"Dana Densmore, a founding member of the separatist group Cell 16, took issue with the idea that sex was a basic human need."

"In 1968 in a journal appropriately titled 'No More Fun and Games,' she wrote that 'guerrillas' had important things to do and couldn’t be sidetracked by sex, which was 'inconvenient, time-consuming, energy-draining and irrelevant.' Romantic love was a problem, too. Ti-Grace Atkinson, a radical feminist philosopher, positioned it as the enemy of independence and insecurity. 'What is love but need?' she wrote in 1968. 'What is love but fear?' Other early feminists weren’t against romance in a perfect world, but they reasoned that until conditions improved, heterosexual love was too tied to marriage and societal expectations of what it meant to be feminine. Shulamith Firestone, in her classic 1970 manifesto 'The Dialectic of Sex,' saw romance as 'a cultural tool of male power to keep women from knowing their conditions.'.... 'Why has all joy and excitement been concentrated, driven into one narrow, difficult-to-find alley of human experience?' Firestone wrote."

Writes Nona Willis Aronowitz in "Don’t Let Sex Distract You From the Revolution/Maybe the Second Wave celibates were on to something" (NYT). It's just by chance that crossed my bloggability line on the same day as the WaPo article "How Lady Gaga convinced me to give up dating — and finish my book" (link goes to my blog post) — other than that the newspapers might have been influenced by Valentine's Day.

Nona Willis Aronowitz, who is 34 years old, is the daughter of the radical feminist Ellen Willis, so take that into account. It's interesting to hear a relatively young person make sense of what the older generation had to say, and I'm struck by the shortsightedness of what she has to say about her own generation:
Ultimately, the pro-sex feminists won out. In this moment of feminist resurgence, no one is suggesting we stop having sex....
Ultimately? There is no ultimately. Life goes on. And there is another generation after you. If you can see that "Maybe the Second Wave celibates were on to something," why are you confident that the war is over and the "pro-sex feminists" have won? Isn't the label "pro-sex" a little hollow and too proud of itself?

Lots of reasons why you can't have certain people in combat, but sexual relations are a Big no no.

This is ALSO why wives shouldn't be allowed in combat zones

Is there? Not for a great number of you. It will be some other peoples' generations.
Peoples die out, classes and castes die out, cultures die out.

People say "ultimately" when they mean "eventually." Sloppy, but common. Eventually, most people grow up. Ultimately, they all die.

"Don't let sex distract you from the revolution..."

Which one? 'Suffregism'? 1st wave? Pro-sex? 4th wave? 8th wave? The 'teledildonic' revolution? The coming of the cat lady empire? The post-sandwich and wolf-whistle utopia?

It's all so confusing. I keep forgetting which post-history womans' movement we're on right now. I really wish your moms wouldn't have been distracted by sex so that we didn't have to listen to this almost every week, and that you could happily spend time alone with other like minded women on your island free-bleeding to make the roux for that evenings lesbian wikken coven and cocktail hour.

I know lefties like to talk about how much smarter they are compared to the rest of us unwashed, ill-mannered and simple folk but then they go and write drivel like this weak-minded, groupthink sophistry that has no basis in the real world.

So, I guess, the take-away is that expressing idiocy with fancy words is superior to expressing reality with regular words.

They really do just write for each other.

This is why prosperous civilizations eventually fall. We've become so comfortable that we begin to think we aren't animals.

Sex is hardwired into us. We are social critters with a need to bond. We benefit from holding and touching each other. We feel safer in a group.l

Denying that we are animals is denying that nature exists. No good comes from that.

In the old days, into the 19th century, they were indeed permitted on campaign, under various rules in various armies.

The Mexican armies in their last great wars for instance -

Adelita - Amparo Ochoa

I am becoming a fan of Amparo Ochoa. The story of "Adelita", the song, its writer and its muse, is itself a bit of romantic semi-mythology. It would make a fine movie.

Althouse: "Life goes on. And there is another generation after you."

Why do you insist upon trying to reason with the insane?

You would have just as much success reasoning with a guard in Lenin's/Stalin's gulags, or with a Maoist Red Guard, or with a Castro henchnan, or a Pol Pot inspired guard standing on the edge of a half filled mass grave.

You just dont get what these people are all about.

"Next generation"? These people are celebrating infanticide, today, right in front of you.

They are openly bragging about their coup attempts using the power of the state.

They are no longer hiding any of their intent.

You can no longer pretend you dont see what is in front of you.

Matt said...

