"I doubted Jussie Smollett. It breaks my heart that I might be right."

Writes Nana Efua Mumford, "the executive assistant to The [Washington] Post’s editorial board."

I can't understand why anyone would want to admit that they're happier to know that a racist, homophobic violent attack took place than that one person told a big lie.
I wanted to believe Smollett. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list. I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all because the consequences if he were lying were almost too awful to contemplate.
So it would be okay knowing that there was a horrible attack because you're so certain that so much more of the same out there?

She says "I need this story to be true," because otherwise people will be dubious of claims of "racist hate crimes or sexual violence" and more likely to buy into the notion that "there is a leftist conspiracy to cast Trump supporters as violent, murderous racists." Ironically, Mumford's column itself bolsters the belief that there's a big effort to misrepresent Trump supporters. She's saying she wants the hateful image of Trump supporters to stick. She was (and still is) hoping for Smollett's story to hold up. She's admitting she is an actively biased recipient of evidence.

In that light, it's interesting to read her crisp summary of how suspicious she was all along:
I tried telling myself that it is possible that two assailants were walking around downtown Chicago at 2 a.m. in January in 10-degree weather, waiting for a black victim. In addition to that, they were stalking around with a bottle of bleach and a rope. And ultimately, the prey they selected was an actor on a show that they must’ve been somewhat familiar with, because they were able to not only name the show but also know that he played a gay character. Never mind the fact that he was likely bundled up because again: Chicago, January, 10 degrees. Also, after he fought to get away, he left the rope around his neck until he got to the hospital....
There are over 2,000 comments on this column. The most-up-voted one, by a lot, is:
I'm black, and I and all my black friends doubted this story from the get-go.

A guy who has received death threats goes out alone at 2 a.m. in below-zero temperature because he got the midnight munchies? Nuh-uh. He'd go out with his security team, or send his security guys out to get it for him, or (most likely) have it delivered. This smelled like a hookup gone bad.

Smollett has done incalculable damage. God help the next victim of a real racist attack. Nobody is going to believe him because of this idiot.

The need for those on the left to continually manufacture hate crime hoaxes strongly suggests that "next victims of a real racist attack" are remarkably few.

So what Mumford is saying is that she is a racist bigot.

If you're going to tell a story as lame as Smollett's, you should probably go all the way and say Donald Trump personally poured the bleach and tied the noose.

No, there isn't.

I grew up south of Chicago and lived in Chicago. The great heroes of my youth in Chicago were Muddy Water and Ernie Banks.

Millions of blacks moved from the deep South to Chicago for good jobs in the factories and mills. What blacks found in Chicago was fantastic opportunity.

Black gang violence has been a plagued in Chicago since the great migration. Blacks are at fault for that.

Thank you for this, Professor. Until I read it I hadn’t considered the possibility of a “leftist conspiracy.” Nothing like being assured there isn’t one to make you realize that, probably, there really is.

This was a set up for hired actors to stage a "lynching" event. And this team of crisis actors just happened to know where to say that it happened at the only location without surveillance cameras in downtown Chicago. If you don't believe this was a co-ordinated false flag by the anti-Trump Deep State, then I have a Bridge in Brooklyn for sale cheap for you.

Race relations in Chicago have a long and complicated history, but most of the action in Streeterville at 2:00 am is conventioneers being mugged on the way back to their hotels.

This is one of the more curious of many curious applications of "Trump Derangement Syndrome."

If this was a planned and premeditated hoax, designed (apparently) to advance the narrative that Jussie Smollett is an important figure in gay/black victimhood, and got caught doing the hoax, is that "Trump Derangement Syndrome"?

Althouse clearly likes the concept of "Trump Derangement Syndrome," and likes (too much, it seems to me) her "Trump Derangement Syndrome" tag.

But if, say, it applies to Jussie Smollet and Jonah Goldberg or Charlies Sykes or Bill Kristol equally, it sort of ceases to have any meaning.

"Smollett has done incalculable damage. God help the next victim of a real racist attack. Nobody is going to believe him because of this idiot."

I would like to hear at least one of these lefty people lament the fact that "this idiot" falsely tried to smear the generic white male conservative as anti-gay, racist, ambushing reptiles wearing MAGA hats. There is a real set of victims involved in this incident, and it does not include Smollett or any other black or gay person. It's also too late to worry about the affect on people who may be the victims of such a crime in the future. As the comment with 2000 likes indicates, no one believes this type of racist or anti-gay hate crime actually occurs with a frequency that would make it worthy of spending two seconds worrying about.

