriotic Americans ought to agree: We must do everything we can to see that it never happens again.

That was ... the job that former FBI Director Robert Mueller was assigned—to conduct a counterintelligence investigation ... and included a prosecutorial focus: If he uncovered crimes, he could charge them ... in particular, given some unusual links between some in the Trump Campaign and agents of Russia—including a campaign manager with financial ties to a Russian oligarch and Russian-backed Ukrainians, and a foreign policy advisor whom a court found to be an “agent of a foreign power,” namely Russia—Special Counsel Mueller’s job was also to find out the extent of those links. (The report ... [did] not address ... the nonlegal concept of “collusion,” [but] in the end found many more such links.)

Trump fired an FBI director because the FBI director wouldn’t make a public statement Trump wanted about his status in the investigation—and then bragged about the firing to, of all people, the foreign minister of the Russian Federation and its ambassador to the United States.

The President relentlessly attacked the investigation over the course of two years. And he tried to sharply curtail it, and even kill it altogether. Repeatedly. The President ... hated that it made it seem he hadn’t actually won the great election victory of which he liked to boast.

The President tried to fire the special counsel. He directed his White House counsel to tell the acting attorney general that the special counsel could not serve because of a contrived, nonexistent conflict of interest, and thus had to go. The White House counsel, putting the law and the nation’s interests above the President’s personal interests, refused . . .

If the Mueller report demonstrates one thing, it is that President Trump utterly failed to carry out his duties under the Constitution—that indeed, he shamelessly abjured them. It is time for members of Congress to do their duties and to hold the President to account.

I'll go ahead and say what I think really happened, and we'll soon see if Horowitz agrees with your characterization or mine: the FISC authorized a warrant to spy on Carter Page, and the DOJ lied when they made their application to the court. Hey BAG, how do I find the poop apps? I am going to SFO to the American College of Surgeons in October. It'll be my first time there in ten years. Maybe buwaya knows.

The ACS cancelled three years ago. Is it any better ? I notice that they have a course on LGBTQ surgery this year.

Some of us have the luxury of pessimism; others of us find it irrelevant nuisance – the choice is optimism or extinction, or maybe both; but never pessimism.

Remembe Bill Ayres and Bernadine Dohrn and their merry little band of terrorists? That is exactly what their long-term plan was. For 25 million people they believed needed to be removed in order to achieve their utopia.

To jumpstart the Revolution, children needed to kill their parents.

I was in grade school. I remember thinking, why would I want to do that?

Doc K,

Heh! -- you don't need the poop app for SF. You just need to pinpoint where City Hall is, and the Bart station that services it: >Civic Center/UN Nation plaza

Then, once pinpointed, make sure you stay at least 1 to 2 miles from that area!

Hopefully, your conference is on Nob Hill, at the Fairmount Hotel -- not a lotta poop up there.

Of course you have obligations. The fact that you deny this demonstrates that you and people like you are part of the problem. As I said: faithless, accursed.

Thanks to those who expressed agreement with my view.

He ran a regulated monopoly - a government Deep State scam.

For those who keep asking what "white supremacy" is, a place to start is the Wikipedia article on "Madison Grant" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madison_Grant at the point where the article begins to talk about "Nordic Theory." I have read the article carefully and it is an accurate and up-to-date account. Madison Grant was the most influential advocate of white supremacy in the US from 1900 to the late Thirties. Hitler called Madison Grant's book "my bible."

Leaving Wikipedia, I say that:
The article "Madison Grant" mentions Lothrop Stoddard's book, The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy. Stoddard helped found the American Birth Control League with Margaret Sanger. For him, birth control was to be a weapon to maintain white supremacy. He was a member of the KKK and was popular among the Nazi theorists. The American Birth Control League evolved in to Planned Parenthood and as such it continues to contracept and abort disproportionate numbers of the babies of people of color. Some sweet souls think this is just an accident. Sanger, Stoddard and Madison Grant were all members of the American Eugenics Society.

So white supremacy also means supporting Federal or state payments for abortion and birth control in minority communities.

However this attempt at black genocide by using birth control and abortion is not what a Democrat or the NYT would mean by white supremacy. "White supremacy 2019" means that slavery existed and all white people, because of their base, evil natures, want it back or as an close approximation to it as they can get. But the Americans and of the Americans, the Deplorables (a term now expanded to mean all Trump supporters) are the nastiest and most white supremiest of them all. Why is this going on considering that Americans fought a war the free the slaves and elected Barack Obama twice? It's scapegoating. In 2019 in the large Democrat-run cities and other areas in the US which have adopted socialist policies, the blacks are doing poorly in terms of school graduation rates, in terms of jobs, and in terms of committing and suffering from crime or in terms of any other measure you care to adopt. "White supremacy 2019" means that these Democrat-controlled cities and counties are to be thought of as controlled by Republican Deplorables (how?) and the Deplorables are to be the scapegoats for the Democrats' failures. So the Dems can win in 2020.

The Deplorables will not be fooled. And it's my opinion that blacks will not be fooled either though how they express their contempt will depend on various internal conditions.

I believe we are at the beginning of a spiritual revival. Every 4th generation since the founding of our country has seen a revival. The last was in the 1920's and here we are. Trump is the chemo and is wiping out the cancer of the "elites". How could any person of even moderate intelligence think the government should have any substantial control of our lives anymore? The Left has to argue that our government is controlled by Hitler, and at the same time, Hitler should control every thing in our lives. The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming!

Since 2013, non-white births represented more than half the births in the country, and within a couple of decades, whites will be less than half the country. Even assuming that your "every 4th generation" claim were true, the US is heading for unprecedented demographic change.

That's laying it on a bit thick. I think Buwaya's outsider's insights are quite valuable; calling him "part of the problem" would be like a Trojan citizen calling Cassandra "part of the problem". I mean, step up and prove him wrong.

To quote my favorite British curmudgeon Peter Hitchens: "Pessimism is the key to happiness. I don't know how anyone manages without it."

To me, optimistic conservative is practically an oxymoron.

They keep telling me that Trump is an authoritarian and a nascent, if not a full blown, Hitler. Now, I am not a fan of Trump. Never have been. Didn't vote for him. Don't like him and don't like a fair amount of his policies. But the more I hear this canard that Trump is leading us to Triumph of the Will circa 1935, the more convinced I am that I will vote for him in 2020. Because Trump = Hitler, or Trump = Racist, is just a lie. A fucking lie. Trump is not Hitler. He is just gross and uncouth compared to our expectations of modern presidents, although really is he grosser than JFK? Is he more racist than LBJ? You only use this kind of rhetoric because you either have no argument against him or you are completely blinded by irrational disgust. t:
