"President Trump plans to use remarks from the Diplomatic Reception Room on Saturday afternoon to propose a notable immigration compromise, according to sources familiar with the speech."

"The offer is expected to include Trump’s $5.7 billion demand for wall money in exchange for the BRIDGE Act — which would extend protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) — and also legislation to extend the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, according to a source with direct knowledge.... Advocates for the plan argue that by offering the new proposal, Trump is showing he’s willing to negotiate while Pelosi remains unmoved. But even some top Republicans are skeptical Trump's overture will be enough to break the logjam."

Says Axios.

Even if its not "enough to break the logjam," it's enough to allow him to say I offered a specific compromise and you didn't... unless and until they do make a specific counteroffer.

So will still be Trump's shutdown? To the Left it will also be so.

I predicted this in the comments here.

If the Dems don’t take it, then next thing is the $30b Gateway Tunnel into NYC.

Trump wins.

I'll bet it's 5.7 Billion to fly Pelosi and her family around the world and the "progressive free vacation" plan.

It makes it very likely that the Democrats will *not* compromise, because on the surface it looks like a concession. I expect Trump has gamed that out.

wendybar said...

They will say no. They don't want to negotiate with him, because they don't want to give him any credit for anything. They want to blame HIM for this long shutdown, while Nancy can't stay in DC long enough to do anything.

Darrell said...

Trump could have pulled Pelosi's plane once she was in Afghanistan.
Still they give him no credit.

DACA schmaca, will Trump take Nancy off the no-fly list?

“Democrats signaled they’ll reject an offer expected from President Donald Trump to extend protections for so-called Dreamers for three years in exchange for $5.7 billion in funds for border security as a way to reopen the federal government.” From Bloomberg.

Why? Dems want to punish DACA kids?

Darrell said...

The prior Congress passed a Bill that Trump would sign.
The shutdown is 100% Democrat owned.

I hope he SOTU’s from the Oval Office. This offer, China willing to purchase $1 trillion in US goods, would make an entertaining and contrasting speech.

He should offer Britain a BRAFTA deal as well during the speech.

If they say no, perhaps it will - in conjunction with the approaching caravan- give DJT the cover he needs with middle America to declare a national emergency?

After all, Pelosi can argue Trump forgot to put the cover sheet on his TPS Reports.

Well it is very difficult to find a compromise with someone who says "Not one PENNY for the wall".

I mean, that is kidnapper talk.

Bob Boyd said...

They keep telling us what Trump will say and do and they keep turning out to be wrong.

I am okay with him declaring a national emergency as long as he ALSO does NOT give up on the 5.7 billion. Pelosi and company cannot be allowed to hijack the country like this over a measly 5 billion and because they all of a sudden think a wall is "immoral". The stupidest thing I've every heard.

Pelosi is all politics, all the time. She must not be allowed to win this one. This is definitely a hill to die on.

Fox News needs to start a new counter:

Days of Government Shutdown.

Days Trump was in Washington

Days Pelosi was in Washington

Days Schumer was in Washington

It would actually be informative to the public, uncontroversial and telling in who is and is not working in bad faith.

Ergo you will never see it on CNN or MSNBC

FIDO said...

Nor will Inga mention it.

DACA is already in place I think. And I have no problem with it, if it can stem the border problem.

Unknown said...

Do you think Trump will have pictures, like Scott Adams proposed?

Anonymous said...

As long as the uniparty doesn't get everything it wants while giving nothing in return, then it's Trump's fault. The only acceptable compromise here is of the form "I will gladly give you border security and immigration enforcement tomorrow for DACA and amnesty today".

Trump is just so boorishly lacking in nuanced understanding of the precedent and traditions surrounding this issue.

Dems will demand permanent DACA not three-year extension. Trump might know this and be prepared to agree. Then Dems will demand something else, because they left themselves no room to negotiate on the wall.

jim said...

I doubt that such a proposal will be rejected.

If I were the Democrats I would add to it something else their "progressive" wing wants and something that smacks of "get tough on illegal aliens" without being nonsense. And negotiate from there.

