“Government has three primary functions. It should provide for military defense of the nation. It should enforce contracts between individuals. It should protect citizens from crimes against themselves or their property. When government-- in pursuit of good intentions tries to rearrange the economy, legislate morality, or help special interests, the cost comes in inefficiency, lack of motivation, and loss of freedom. Government should be a referee, not an active player.

It's been nice to be so buried in work this week that I've had no time to pay attention to the news. Plus, I'm on the road, so I'm missing a cold snap.

Is anything happening in the USA?

I was watchimg the Reggie Singh commentary where he talked about his brother (legal immigrant) killed in the line of duty by an illegal and the thought flashed through my head:

The entire wall debate - the whole thing - is about a voter and middle-class replacement strategy. The giving of something from people who have something to lose to people who have nothing to lose, in exchange for their political support. It is the only thing that explains an entire political class's refusal for something as simple as a wall..that they NEED to replace citizens and officer Singh with obedient foreign serfs to keep power.

I'm calling it. This is the line in the sand. This is civil war worthy. Government stays closed, permanently if necessary. Legally there is no point to citizenry, rights, laws or a country or borders otherwise.

My citizenship and officer singh's citizenship entitle us to some basic things that non-citizens are excluded from. Some are listed above. They're not even hard. And we have an entire political class that is flat out refusing to do them.

If needs be, war.

That photo (of the men hanging the painting) is better art than the painting. IMHO. It is a great photo.

I thought that it was from Picasso's blue period. Your tag confirms it. Is that "La Vie"?

Okay, Wiki says affirmative.

I see that Twitter users are astounded to discover that one 18 inch pizza gives you much more pizza than two 12 inch pizzas. Every math teacher in the United States needs to commit seppuku in shame and humiliation.

Wait until they find out that a five inch drain pipe carries 50% more sewage than a four inch drainpipe.

So, here's a question. If RBG resigns for health reasons in the next 5 days (by monday 14 JAN 2019). Which side gets the greater advantage?

Does Trump's base rally around him because of Kavanaugh and Gorsuch? Does this force some senators (ahem Romeny) to support Trump (and therefore the Wall) in a way they would not otherwise?

Does the knowledge of another Kavanaugh hearing rally the democrats to fight harder against the the Trump wall?

That painting used to be in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Not sure where this is taking place. But what a great photo!

From Picasso's blue period. Followed by his orange period and his purple period.

Andrew said...

Sorry, just realized the Instagram photo describes the location, including that it's on loan from Cleveland.

Picasso secretly spent his formative years in Cleveland. He liked the orchestra.

A guest on today's 1A gave a brief history of the walls along the southern border. He said that when there were literally open borders, Mexicans would come and go and not stay in the US, but come here to work seasonally. But then walls started being built and that was when you saw the absolute surge in undocumented people coming here. And staying. The walls were built mostly under Bill Clinton, a Democrat.

A lot of joyous people in Wisconsin tonight - 13 year old girl from Barron who was abducted after her parents murdered almost 3 months ago has been recovered alive. Was in a rural vacation area 2 counties away - came running up to a lady walking her dog. Cases like this usually do not have a happy outcome.

In case you have ever wondered if there are people who think Picasso is really good at painting and also think there were at least a hundred painters and probably more than a thousand painters (still less than one in a million, but nevertheless that is quite a large number of real artists we are talking about her) who lived at the same time as him who were better painters ....

Picasso was technically brilliant but he was to real painters what real actors are to real people. Essentially, what frozen food sold by the billionaires at Whole Foods is to the best real cooking in so many kitchens where so many people cook real food for people they love ......

He never once painted a portrait with love in his heart, but he knew,at a one in a million level, how to approximate it.
He never once created a beautiful pattern of lines, although he pastiched - at a one in a thousand level - the great painters who did know how to do that.
He never once painted a landscape immanent with divine beauty or painted eyes that were seen with eyes of love.

Other than that, he fully earned his place in the history of art.

