Sad to see Frank Robinson passed away. Great player who was overshadowed a bit by Aaron and Mays (who along with Bonds are the three greatest players ever).

Frank also had a fine career as a baseball manager and league executive.

Socialism is economics’ version of a perpetual motion machine. It has the same characteristics of a perpetual motion machine.

-It promises to get something for nothing
-Every once in a while some one comes up with a new machine and an explanation of how it would work and everyone gets excited about it.
-The people who propose it and get excited about it generally know the least about how machines work.
-Every machine that’s been tried failed to perform according to the new machine’s description.
-If you do the real math and engineering behind the new machine, you know it won’t work as described. But no one wants to do the detail work when that can bask in the glory of the concept for a new machine.
-In the end, the reason the machine may have seemed to work for a while was that it was stealing energy (wealth) from another source. In some cases. the source could not be replenished.
-The failures of all the previous designs do not deter the enthusiasm for the next design.
-Ironically, once you’ve gone to socialism, the famous epigram for the Laws of Thermodynamics – “You can’t win, you can’t break even, and you can’t leave the game” – seem to apply.

For ANN, and MEADE
that Joy may be sparked

A RAT'S TALE
(a delightful, dystopian pastiche in 2 parts)

Outside, the din grew ominous.
"It's the commenters again" Meade said, furtively glancing through a crack in the blinds "they want their Rats, Ann."
"They're mine, and they'll just have to wait" snapped the Professor.
"Meade-- I'm sorry-- I just can't keep this up! Day after Day another Rat, each one more exotic than the next-- it's like a second job! Dammit, Meade! I'm just a Law Professor, and retired-- not some sort of Rat Machine!"
"I know, I know-- we let it get out of hand" Meade said gravely."Look at them-- you can see it in their eyes-- the hunger...the desperation...but you just can't cut them off now, Ann, they'll..."
"Meade, I'm scared!" whispered the Professor.
"Me too, Honey" said Meade, offering her a consoling embrace.
"What are we going to do?" she asked anxiously.
Meade, momentarily at a loss for a solution, blurted "We can go North".
Ann, looking up at him, tenders the awkwardly posited movie reference and queries: "Bladerunner"?
Meade shrugs apologetically, sufficiently charming and disarming to temporarily placate the anxious Ann, and they pull each other close.

They waited til dawn.
The commenters have quieted down, but still quite a mischief outside.
Meade moved cautiously towards the SUV. Ann hesitates at the door, holding her sketchbook of Rats.
"Can I take it?" she asks.
Meade doesn't answer.
"It hasn't caused any trouble" she insisted.
"We'll put it in the trunk" said Meade, curtly.
As she approached the car, Ann glanced harshly at the sticker on the back.
She came to loathe that little face-- those beady eyes now seemingly twinkling with mischief, that smile now like the sinister smirk of a Catholic boy at a Pro-Life march. As her fingers fumbled at the adhesive to tear it off, a hand shot out to stop her, and she gasped in fear.
"Forget it, Ann," murmured Meade "We got the ones with the Premium Backing, remember?"
Rattled, they pull away slowly in the eerie pre-dawn light, past Brinkmeyers General Store, then on to the highway.
"It's free of commenters" claims Meade, and he floored it.

The little secret is that the office of governor in Virginia is weak. Certainly does not have as much power as some other states.

So the Dems have to ask themselves if it is worth it.

Fairfax should not resign. He’s got a clown Governor and a clown Attorney General to take some of the heat.

He’s also got the Washington Post who says they looked into his past last year and didn’t find anything.