Larry J said...

I can't understand why anyone would want to admit that they're happier to know that a racist, homophobic violent attack took place than that one person told a big lie.

She would've been happier had this hoax (like so many before it) were true because it would've reinforced her Narrative that Trump supporters are violent racist homophobes. Once again, we have a situation (like with the Duke lacrosse hoax) that "the Narrative is right but the facts are wrong."

This narrative business is probably the single largest reason why so much fake news gets printed. Instead of digging to find the facts about something that happened, too many modern journalists search for stories and facts (real or imagined) that support their narrative. They then complain about attacks on the press when their lies are exposed. If they actually did journalism (the old who, what, when, where, how, and why) instead of trying to change the world, they could be trusted. Instead, they're despised by a large percentage of the country as being nothing more than agenda-driven Democrat hacks.

Karen of Texas said...

People like Mumford would be happier if the attack were true because it provides more grist for the mill, a way to drive their agenda further down apostates' throats.

She, Smollett, race hustlers like Sharpton, and others like them do as much damage to race relations as any tiny gathering of white supremacists of the KKK marinated variety.

And the "...done incalculable damage. God help the next victim of a real racist attack. Nobody is going to believe him..." ship sailed some time ago. Thank the rapid Trump resistance and their continual braying at the moon for further insuring that that ship is but a speck on the horizon.

Shouting Thomas said...

Inflaming America's cultural tensions, resentments and hatreds for gain is the m.o. of the Democratic Party.

I don't buy the argument that it will make it harder for the real victims. Real victims have real stories that make sense (usually). Humans are endlessly able to judge individual accounts based on their merits.
BUT it is going to start hurting the argument that people who support Trump (or even just don't hate him) are racist. That the red MAGA had is a KKK hood. That men are bad. That's the story all these hoaxes are trying to tell, and the people who are eager to believe them need to start acknowledging their own bigotry.

It's not a matter of "wanting to admit". (That is, rather than preferring to discreetly keep one's rather contemptible real feelings to oneself.) It's a matter of people like the writer having passed the point where those who disagree with them stop being fellow citizens, and become the evil enemy that has to be defeated in a Manichean struggle.

What you're reading isn't a study in a person publicly playing out a little vignette about the conflict between honesty and discretion. (They're past all that. Way past reflecting on whether they're engaging in the demonization they're always accusing the enemy of.)

IOW, what's not to understand about the actions of not-terribly-bright, self-righteous zealots flailing around in their limited conceptual world? It's pretty straightforward stuff.

Not really. It’s the “Derangement Syndrome” part that I think requires greater care. Not just “mistaken,” or “wrong,” or “arguable,” or even small-d “deranged.” No; this has a medical term; a brand name; Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Again; I’d say that there might be times to use it appropriately. “Bush Derangement Syndrome” was a thing that I understood and endorsed as descriptive of some of the hate and attacks on 43.

This is not such a big thing today, but in the past I have been very dubious of some of Althouse’s applications of the tag. If she had only used it a very few times and this was one of them, I would have had nothing to say about it.

One of the nice things at the Althouse blog is that you can click on the Trump Derangement Syndrome tag and quickly (or not so quickly, since there are so many) see all the posts where she has applied it. And judge for yourself.

I so much preferred that she was lying. It was amazing to me, because it really drove home the idea of innocent until proven guilty being an easy thing. I preferred that, because it meant the bad thing didn't happen. Alas, in the case I was on, it did happen. There was a real violent attack.

Yet, the impression lives on, and so I rather take the approach of innocence until clear facts arrive that suggest guilt. I still not sure enough exists to prove hoax, and that's what the cops are saying. I certainly don't buy the roving mobs of MAGA supporters, because where are the other incidents?

Black women are TREMENDOUSLY homophobic to gay blacks. Dated a very nice black girl last decade and her reaction to gay black men was one of revulsion. Not white gays....black gays only.

There's an unspoken sexual market value (SMV) that exists subconsciously in most people's minds. Unfortunately for most black men and women, they exist - even in their own minds - at the bottom of this marketplace. For black women, gay black men occupy a position not too much above black transgenders. They really really hate them, MOST ESPECIALLY if they happen to the submissive.

