"Instagram will test hiding the number of likes and views that photos and videos receive — a central aspect of its platform — to rein in competitive tendencies and make the experience a little 'less pressurized.'"

"Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, said the change is designed to minimize the stress of posting online, where users can fixate on how many likes their videos draw. 'We want people to worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about,' he said Tuesday during Facebook’s annual developer conference, F8.... Hiding the counts could potentially introduce new problems for users, such as diminishing the feeling of camaraderie from liking a popular post tied to a social cause or a massive in-joke.... Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey said last week that if he could build his social network anew, he would rethink its emphasis on likes and retweets as markers of success. In a prototype of the Twitter app, dubbed twttr, the company is experimenting with removing like and retweet counts by default."

WaPo reports.

Meanwhile, "Facebook bans extremist leaders including Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos for being ‘dangerous’/The bans are a sign that the social network is more aggressively enforcing its hate speech policies under pressure from civil rights groups" (WaPo). That article has this interesting correction: "Louis Farrakhan is an extremist leader who has espoused anti-Semitic views. An earlier version of this story and headline incorrectly included him in a list of far-right leaders."

That correction had me spending some time reading Farrakhan's Wikipedia page — because I realized I couldn't really place him squarely on the right or the left. I learned some interesting things about him: 1. He's very old (85), 2. He's "speculated that his father.... may have been Jewish," 3. He was good enough as a child at playing the violin to win an award on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour (in 1946), 4. He's wife's name, originally, was Betsy Ross, 5. In the 50s, he was a professional  calypso singer  known as "The Charmer" and, later, "Calypso Gene," 6. After he joined the Nation of Islam, Elijah Muhammad required all members to "choose between music and the Nation of Islam," which he did, but only after doing one more music gig, at "a Jewish resort in the Catskills," 7. He originally supported Obama, but rejected him and called him "the first Jewish president" because of the  intervention in Libya ("We voted for our brother Barack, a beautiful human being with a sweet heart... Now he's an assassin"), 8. He embraces Dianetics and has said "All white people should flock to L. Ron Hubbard. You can still be a Christian; you just won't be a devil Christian. You can still be a Jew, but you won't be a satanic Jew," 9.  He said Hitler "wasn't great for me as a Black man but he was a great German and he rose Germany up from the ashes of her defeat by the united force of all of Europe and America after the First World War.... Now I'm not proud of Hitler's evil toward Jewish people, but that's a matter of record. He rose Germany up from nothing."

Buttigieg is kissing Farrakhan's ring and seeking his endorsement.

Just remember that when you see the propaganda being put out there about him by the media.

All the democrats presidential hopefuls are kissing his ass.

They are scum.

Given that Farrakhan is a prized endorsement for Democrat candidates, to say he is right-wing is absurd to the point of parody. Again, I do not know why we agree to get our news from morons. And note that this claim was on multiple news sites, so either they are colluding in their idiocy or they all suffer from the same peculiar stupidity.

I teased a black orthopedist friend, telling him that Farrakhan is right about white people. We are "Ice People" because white skin evolved as humans moved out of Africa and encountered seasons and needed clothing to keep warm. White skin evolved to avoid vitamin D deficiency as less skin was exposed to the sun. That is out of "The 10,000 Year Explosion," on human evolution

He bought three copies of it , two for his daughters.

Yeah, I'm certainly not a fan of Farrakhan, I don't particularly follow Jones, but I kinda like Milo.

Banning these 3 is worse, than allowing them to opine on issues, no matter how distasteful the opinions.

I don't think any of the 3 are dangerous.

If Facebook were to ban, say, Al Sharpton or Antifa, well, then the you know what would hit the fan.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

I don't like Alex Jones or Farrakhan - but I would never ban their speech.

When we start banning speech - we become worse than Alex Jones and Farrakhan.

Milo is provocative. He is critical of leftwing totalitarianism - which is why he must be silenced.

That's where we are headed. Left-wing totalitarianism.

God, would people please stop using Facebook. Why corral yourself in one place on the internet? Why give Zuckerprick so much power over you?

Crazy.

Regulate facebook. Its a monopoly.

Nanny Mommy speech police state. When does it end? Who is the decision maker? Soros?
Soros? That dork who runs facebook? Corrupt democratics? The corrupt Democratic party press?

Wave hello to leftwing totalitarianism.

The problem with social media is at its core: it is designed to be addictive. How else are you going to get millions of people to spend half their day to produce content for you for free? Zuckerberg and Dorsey and all the other social media tycoons are nothing more than electronic drug dealers. These are not good people. The only reason they would ever do anything "good" is because they have no choice or they have their own nefarious reasons. Give these people the benefit of the doubt at your peril.

Democratics need facebook mega bucks and google mega-bucks. It's all one incestuous pile. When Warren claims to want to break them up - laugh. Never gonna happen.

What's your opinion on simultaneous evolution? Ie Canine Originas has spread out across pangea and evolved to adapt to it's surroundings along identical or nearly identical paths, independently separately and all about the same time.

I checked into the theory because, looking back at how Science has been perverted by PCBS, I am suspicious that the Out of Africa theory was just to throw minorities a bone, as they are still building with mud and straw.

The left has settled on "provocateur" for Milo. We're supposed to believe because he criticizes others with little regard for propriety this is hurtful and appropriately banned.

