At the Rattatz Café...

rat 1

... go ahead and talk about whatever you like.

I hope you get a glimpse of the Super Worm Moon. It's too overcast for us here at Meadhouse, but we did get a good look at this morning's moonset, so that almost counts.

Please remember to use the Althouse Portal to Amazon when you're purchasing your various worldly goods. The portal link is always there in the sidebar.

Thanks to all who've gotten into the swing of the new comments policy, which puts everything through moderation and has worked really well from our end, cutting out trolls, thread hijacks, and the dreaded "back and forth."

If the new comments policy were in place years ago, I might have cajoled my way into adSs's home and wealth, showing him that his wealth and success and admiration from others was unacknowledged desperation to his insecurely cavalier mindsets, only leaving him wanting, indeed green ugly, and therefore left to swarthy commenting with regular ol' proles here at the Althouse blog.

He never would saw me coming.

And I would have been eaten alive.

God bless Althouse.

From The Lexicon: A cornucopia of wonderful words for the inquisitive word lover by William F. Buckley Jr.

candor (noun) Directness of expression.

It appears that Mayor Koch's ingratiating quality, an unquenchable thirst for candor, was what finally did him in.

canon (noun) A basic general principle or rule commonly accepted as true, valid, and fundamental.

The canon of academic freedom is very clear: no idea is to find corporate favor in educational institutions over another.

cant (adjective) The expression or repetition of conventional, trite, or unconsidered ideas or sentiments.

Boris old boy, although I am entirely committed to our cause, I find the repetition of the cant phrases of Communism altogether depressing.

for the record - if I, S.C., ever "hijacked" a thread - it was only on a cafe, I hope, and only because I had been told to "discuss what I want" ..... so if I really hijacked a thread it was because of a failure to communicate (not Lee Ermey but the actor from Cool Hand Luke said that, I got it wrong on some long ago cafe last November if I remember right, which I probably don't)

off topic if you have had a really bad few weeks (let us say, as a hypothetical: unexpected news of the death of a childhood friend, even more unexpected news that a lifelong friend is no longer really "happy" in his or her marriage, and from your own specific medical concerns, a blast of some awful allergy or virus that makes your nervous system feel, from day to day, like you are living not on Earth but on some planet where humans are not welcome, and on top of all that you have to prepare and deliver one of those tasks that we, when we are speaking generally, call one of "the corporal works of mercy" when we are talking about then in general - (the list includes, but is not limited to, instructing the ignorant, healing the sick, burying the dead, praying for the wellbeing of the poor, and giving alms and your time) - but when we have to do the specific very difficult and unpleasant task it is no longer a "general corporal work of mercy" but is some really really difficult thing to do, not because we are human and weak - it would be just as difficult if we were human and almost as powerful as an angel ---- but because we know that nobody will appreciate it.
Ever.
And you do not want to know how alone that can make someone feel (although most people - and almost all decent parents - feel that way sometimes).

Well, nobody will ever appreciate it in this world, like I said, except God and His angels, and God and his angels can't do it the way we do it, because for God or his angels it would be easy, and without the same difficult meaning, and so without the same level of love and concern.

It is no small thing to be a friend to a creature who never had a friend on this earth.

That's probably why I like Trump so much.

However, it does seem calmer around here now.

Back across the Atlantic, we had a cheap shellfish called 'co(c)que,' which translated to 'Dog Cockerel' in British English; don't think that they exist on my side of the Atlantic. It looked like a clam in a mini scallop shell, was relatively inexpensive, and made a good chowder.

I miss France sometimes, though I always knew that I couldn't live there permanently; too American. I love Boston, where I've lived the majority of my adult life, aside from overseas. Boston never felt like anything more than a rest stop to other places.

The Seattle situation is very sad and very common in most big cities. Homeless drug-addicted people are not born. They are made, and I believe they are made by a society that fails to expect and and respect individual responsibility. You create a wasted person like that by first creating a safety net in all things where making mistakes has as little consequence as possible, becuase we don't want to feel bad. That allows people to make mistakes for too long until they are too deep in errors to climb back out. If they were forced to avoid the mistakes early on they would never get to the point where there are no answers for them. That's where our selfish compassion carries them. It simply does not work to solve people's problems for them as a anonymous entity that demands nothing in return.

