Maybe concentrate on winning the game...

Here's something that went out in the Milwaukee Bucks' Twitter feed last night (as they were losing the third game in a row in the Eastern Conference finals):

Even if they'd won, what kind of example is this? Beer chugging? And it's touted in the Wisconsin State Journal, under the headline "Brew Crew: Watch as Christian Yelich refuses to be upstaged by Aaron Rodgers, David Bakhtiari in beer chugging contest." ESPN has "Brew-haha: Yelich, Rodgers chug at Bucks game."

Shit, 3/4’s of the fans are gossiping with their girlfriends, yukking it up with their bros, playing Candy Crush, making their fourth trip to the concessions, anything but watching the game. Give me the chubby, incel stats geek any day.

Basically, no one should care if these guys are at the game. Being well-known because you play a sport or put on other entertainments doesn't make you generally interesting.

Someone is drinking beer in Wisconsin? Huh. Who'da thunk it?

This is why the Lions will beat the Packers this year. Or...maybe not.

First, you do understand that the Buck's Twitter person has nothing to do with the game. It wasn't like Giannis was chugging.

Second, lighten up Francis.

Curious George said...

Good thing it wasn't a cock sucking challenge, Bakhtiari and Yellich wouldn't stand a chance.

Menahem Globus said...

If I was in Wisconsin I'd be drinking heavily too. Speaking of which 'Buy One Get One Free' Leinenkugel at Publix this week.

Clearly not Bakhtiari's first rodeo.

An example of men being men. Bad, bad.

The Bucks Twitter feed is its corporate presence, its branding. I think the branding should be that they've got a great team and they are winning or trying their damnedest to win. They lost their third game in a row last night. They were up 2-0 in the series and now they are down 3-2. Enthusing about beer chugging is pathetic. A lot of what spectator sports is is demonstrating great physical prowess for the amazement and edification of the people at home, especially the very young who still have hopes of participating in sports competition. This is the opposite of binge drinking.

What?! No coverage of the farting contest they had on the way home from the game?

I saw this on ESPN.com where beer-chugging is described as antics:

Their antics couldn't inspire the Bucks to a win...

Okay, I'd like my crow butterfly cut and medium well.

Yesterday I boasted that NBA basketball was so predictable, I could pick one game at random and forecast the outcome: "Whoever shoots last will win by a margin of 3 or less"

Raptors did shoot last but won by a 6 point margin, 105-99

You guys recommend a red or white with crow?

Bartender Jeffrey Morganthaler has recognized the good folks of Wisconsin are elite level drinkers and there’s plenty of evidence to back that up. That is to say they drink the appropriate things at the appropriate times, know how to properly sustain a morning buzz into the afternoon then evening, then do it again tomorrow.

Chugging contest as the Bucks lose another one is a pro move. Lean into it instead of whinging.

Sebastian said...

"Enthusing about beer chugging is pathetic."

Correct. It's bad, very bad.

Almost as pathetic as the way they lost.

It all celebrates the human capacity for play.

Any DUIs on the way home?

Men, sports, beer, humor and friendly competition - what's not to like?

The Buck fans at the game seemed to like it too!

Fuck Twitter

Do you watch professional basketball?

I see no spirit of playfulness. The players look professional or, if there is emotion, it's aggressiveness and (I hate to see this on my team) fear.

rehajm said...

My QB never drinks beer. Something about not being able to hold a cup with those six rings...

Sebastian said...

"You guys recommend a red or white with crow?"

No, no red or white for you, buddy. H2O. Enjoy.

On the larger issue: NBA basketball is so predictable that no one predicted at the beginning of the year that the Celtics would perform as poorly as they did, that Toronto and the Sixers would need seven games, that the Bucks with the ascendant superstar and the best record would lose at home to the established superstar, and so on and so forth.

Leland said...

I believe men, and women, should have the right to drink beer. When the basketball team is tanking, and Alyssa Milano is withholding sex from her husband; then men are going to enjoy just drinking some beer on their down time.

With an apostrophe catastrophe to boot!

Moving the goalposts. And it clear you haven't been to a Bucks game, or an NBA game because of this:

"They lost their third game in a row last night. They were up 2-0 in the series and now they are down 3-2. Enthusing about beer chugging is pathetic. A lot of what spectator sports is is demonstrating great physical prowess for the amazement and edification of the people at home, especially the very young who still have hopes of participating in sports competition. This is ridiculous Althouse. There is nothing but goofy antics at NBA games during EVERY pause in the action. Nothing to do with the game. People are more happy catching a t-shirt shot from an air cannon than a three pointer.

And people at home didn't see the chugging I don't believe...I didn't see it. It was on their twitter feed.

Finally, this wasn't binge drinking. Yellich had a half of a beer. Rodgers had 3/4 of a beer. Bakhtiari had three.

I think you need to add your that's not fun(ny) tag.

Bay Area Guy said...

If Naomi Wolf had chugged a beer on camera at the Bucks game, my heart woulda gone a-flutter.

Go Raptors!

The ratings for the eastern finals are down 48% from last year. Presumably because a Canadian team is playing. Also, the refereeing in all the Raptors' series has been .... eye catching. I think these are connected.

Hopefully, after Saturday, the Bucks will have nothing more to tweet about!

Sebastian said...

"Do you watch professional basketball?"

Yes. You?

"I see no spirit of playfulness."

Well, they are trying to win. But I gather you have never seen Steph Curry play, playfully.

"The players look professional"

No kidding!

"or, if there is emotion"

The "or" is very funny. ICWYDT.

"it's aggressiveness"

Imagine that! Like, trying to steal or dunk the ball or something? Foul a player on purpose?

"and (I hate to see this on my team) fear."

It's a shame, really, that when one team plays better the opponent may feel "fear." Can't we all get along and just play?

Curious George said...

Toronto made the playoffs last year. The reason is simple. It's because no Lebron. It's like Tiger and golf.

Sebastian said...

"There is nothing but goofy antics at NBA games"

Exactly. It's entertainment. It's how losing teams draw crowds. Nothing sophisticated about it, doesn't make the game any better, but there it is. Often on weekday evenings -- to the consternation of schoolmarms everywhere.

Leland said...

So true, yet so much burn.

My (Wisconsin) nephew's brother-in-law is a liquor salesman.

What's all this BS about chugging beer?

I bet more people watching the gamer either have or will participate in beer chugging than have or will participate in professional sports.

Not really. It's tribal warfare, domesticated.

You don't understand men any more than I understand women. I know it's cute to think we are simple and you are complex, but we just fed you line that so you would leave us the fuck alone

Under a buck!

You and my doctor. Got blood work back yesterday, she says my Vitamin D count is so low (less than 7) I should be dead. Wants me to sigh a waiver so she can drag me around the country as a specimen for her Walking Dead thesis.

Ann, you're not from here. But you've been here long enough to know that we take our beer chugging seriously. We have, what?, 12 of the top 20 drunkest cities in America. This is our culture. Embrace it.

“Isn’t that the team the derailed any chance of a grand slam” ...

“Slam” sounds violent. Instead use “grand close.”
Example: “She heard the car door close... mildly... softly... tenderly. With barely a whiff of his beery toxic misogyny.”

How about a nice RAVENSwood Old Vines Zinfandel?

Unfortunately, I have the same last name as a famous Napa wine maker/consultant which leads people to get me gift bottles with that name occasionally. Not at all to my taste. Very alcoholic and overextracted warm weather wines. But I appreciate the thought.

No Curious George, The Raptors we’re not in last year's Eastern finals, which was Cleveland vs Boston. The ratings are down 48% compared to that match up. Neither Cleveland nor Boston is Canadian.