I saw Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, the one with Marlon Brando. Marlon Brando makes a powerful Anthony. There's a touch of The Godfather in the way he manipulates the crowd in the "Friends, Ccountrymen, Romans" speech.......You're safe from political correctness in the older productions of Shakespeare. You're not so safe in the newer productions. They made Prospero a woman in a recent version. That's not so bad as a female Dr. Who, but it's offsides........In this production, they made sure that the mounted soldiers didn't have stirrups on their horses. That's historically accurate. Stirrups weren't invented to the sixth century. The thing is Shakespeare didn't know that. He speaks of spurs and stirrups. So is it more important to be respectful to the history of Roman times or to the time of Shakespeare?.....If I got caught in a time warp and was transposed back to the ancient world, I would be sore pressed to develop a ball point pen or an internal combustion engine, but I think I could develop a working saddle with stirrups.

@William,

You might enjoy L. Sprague de Camp's Lest Darkness Fall, one of the seminal "time Robinson Crusoe" stories. Modern (1940s) American gets lightning blasted back to Gothic Italy and has to decide how to survive and thrive (if Classical "medecine" doesn't kill him). As I recall, he picks introducing printing/paper, liquor distillation and double entry bookkeeping (with Arabic numbers) as things one man could introduce and make a profit from..

The economists AOC cites as the source for justifying a 70 precent rate- they are referring to a total tax burden while AOC wants it solely for income. It would represent a cut for some households if it was implemented as prescribed by the economists...

The RBG thing sounds like grade stirring the pot without any basis. Did you happen to see the political quote from the head of thoracic at Sinai who felt it was his obligation to allay the public’s fear she won’t return to the court? Stay in your lane doctor and simply report her condition and seek out a politicsectomy consult.

We shouldn't forget the entanglement of Gov. Newsom and Donald Trump, Jr., as personified by Kimberly Guilfoyle. I don't know where that could go, but it has potential.

As I wrote a couple days ago here, if AOC, wants to bring back the 50's style taxation, she needs to bring back the 10% minimum rate for the lowest of incomes -- those who currently free ride off the rich. This would have the advantage of forcing everyone to have "skin in the game" instead of the current situation, and would incentivize savings. But, I think we are beyond that level of fairness, and that's why AOC will fail before she even gets started.

Bill de Blasio blew off more than a few symbolic funerals and is still running around running up debt like crazy -- much like Gavin Newsom.

I think that “Beto O’Rourke’s” would be a great name for an Irish pub, The last time I was in Grand Cayman, there was an Irish pub there called “Fidel Murphy’s” I think. “Beto O’Rourke’s” would be along the same lines.

tim in vermont said...

I think that if the Dems ever get serious about single-payer, they are going to have to do it the way Canada does it, that is, to tax everybody. Just taxing “the rich” which would soon come to mean everybody with an income high enough to afford a home, won’t bring in the requisite lucre. It will have to be a regressive sales tax.

tim in vermont said...

One other thing. I heard an astonishing thing come out of Schumer’s mouth the other day. He used the phrase “legal immigrants.” I could have sworn that for the past. several years there has been a ban on making any distinction between legal and illegal immigrants.

I was a pressman on a 4 color web offset press. To hang a roll of paper (about 4 ft tall) on the back of the press, first you had to cut the wrapper off, then "slab off" any cuts to the paper so it wouldn't break while running through the press. We were told not to slab off too much because the outside 2 inches was 40% of the roll.

A politician can't make it to every funeral, but the disrespect he is showing for the problems of the non-urban Californians is revolting. The hinterlands of California should secede and claim their two Senators before they are completely disarmed.

Ana Navaro filing her nails on TV when a guest talks about a citizen being killed by an illegal is something else. What, didn't she have any floss?

A delivery of Lindt 90% chocolate bars came by Amazon's own delivery service and is the first such shipment without broken candy bars.

Apparently they haven't evolved into efficiently sweeping packages off the top shelf onto the floor yet, in the unloading process.

The chocolate bar prices often but not always are cheaper at Amazon than at Kroger.

In the summer they ship the bars packed in faux ice.