That is not the greatest neighborhood. Maybe some parts are OK.

For ten years or more I had 10 acres on Vashon Island to retire to. I finally sold the two 5 acre parcels. That is an ideal place or once was. There used to be a walk-on ferry from the north end that went right downtown so you could go to dinner and catch the ferry home,. The terminal had a parking lot. It was gone the last time I visited.

The car ferries are all that are left. The north end one goes to west Seattle which leaves you in traffic,.

When I still owned the property, there was a proposal to build a bridge, a bit like the one to Mercer Island,. There was a community public meeting at the high school. The vote on the bridge had 10,000 people at the meeting. The vote was 90% or more no.

On the other hand, I don't miss the cheap shots, inflammatory comments, pointless bickering, and name calling. There is no perfect solution. This format at least makes it worthwhile to read all the comments.

following on from my previous comment,

if you have had as bad a few weeks as I have had recently, I meant to say ....
and take this advice or leave it ----
watch a good Hollywood war movie, I know Hollywood is a place that, like Moab of old, is in many ways just a washout --- washpot, that is
but lots of the war movies are pretty good.
So if you feel sorry for yourself, watch The Sands of Iwo Jima or the miniseries The Pacific with that guy who also played the lead in 13 Hours - and maybe your life has been tough but hopefully not as tough as those guys who lived in hell on earth, many of them only to be killed in hell on earth, and lots of them to barely survive and have families or become professors or to be old-style discreet gay dudes on the West Coast but to always be haunted by what they saw and experienced - who knows? there were hundreds of thousands of them - and when you have watched The Sands of Iwo Jima or The Pacific of 13 Hours, or some similar movie from the Frozen Chosin or Johnson's ROE impeded imbroglio in Vietnam, or somewhere similar, say a prayer of blessing and appreciation for everyone of those guys who lived though hell-
maybe that will put your problems in perspective
well Hollywood is a cesspit sometimes but at least they did something I have never done they filmed appreciations, again and again, of the people who put their life on the line so you and me would have a chance to live in a peaceful country.
and if like me you knew lots of bad people who are now old and wishing they had been better when they were young, say a prayer for them, and instruct your guardian angel to go cheer them up, you won't regret it

The Seattle situation. I've heard that you can vape with THC and it's like going from beer to vodka, the buzz is so much stronger. And this kind of vaping is sweeping through the high schools. So, just as it was (sort of) established that a joint wasn't that addictive along comes the vape pen which will be addictive and the fad runs through the high schools and addicts kids before anyone realizes the danger. And then they move up to heroin and fentanyl as they get tolerant to THC. And so the Seattle situation suddenly explodes across the country in terms of homeless addicts everywhere. Only kids, not beat-up sixties people.

But not in Milwaukee where Old Man Winter sweeps the streets every year.

Then in 2016 Harry Reid rolled him like a bowling ball during the financial crisis and the degree of leadership he exhibited at that time was somewhat underwhelming. I voted for him anyway, on the grounds that a Chicago pol was apt to be as crooked as Brownian motion, and I was not proved wrong by subsequent events. Then he ran in 2016 on his strong opposition to Obamacare, only to vote to maintain the status quo as regards Obamacare. There was a brave man in the Hanoi Hilton; I have no idea where he went but the man who died in August of last year was not brave, not a leader, not worth a dime.

this is 2019, not 2021, and it would be difficult to guess from those million words, here in 2019, even for my most gifted friends, based only on what I have said online, which specific corporal act of mercy (you can read the list on lots of websites) is, because I have no choice but to perform it, out of friendship, making me miserable right now (as Dido said, through suffering I have learned to understand others - miserable in that sense).

