The sex-ed teacher at Georgetown Prep had filled Mark Judge's "vocabulary with words like clitoris, orgasm, and ejaculation."

"What he hadn’t prepared me for was falling in love with a real person. To be sure, hormones were driving me to have sex with Donna. But it was also something more transcendent. As Saint Ambrose once put it, lovers embracing seem to be attempting to breathe their souls into each other. Again, rock ’n’ roll seemed to describe the powerful parallel world I was entering. Where my parents and their generation considered lovemaking a wonderful taboo not to be spoken of in detail, and [the sex-ed teacher] Mr. Ward reduced it to Marxism and moving parts, the songs I loved told me that it could be both—the swiveling hips of Elvis and the tender ballads of the Fab Four; the erotic dynamism of Little Richard and the moonlit romance of Van Morrison. To put it in theological terms, the music made the connection between agape, the love of God, and eros, physical desire. At night, from Joe’s room, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, the Allman Brothers, and the blues musicians he loved would serenade me with the wonder of love."

From "A Tremor of Bliss: Sex, Catholicism, and Rock 'n' Roll," by Mark Judge.

Mark Judge was the other boy in the room with Brett Kavanaugh and her, according to Christine Blasely Ford.

Actually, according to her marriage therapist’s notes, Ford said it was four boys who attacked in her late teens. These boys were described as “high profile” members of DC society

The story is now Kavanaugh with Judge egging him on. The two other boys were now in the other room. And now it happened when she was “15.”

Was Judge a “high profile member of DC Society” in 2012? Now? Ever?

Ford is from a long line of accusers who saw Goode Procter dancing with the devil. She saw it sometime in the summer in her late teens or when she was 15 at a house somewhere on Montgomery County Maryland.

Ford is a liar. Let’s hear from her husband.

"Maybe I should read his book instead of John Paul II's Man and Woman He Created Them, a Theology of the Body."

The next paragraph after what I quoted is about that very book!

"Yet the Church was catching up with the Top 40. In September 1979—my first week at Georgetown Prep—Pope John Paul II began a series of lectures that would be published as The Theology of the Body. John Paul II went back to Genesis to reveal the true meaning of love and the human body. The pope emphasized that man—meaning all human persons—was made in the image of God. Thus, when we are seeing another person, we are seeing the image of God. We become even more like God through the act of loving that person as an image of God, not as an object of lust. And we can only achieve mastery of ourselves and our sexuality by realizing that we ourselves are also created in the image of God. When we know this fully, we can come to realize genuine freedom."

This is really the key point. The mainstream media is treating the accuser as a kind of theoretical principle. She is not a human being whose place in this story demands reporting. She is something posited, a springboard to analysis, the unbroken convex of the media's empty vessel.

They would talk to the witnesses. A material witness is someone alleged to have information about a criminal proceeding -- in this case an accusation of assault. We have at least three alleged witnesses.

As I said, the results are likely to be completely inconclusive -- a report that details conflicting testimony, a lack of evidentiary support for any conclusion, and a gigantic ink blot for the cover illustration.

John Paul's best works were Veritatis Splendor (in which he explained why truth matters - because without truth there is no true and abiding love and without love there is no possible vision/version of Christianity and good friendship) and the encyclical he wrote on suffering, which was pretty good, considering he had Parkinson's when he wrote it, but he left out the worst part of personal suffering, which is that the more you suffer the greater the risk that you will have less time and energy to care about other people. And if you are one of those people who correctly think that the best thing in life is to show kindness to a creature that has experienced little kindness in its life, that is a big deal (it is no small thing to be a friend to a creature who never had a friend in this world, as we used to say in River City).

The "theology of the body" stuff was, by contrast, a vanity project. Others had written much better on the subject. I can save you the tuition costs of a good Catholic education at least in this respect - others had written much better on the subject, and you can learn so much from them, you can get a priceless education for free...
Dante, although he was a little too angry and sentimental, is a good start,
and even better, Paul the Apostle and
Christina Rossetti and
even better, Therese Martin and the Carmelite poets.

