"Mary Max, the wife of celebrated artist Peter Max, killed herself in her apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side over the weekend."

The Daily Mail reports, and I'm blogging this because 2 weeks ago, I blogged "Several household employees also made allegations of neglect, including that Ms. [Peter] Max withheld food from her husband and sometimes put 'large Brazil nuts' in his smoothies, on which he might choke," quoting "Dementia Stopped a Major Artist From Painting. For Some, That Spelled a Lucrative Opportunity/Now Peter Max’s associates are trading lurid allegations of kidnapping, hired goons, attempted murder by Brazil nut and art fraud on the high seas" (NYT).

Well, when one party to a lawsuit self-eliminates, settling the lawsuit becomes that much easier.

Article says she died of nitrogen asphyxiation. Overdose on whip-its?

Am I the only one who noticed she looks a lot like wife number one?

The old '70s black and white pictures of Max are pretty cool documents.

Yes, after 12 years I finally got an avatar ...Thank you, I'm glad you like it ...It was a gift from my father, Loki. Yes, that Loki. Dad is really just misunderstood by most, he means well. It's sis you have to worry about.

Her name makes me think of the very annoying children's ditty Miss Mary Mack:

Reimagined:

Miss Mary Max Max Max
Did some bad acts acts acts
Hoped Pete would choke choke choke
So he would croak croak croak

But when found out out out
She didnt shout shout shout
Said kiss my ass ass ass
Inhaled some gas gas gas

Said "Fuck you all all all"
I hope you bawl bawl bawl
Now Pete's all alone lone lone
Can paint my headstone stone stone

I wonder how the reporters of that expose feel about this. Personally, I'd feel awful if someone I'd exposed killed themselves.

Too bad she wasn't named Minnie.

@daskol, they’re celebrating with champagne toasts.

Yes, well you’re human.

Don't do anything you wouldn't want on the front page of the newspaper?

What I noticed is that Mary uses very similar poses in her photos, especially with her face. It makes her look photoshopped.

(I know a woman who does a similar thing with her face in photos. It's very strange and made worse in that there's something slightly unnatural in the pose she adopts.)

If only someone had reached out to her and helped her undo her whiteness, things might have ended much more happily for the Max family.

died of nitrogen asphyxiation.

Nitrogen is not poisonous by itself. How does one do this?? Buy a bottle of nitrogen, and a cannula?

Ya' know......I didn't know you could hang yourself on a door knob like Jagger's friend L'Wren Scott.

Women really go for the style points.

I assume that she put a bag overhead and depleted the oxygen resulting in death, nitrogen being a variable from 80 to 100 per cent.

Or at least 99 percent

Ah, nitrogen. Our English made the word from Nitro + Gen. The word "nitro" seems to trace back to natrium carbonate which contains no nitrogen. The French lost preeminence in chemistry to the Germans in the 19th century. The Germans call nitrogen Stickstoff, loosely meaning "choking stuff" (note the vaunted German language precision and brutality). Lavoisier preferred the name azote -- meaning "without life" but he couldn't "head off" criticism.

It took them only an instant to cut off his head, but France may not produce another such head in a century.