How is he different from Randa Jarrar?

https://nypost.com/2018/04/18/this-college-professor-is-happy-racist-barbara-bush-is-dead/

Or the thousands of students, faulty, and activists who make intentionally inflammatory insults about whichever identity group they oppose?

I'm pretty sure genetics indicates several waves of emigration out of Africa. First the Neanderthals and the Denisovans, then at least two waves of Homo Sapiens.

In what sense is Milo a "leader"? Censors gotta censor.

Removing likes and retweet stats from twitter? I'm sure that will improve their bottom line...not. About as well as removing porn from tumblr. Did any of these people go to business school?

Farrakhan has a good gig going. He’s made a lot of money from suckers, just like Billy Graham.

Billy Graham was the white guy the white politicians paid to look like Christians.

It’s sad to see white politicians suck up to Farrakhan and Al Sharpton. Pathetic really

Louis Farrakhan is an extremist leader who has espoused anti-Semitic views.

Well, yes. But he also happens to believe that white people are the result of an experiment by an evil scientist thousands of years ago on Crete, and were created to bedevil the black man. To say the Nation of Islam is anti-Semitic is to rationalize the depths of its utter weirdness by associating it with a prejudice that is one of the West's original sins. Voltaire was antisemitic. The Nation is just fucking weird.

I also really can't see what it is about Milo Y. that makes folks go apeshit over him. The Sins of Milo Y are one of the Left Wing urban legends, just like how racist & whatever-a-phobic Breitbart news is/was. Breitbart certainly isn't one of my favorites, but it isn't Stormfront, either.

I think Facebook just held a meeting to find some Democrat they could "ban" to add to Jones and Milo to make it look like they aren't just banning conservatives. I guarantee you that Farrakhan will be found on Facebook a month from now, but the other two won't be.

Louis Farrakhan is a nationalist and racist black person. Talking about him requires acknowledging the fact that black people can be nationalist and racist.
Since the Left's position is based on Orwellian language contortions and taboos, they won't allow a frank discussion of this issue (or of many others). This is why Farrakhan's name and discussing his opinions are taboo.

Facebook is playing with fire.

Jack just met with Trump to kiss his ass and assure him that conservatives aren't being targeted on his platform (a lie).

Zuckerberg should be moistening his lips up for a visit, too.

Prediction: If this canary in the coal mine isn't dealt with, expect many more conservatives to be booted from these platforms before the election.

Facebook and Twitter are Ma Bell now. And look what happened to her.

narciso said...

Except ma bell could be broken up geographically, with Facebook the various components would have to be disconnected.

Farrakhan right-wing? When the democrat candidates kiss his ring? His fluff up with Obama was for show.

He's a famous racist leftist. But the "error" of calling him right-wing is no error. The act if purging itself is designed to serve the purpose of slotting all miscreants into the conservative category to weaponize social media against people who would dare to disagree with things like open borders.

Just like leftist and democrat terrorists from the Oklahoma City bomber (registered democrat, truther flavor) and the New Zealand mosque killer (National Bolshevik follower of Alexander Dugin) are called right-wing.

The point is to discredit conservative ideas by attributing even leftist violence and leftist racism to conservatism. It's terrifying.

Anyone want to place any bets as to how long Farrakhan stays banned from FB?

My guess is that exactly two minutes after this news was made public the staff of the Congressional Black Caucus started rattling cages at FB corporate.

Milo Y. & Alex Jones won't be anywhere near so juiced in the halls of power.

Wait & see.

Sooooo.......Instagram will be moderating the comments. That sounds so familiar.

I see it exactly the same way, YoungHegelian. I predicted he would be back on FB within a month or two, but you are probably right- it won't take more than a day or two.

Here is the headline of the NYT's story: Facebook Bars Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan and Others From Its Services.

Then buries "others" about seven paras deep.

Specific examples of FB content violations? Nil. Nada. Zip. Given the ostensible reason for the banning, you'd think even a journalist would take a few minutes to track down some actual facts. Nope, guess not.

I occasionally watch Watson videos. He certainly has a caustic wit, and effectively skewers collectivist shibboleths.

That must be the New Hate Speech™. Anything anyone anywhere says that mocks the Progressive liturgy.

Leland said...

I think they wanted to silence Milo, but new if they just did him, it would raise homophobic questions. So they masked Milo's banning with Alex Jones and Farrakhan. Unfortunately, the media style guide tripped then up and suggested it was all a bias ban, which it was.

seriously. The left have played footsie with Farrakhan for years - even Obama, and how he's "right wing" Same with Alex Jones. no one on the left had an issues with the guy when he was a 9-11 conspiracy troofer.

I can barely stand surfing blogs (60 minutes a day, usually, and no offense intended) but Faceborg I considered to be, what the Rev Farrakhan might call "white man's tricknology," from the moment I heard of it. As Prof. McLuhan might have said: the medium controls the message.

Hitler, BTW, was born Austrian but received German citizenship (in the 1920s?)

Narr
Rightwing, leftwing, how utterly tiresome

The left calls something right wing once it’s time for them to be disassociated from it: Mussolini and fascism only after they broke with the commies, National Socialism (Nazis) after they broke their alliance with the USSR and invaded them, the Polish communist party when Lech Walensa was making headlines. But the media jumped the gun with Farrakhan: he’s still useful to much of the left, so they had to make a “correction” soon after.
