"If you think about why Kentuckians voted for Trump, they wanted to drain the swamp, and Trump said that he was going to do that... Who stops them along the way? Who stops the president from doing these things? Mitch McConnell."

"And I think that that’s very important, and that’s going to be my message—the things that Kentuckians voted for Trump for are not being done," said Amy McGrath, quoted in "Could a Democrat Really Unseat Mitch McConnell?/Amy McGrath will try to do what Beto O’Rourke couldn’t: Remove a high-profile Republican from a deep-red state" (The Atlantic).

That is, the Democrats, who are struggling to control and use their charismatic left-wing upstarts, now have action on their right. Amy McGrath is the pro-Trump Democrat!

Is she just conning Kentuckians? The Atlantic makes it seem that way:
Most important, though, she’ll have to persuade a sizable number of Trump voters in Kentucky’s redder regions to fill in the bubble beside her name next November. And parroting Trump’s catchphrases while avoiding endorsing his policies puts the Democrat in a slippery situation. “She has to be very careful in playing that angle,” [said Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth]. “She cannot give the impression that she’s supporting the Trump agenda.”
Well, she already gave that impression! She said she'll help Trump more than McConnell does.
[Scott Jennings, a GOP strategist who has worked on McConnell’s previous reelection campaigns] cited a Wednesday interview where McGrath [said] she “probably” would have voted to confirm Trump’s second’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, last fall. “There was nothing in his record that I think would disqualify him in any way,” she said. But later that night, McGrath changed her mind, tweeting: “I was asked earlier today about Judge Brett Kavanaugh, and I answered based upon his qualifications to be on the Supreme Court,” she wrote. “But upon further reflection and further understanding of his record, I would have voted no.”
What was that further "reflection"? Consultation with Democrats? She gazed into the swamp and a swamp isn't the best place to look for reflection. McGrath seems to have sought to build confidence in her independence and courage, but then she went soft under pressure. The swamp sucks you in.

AND: The swamp in action:

She's like Beto O'Fake, using the MSM as a weather gauge, and adjusting her stance accordingly.

She has no core principles.

Trump and McConnell are making history with the number of judges being confirmed. By the time these 2 are done in 5 years, the judiciary will be a remade branch.

I think they'll have at least 2 more SC Justices to appoint and confirm.

It's always a con. It won't be two minutes before she falls into line with the lunatics now in charge of the Democratic Party. The MSM will coo about how her views have "evolved", "matured" and become "more nuanced".

Yup. To get along you have to go along. It applies to both parties (that’s the whole point of parties), but it’s worse among the Democrats because it’s not enough to vote the party line, but you have to think the right way. Creates problems for the Blue Dog Democrats.

She's trying to con Kentuckians but she's the one getting conned, she's getting conned by the Washington Democrats, and herself. The end is nigh for her fifteen minutes of fame.

A con?
In order to have a con there has to be a mark.
The marks, in this case, are Democratics who donate.

Cocaine Mitch wins going away.

Not sure that's best for conservatives but there it is.

So he was qualified to be confirmed, and that, on second thought, is disqualifying. Lulz.... another silver-tongued Democrat party member. I was for it before I was against it! If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor! Wiped it, like, with a cloth? It never was about climate change- it's always been about changing the economy.

Is there even one single honest Democrat party member in the entire nation? What a despicable lot of worms these people are.

Most politicians are despicable worms.
They do vary in worminess though.

This one was not particularly wormy. The basic approach was similar to the SOP of Democrats running in conservative areas. They recruit plausible-sounding "conservative" candidates, that are nevertheless under complete funder control. The phenomenon was general by 2006, many house seats being taken by "conservative" Democrats who all voted in lock step anyway.

In this case the conservative pretense went too far it seems. Not suited to the more general messaging strategy.

Let her name specifics, instead of talk about the "swamp". What will she cut out in the Federal Government? Whatever that is, will she demand that Congress do it right now, even before she's elected?

Agree with Michael K, she is toast due to her flip flopping on Kavanaugh.

For the religious, Kavanaugh support is a litmus year, about 50% of Kentucky. My gut feeling for a lot of Catholics also, Who are just under 10% of Kentucky.

