"This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines..."

Said Jussie Smollett's lawyer, quoted in "Jussie Smollett lawyer calls 16-count indictment 'vindictive'" (The Hill).

The most-up-voted comment over there is:
"This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines"

That's exactly what your client did. Now lay in that bed.

Remember Jermaine Massey, the black man who last December was "unfairly" kicked out of a Double Tree motel just for being black? He was interviewed on CNN by professional jourono Dawn Lemon, who didn't bother to interview the security guard and manager who were fired for that. This was just a precursor to Jazmine Barnes (remember her? Nobody else does), Gillette, Covington, and Social Jussie Warriors with their Nigerian collusion.

How about the black college lacrosse player that just got arrested in Maryland for faking the hate crimes on campus and doing the swastika graffiti himself?

So much hate they have to fake it.

Goes to show, real life is so much more interesting than fiction. People want to see Nazi Germany Redux because they think they know about that. but what they're getting is the opposite, or more like reverse Jim Crow, with blacks having to come up with fake hate crimes.

Similarly we have a reverse Watergate, with the deep state targeting a president instead of protecting him, the media trying hard to not find that out..who would have thought it would all be so interesting like this. Certainly not Hollywood. They're the last to know it seems.

How does "Never-Trump" figure into this?

I just counted the number of stories at the Trump-skeptic National Review Online. I counted 17 separate stories, all of them critical of the hoax.

Charlie Sykes, the founder of The Bulwark, did a column critical of the hoax himself.

Best of all, another writer for the Bulwark, Jim Swift, debunked some alt-right talk radio host's Twitter (naturally) claim that Kamala Harris was Jussie Smollett's aunt.

So thanks to "Never-Trump" Republicans, we may have avoided one of our putative (?!) representatives looking nearly as stoopid as Jussie on this wretched story.

Does anybody know who Kevin McCullough is? Has anybody heard his show in New York?

I think 16 indictments is overcharging. Apparently they have two police interviews and charged for each of the 8 false statements in each.

Beyond the shock value, I suspect that they won't want to take him to a black Chicago jury and are hoping to plea bargain to 2 charges, one for each interview. The issue would be whether the surviving charges are felonies and whether jail time is attached. I hope the answer to those questions is YES and YES.

btw;

Here in Michigan a former "transgender citizen of the year" is heading to a criminal trial in the Jackson County Circuit Court on charges that he set fire to his own home in an effort to stage a hoax "hate crime."

Arson investigators and police found gas station surveillance video showing the man filling a gas can the night before the fire, with gasoline later found on his clothing, and the cause-and-origin investigation of the fire showed gasoline as the accelerant.

The fire killed five pets in the home.

Detroit Free Press story.

It seems to be a strategy to ensure a guilty verdict.

Bundling them all together would be "all or nothing" and risks a complete loss by the prosecution whereas he likely will be convicted of *something* by splitting it up into multiple counts.

If Chuck’s not writing for The Bulwark, they missed a trick. It was pretty cool how they dishonestly took a picture of the Trumps at a memorial service and labeled it as a sign of an unhappy marriage.

This is the kind of radical honesty that America needs!

What a sad, sorry, excuse of a miserable human being Jussie Smollett turned out to be. Strange that the left agrees that Jussie deserves competent counsel, but not Harvey Weinstein. They’re both reprehensible denizens of Hollywood’s bottomless bog.

It’s not even about Jussie. It’s about a media that went all in to promote the attack hoax. And a bunch of Chicago police resources tied up investigating same while 20 or so Chicagoans were getting shot. Including a toddler.

Here’s the one from Maryland where the black lacrosse player staged his own hate crimes on campus.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6450101/amp/Black-college-lacrosse-player-arrested-racist-N-word-swastika-graffiti.html

This shit happens all the time. College has to hold training, and diversity and inclusion classes. POCs demand more black teachers and “safe spaces” (which is just segregation in reverse when you think about it). School gives them whatever they want to keep the peace. Then it’s found out to be a hoax or staged and we’re told “but that just makes it MORE important to talk about these things and do training and workshops.

Bunch of BS

Well then we have a problem with a lack of shared terminology. I associate "Never-Trump" with "Never Trump Republicans." And I'm not aware of a single Republican, Republican-favoring editorial board, Republican commenter, etc., who sided with Smollett, particularly as the hoax came to light.

You seem to be dividing the world into "Pro-Trump" versus "Never Trump" worlds. Which would mean that Jonah Goldberg, George Will and Bill Kristol are functionally indistinguishable from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. I expect a few sarcastic voices to say, "Well, yeah!" to my last line.

And in such a world, all meaning is lost. Indeed at that point the only meaningful distinction in the world is support for, or opposition to, Trump. And that is truly a world of cultism.

buwaya said...

The people missing from the news are all those that jumped on the Smollet hoax, notably K.Harris.

If a Republican (any Republican) had committed himself so to such a hoax he would still be getting blasted daily.

buwaya said...

It is such a world of course.
And it is also a waste of time to argue with Chuck, but whatever.

What you actually have is a world, not just the US, splitting into very similar camps, into a very similar set of cultural dynamics. It is disingenuous to say it is pro or anti Trump, as Trump is simply the local expression of a general and global phenomenon.

And within that global phenomenon you are on a very basis to lump Will and Kristol with Tlaib and Omar. They are all creatures watered by the same money-spigot, puppets dancing on the same strings.

Jussie Smollett COLLUDED with Kamala Harris?

Harris's law gives Federal jurisdiction to:

... “(2) OFFENSES INVOLVING ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED RELIGION, NATIONAL ORIGIN, GENDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, OR DISABILITY.— “(A) IN GENERAL.—If 2 or more persons, in any circumstance described in subparagraph (B), willfully cause bodily injury to any other person because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of any person— “(i) each shall be imprisoned not more than 10 years, fined in accordance with this title, or both, if bodily injury results from the offense ...

They aren't "gullible dupes". They all understood the value of the story and likewise the danger of not embracing it.

If Smollet hadnt screwed up so badly, had he done just a bit more planning, he would have had a story and a video that could not have been verified but likewise could not be solidly challenged. It would have been an ambiguous claim of great political utility.

R Kelly got acquitted. He used the occasion of one of his trials to hook up with an underaged fan who had shown up to express her support and love. Stories like that help to restore our faith in the American justice system.......I look upon this as an opportunity for Jussie to finally tell the story of the sorrows and hate that a gay, black man must endure in Trump's America. With a black jury all things are possible.

Likewise, there are still pundits and Twits out there who never walked back their condemnation of the Covington boys. That is something that has changed in America during my lifetime: The open acceptance of debunked lies.

When the cops said they had identified two suspects Smollett said they were the ones, and that he was ready to testify against them. So he was willing to go the limit on this, and to imprison innocent men. He was willing to whip up race hate and riots. He wasted police resources. He tried to poison public debate. The death penalty might be vindictive, but anything less, no.