I suspect this has something to do with the fact that quality black men within their own communities are in such tremendously short supply, they can't stand someone making a choice to hit for the other team.

Black on black homophobia is 10x what whites see. But then black on black hate in general is too.

This was an angry, bigoted attack against white men, as usual.

No matter how many blacks kill blacks, all that matters to the media is when a white man potentially fails to supplicate themselves to a black. The racist, hateful idea is that whites are supposed to always 100% no exceptions behave themselves better than the normal violent, obnoxious behavior expected from blacks by Godless Progs.

It is hard not to feel superior as a white person knowing real anti-Semites with real power in the U.S. House are of no concern to any media or hate groups like the SPLC because they are just lil Muslim girls, not a real threat to anyone or anything unlike the penniless, toothless, meth-addled white men are and must always be for the blood money and Satanic power to keep accumulating to the Proggies.

The trap is separating "people of color" from whites, knowing "people of color" move heaven an earth to immigrate to white majority countries instead of trying to remain among their peoples in shitholes. Once it is Japanese V. China, or Pakistan V. India, or Crips V. Bloods, or Gay V. Lesbian, or etc. they lose, so they frame everything as "people of color" V. White Men, although soon it will be White People, at which point not all the dumb pasty broads supporting ugly Progtards will remain so deadly aloof.

I think it goes beyond that. It's self-esteem branding for the Left. They have to give life to their illusionary Nazis so they can make a Righteous Stand.

1) it excuses the petty evils and corruption in their personal lives. "So maybe I DID make a pass at the babysitter, but stood up against Hate on Tuesday, so I can't be a total douche"

2) it absolves the shame of being a Democrat. "Smearing high school kids is permissible in our fight against resurgent fascists"

It's the reputation of all those media people, politicians, and celebrities who took up his cause with such alacrity and fervor..........I judge Smollett to have less culpability that Nathan Phillips. Smollett blamed some unknown white people. Phillips blamed a specific group of white people and a specific white person. He told demonstrable lies. When have you heard anyone in the media call him out on his lies?...............You'd think that somewhere along the way someone in the Catholic Church would notice that they were attracting some bad eggs to the clergy and would take steps to fix it. You would think that someone in the media would notice that their biases were erroneously shaping their coverage of many news stories and that they would take steps to fix it. You can sense that hopeful anticipation when those incidents unwind - "it could be a right winger"; "a registered Republican voter somewhere has the same name, must be the same person"; "he may not have any political leanings, but if he did, it would be right-wing Republican", etc. Then, as the facts emerge and nothing fits that narrative, you can feel the sense of disappointment.

There is always hope that the next incident will be attributable to a right wing ideologue, and then there will be dancing in the streets to celebrate. All the previous incidents, as they say, "sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet."

This is bad news for criminals and scammers, who no longer can assume that nobody can see them when they are up to no good. The Chicago police were not only able to pick out the two Nigerian men who allegedly helped Mr. Smollett with his caper, but also able to track them to the store where they bought the bleach and the rope. Keep that in mind if you decide that you want to join the no-goodniks.

The wife and I were very interested in the actions police took in tbeir investigation. We like murder mysteries (Hercule Poirot) and, as a mental exercise, have tried to concoct the perfect murder.

Two rules we have learned:

1) every attempt to clean up your footprints only creates more footprints. Driving to the next city to pick up your trash bags and shovels? Guess what, your car was caught by a red light camera.

2) if detectives ever turned their attention on you, it's over. Just a matter of time. They are smarter than you and more importantly, more experienced. That cute little gambit you think you're pulling off? They've already seen it three times this year. Your best move is to answer the questions best you can and then immediately pack your bags and flee the country.

From their point of view, it practically doesn't matter if the original story is false or not. Truth is completely inconsequential.
What counts is having the appropriate reaction, which is indicated in this piece: fierce joy if the attack is true, denial if the attack is fake.
You're not supposed to think or "respond" in some meaningful way, only to ask how high. It's not about truth, it's about expressing group loyalty. They want to short-circuit conscious thinking and turn the "appropriate" response into a reflex.
Otherwise you're a racist.
Smollett's report made them feel really righteous and good about themselves, now the fact that it's being cast into doubt is making them feel bad. Why won't anyone think of how they are feeling now? They still feel like the victims here and this is the only thing they are willing to talk about.

