Ridiculous conversation about me and Trump.

From the comments section of a post of mine that went up this morning — the title is a quote from someone else — "Time’s up, baby boomers. It’s Gen X’s turn now":
COMMENTER: "Why do you show so much interest in the Democratic primary? It seems your goal is to do anything that will keep Trump in office."

ME: "What in this post seems to be in service to that goal? Do I seem to be helping Biden and you think Biden is a weak opponent for Trump? If that's your idea, click on the 'biden' tag and read the last 10 posts I wrote about Biden and make sense of your theory. Or does 'seems' just mean you looked at one thing and a whole flood of imaginative ideas came into your head?

COMMENTER (addressing my first question, "What in this post seems to be in service to that goal?"): "Not this one. The preponderance of all the others. They seem to convey an appreciative sort of invincibility about him."

ME, without reading on to see how he answered my other questions: "Do you have any sense of how ludicrous that is?"
And let me also quote this, from Nobody:
You know that anybody who wants to undermine Trump with Althouse’s readers could easily do so by getting specific in the comments with actual cases of Trump “corruption” and then defending them against objections. But when the anti Trump comments all and I mean ALL amount to either trivialities, or hyperbolic denunciations reeking of kerosene breath, or vague smears that the commenter refuses to back up with facts, then it seems like the trolls here are doing more to support Trump than Althouse is. She is giving you the forum, all of you, and yet you don’t take it on. How can we not draw the conclusion that you guys have nothing?

Going on pearl clutching about pee pee tapes for two years, and then showing zero humility when it all turned out to be bullshit is just one thing.

well, I would be shocked if anyone changed their vote from 2016 to 2020. Seems like a waste of time to me, to try to convince anyone of anything. There is only one commenter on this blog who might change their vote. I doubt Inga will vote 3rd party again, she's in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, the amount who voted 3rd party in 2016 was abnormally high.

Honestly, I don't think a blog post will change anything with the election. Who knows? But the tone of the posts suggest Althouse finds Trump to be quite likeable, charming, intelligent, personally appealing, and humorous. Meanwhile, she appears to view Biden as dumb, inarticulate with words, and senile.

Who should we talk about?

We should talk about me. We should talk about how everyone but I are evil stupid people and how I am imbued with superior and unique goodness and wisdom in my passions and opinions. And we should talk about what a burden it is for me to be trapped in a democratic republic with such inferior fellow voters, and how important it is for me and mine to get power to fix that intolerable situation.

That seems to be the item most discussed, lately.

Go poll the average voter and ask them if the tone of your Trump coverage is anywhere near as critical as theirs. Or maybe you buy the theory that the media has a conspiracy to "not be nice" to him. ;-)

Ann, are you going to translate what"Nobody' said or are you going to leave us to wonder just what the hell he/she is saying?

My best effort translates that we commenters are stupid enough to be taken in by some sort of need to defend Trump's sometimes bad behavior. My reading of the bulk of the commenters here is that are content with Trump's performance in office and are willing to overlook his lack of hypocrisy regarding his past. I read a column recently that made the point that Trump's major problem as a politician is that he is not a big enough hypocrite. I thought that very true.

I don't think that it's fair to say that our hostess has political intentions when she posts. Nor do I believe her posts reflect her own political objectives. That said, I have no doubt that she largely disagrees with my political objectives; however, I strongly believe that she is balanced and fair with her posts. Which is why I have read this blog for so many years.

She picks things apart dispassionately like a surgeon, and her posts invariably shine a light on an aspect of an issue that I would otherwise generally miss. It's often an interesting perspective. If Biden comes off on this blog as dopey and inarticulate, it's because that is how he presents himself regardless of whether he is neither. If Trump comes off here sometimes as smart and humorous, it's only because in spite of why she might otherwise dislike him, that is how he presents himself, and she has the grace to cut through the noise and point it out.

I never feel steered or directed around here. I get to peak through her looking glass and see interesting things.

