Elizabeth Warren just gave a fantastic speech — announcing her candidacy.

I don't see how she could have done any better. Her delivery — the passion, inflection, energy, clarity — is as close to perfect as I can imagine from someone who's found her way into the position to run for the presidency.

I'm not saying I agree substantively. I'm talking about the sheer achievement in speech giving. And you may remember that my instant reaction to Trump's SOTU was, "That was damn near perfect. So upbeat, full of optimism."

I appreciate a great speech. And Elizabeth Warren just delivered the hell out of one. If you're not willing to concede that, then I think you can't distinguish form from substance.

Much of what she said was about the troubles of the middle class, and it sounded a lot like Trump. There were many times when I said out loud, "This is like Trump." And she got a crowd reaction that reminded me of Trump's. People cheered and chants got going.

Unlike so many candidates, she sounds as though she's really feeling what she is saying. In the very beginning there was a sobbing quality to her voice, but as she warmed up, it became excellent passion and energy. It was so different from Hillary, who could sound robotic or like some acting coach had taught her how to give the impression of human feeling. Warren seems to have a strong natural talent for speaking to a crowd, really coming alive in front of a crowd.

I'm thoroughly impressed.

Liz is the one, no question!
Didn't you see her interview the other day? OK picture this: She's in her own kitchen, haranging some gaga journo about the struggles of the single moms and blue collar smack addicts and the heartless swells stuffin' their pockets and all that, my eyelids are gettin' heavy, then all of sudden, Boom!
I'm like, "What?! OMG! Girl! What are you doing to me?" Liz had turned around, opened her fridge and got herself a friggin' cold one. No shit! A long neck! What Deplorable heart wouldn't melt at the sight of Liz cooling those luscious, lecturing lips, so overheated by her sad, rad rhet, slammin' the income inequality and the greed of Wall Street? Steam was hissing off that frosty brown bottle, I ain't lyin. That was some sexy stuff right there, mister.
She charmed me like a snake and I loved it! Obama tried the same thing, find a camera, drink a beer, but spiff as he is, Obama is no Liz Warren. Anyway, they teach 'em that beer move at Harvard, I bet. And it works! That's why it's called Harvard, 'cause they know what works and they don't give a shit how come, am I right? So yeah. I'm a Warren man, all the way, baby!

Lizzie’s style is a populist appeal to Trump’s Deplorables. She has a natural affinity to them that works by offering courageous leadership for their good. But once again Trump has occupied that territory for 2 years now.

Just read on EW's site that she's gonna fight to end corruption in DC. Just like she did in the senate? Duck your head Professor, Amy's tossing one at you for not tellin how much EW "fine"d the daycare. As for Obama's 8 years, Trump is demonstrating just how much lost progress voting for that guest lecturer cost America.

Robert,
On what side do you think the "corporate overlords" are?
And who do you think the "corporate overlords" are, anyway?

They aren't the same people as in 1980. Nor are the current ones, quite, on the same side as their predecessors, nor do they come from the same roots.

I swear, some people simply don't get it about economic and political realignments.

Yes, she has that Sally Strothers whine. Nails on a chalkboard to me. And her whole spiel is baloney, since she's one of the One-Percenters she rails against.

Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!

Daniel Flynn's article Elizabeth Warren Finished Before She Started includes the following passage:

Warren graduated from Rutgers Law School, not in the top 50 of U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings. After examining the CVs of faculty at Harvard Law a few years back, I discovered that more than half of its professors and assistant professors received their law degrees from — where else? — Harvard Law. Outside of specialists who obtained degrees outside of the field of law, every professor and assistant professor at the school graduated from a law school within the top ten. A mere five graduated from a law school in the bottom half of the top ten.

Harvard, which boasted of her as a minority faculty member, now insists that her pseudo-ethnicity played no role in her hiring.

Drago said...

Chuck, your clear discomfort at having to confront your record is duly noted.