The palms were swaying gently in the warm morning breeze near their favorite outdoor cafe. All the birds in the trees were singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching.
"At the Outdoor Cafe...You can vent all you want" read the sign above the awning.
They each quietly settled into their usual routine-- Ann perused the headlines while Meade worked the crossword puzzle.
With a puckish grin, Meade breaks the silence.
"Annie-- what's a 6-letter word for "to acquire"?"
With her trademark erudition, Ann reflexively begins to offer her suggestion when she quickly realizes it's Meade's teasing.
"You bastard!" she smirks "You know how much I hate that word."
Both smiling, there is a lengthy wordless pause.
Ann's mood shifts, and sensing the change, Meade looks into her eyes, scanning her thoughts.
Ann reaches out and takes his hand.
"Meade...for the first time, I finally feel we put that whole thing behind us--
I finally feel relieved-- at peace-- sort of a "Pax Rattus" if you will".
"Morticia! That's Latin!!" muses Meade, as he playfully caresses her forearm with Gomez-like elan.
"Stop it!" protested the Professor "This isn't a joke-- it was a really difficult time for me."
Meade wisely feigns contrition and discreetly lifts the paper as a sort of shield.
" *Obtain* !" he muttered in muted triumph. "Yeah, that will work".
Pretending to fill in the squares, he steals a glance above the fold to see if he got a rise out of her.
"She's chill" he assures himself, as they quietly resume their interests.
"Hey Strangers! Welcome to Boca!!" interrupted one of the locals-- a smokey-eyed rodent of a man in shorts, socks and sandals, with beady little eyes twinkling with mischief, and a sinister, smirky smile.
"This yer car? Could tell by the plates! Say! Cute little RAT STICKER you got there...where can I get me some of those?"

THE END?

Bonds was an amazing player. Anyone who understands baseball knows he was great before steroids and during.

Aaron and Mays, along with most players, took amphetamines when they played. That’s the game.

Mike Trout is a great player. His seven seasons track Bonds 89-98 seasons very closely.

Aaron and Mays understand how great Bonds was and Trout is. They also know A-Rod is a top 5 player of all time. This isn’t even debatable.

Baseball writers are no better than their colleagues who cover politics. They don’t understand shit.

Fairfax is having a bad day.

We serve as counsel for Meredith Watson, who was raped by Justin Fairfax in 2000, while they were both students at Duke University. Mr. Fairfax’s attack was premeditated and aggressive. The two were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship.

Ms. Watson shared her account of the rape with friends in a series of emails and Facebook messages that are now in our possession. Additionally, we have statements from former classmates corroborating that Ms. Watson immediately told friends that Mr. Fairfax had raped her.

Ms. Watson was upset to learn that Mr. Fairfax raped at least one other woman after he attacked her. The details of Ms. Watson’s attack are similar to those described by Dr. Vanessa Tyson.

At this time, Ms. Watson is reluctantly coming forward out of a strong sense of civic duty and her belief that those seeking or serving in public office should be of the highest character. She has no interest in becoming a media personality or reliving the trauma that has greatly affected her life. Similarly, she is not seeking any financial damages.
On behalf of our client, we have notified Justin Fairfax through his attorneys that Ms. Watson hopes he will resign from public office.

Earlier today, around one, in Jefferson county we passed six cars in the ditch and one SUV upside down in the ditch.

The snow had just started on that road. At most there was an inch. Presumably, the problem was that folks were not adjusting driving to the change in conditions.

Ambulance and cop were at the upside down car. And, all (except one) of the other folks said that they had reached out to others, and they were going to be picked up.

Anywho, that one exception was the closest I've ever come to picking up a hitcher. Turned out to be a sorta-weirdo, but I guess I'd do it again. Cause I guess we're supposed to do so. And maybe future stuck folks would be more normal.

rcocean and mccullough - good comments.

That being said, as for me, I think there is no such thing as a great baseball player.

Grown men playing a children's game for a living is not something we need to argue over.

Sure a few of them are obviously better at the children's game than others.

There are real men in the world. Aaron the whiner, Mays the casino greeter, or Bonds who took drugs to shrink his testicles in a bid to build up his phony biceps - not to mention Mantle who stole a kidney from a deserving non-famous patient, or the numerous draft-dodgers of the golden era of 60s and 70s baseball - not a single one of those famous baseball players was ever anything close to being a real man, in the most true sense of the word.

Either you get that or you don't. Look they may have been great family men, good guys, and wonderful teammates.

But they were not legends, they were guys whose main achievement in life was being better at playing a child's game than other people who also played a child's game.

Maybe they were men, but if they were it was not because of their ability to excel at a child's sport.

Bonds was the best player I ever saw play- he never struck out more than 100 times in any season other than his rookie year, he stole over 500 bases in his career, won 8 gold gloves, was the MVP 3 times before he started using steroids, had 8 seasons of more than 30 HRs before the steroids, and led the league in homers with 46 in 1993 before the drugs. Even without the steroids, he arguably might have broken Aaron's record anyway because he likely would have played 3-4 years more than he ended up playing when the scandal broke.