As an avid serial lurker, I've not found Ann Althouse a DJT supporter as much as a sympathizer. He's been besieged since day 1, but somehow managed to prosecute positive change.
The leadership choices proffered by the DNC, so far, are laughable. As was the last.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Talk about hyperbolic. Here's the most opinionated, subjective, non-factual editorial available on Trump discourse:

You know that anybody who wants to undermine Trump with Althouse’s readers could easily do so by getting specific in the comments with actual cases of Trump “corruption” and then defending them against objections. But when the anti Trump comments all and I mean ALL amount to either trivialities, or hyperbolic denunciations reeking of kerosene breath, or vague smears that the commenter refuses to back up with facts, then it seems like the trolls here are doing more to support Trump than Althouse is. Going on pearl clutching about pee pee tapes for two years, and then showing zero humility when it all turned out to be bullshit is just one thing.

And then there's this:

ME, without reading on to see how he answered my other questions:

Awww. Someone who doesn't realize how uncritical her Trump coverage comes across to one of the few non-right wingers regularly visiting this blog - a view that's in line with how a majority of voters (maybe not in swing states) think, wants to get indignant and not extend the same respect of reading the critic's thoughts that she thinks the critic should extend to her. Ok, you don't read me, you think I don't read -- (or answer! How shameful my ducking the interrogation!) -- you... Well, once again we know how the majority of the country thinks and if you don't respect that then just have the courage to say so.

Ludicrous is the coin of the realm. Trump obsession is everywhere. People I’ve known for years, who are eminently sensible in their normal interactions, turn into jabbering idiots when they think about Bad Orange Man. It’s the most bizarre thing I’ve seen. If normal people become that way, it’s easy to see why It would set off a garden variety internet troll.

I don't think that it's fair to say that our hostess has political intentions when she posts.

OH, come on. Someone who invents a "Derangement Syndrome" tag about a deranged president is clearly just trying to be inflammatory.

Nor do I believe her posts reflect her own political objectives.

Maybe not. But they could at least vaguely approach some understanding of how normal Americans (i.e. the majority) think. They didn't vote for him and Republicans did it because they're tribalists who hated Hillary. They don't think he's a decent man, but effective for them politically. That's worth criticizing.

That said, I have no doubt that she largely disagrees with my political objectives; however, I strongly believe that she is balanced and fair with her posts.

Balanced and fair can mean anything. Specifically vis-a-vis Trump though, do you have examples?

Which is why I have read this blog for so many years.

It's a good blog because it's contentious and generally respects an aim at increasing speech.

She picks things apart dispassionately like a surgeon,

There's dispassionate, and then there's crude. Mengele was a surgeon of sorts, after all.

If Trump comes off here sometimes as smart and humorous, it's only because in spite of why she might otherwise dislike him, that is how he presents himself, and she has the grace to cut through the noise and point it out.

Again - says who? Reaction is in the eyes of the beholder. We know his die-hard base love him. Most everyone else either hates him/thinks he's a douchebag or just likes his use to them politically. No need to explain why his base loved something humorous or crude that he said. They love everything he says. And he knows this - cue the quote about shooting someone on 5th Avenue and not losing votes. Hello.

I never feel steered or directed around here. I get to peak through her looking glass and see interesting things.

They're interesting, just like her photos. But the problem with fish-eye lenses is that they can also distort.

I'm here to remind the folks cracking themselves up in the funhouse mirrors that occasionally reality is worth looking at, too. Sue me.

If you hate the opinions of the majority of Americans, that's fine. Just take responsibility for it. And take responsibility for the Republican resort to then restrict the vote and disenfranchise and pretend that "illegals" are inflating the disapproval this presidential goon is awarded with.

That's fine. Sometimes he has funny things to say. And he pushes political boundaries beyond where decent people believe they should be drawn in saying them. That must be incredibly invigorating for a political faction (conservatives) not known for drawing personalities that are anything but uptight.

But she's trying to offer political analysis. Every day. And talks about being neutral, or objective... or whatever it means to be an effective pundit interested in reality. And the reality is that this guy is not someone that most Americans like or respect on a personal level at all, or see as a respectable leader. He would still lose the popular vote again tomorrow. It's only our messed-up priorities toward manual laborers in deindistrialized swing states that won (and could win again) a guy like him the EC. This is obvious. It's important, but it's obvious. And all the other chatter about how his personality comes across and all that jazz is just a bunch of noise - except when it comes to his attitude about standing up to economic competitors like China.