To Smollett and his supporters, this attack story points to some deeper truth.
Smollett must overheard some really hurtful remark years ago and has never been able to let it go. He is a deeply sensitive person and has been suffering enormously ever since.
Even though he keeps telling them all about it, they aren't sufficiently impressed. He is still amazed at how his pain seems invisible to others.
Thus, he had to stage this attack to help them understand how much he and others are hurting.
It's not even that he minds their hatred. Hatred he can live with; he feels it all around him. What he minds is indifference and neglect. What he minds is not being taken seriously.
Maybe now all these racist white people, who don't know what being "invisible" feels like, will realize how serious the problem is. This will show them! Now they'll have to pay attention to what he has been saying all along!

Ace: "If this report is correct, and cops found the magazine out of which the words of the 'threatening letter' had been cut, that's pretty much game over."

From CBS News in Chicago:

“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, upset after a racist letter sent to the show’s studio didn’t get a “bigger reaction,” is suspected of paying two men to attack him a week later, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the investigation.

“When the letter didn’t get enough attention, he concocted the staged attack,” a source told CBS 2 Investigator Brad Edwards. Other sources corroborated that information.

...Smollett received a letter containing a white powder Jan. 22. The letter was mailed to Chicago’s Cinespace Studios, where the show “Empire” is filmed. The letter prompted a HAZMAT response. CPD says the “white substance” was later determined to be aspirin.

Now there is speculation the white powder letter was also a staged hoax by Smollett.

"Smollett must overheard some really hurtful remark years ago and has never been able to let it go."

Nailed it. We've all heard of "composite" characters in biographies and "composite" sources in news articles.

Now we have composite hate crimes, recreations meant to embody all the previous hate crimes the victim experienced.

You know, because you live among them as I do, that 9 out of 10 of them think with their feelings, want to feel like they are the Good People and have no critical thinking skills, even the educated ones.

Sad but true, Pants. Sad but true.

I can't understand! I can't believe! It's so sad!

There is also speculation that Lake Michigan is cold and wet.

"I wanted to believe Smollett. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list."

Progs are out and proud about their confirmation bias.

"I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all because the consequences if he were lying were almost too awful to contemplate."

Yes, exposing another prog smear, endorsed by the MSMa nd Dem politicians, as utterly mendacious is "awful."

"So it would be okay knowing that there was a horrible attack because you're so certain that so much more of the same out there?"

So much more of the same--right, because day after day men in MAGA hats go around with ropes trying to attack gay actors.

"Ironically, Mumford's column itself bolsters the belief that there's a big effort to misrepresent Trump supporters. She's saying she wants the hateful image of Trump supporters to stick. She was (and still is) hoping for Smollett's story to hold up. She's admitting she is an actively biased recipient of evidence."

Well, yeah. She's a prog. Any progs who are not "actively biased" that way?

"Smollett has done incalculable damage."

To the prog cause, yes. And that's all they care about.

"God help the next victim of a real racist attack."

You mean, like, the disproportionate number of white people killed by blacks every year?

"Nobody is going to believe him because of this idiot."

As if fake crimes #1 through #346 might not have raised a bit of doubt.

Among the things taken from the Nigerian brothers apartment were magazines. I'm betting that they are the ones they cut the letters out of for the hoax. The fools didn't even throw the magazines away.

Agreed. This is performance art / street theater, it's his personal masterpiece. Like most good art, it's inspired by, but doesn't slavishly follow, personal experience.

On a different note, I don't think this is about Trump or Republicans. To people like Smollett, Republicans are subhuman lepers. In his world they don't really "exist", except as the living embodiment of racism.

It's about "moderate" Democrats of the wrong skin color. If Smollett and his backers don't stay vigilant, Democrats might be tempted, with a little push from their party grandees, to nominate some sort of consensus candidate in 2020. They might want to govern from the middle. Or they might nominate some classical Marxist like Bernie Sanders.

But these choices are now tainted by association. One can practically see them, in the mind's eye, wearing a MAGA hat. How can a black person ever vote for a white candidate again, after this racist Smollett attack?