Thanks, and I won't say that I wasn't thinking of the old aphorism ("Whoever fights with monsters should see to it that he does not become a monster in the process. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.") But I don't really think McGrath was staring into the swamp and got consume by it. That's why the "Psycho" swamp sequence came to mind. She's getting rolled in.

I guess; if i hold my head right and squint, that i could possibly imagine how a person could think that they're a Republican, and still vote for a democrat (because of their personal hatred of Trump)

But, HOW IN THE HECK, could Anyone, EVER think that they could/should vote for a democrat BECAUSE of their personal liking of Trump?

Rick said...

Is she just conning Kentuckians?

Of course. We all know it just as we knew Obama was lying about his opposition to redefining marriage through the courts.

But I don't think these deceptions by politicians are very interesting. All politicians deceive. The revealing fact is how the deceptions are portrayed by the media. Obama's deceptions were defended with the media essentially saying to critics 'you can't prove he's lying and therefore such assertions are false'. Here the media acts as if McGrath's deception is normal and appropriate. But when a non-leftists deceives they treat him as the enemy and their job as challenging the deception.

The non-Fox media are campaign allies for the Democrats and it's completely obvious to everyone. See today's WAPO for a glowing profile of AOC's Chief of Staff even as he admits AOC's global warming campaign is a cover for boilerplate far left economic control. They don't even criticize what should be a bombshell admission because that have always understood that was reality. They just forgot they weren't supposed to admit it in public.

So a Democrat is going to unseat the Republican Senate Majority Leader, by signing on the President Trumps agenda.

Got it.
McConnell will never figure out how to frame the DEMOCRAT challenger supporting President Trump, into a campaign strategy.

She's an attractive candidate. If she moved to NY and ran against Schumer or Gilibrand, I would definitely vote for her. Maybe NJ. It would be a no brainer if she ran against Menendez.

Yancey Ward said...

There are no conservative Democrats left in D.C. None. Sure, there are a few from red districts, but they won't survive long-term- a 2010 election will unseat them after 2-3 terms in office.

We saw this in 2006- a lot of so-called conservative Democrats running and winning, but they never vote the election talk.

Kentucky was a swing state when I was growing up- it voted with Carter in 1976 and then Reagan both times and Bush once, but then Clinton won it twice (though Perot had an effect in the state). However, the state is deeply red now- the eastern half used to be reliably blue until 2000. Now the only blue sections are the cores of Louisville and Lexington, and not even deep blue in Lexington.

Yancey Ward said...

And it sounds like McGrath can't fool herself- thus the flip flop.

Michael K said...

But I don't really think McGrath was staring into the swamp and got consume by it. That's why the "Psycho" swamp sequence came to mind. She's getting rolled in.

The Democrats have a very peculiar idea of military heroes. Kerry, for example. That admiral who ran for the House in Pennsylvania.

This woman, like Duckworth in Illinois, are heroes because they joined the military. Duckworth, in spite of complaints about her role in the VA, got elected to the Senate with Chicago votes.

It used to be common for most people in Congress, men of course, were veterans. Now, the women are chosen because they are women. Sort of like Dr Johnson's quote about women preaching.

Funny and classic. That group of LIVs are no longer paying attention so it’s time to reassure this other group of LIVs. In the last few years Republicans have made big progress in getting hip to the Democrat’s double-standard bullshit, but they still need to work on this particular skill.

This is the one area in which Turtle is delivering.

However, he has purposely and severely restricted Trumps ability to staff the executive agencies and fulfill policy promises the republicans have promised for a decade.

So, yes, still very swampy but we get our judges....and we could have had so much more but McConnell and Ryan believed the dems collusion and corruption lies so that was that.

And now that it is clear it was all a lie? Too late.

It's becoming clear that Trump isn't going away so some Dems try to come to terms. But this episode and the AOC v. Pelosi contest show that moving toward the center is now regarded as "opportunism" by Socialist-Dems, and will not be tolerated as it was in the last election. The "struggle against opportunism" or the refusal of centrism is now seen, by many Dems, as an essential part of the struggle to create a successful Socialist party in America by 2020.