The latest anti-Trump meme that popped up on my Facebook page today was Star Wars themed. Darth Vader label under Earth's pic Taxi Vader under Trump's pic. It's possible to give it a passing grade for cleverness, but it gets a failing grade on facts. Now- find a liberal who doesn't believe it. Gonna be difficult.

I see posts all the time calling Trump an anti-Semite. A man with Jewish grandchildren. THE president who finally moved the US embassy to the capital of Israel, Jerusalem. These same voices are silent on Ilhan Omar. Anyone who wants to tell me that she and the other two muslims in Congress aren't both anti-Jewish and anti-Christian can go procreate with themselves. But anti-Trumpers remain strangely silent on them

I see prominent Democrats saying Trump is a security risk. No explanation why, he just is. Every one of Hillary's emails from her private email address on her unlawfully maintained server went to a non-US email address. This is a fact. But yet, no reasonable prosecutor.... A line that will be infamous in future histories.

I have yet to hear or see a single factual criticism of Trump that doesn't display ahuge amount of hypocrisy. Trump said women would let a rich man grab them by the pussy. He likely did say it, but there's no proof he actually did it. William Jefferson Clinton mouthed all the liberal platitudes about women - and there's considerable evidence he grabbed women by the pussy. His wife, who BTW lost the last presidential election and still hasn't accepted the fact, headed up the bimbo eruption team. Trump doesn't have one of those.

Trump was far from my first choice to be the Republican nominee. Curiously, he was the Democrats first choice. When it came down to voting for POTUS, Hillary, if not my absolute last choice of any constitutionally eligible citizens, was pretty close to last. Trump which far from being my first choice was the only one on the ballot who could beat her. And he did.

THat's cool - you hate technology and progress. I get it. Without CA America's per capita GDP would be closer to Europe's or even CHina's - a ranking you'd probably identify with as much as you do the political culture of the place.

THe majority of people on the East coast also didn't vote for him - another 25% at least of U.S. population.

It would be nice to see the interior secede - economically speaking, of course. They don't make shit anyway. We'd take care of our own magnificently if it weren't for hand-outs to the economic laggards of the Semi-Dependent Complaint-Based Cantons of Flyover-stan. Infrastructure would be amazing.

Meanwhile if impeachment succeeds, 2020 will see a 2010-like wipeout of moderate Democrats from red or purple House districts, and Trump, exonerated by the Senate, will be invincible. I don't think presidents get remembered for the taste of their cum, Shouting Thomas. According to people who aren't paid for playing honky tonk piano in church recitals, he's rounding out the bottom at #43rd place. Apparently the pride he instills in you as an angry old incontinent white man isn't figured into his presidential greatness.

You’ll be remembered, Ritmo, as a dumb ranter who jerked off over his own rants.

But I somehow struggle to understand what it is that you'll be remembered for, other than failing to compete effectively against diversity hire job candidates and spending your golden years bitching anonymously online to everyone within earshot of it. Awwwww.

Thomas Jefferson had children who were his slaves as children, but were freed on coming of age (21?) per agreement with their mother. Of the four children who survived childhood, two were duly manumitted by Jefferson; the last two by their half-sister, Patsy Jefferson Randolph, after his death.
And by Virginia law at the time they were all "white," having 1/4 or less "negro blood," so there was no danger of their children being enslaved. At least after being freed. I guess things could become complicated in the Old Dominion with conflicting laws.

ANywho, the fact of the matter is this - Trump is indeed presiding over an improving job situation for low-income workers at the moment. Maybe that will be maintained by 2020 and maybe his mercantilism and hatred of immigrants helped. He has working class appeal but it's not guaranteed and any FDR-style Democrat (not all or most of them are) beat him at that. They see through it.

And like it or not, he is replacing the extraordinary 20th-century alliances that forged and maintained American greatness with a pre WWII imperial saber-rattling nationalism. That's not what made us great abroad and it's not going to keep us secure. It's a retrenchment to an inferior policy and one that kept us too weak to do anything about Hitler and Tojo until they clobbered us in Hawaii.