God loves us all and has a special place in his heart for people who care, in their heart, for a creature who never had a friend in this world (that would not be me, I have had many friends - but I remember so many encounters with people and other creatures who felt abandoned) - you probably have many similar memories

Just try to get past it as many do. When you are safe onshore again someday ... time to think or change. Another suggestion: If a believer speaks to you. just ask them to pray - nothing else.

Suburban Seattlite here. I happened to catch the first showing on Saturday night while packing for a trip. I was astonished that a "mainstream" local channel would dare question the "Gods" of Seattle Socialism.

Returned from the trip and was astonished at my FB feed because conservative And Liberal friends were posting and sharing about it.

My husband and I grew up near the airport - that locale isn't' really the problem.

It is SEATTLE - with all of their leftist "compassion" that allows this rot to take over the city's sidewalks and parks. Amazon's hiring frenzy has brought in plenty of "college educated" know-nothings who voted in the numbskulls who run the city. Lots of LGBTQ virtue-signaling (let's paint rainbows on the sidewalks!), determination to make small occupancy vehicles a thing of the past ("Climate Change!), Trump is the Evil Cause of All That is Bad in Our City. They all feel really, really good about themselves.

To repeat - I was shocked that so many of my lib friends shared the links to the show.

Bravo KOMO-TV!

-was this trial a factor in the massacre or at least it's timing?
-did the massacre contribute to the harshness of the outcome?

If you're in the States you probably don't even know about this trial, but it's a big story today on the BBC tv shows, FWIW,

Stephen Cooper, if you want to see a *really* good war movie, don't go to Hollywood, go see Peter Jackson's magnificent "They Shall Not Grow Old." It's a brilliant restoration of actual WWI footage, with narration culled solely from oral histories from actual WWI British veteran. The Imperial War Museum gave Jackson 100 hours of film footage and 600 hours of audio from which he reconstructed the British soldiers experience of trench warfare, beginning with their eagerness to join the fight.

The authenticity is heartbreaking.

A new topic.

William Voegeli in the Winter issue of the Claremont Review of books cites Althouse in his essay, "Conservatism after Trump".

In discussing the erosion of the Democratic Party's commitment to the political rights of its opponents, Voegeli says,

'In short, a commitment to norms and rules protecting the rights of those not allied with the Democrats appears to be weakening steadily within the party, the continuation of a trend that predated Donald Trump’s political career. If conservatism must adapt to meet the changing threats to liberal democracy, then it has no choice but to be preoccupied with American liberalism’s menacing evolution. Waugh’s claim that liberals are gullible and feeble, complacently unaware of the threats to liberty, needs to be modified to account for the ways that liberalism has itself become such a threat.

'A 2018 New York Times article, for example, lamented that conservatives have “weaponized” the First Amendment, whose defense was once the raison d’etre of liberal activists in general, and the American Civil Liberties Union in particular. Though he used to have “the standard liberal view of civil liberties,” one law professor explained, he has now come to realize “that it’s a mistake to think of free speech as an effective means to accomplish a more just society.” The Occam’s Razor explanation for this shift is that free speech “was only ever a means to an end” for liberals, in the words of law professor and blogger Ann Althouse. “When they got their free speech, made their arguments, and failed to win over the American people, and when in fact the speech from their opponents seemed too successful, they switched to the repression of speech, because the end was never freedom.'

I don't remember this quote, but Voegeli was paying attention.

There once was a pair of rambunctious Senators who enjoyed making the "waitress sandwich". That was pretty outrageous.

Yang came out swinging with dick moves about circumcision.
More importantly, he suggested the electoral college arrangement is a good thing...based on his absolutely not a stereotype interest: MATH!
Get that guy security.

I've lived in the Seattle area since 1956. For years, people fleeing California have come here, and then voted in exactly what they fled. Small wonder Seattle is a cesspool.

"Highly-decorated" refers to number of major medals not the highest order medal. McCain (Silver Star, Bronze Star w/'V' device x3, DFC, Purple Heart) was notably more highly-decorated than Kerrey (Medal of Honor, Purple Heart). McCain's fruit salad makes Kerrey's look like a couple grapes.

Thanks for the reminder. Night was cold but very clear. Saw it very well.