I do agree, though, that he should never be inducted into the Hall of Fame- there do have to be consequences if you are going to make PEDs illegitimate.

stephen cooper said...

narciso, of course you could say that, but look at it this way - Roosevelt was not very bright, Churchill was usually drunk, Tojo was Tojo, and the Dutch were what you would expect them to be. Sort of looks like, as bad as things were, they could have been even worse - lots of high IQ sociopaths in every warring society, thank God they did not have a few more years to louse things up.

Humperdink said...

If Bonds gets into the Hall of Fame, his pharmacist should be inducted also.

stephen cooper said...

Bonds has zero world series rings.

There are players with one world series ring, who have that ring only because they made sure that, at least once in their career, they were going to do everything they had to do to be on a team that won it all. Bonds is not one of those players.

To be clear ----- Bonds, who famously insulted the friends and families of his teammates, was not one of those guys.

But if Harold Baines is in the Hall of Fame, and if Mike Mussina is in the Hall of Fame, of course Bonds should be in the Hall of Fame.

But I am old and I do not care about the Hall of Fame anymore, I only care about who gets talked about with respect by his former teammates, or I only care about something similar with more relevance to the life I have lived,

So if someone wants to never vote Bonds into the Hall of Fame, I am fine with that, it is all childishness anyway,

stephen cooper said...

and if someone wants to vote in Bonds' pharmacist to the Hall of Fame, who am I to disagree, I mean, there have been dozens of players who played at Bonds' level, but only one pharmacist who did what the pharmacist of Bonds did .....

I agree with Bill James: at their peaks, Mickey Mantle was a better player than Willie Mays. I saw them both play. People forget how fast Mantle was when he was young. Mays had a longer career, Mickey got out of baseball early due to all his injuries, and baseball's infatuation with playing with the strikezone during the 60's that killed hitting between 1963 and 1969. Mays, Mantle and Aaron were the 3 icons of that era. It's no dishonor that Frank Robinson comes in 4th after those 3.

alanc709 said...

As to the Hall of Fame, it's been a joke for years. Too many Veteran committees voted in friends of theirs who were marginal Hall of Famers at best. Once you expend the margin like that, how do exclude guys like Harold Baines, who had nice careers, but were never even the best player on their own team, or even the team's MVP? As to Bobby Bonds, I'll agree he's a Hall of Famer right after they induct Joe Jackson.

Apparently Nadler didn't take it well when Whitaker told him that DoJ policy (implemented by a Dem President and AG) would likely prevent much of a report from the Mueller investigation. This is going to be interesting, since Schiff, and likely Nadler, know pretty much everything that Weissman, etc, know from the Mueller investigation. The problem is that they don't know it legally. It was illegally leaked to them. We know that from meetings between Weissman and Schiff, and that Schiff has let out stuff that he shouldn't have known. This is something akin to where the FBI found themselves in the summer of 2016, with McCabe's cabal knowing the contents of the Steele Dossier, but not having received it through proper channels, so unable to do anything with it. I think that we can expect Whitaker, and soon Barr, to be under the gun from both Nadler and Schiff for the rest of this Congress to get out in the public the stuff they know, but shouldn't. Meanwhile, expect that over in the Senate, the investigating committees are going to again request numerous documents be unredacted, and witnesses, like Bill Priestap, be reinterviewed, the minute that the Mueller investigation shuts down, since it, as an ongoing investigation, was the explicit justification for the DoJ, and esp the FBI, hiding so much of their bad deeds from Congress. No ongoing criminal investigation means no excuse to withhold the information from Congress. I think that the plan all along was to pass the illegally acquired information from the FBI to the Mueller team to Schiff and Nadler in the House, and that was probably a big part of why the Dems spent so much money and cheated so brazenly to retake the House, and get control over esp those two committees. But Whitaker seems to have thrown a big wrench into their operation yesterday, telling Nadler that he wasn't going to (legally) get that information. And, with their power moving from the Mueller investigation to the House committees, they weren't going to be able to keep the entire FISAgate Trump/Russia collusion fraud hidden any longer, esp since the Senate requesting the information is a coequal branch of Congress to the House. The next several weeks should be fascinating, with the vote on Barr apparently set next week in the full Senate.