I was trying to find out how many professors at HLS got their JD from somewhere but HLS or Yale and got nothing on google. I did a quick random sample of cvs and saw one who went to U Chi. Is Warren the only HLS prof to go to a state school? Or are 2 percent from state schools? Rutgers is not even a public ivy. Injun privilege is heap big. If she stays in the race this is going to come out to the embarrassment of many.

To say otherwise would make Harvard complicit in a fraud against real minority hire candidates. That simply cannot be.

Folksy stories about shitting kids?

Between her beer swilling and Beta's dental visits its gonna be a long season of the son of a mailman

Ann,

Senator Warren is a statist jerk, of the "You didn't build that" school.

Just because she gave a wonderful speech doesn't mean that she should be allowed ANYWHERE near the levers of power in this country.

It's bad enough that she's a Senator. She'd do incalculably greater damage as President.

My two cents' worth.

I think Sen. Warren gave a very impassioned speech. But, I think she has the same problem that I do. I'm very passionate about my work and my politics. Often, people interpret that passion as anger. It's frustrating, but I have to temper my passion so that people don't tune me out. I don't agree with a thing Sen. Warren says, but I think she'll have to temper her passion to persuade those outside the hard code leftist, liberal, Democrat base.

Just delivering an empowered speech from a piece of paper or teleprompter does not cut it.

If Warren were a Repub, the Texas Bar application would have been the flaming arrow that ended her political and college careers. The Media, RINO's, GOP establishment and the Harvard community would be calling for her to resign and slink off into a hole in the ground.

I'm Full of Soup said...

In fact the more I think about Warren, the more I am pissed off. The world went crazy just a few weeks ago when a video seemed to show some high school kids acting like jerks to an Indian. Now, it is proven that Warren capitalized on phony heritage claims and it's crickets? I can't believe there are not at least a handful of Harvard students protesting against Warren's cultural appropriation.

It is just more proof that Fen was correct [see below].

I agree because it is obvious every time a case like this comes up. It still pisses me off though.

If it was a Repub senator, the media would ask every Repub official in the country if they thought Warren should resign. Yet and predictably, they will not do that to even one Democrat. But I guess there is a chance one of the Dem prez wannabes like Gillibrand could use it to undermine Warren. But I Bet she won't.

I can understand how a clueless young person like Cortez could not know what she doesn't know, but the older Democrats falling in line are either corrupt or stupid. There are few things with more evidence of their danger and ineffectiveness than collectivist policies.

Forget helping, why should middle class need help? We are the best off in material terms any generation ever. I for one would be satisfied if the government would simply leave us alone and stop actively harming us -- fewer taxes, fewer regulations, fewer monopolies, more sticking to the actual text of the Constitution, no more bogus H-1B visas and no more winking at illegals... Yeah, I know, that's way too much to ask.

The question is not: did Liz Warren give a good speech. Ms. Althouse, in her Cruel Neutrality™, tends to be a bit more...forgiving, or perhaps credulous toward Pretty Boy 'Bobby' types and Lefty Female Academics who look like her.

The question is: can she REPEATEDLY give good speeches? Do her answers match the questions that the independents have? Is she offering CREDIBLE solutions to the national problems?

Does she provide substantially more 'Value Added' than Trump does to their interest levels, their personal lives and problems, and to their principles and the needs of the nation?

Just from an entertainment aspect, she is more 'cold wet flannel' than Trump is on the first point, and railing against billionaires doesn't put a single penny in my pocket.

And as we watch Venezuela self destruct, pushing Socialism Lite seems...um...unwise?

She still looks like the Librarian everyone hates. Maybe Althouse is 'evolved' enough to look past her frail, emaciated frame and see 'LEADER'. For the far greater masses of the unevolved, nope. She doesn't have the Magic, the Charisma, or the Quickness of Mind to impress anyone.

So for me the value added is far FAR less than Trump.