By staging and publicizing these incidents they are keeping race front and center, as the main theme of the 2020 campaign. They are making the "moderates" and classical Marxists bow to their anti-racist totem.

I don't see how Democrats could ever rise again above the suspicion of not caring enough, unless they nominate Jussie Smollett as their 2020 candidate.

Well at least we now know why the attack came at 2am when it was zero degrees out. The "attackers" had to be bundled up so no one would notice they were uh...two black guys.

Camera had to pick up just enough to see the "assault" but not see too much.

Too bad the camera was "pointing the wrong way"

My guess is that Smollett was about to be written off the show, “Empire,” because he is not very smart. I read somewhere that Smollett was a child star. It’s Ok to be dumb if you are a child but maybe not so OK after you become an adult actor. Another related assumption is that it requires a certain base-line amount of intelligence to perform well as an adult actor on a popular dramatic series.

The over-the-top touches of MAGA hat-wearing rednecks in the middle of Detroit (in the wee hours of the morning), a noose (still around his neck when the police arrived), bleach (subconscious desire for white-ness?), etc., while red meat for the propaganda machine often euphemistically referred to as the “mainstream media,” were just a bit too perfect for more realistic viewers.

Over and above the false complaint to the Detroit police the phony letter apparently violated several federal statues. At this point the only question is how much time Smollett is going to serve.

I just don’t ever want the rich world of legitimate and important Trump criticism to be linked to the Jussie Smollet method of apparently calculated stunts.

What you mean to say:

"I am afraid you are mistaking me for someone who has an interest in fair treatment of Donald Trump. I'm not your guy. I am interested in smearing him, hurting him and prejudicing people against him."

Such a sad mind you have to think TDS doesn't apply to Smollett, who according to you was merely performing a "stunt".
Look at your own words before critiquing others.

Just like Jussie Smollett.

In fact, exactly like Jussie Smollett.

Where's T-Bone?

Where's obama's biography composite girlfriend?

And no, I don't care if mentioning either of these things makes lefties and LLR's weep uncontrollably.

They were going to do that anyway.

As MB points out above, this wasn't much of a hoax but as a piece of performance art it was a masterpiece. The very flimsiness of the hoax is revelatory of the surrounding prejudices. The only thing credible about the circumstances surrounding the crime against Smollett was the credulity of the media, celebrities, and newscasters who wanted so much to believe in it......If Smollett as an artist wished to present a tableaux vivant of race relations in America he couldn't have done better than this skillful parody of a race crime.........,Smollett is quite the fraud. He's a child of privilege, and the wiki bio doesn't document a life of struggle and oppression.. Even his gay status is in doubt. He was straight at one time and only recently came out as gay. According to wiki, he reserves the right to bond with women if the life force so directs him........The only thing real about him is his fraudulent nature. He'll be celebrated for that for a long time.

What's most fascinating is the trajectory of the smear by Jussie and his fan base, which, lets face it, included quite a few LLR's who immediately latched on and praised him.

When the first or second smear does not gain any traction, for obvious reasons (Lefty/LLR smears are usually quite dumb), the lefties/LLR's cannot help but to escalate.

For instance, if a visitor on a popular website is not getting movement with their day to day smears, they might just escalate it by, oh, I don't know, allude to something negative about a politicians child, or allude to a filthy lefty smear related to the republican's wife, or perhaps even attempt to paint every single Trump voter as some sort of modern version of the KKK or the John Birch society or some other lefty lunacy.

It's the natural trajectory of the lefty/LLR. But only every single time.

Since someone else has said it/published it, I can admit now that I absolutely believed that it was a "hookup gone bad" - and that the ensuing stuff came about because Smollett was urged to report to the police by the horrified person that he was attempting to delude. I thought the bleach was an attempt to explain away an attempt to remove some traces, and that the noose being worn was a transparent dodge to add credibility.

It has happened before - remember the Ivy League frosh who was supposedly raped in the shower by a bunch of guys? That was all about the boyfriend, it turned out.

I am quite amazed about what we are being told about the real story behind the Smollett claim. That IS bizarre. But the brothers have been released, and that wouldn't have happened unless they could make pretty credible claims.

And now, of course, we are all waiting for the next shoe to drop, and for the FBI to lay evidence that the letter was also a fake. If the letter turns out to have been a fake, then Smollett is in real trouble because such cases are tried by the Feds.
