How much more would you have to pay to hire a carpenter to fix those dreadful cobbled-up stairs she’s sitting on?

And here I thought the Democratic Socialists were going to seize all private property in San Francisco and redistribute it to the Workers. This looks like good old fashioned cut throat free market capitalism at work.

They still wear Che t-shirts.

You do not understand people. Most people in the US do not really understand just how miserable and terrible many people are. Everywhere there are people who are driven by hate and a will to power. You do not understand them because you have never had to deal with them being in control of your life.

You have never been out and met them. See what they do.

The taliban. Al queada. Drug cartels. Modern leftists.

They don't mind living in tents and being poor and having a lower standard of living...

as long as they can force you to do the same.

I understand perfectly. I lived and worked in the old east Germany, Ukraine and east Ukraine. This little charlatan is a dime a dozen over there. Give me money and I'll give you freedom from choice and risk. Also look at the Albanian Ponzi scheme disaster.

People have to learn this lesson the hard way. But they do learn. Eventually.

There are similar "share houses" in Tokyo, though I believe rents there are lower than the one in the article in San Francisco.

Portland is another progressive utopia with a city government intent on earning Woke Points (tm) above all else. So, of course, they're doing their damnedest to cram as many people as possible into the city with "infill" development...while at the same time doing their damnedest to make driving as unpleasant and difficult as possible. Rents here are ridiculous, though not all of it is due to the city government's policies--people fleeing California sell their insanely expensive homes there and come here to buy up houses and upscale apartments, bidding up real estate prices in the process.

I make pretty good money, but nearly half my take-home income goes to rent. I could pay less, if I wanted to live in squalor or move much farther out and lengthen my commute. So I suck it up. On the other hand, I have a two-bedroom apartment to myself because once you get over the hump of renting an apartment in the city at all, the difference in price between a 1 and 2-bedroom apartment was small enough that I figured, "What the hell? Why not?"

I have space AND privacy. And for a bonus, I'm not stuck in San Francisco.

LOL, I'm not paying a ton more than that to rent a 1 BR Condo in Coconut Grove that overlooks the water, has a pool, bar & restaurant, and a gym with nice equipment. And I've never stepped in a turd, human or canine, walking around the town.

Humans need a curtilage around their private yard and nice home that forms their safe space excluding others.

I tried living in an exclusive luxury Condominium on the 7th floor in the best area of town ( The Borghese on Northside Drive),but after 5 years it was a pleasure to leave it behind. Because the traffic of people in and out made you feel like you were living in a Hotel. No amount of landscaping and walks helped. The privacy boundary of a home was missing.

They're all young and probably it's somehow fun. It's extended college, maybe. The amazing part is how much they are spending on nothing, $2000, and yet still they are saving money.

Communal living sucks. So primitive, like something out of our hunter gatherer past. Don't these people draw distinctions between family and friends? Don't they want to own homes? Sad! No way Trump would live like that.

Howard has great faith in "the Market" while holding the coats for the Socialist candidates.

The market is resulting in the replacement of the population of California, the middle class is leaving and being replaced by illiterate peasants who don't speak English.

I doubt you have ever heard Hemingway's description of how you go bankrupt. "Gradually, then suddenly."

Just a few days ago, Joaquin Castro was tweeting out photos of the spartan accommodations given to refugees. We were supposed to be shocked at the smallness of the bathroom, although I had a smaller bathroom in my first apartment. It sure didn't look like Dachau to me.

The digs Castro characterized as reprehensible were nicer than this dump.

Leora said...

I find it hard to believe this arrangement meets the building, fire and health codes of a modern American city not to mention zoning regulations. It's reminiscent of the immigrant housing they are always busting in Chinatown or Queens in New York City and of the illegal communes of Ithaca in the 60's. The communes were a lot dirtier, but give it time.

n.n said...

And both are by choice. The former by virtue of Democrat encouragement then heavy-handedness. The latter by virtue of Democrat glamorization and heavy-handedness... They'll always have PP.

pacwest said...

Just a thought. If you live in these kind of conditions you probably need to conform to a lot of communal behaviors to get along. If you don't or can't you will find your ass out on the street in pretty quick order. Compare it with the hive mind currently dominating the far left. Stretch it to include the cultures of workplaces of FB and twitter.

The market has sorted it out, and this is the result. Don't like it? Move.

Isn't this what AOC and the rest of the left promise to do to all of us in the "Green New Deal?" They want to tear down all housing and replace it with "adequate" housing for all of us. I.E. this. While they live in mansions, of course.

Not only Portland, but across the country. Greedy locals jacking up the selling price to take advantage of California retirees.
Oh, and the dorms look about two notches up from county jail, with less diversity.

Jeff said...

It would be nice to be able to blame expensive housing on the Democrats, but both parties are at fault. You get high housing prices when an area is in demand but the supply of new housing is restricted by zoning. I was in San Diego from 1984 to 1988 when the slow-growth movement was really taking hold there. The county supervisors and the Mayor were all Republicans. In San Francisco, they're Democrats. Doesn't matter, they all support restrictive zoning.

Why does each bed need a TV? Don't people have their tablet/phone to watch video on? The big screen seems absurdly out of place in that setting. You can't be playing it out loud. I assume everyone takes a vow of silence. And chastity.

No. They do not learn. They don't want to learn. They do not mean well for you. They hate you.

They know exactly where their road leads. They want to go there.

They will be poor as long as they can make you starve.

The regime in Venezuela still has support there and here. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez got elected. She is not stupid. She is evil and she hates you and she wants to replace you with peasants from Central America.

Actually, I wonder if this little Leftist entrepreneur is going to have to learn a lesson the hard way about tenants’ and squatters’ rights in San Francisco. Someone else asked about pets. Well, I’m sure they must make some sort of accommodation for those with totally legit, totally real doctor’s notes saying they need emotional support pets.

Did I hear correctly or did she actually say she’s trying to emulate the communist government from her motherland since it provided everyone with their needs?

Eh when I went to Berkeley during the dotcom bubble, we grad students were paying $700/month for a room. Adjust for inflation over 20+ years now it’s reasonable in another equity led bubble context. The equity bubble will break the next recession and rents will drop about 10%like last time with greater availability. Advice: buy everything you can then. My only regret is not completely emptying the bank account and leveraging up to buy more in 2010.

I'd rather live in my 200 sq ft camping trailer. At least I would have privacy. Plus a full kitchen. Shower. Bathroom. Queen sized bed. Dinette (which can make into a bed) Lots of storage. AC/Heat Flat screen with dvd player. All I am missing is internet access. Which can be fixed.

PLUS...if we don't like the neighborhood or scenery we can change that :-D

AND we own the accommodations.

I bet Mockturtle agrees.

Rob, they also have saner building codes in Tokyo that allows rents to be stabilized. Sure, they're small apartments compared to what we're used to, but they are real apartments, not bunk beds in garages.