GDP is simply a measure of how Wall Street's doing. Good for Wall Street but that's not what this is about. And if he continues de-insuring Americans, they will punish him for that, too. It depends on whether they like a few dollars extra an hour more or less than being bankrupted by medical bills, I guess.

I peruse liberal thoughts at threadreaderapp on a regular basis. They’re completely unhinged. This from @SethAbramson: Curatorial journalism is coming to the Mueller Report—and when it does, America will discover counterintelligence connections in the Report that lay bare the entire Kremlin strategy for gaining influence over Trump's Russia policy during the election. I'm writing the summary now. WTF? Over! It’s like he’s never heard of the Russian mercenary unit that suffered 100% casualties on 5 Feb 2018. (Note- casualties doesn’t mean deaths) Seems to miss the fact that pro-fracking and drilling policies that Trump has enacted hurts Russia- and the anti-fracking and drilling policies that would help Russia are all supported by Democrats…. No one can actually point out ANY pro-Russian thing Trump is responsible for as POTUS. But there’s a whole lot of his policies that hurt Russia.

Now let’s look at Georgia NeSmith, PhD @PracticalLefty. Apparently a cat lady- Some have argued that trump will never resign because he faces prosecution once he leaves office. Well, he has to leave office some time even if it takes dragging him kicking & screaming.

trump does not do well under heat, and the very act of impeachment will put him under...

...heat greater than he's ever experienced before.

……….trump has an option I've not seen anyone else talk about.

He can flee to a country that doesn't have an extradition treaty w/the US.

The list below includes several countries where he'd get a warm welcome & are happy to "recruit" super rich ppl [tho that wealth is questionable]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4xs8DuWkAA_EUJ.png

Montenegro, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and...wait for it...

RUSSIA.

IOW, not all "shit hole countries."

Russia's FSB would expedite his escape.
Once again, WTF? Over! A clear case where PhD means piled higher and deeper with no connection to intelligence or reality.

Then there’s Patrick Chovanec @prchovanec He’s a little more sensical. The Trump Administration fundamentally misunderstands the sources of US strength against China, tangible and intangible.

It thinks it can out-racket the racketeer, out-bully the bully, out-scam the scammer, out-commissar the commissar. We lose when we play that game.
Reality check- When have we ever played that game? Trump, to my knowledge, is the first. We know China ignores patents. We know China steals technology. And companies that have opened manufacturing plants in China have discovered that China feels free to duplicate the factories- and the products built in them, without any compensation. At the very least, he recognizes that China doesn’t play fair. Doesn’t offer a solution, just criticizes Trump.

This is just a small sample of leftist delusion. From what was on threadreaderapp just now. It’s constantly updated. No facts. Supposition, hearsay, rumors, and as demonstrated by Seth Abramson- either complete denial or complete ignorance of facts.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

That's nice, Gospace. For a similar smattering of right-wing delusion, go sample the ravings of the guy that shot up the synagogues in Pittsburg, the one in Poway, the mosques in New Zealand, ad infinitum ad nauseam. Or the guys at Charlottesville. Or Richard Spencer. Or Bruno Snuffleupagus. Etc. etc. etc. Typical, standard right-wing stuff - usually accompanied by a mass murder or two. And then you have Fen and Achilles regularly dropping in to inform us of the impending race war (or whatever they want to kill millions of Americans for) that they're stocking up for. Pretty normal stuff, right?

I don't think he can. But I can check threadreaderapp every few hours and come up with more. The examples he pulled up are nobodies that nobody paid any attention to. OTOH, Seth Abramson is a law professor who's widely followed whose scribblings regularly appear in MSM. Georgia NeSmith is a retired professor with a bunch of published articles in MSM. Patrick Chovanec is another professor, and a Republican. And an apparent anti-Trumper, though not as rabid as some others are. They're not nobodies who I quoted.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

The examples he pulled up are nobodies that nobody paid any attention to.

Except for all the people they killed. Trump is doing a great job of massively increasing the numbers of massacres at synagogues and assaults on Jews in America.

If you think that's a legacy to be proud of, just say so. No need to sweep it under the rug - unless you're a normal person and accept with that tiny little part of your brain that remains "moral," that it isn't.