Will the "Trump base" tolerate DACA-talk?

What do the ideologues, and you know who I mean, think of DACA and will they pull the rug from under fatso?

Oh, that's right. Limbaugh and Coulter are running the govt this week.

I thought it was Putin, but hey, with these lefties its hard to keep up.

It seems like only yesterday it was Hannity running the govt. The list of those who are actually running the govt (according to the lefties) is endless.

On the other hand, Inga boldly proclaimed (with zero caveats) that (in order) May, Merkel, Macron and the Boy President Trudeau were literally the "New Leaders of the Free World".

Those proclamations didn't age well for our resident Passionate Advocate for the anti-semitic bigoted destroy-Israel Chick's March.

Remember, Pelosi has gone Full LLR Chuck and promised not one dollar for an actual wall.

She was actually advocating for robotic dogs to patrol the border!! I guess she was thinking of German Shepherd robot dogs.....not a great visual, you know?

The far left will NOT let Pelosi compromise on this. Pelosi HAS to say no...which Trump fully understands.

So, as with the hilarious early Admin exchanges on immigration reform where Trump offered DOUBLE the number of DACA citizenships to the dems, which they refused, Trump is going to offer an eminently reasonable compromise which has little chance of being accepted (Trump win) or will be accepted and Trump gets border wall funding and forces Pelosi to backtrack (Trump win).

wendybar said...

Trump already offered way more DACA recipients protection in January 2018. Democrats rejected that...He offered 1.8 million, to their 800,000. I doubt if Nancy will stay in DC long enough to pass anything at this point. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/26/trump-daca-deal-is-a-dream-come-true-for-democrats-commentary.html

Earnest Prole: Trading DACA for a one-time half-assed border-protection funding bill?

Giving them legal status for another 3 years is better than a pathway to citizenship, which is what the Democrats want (and why they will reject this).

Gahrie said...

I'm willing to compromise on the Dreamers, specially if we get a wall/enforcement out of it. If they make it to 18 with no felonies give them permanent resident status and a path to citizenship. No family reunification rights though. We need to end chain migration almost as much as illegal immigration.

On Monday, 376 illegal immigrants crossed the border into rural Yuma County. They had burrowed under an old fence using entries created by drug smugglers. They all surrendered knowing they would soon be released.

On Wednesday, 250 illegals came over the New Mexico border.

A favorite MSM myth [or, rather deliberate misinformation]: 'Most drugs seized come across the ports of entry'. The key here is 'seized'. What about the vast majority of drugs that come across remote areas that are NOT seized. The media must think we are utter morons.

If nobody in Congress thinks this is a crisis, they should be forced to ride around with the Border Patrol for a few days.

And obviously not a Conservative. Perhaps concern trolling. Perhaps not.

Let me answer you with regard to at least me, and I think a good half of Trump's base:

After DECADES of mealy mouth assertions by Democrats and getting jack and schist from them, actually getting even half a wall for some kids is a no brainer.

When you are starving for justice for the citizens, even getting a little bit is enough to buy some undying loyalty.

"Immoral? Since when?"

A reasonable compromise and offer.

Of course, Pelosi and her Leftwing flunkies won't accept, because they affirmatively want open borders and no enforcement of existing immigration laws.

So, now, the Left owns the ShutDown. Long may it last!

What is original in the President’s proposal is not good. What is good in the proposal is not original. Democrats will vote next week to add additional border security funding for ports of entry, advanced technology for scanning vehicles for drugs & immigration judges.

Unfortunately, @realDonaldTrump keeps putting forward one-sided and ineffective remedies.

There’s only way out: open up the government, Mr. President, and then Democrats and Republicans can have a civil discussion and come up with bipartisan solutions.

There are probably more than a few who don't participate in polls. I, for one, would be happy to answer one or two simple questions but they demand demographic information that should have no bearing on the poll. My religious beliefs and income level are no business of pollsters.

The fresh-faced, lovable little tykes covered by DACA "made it to 18" two decades ago. The program age limit says it applies to those born on or after June 16, 1981.
