Yeah, but it was a bunch of White men, so we can't celebrate it. In fact we must condemn it, and praise the USSR for their diversity instead.

Did you know that if there had been a woman on the Apollo 11 launch, she wouldn't have been able to take a piss for 8 days and 4 hours?

You won't believe this, but the Progressives are seriously trashing the Moon Shot Program as all white men. They seem to want want reparations for the USA not shooting blacks , asians and women to the Moon too. They need to watch the Honeymooners and see Ralph Kramden's best line.

That was a joke. The idiots are loose.

No. There was that Black woman that did all the math in the basement. Nobody else could do it. I saw that on TV.

When those astronauts were on the moon I was on a submarine tender at Holy Loch, Scotland. A bunch of us were in the pilot house listening to the BBC radio coverage, when one of the guys got a phone call from his wife, across the Clyde in Gourock In those days the phone system on the north side of the Clyde was pre-WWII, mainly because the Luftwaffe never bothered to get that far. We could see both the moon, and the town of Gourock but we could hear the guys on the moon much better than we could hear my buddy's wife on the south side of the river.

ALLEGED landing :)

Margot Lee Shetterly was her name. There were others--"When the first five black women took their seat in the office in 1943, it was in a segregated office with a 'colored girls' bathroom and a table for the 'colored' computers," author Margot Lee Shetterly tells NPR's Michel Martin.

Apollo in real time. 11,000 hours of synced audio/video.

Since nothing was happening yet, I scrolled back to the beginning of the video, and watched for about 30 seconds. Warren being crudely insane/insanely crude, take your pick. Too much crazy bottom-of-the-barrel appeals to the bottom-of-the-barrel to keep watching.

I don't consider myself to be in any way a political naïf, but I rarely watch video or listen to audio of political speech, and I admit to being a bit shocked by how crass she is, how far gone in toxic schmaltz and downright Der Stürmer-grade demonization of the opposition.

This is really squalid stuff. Trump's rhetoric is a gentlemanly, sophisticated appeal to the disinterested intellect and our higher natures in comparison.

I shall now go cleanse my palate with a some Apollo 11 videos.

Don't believe the Ruskies have put a person of any gender on the moon. Nor even a transgender.

I'm pretty sure we figger in decimal in this country, etbass.

(I know you meant metric.)

Darrell said...

You mean "metric," don't you, Bucky?

etbass said...

Metric, right. And I know it is widely used but still not "the" standard.

While greater accuracy was available when necessary, most 1960s NASA engineers used slide rules, carrying out calculations usually no farther than 5 decimals places.

I talked to MITI managers in the early 1980s and Japan was ready to switch to standard measurments, which would have meant $100s of millions to American machine tool manufactures among others. If Japan switched surely many of the other countries would, too. Then Jimmy Carter made the announcement that the US would be going metric. Democrats fucking over American businesses as usual.

Metric, right. And I know it is widely used but still not "the" standard.

Actually, it is incorrect to say that we have a standard at all. We do not have an official weights and measures standard (even though the Constitution gives Congress the power to mandate one). We have a mess of traditional measures along with the metric system. Everything on your car, assuming it was made in the last thirty years or so (except the wheels and tires), is metric. We switched from measuring liquor and wine (but not beer) in imperial measurements (pint, fifth, quart) and switched to metric measures in the 1970's. Some liquids (e.g., cans of soda) are still sold in ounces, but larger bottles are sold by the liter. Almost all food is labelled in both English and metric measures. To top it all off, an English gallon is different from a U.S. gallon.

"I get that you want to credit Americans over the German-Americans though"
von Braun himself credited Goddard as being his inspiration.
There were very few people doing any practical liquid fuel rocketry. Goddard was the first.

The modern foot measurement is now based on the meter. Speaking as someone who uses metrology every day I have instruments in both.

The National Bureau of Standards might take issue with that. I have measuring tools the accuracy of which can be traced back to the bureau. They have to be so that everyone is on the same page.

"So do most weekend auto mechanics, rusty."
They don't usually deal in ten thousands of an inch, or micrometer of a millimeter. Been that way for decades.
I was introduced to the metric system in school long before 1976.

" You completely missed my point about American education,"
Oh no. I got it. Just showing you that experiences differ. My school district taught the metric system. I took to it. Most other students didn't.
No Mary Ellen. Not the smartest man in the room by any measure. Just a lot smarter than you.
No response was necessary Mary Ellen.

Ten years ago, the interstate between Atlanta and Birmingham was posted with mile markers and kilometer markers, I guess to condition us deplorables to the better European ways. Aggravated me to think of how many potholes could have been fixed with those maker posts.

Darrell said...

Metric is not magic or more precise than standard English. Precision machinists use thousandths or tens of thousandths of an inch anyway--fractional measurements don't enter into it. And, of course, all scientific formulas have standard measurement expressions/equivalents. Celsius is less detailed than Fahrenheit--I prefer the added data.

People still talk about a "Fifth of whiskey" even though it means nothing. And no one tells someone to get them 750 ml of Vodka. At least no one I know. They say "get me a quart of vodka".

Remember Jerry Ford - that dumbshit. He wanted to change the road signs to KM and have the US buy meat by the Kg. Nobody cares that all the STEM guys measure crap in Kg or Meters or whatever. Just keep your fucking Un-American hands off Miles, Pounds, Yards, and ounces. I don't want someone telling me to go 50 meters past the next stop sign to get my 12 centimeter long hot dog. Or they weather guy telling me, it'll be a hot 30 degrees tomorrow.

No metric system in US construction. Wall studs still every 16 inches and everything in yards, feet, inches and fractions.

The real shames are using "pounds" rather than slugs to indicate mass, and the related issue of ignoring the altitudinal discrepancy between spring scales and balances.
