PACIFIC SEA LEVELS RISING VERY SLOWLY AND NOT ACCELERATING

Albert Parker -- Independent Scientist, Bundoora Australia
Clifford Ollier -- School of Agriculture and Environment, University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia

"Abstract: Over the past decades, detailed surveys of the Pacific Ocean atoll islands show no sign of drowning because
of accelerated sea-level rise. Data reveal that no atoll lost land area, 88.6% of islands were either stable or increased in
area, and only 11.4% of islands contracted. The Pacific Atolls are not being inundated because the sea level is rising
much less than was thought. The average relative rate of rise and acceleration of the 29 long-term-trend (LTT) tide
gauges of Japan, Oceania and West Coast of North America, are both negative, −0.02139 mm yr−1 and −0.00007 mm yr−2
respectively. Since the start of the 1900s, the sea levels of the Pacific Ocean have been remarkably stable."

The color made me think about the weddings I went to over the years where purple was the theme. I tried to remember how many of those marriages made it through the ups and downs of life.

Thinking of weddings, the Anglican Prayer Book service for weddings is about as good as you can get in the English Language to consecrate a lifelong commitment (it beats swearing to the Constitution "so help me...ME). Shakespeare, the King James Bible, the Anglican Prayer Book are about the best you can get in the English Language if to take some vow.

If you have had no sense of Christian God, I'm guessing Hitchens, Hume, and Neil deGrasse Tyson sound something like Shakespeare.

Josh Barro: My take on the debate, which I elaborate on @LRCkcrw today, is Biden did pretty well. He has the easiest task, not because he’s the front runner, but because his message is so simple: “Did you like Obama? I’ll do more of that.” All Biden has to do is play the hits and he did. Harris did well too but everyone but Biden not only has to make the case for themselves but a Why Not Biden case. And if the Stan Greenberg research is indicative, both Biden and Harris made a positive impression in that exchange. Ties go to the leader.

Me: But he's a weak front runner only at 30% so who knows? Honestly I didn't watch the debate. The election is a long time from now. Why can't it be a 6 week election this is crazy.

"Did Kammy administer a death blow to Biden? I didn't think so at the time, because I thought the entire episode was a joke, and that Kammy was being a racial demogogue."

The media is doing exactly what I predicted prior to the debate- they don't want Biden, and it doesn't matter if he was Obama's VP. They want a female, a black female, or a homosexual- in that order. A white male is at the bottom of the media wish list. So Warren was declared the winner Wednesday, and Harris was declared the winner last night. Now, I thought Warren did a poor job after the first 1/2 hour and I thought Booker was the best of that group by a pretty wide margin. Harris probably did win last night in my judgment, and I didn't think Biden did anything memorable and good until he was attacked.

I had put Harris at the top months ago, but had started to doubt that judgment since about late April, but I now think I was right all along- she is going to win the Dem nomination.

The 'Surveillance Scores' Companies Use to Rip You Off Might Be Totally Illegal

"In a 38-page petition filed Tuesday, the Consumer Education Foundation, a California nonprofit with close ties to the group Consumer Watchdog, asked the FTC to explore whether the use of surveillance scores constitute “unfair or deceptive practices” under the Federal Trade Commission Act."

"...The petition cites a study conducted by researchers at Northeastern University in 2014 examining the pricing practices of online stores. The study found that consumers faced higher prices on a number of sites compared to those offered an automated browser with no personal history.

The same researchers subsequently released a Chrome extension enabling users to perform searches across five online stores to learn if they were being charged a different price based on their personal data. The Consumer Education Foundation writes that it recently used the tool to conduct its own research. In several instances, the browser with no links to a real person was offered products at prices cheaper than those of its researchers.

The difference in price for a toilet-paper-roll holder on Walmart’s website was more than $10. A box of ballpoint pens: $9.69 when Walmart had access to the customers’ personal data; $4.15 when it didn’t. Walmart did not respond to a request for comment...."

Can DuckDuckGo Become the Anti-Google? (marketplace.org) 163
Posted by EditorDavid on Saturday September 29, 2018 @03:34PM from the I'm-feeling-lucky dept.

'"Recently, a privacy-oriented search engine called DuckDuckGo raised $10 million from a Canadian pension fund," reports Marketplace.org, saying the privacy-focused search engine is "trying to establish itself as the anti-Google." An anonymous reader quotes their report:

"So it's like Google, except when you search on it, you're completely anonymous," said Gabriel Weinberg, CEO of the company. The searches are encrypted. The site knows where you are, but only while you're searching, and it doesn't store your personal information. "We serve you the search results and we throw away your personal information...so your IP address and things like that. And we don't actually store any cookies by default. And so when you search on DuckDuckGo, it's like every time you're a new user and we know nothing about you..." Weinberg said about a quarter of Americans have taken some action to protect their privacy, and DuckDuckGo searches have been growing about 50 percent a year.

"We are proud to have a profitable business model that doesn't rely on collecting personal data," the company tweeted in June, and this week they also shared a quote from a Harvard Business Review article that asked "How far can the surveillance economy go?"'

And since when did we in the U.S. start dividing up liberal democrats into east and west?

The problem, Chuck, is that "Western Liberalism" isn't widely understood either. It's not like he said "Liberal Democracy" or "Western Democracy" or even "Western Liberal." The "ism" suffix in "liberalism" tinges the term "liberal" towards that sick and twisted branch of philosophy that you and I know as "liberalism" of the sort practiced by Pelosi et al. So I give Trump a pass and call this just he latest "gotcha" attempt to smear Trump. Fail

My first thought after reading Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen was "Was this really necessary?" I would much rather have read another story about Miles or Ivan. Hell even a story about Mark.

Sometimes there seems to be a competition among writers to see who can be the most woke. Bujold would definitely be one of the favorites.

How is this controversial? Democratic politicians in places like Los Angeles and San Francisco have been abject failures and have tarnished the reputation of the word "liberal". The Democrats and the Left agree, which is why they have returned to the term "Progressive". Once people wake up to the disaster that the Progressives have been again, they'll move on to something else. Maybe back to liberal, but probably on to something like Antifa.

This could change if Democrats (and Republicans) would put up a better candidate. That's all it would take.

I'm a mechanistic chemist by training. There is a class of chemical reactions called substitution, wherein one entity is swapped for another; old bands are broken and new bonds are formed. There are two basic ways for that to happen: (1) the old bond breaks and the new entity quickly comes in and forms a new bond; the tipping point is when the the old bond breaks. (2) The other mechanism is when the new entity comes in and assists the departure of the old entity; the tipping point in the latter case is when both entities (leaving and departing) are still tenuously bound. The latter mechanism is faster in general and "easier." Yet the Dems and you insist on the the hard way: "blow Trump out first and then think of a replacement." It won't fly Orville. It's bassackwards. Stop wasting our time on destruction 100% of the time and focus on promoting your alternative. That is what Trump did.

I predict that Biden will fall, due to age and exhaustion, But Harris will not succeed either because she is fraud at heart and protected by the media.