Anyways, it's Trump's "baby" - to quote his AG William Barr. It's what Trump's white nationalism is all about. Just goes with the territory.

Gospace said...

Ahhhh... Trump's white nationalism. Another fantasy. Prove it. Document it. Show actual factual statements where he supports white nationalism. Document his behavior that supports your stupid ignorant claim.

"Clown" is a terrible try at a Trumpian nickname.

Trump's nicknames are, if nothing else, extremely memorable and individualized. Low energy Jeb. Lyin' Ted Cruz. Little Marco Rubio, Crooked Hillary.

I suppose Crooked Hillary is kind of generic, in that "Crooked" is a frequent insult thrown at politicians. But Hillary has enough of a past that it's pretty tailored, too. I don't know if Sleepy Joe Biden has any staying power. Too much of a greatest hits feel, recycling the one that worked on Jeb.

"Clown" is just a generic term of abuse. Today he's a clown, tomorrow he's Voldemort. It's not specific enough.

"Short fingered vulgarian" is a unique Trumpian nickname that's actually about Trump, and it's stuck to him for decades.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

The white nationalists sure hear (and admire!) that dog whistle! So apparently it's effective to them, even if you don't want to see it. THat's kind of what matters, here - and wasn't the NZ guy a Trump-lover, too? Doesn't that count for something, what he inspires abroad?

When you call Mexicans "rapists, murderers," incompetents to fairly adjudicate cases by virtue of nationality, then you're obviously demeaning other people as inferior - which makes it impossible that conclude that you don't think of your own as superior. Trump also wanted to make sure 5 acquitted black New Yorkers were given the death penalty for a rape that a court of law could not find them guilty of. I don't know how this qualifies as fair on racial issues.

Anyway, do you think the number of massacres of Jews at prayer under Trump has been:

A. Lower than normal
B. Higher than usual
C. Just about right?

Once again, here's Drumpf praising his "German blood." It's "great stuff," he says.

Trump is a disgrace to American ideals. To bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.

Whole counties — plural — in California voted for Trump in 2016 by more than 70%.

Including me. I voted for Trump, despite residing in California (particularly, as I do, in a highly “progressive” county — Santa Cruz) — where arguably voting other than Democratic is completely fruitless and wasted, while certainly many opposed to Clinton (like me) or favoring Trump must have just stayed home in that realization — but I went in and voted, because I wanted to minimize (with my personal 1 vote assistance) the degree to which Hillary might (if that circumstance were to happen, as indeed it did) later come back to claim that she “won” the popular vote while losing the electoral vote — as if that were somehow significant within our constitutional system!

I expect I wasn't alone in doing so. Thus, that 4 million+ (otherwise useless) vote for Trump in California.

When you call Mexicans "rapists, murderers," incompetents to fairly adjudicate cases by virtue of nationality, then you're obviously demeaning other people as inferior.

Take a look at NYT reporting of the immigrant caravans transiting Mexico to get to the US.

Almost every story discusses the murder, robbery, rape, sex trafficking and general mayhem the caravans are subject to.

Yet not one of them, that I've seen, has gotten close to anything like (paraphrasing here) "but I'm sure there are good Mexicans among the illegal immigrants, too."

Yet Trump is, somehow, the racist, and the NYT isn't.

How the heck does that work?

So if you call *any* Mexican a rapist, are you a racist, because it’s a matter of record that many rapists cross the border with impunity, as do drug runners and murderers. If he said *all* Mexicans were criminals, that would be one thing, But you are far more racist with your endless denunciation of white midwesterners.

Leland said...

This reminds me when CBS fact checked Trump on the percentage of women sexually assaulted in these caravans only to find Trump actually hedged on the low side. It would be great if Democrats, who typically claim to be worried about human trafficking in general, would acknowledge the dangers in human trafficking over our southern border, rather than providing sanctuary to the traffickers.

So having "German blood" means you are a Nazi? This only makes sense if an entire people, a nation of 82 million, is nothing more than a symbol for one awful event in its history. One of Trump's better qualities is that he refuses to bow down to this kind of superficial group think.