Its also fun to think of the left's 'next generation' given how their full-throated support and enthusiasm for infanticide and sexual practices that are biologically incapable of reproduction makes the prospect dubious.

I'm binge watching this TV show right now that is all about sex -- all sex all the time. Usually with people not their spouses.

OK, once in a while they will stop with the sex and go out and do some killing and spying or trying to catch spies. But then its back to the sex. Even when the spies are doing a scene where they are afraid of imminently being caught, their first impulse is to stick their hands down each others pants.

The show is called The Americans. It's OK, but would be better if they focused a bit more on the spying and counterespionage stuff. The sex is, frankly, boring and a distraction.

I dunno, maybe they were onto something.

Maybe women should refrain from sex until they are willing to be responsible for the reproductive decisions they make. The abortion crowd certainly doesn't.

There is a very great distance a society can get from "reality", before existence simply becomes impossible. That's the edge Venezuela is edging up on, and what Cambodia ran headlong past.

And they can get stuck on some unfortunate ledge, where improvement is impossible, as with Argentina. Whats waiting along the route of madness is not just some cataclysmic catharsis, but traps, prisons.

Why does all joy and fun have to be attending meetings about the revolution? or else about feminism?

How about a mixed joy and fun society? Sometimes to the beds, sometimes to the slopes, sometimes to the barricades? Sometimes to read, sometimes to play ball, sometimes to climb El Capitan barefoot. Sometimes it's spring, sometimes the polar vortex hovers above. Sometimes to learn about William Bradford, sometimes Equiano. Sometimes to watch a movie; sometimes to participate in a nationwide delusion; sometimes to awaken from delusion.

In order to have a successful revolution, you need the best efforts of men like Trotsky, Lenin, and Mao. I'm afraid the French, Russian, and Chinese revolutions would never have happened if women had taken such advice. Trotsky' wife discreetly left the premises when he had his afternoons with Frida. Lenin's wife actively encouraged the great man's affair with his mistress. It gave her more time to type up the great man's manuscripts. And, of course, Mao had a better sex life han Hugh Heffner. The women who read served these men also in a very real sense served the cause of the revolution.

One of the earliest and most persistent Cristian heresies is the belief that the world and the flesh are evil, and were created by an evil God. Jesus was a being of pure spirit sent to save us from the world of flesh created by the God of the Old Testament.
Since the flesh is evil, sex and procreation are acts of wickedness.
I don't know if many of today's leftists know that they are mimicking an ancient Christian heresy.

When one read's such gibberish as that promulgated by "Dana Densmore" you wonder how stupid educated people really are - its all for cosmetic consumption. For example, celibate Priests and Nuns - sure they never have sex? Of course none of the Cell 16 ever had sex before, during and after their idiotic self-flagellating movement! If you believe that then you're another sucker for buying the Brooklyn Bridge. One thing you know about human beings - don't believe what they say only believe what they do.

RE: blogposts today. It appears that a theme is living without sex, romance or a solid relationships. But isn't the theme really about creating or choosing to not build a family?

Some people want to live a monastic life. They might be more productive at times. That person may write more songs or books. But for many, that solitary life leaves out what many do not want to live without: family.

Less annoying, no question. Its a little place with small problems and the people do not hate each other. Their greatest living writer (or most popular anyway) is a conservative, certainly by modern American standards. Their universities are left but not SJW. As they have always been. They are split into jealous ethnic groups (as always) that provide a very substantial layer of "mediating institutions" that the US doesn't have anymore.

I really am tired of you, in any case. I want to be able to speak to any anonymous person on the street or in a bar or a social function, as Spaniards do, without worrying about how that may affect the careers of my children.

Cook: "Or men should refrain from sex until they're willing to wear prophylactics."

But men already do that. And when condoms fail, tbey are held responsible. They are expected to care for a child they didn't want. If they refuse, they are stigmatized by society as "deadbeat dads", they are jailed even if they don't have the means to support the child.

Men are responsible for tbe reproductive choices they make.

Women are not.

Women know that intercourse carries a risk of impregnation, yet tbey CHOOSE to accept that risk.

Women also know that birth control is not 100% effective, yet they CHOOSE to take that risk too.

And when women CHOOSE to gamble the odds and lose, they whine about being denied the freedom to CHOOSE. Except now another life is on the table.

Worse, to compound the hypocrisy, women whine about being denied the right to choose what to do with their bodies while simultaneously denying the right of someone else to choose what happens to theirs.

Women need to take responsibility for the reproductive choices they make, just iike men do.