Maybe this new world should have an old school sign suggesting: "moderation will resume at _:_ AM/PM"

But I did see three bald eagles along the road today.

I also miss the immediacy of some of the "back and forth" and Drago's fine art of ridicule.

There's no accounting for taste. I wished Kilfile worked on the comments page.

The cafe posts are a mix of obscurity, insanity, disconnectedness, randomness, drunkenness, palaver.. and sometimes, lucidity.

Ann Althouse said...

"Are you keeping track of how many comments you toss? We're expecting statistics weekly at least."

No, but you should understand that the main effect is that the kind of comments we're excluding with this method are basically not even being submitted now. So the number of lost comments is much larger than the number of comments we receive but don't publish. That's the main benefit of the policy.

I remember well the Time magazine coverage of the deadly fire on the aircraft carrier. Well Admiral Mccain and company cleaned that one up. Liberalism can be best described as a person's need to feel good about themselves. In practical definition, it is often enabling destructive behaviors. Legalizing pot will have/has had, a debilitating effect on society not yet fully realized. Vaping this pharmaceutical strength stuff is gonna leave a mark. Most of the "enlightened" smokers I know deny the existence of Gateway drugs. Jimi didn't drown in his own vomit because he was stupid!

narciso... Great post on Venezuela! As a teen my high school leftist teachers drilled us on how superior sanctions were, as a tool to compel behavior from governments. Several generations later we see that they're the root of evil as well. abandoning that "solution" drifting ever leftward toward accepting bad behavior as inevitable? Compare contrast w/spanking?

I was very skeptical of the moderation format, but I have to admit it performed as advertised and made the comments so much easier to follow without all the side distractions. Thanks

Yesterday morning's moon set was fabulous in McKinney, TX. Big and orange sitting low on the western horizon as I started my run. I'm in Magnolia, AR this morning and have not been out yet. Cute little college town. I'm working in El Dorado at 8:30 and that's an interesting place to stay, as well, but Magnolia is nicer so I stay in a hotel on the Square here when I come around...I walked out and looked and it's still pretty high, maybe at 140 degrees, in the western sky, clear and white.

Thanks. I had over-quoted during my one desultory search.

The Google page tried to steer me to Ben Spielberg, Jack Balkan, somebody at UBC in Canada, Reason magazine, and Prawfsblog ahead of Althouse even though I included "Althouse" as the first word in my search.

Google is evil. At least Althouse came up on the first page.

On a solemn note, the psycho shooter in New Zealand flashed the ‘white power’ symbol: is it a ‘white power’ symbol because the media made it such, or was it always a white power symbol? I’d never heard of it being so, but then it’s not something one really follows. I suspect the former - the psycho has been driven to commit acts based on what is portrayed in the media.

Along with the dreaded back and forth there goes the stimulating, invigorating back and forth

There's room for optimism, Steve. In my limited experience with the newly moderated blog, it appears that tangents are tolerated if they are, as you write, "stimulating [and] invigorating" and related/relevant to the topic Althouse introduces. I could sense her frustration at times when we got too far from where she started the conversation. Like you, I find many of those entertaining. The rote name-calling and denouncements, not so much.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Trump tweeted that this week, but the MSM and his chubby daughter claimed it wasn't true. Do we know who's right?

Kramer's testimony under oath to Congress contradicts the MSM and Chubby. Kramer should know, he's McCain's top aide, and he is the one who actually shopped it to media and handed off to FBI at McCain's direction. It was released last week by an R congresscritter.

So it was the credible threat of moderation that was effective, not the moderation itself. That suggests that as the crap creeps back in, if it is not "moderated" the whole thing will fall back into the pre-moderation state, never to be threatened by the cry of wolf again.

Have any Left Coast Althousians seen the KOMO special Seattle is Dying? Watched it with my husband the other day; it was amazing - not in a good way.

Yes. We've watched it. As bad as it looked in the piece? It's actually much, much worse.

Wild horses can't drag me up north to set a single foot inside the Seattle city limits. And downtown Olympia isn't much better.
