And buy your stuff at Amazon through the Althouse Portal. If you need a recommendation, I'd say that about once a year you should order a giant pump bottle of Precipitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Skin Product - makes my skin feel amazing - with a slight healthy sheen - but it's not greasy. Not sure why this item is priced at $128 when you can buy it directly from Origins or in one of their stores for $60

Right now, $101.99 and $70, respectively.

Happy Jonestown Day, everyone!

(Ann, I'm surprised you didn't do a post on the anniversary. Perhaps it's too morbid.)

I grew up believing that Jim Jones was a Christian cult leader. But eventually I learned that Jones, while maintaining Christian trappings, was a left-wing idealogue. (I realize this is now common knowledge, but it was a surprise to me.) His rhetoric actually mocked the Bible and Christianity. He was a fan of Huey Newton and other radicals. His ties to the Democratic Party in San Francisco were deep and far-reaching. The Dems covered for him. (One more reason why Harvey Milk does not deserve his hero status.) Some Peoples Temple members were killed before the movement even went to Guyana, if I recall.

On this day, we remember the victims of socialist utopias everywhere, and renounce the works of those who believe that next time it will be different.

Raise a glass, but drink milk or something.

And poor Guyana. They need to have a spectacular event to diminish the one thing people remember about their country. Or they should just merge with a neighboring nation.

Today I fashioned four taper candle holder centerpieces out of birch logs and cooper tubing. We will decorate our Thanksgiving tables with them. I'm not usually anxious when working with wood, but flattening one side of an odd shaped log on my table saw made for digit risky business. I've got to get me jointer. Happy to report we have our four candle holders, and I still have 10 complete fingers. All's well that ends well.

The front part of the house (which you see there) was built in 1923, so it's almost a hundred years old.

The Speaker of the House was intended to be the Speaker for all of the House and should really be chosen by a bi-partisan vote.
The majority party would still have a party leader and whip to lead them in partisan matters.

Is it true that the Speaker actually is not required to be a member of the House at all?

Wouldn't it be lovely if the Speaker was selected for other than money-raising prowess?

Want some more evidence that Broward County is a democrat run dumpster fire? Caught this in USA today:

"In fact, had it not been for a poorly designed ballot in Broward County, the Senate race likely would have been even closer than it was.

In Broward, a Democratic stronghold, some 30,000 voters didn’t record a choice in the Senate, an unusually high number for such a high-profile race.

Nelson's recount hopes rested on discovering that those "undervotes" were the result of machine-counting errors. But both machine and manual recounts showed that in the vast majority of cases, voters simply left the race blank."

Hilarious.

OK, I read the Wikipedia article.

Nancy Pelosi goes far beyond her money-raising prowess. She is also reputed to be the best vote counter ever. But this is supposed to be what the party whip is for.
Previous noted Speakers have also been political leaders in their parties and of the country, but Pelosi does not seem to think that is part of the job. I am sure I have read at least one flat statement of hers to the effect that "the party leadership" sets policies and her duty is just to see they are carried out, and today's Democrat Party in the House certainly seems to be run that way.

I cannot think of any past Speaker - great or not so great - that would ever have said such a thing as: "We have to pass this bill so that we can find out what is in it!"

That statement shocked me to the core. I cannot believe that any previous Speaker would ever have consented to push a bill through the House without even having been told what was in it. Most would have insisted on their views being incorporated in any bill presented or forget it. But Pelosi's intellect appears not to rise to aspirations on that level.

Hagar,
It is fundraising and window dressing.
Her fundraising buys her loyalty.
That means she can count the indebted.

Pelosi is a mediocre legislator.
She has little vision beyond increasing Democrat control.

That is all she needs, these days.

If you want to see what communism looks like, just think about Inga's fat, stupid ass. We will have to support them forever.

I have a very good friend, a high school teacher, who lives in Wisconsin. She's hated Walker with the heat of a thousand suns since he was first elected. She said the exact same thing. She is a liberal Democrat with whom this conservative can actually have intelligent, interesting political discussions. Except where Walker is concerned.

Is it just me or is it sad that our politics have devolved to "payback's a bitch"?

Reading the earlier post on gender identity in children and clothing options led me on a meandering thought path to:

1. What is mental illness: does the term only refer to gun enthusiasts, rapists, and Donald Trump?
2. Can a woman be mentally ill?
3. Can a woman who is pro-choice be mentally ill?
4. Can we compile a list of (fictional) characters from popular culture who should be characterized as "mentally ill"?

Post-Seventies, the shorter list would be those who are not.

For females, Mary Tyler Moore functions as the bridge from quirky black-and-white neurotic to the full-color nascent cat ladies and emotional sharknados that came after.

Ah. That is why there were so many people wearing Raiders gear today at the Walmart a mile south of Cardinal stadium.

One of my partner’s grandsons was inconsolable after the Cards lost to the Denver Donkeys. High school freshman, so what can you expect? I wanted to tell him to get a life, esp outside of one of the worst teams in the NFL. Nope. Apparently I would confuse him - maybe into maybe graduating from high school, getting several college degrees, and maybe a good job. I am outvoted, and, indeed, don’t have a vote, since he isn’t my biological descendant, except at Christmas and birthdays.

WASHINGTON — Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Sunday harshly condemned Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over his alleged role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, calling him "unhinged" and pointedly refusing to work with the prince in the future.

But MBS need not be concerned. After spending the past two years as an oddly critical "pretend golfing buddy" of the president, perhaps believing he could influence policy, Lindsey Grahamnesty is now a full-fledged Trump defender. This change seems to track to John McCain's passing.

But . . . Senator Lindsey Graham, who has cultivated a friendly and frequently sycophantic relationship with the president, endorsed Trump’s right to fire Sessions, as long as he waits until after the midterm elections. “The president’s entitled to an attorney general he has faith in, somebody that’s qualified for the job, and I think there will come a time, sooner rather than later, where it will be time to have a new face and a fresh voice at the Department of Justice.”

FRitz: there was a movie called "Hysteria" based on the hypothesis that women's apparent mental problems were entirely based on the fact that they were not being sexually satisfied. I think this is the modern understanding of "mental illness" in women: they are not ill, and it is men's fault.