An hour or two a week for a year and you can pretty much read all of Dante, Paul, Christina Rossetti, Therese Martin, and the Carmelite poets. I would skip the "theology of the body" stuff, though, unless you have a historic interest in the lesser writings of recent Popes.

Of course, coming up with the story to emotionally manipulate your husband makes Ford unreliable. So does changing her story from what she told her therapist. So does going to the Washington Post and hiring a Dem operative as your attorney.

90% of the commenters on here are retired right-wing nasty trolls who drank the GOP & Rush Limberger Kool-Aid long ago. I pray that you all get what's coming to you. You'd put Charlie Manson in the White House, and Ted Bundy on the Supreme Court so long as he was a fascist lunatic like yourselves. In fact, that is what you did and are doing. Case in point is Clarence Thomas who has no place on the Supreme Court. You are all traitors, & thugs, i.e., Brownshirts. My suggestion to Prof. Althouse is to shut down the comments section, or make it a pay to comment site. These cheap bastards won't pay a nickel, so that would weed out the bulk of the nuts. It has nothing to do with free speech, but ending the hate speech that predominates. It adds NOTHING to her blog except for contaminating it. Inga endures nothing but insults. I say free yourself from the hate, and insanity, and cut the comments section loose.

Ann, is this a legal inquiry as the Democrats declare, or is this a matter for the Senate as the Republicans declare? My feeling is that is falls somewhere between, but there must be some law in regards to this?

This whole thing has the scent of Hollywood don't you think? Something like Hitchcock? No evidence of anything, allegations of how many years ago? What party were you at 36 years ago? A real tear jerker. By all means, investigate. Who has the movie rights?

Let's see if you'd pay $1 to leave your nasty comment. Trolls like you should be charged $2. You are pure pollution, and make my point for me.

Chris Cillizza of CNN tweeted 'No big deal. Just the president telling the FBI to ignore an allegation of sexual assault'.

Juanita Broderick responded: "I know the feeling."

Cillizza blocked her for this effrontery.

Which tells you all you need to know about the press wanting to dredge up 'old news'.

It's only news if it hurts Republicans.

Trumpit,

How much would we have to pay to have you blocked? That is worth a ten spot right there.

Gretchen Your logic is wanting. Assuming she is lying as you believe, why would she say there was a third person in the room at all? Instead of he said she said it becomes he said he said she said. How does that help her believability?

If you gave it two seconds of thought, it would be clear. Alas.

She doesn't have a year. She doesn't have a location. She doesn't have ANY other names. She doesn't know what she was wearing. She doesn't have a day. She doesn't have any idea how she got there or how she left.

So she doesn't have ANY credibility.

She has to say SOMETHING...so she spits out the least credible witness EVER to give ANY credibility to her accusation.

The ONLY detail we have at all about anything is Judge. That is a pretty thin reed to hang an accusation on...unless you are a Democrat wanting to hang a Republican

But hey, losing a lawsuit, losing a law license, having MULTIPLE women report MULTIPLE crimes to MULTIPLE people isn't enough evidence to support an accusation if your guy is a Clinton or an Ellison...and you are a Democrat.

Consistency...it's a thing.

Remember the little progressive who cried wolf? False positives destroy outcomes. The Professor cited a culture of professional mourners. We now have a culture of professional shriekers. Used to be "sex sells", now it's outrage sells. Clickbait for "journos"

As I read the selected paragraph, I was thinking, "This is the sort of pretentious drivel that bright kids are proud of writing when they're college sophomores but then think of as cringeworthy a couple of years later." I'm struggling to process the fact that Mark Judge, a professional journalist/author, wrote that when he was in his forties.

Mark Judge, Pj Symonds(?), and the third man all know the time and place.

The FBI, as I understand it, cannot, by their usual rules, open a criminal inquiry based on Ms. Ford's letter, but they could expand Judge Kavanaugh's background check, if requested to do so. That would be by more polite interviews not under oath, I presume.

The Senate committee has staffs for both the Republican and Democrat sides that can investigate whatever the members want according to their rules.

Writing quality aside, I'm not seeing why this excerpt is supposed to be troubling. As I read it, he's pushing back on the notion that sex is purely physical and arguing that it has a deep emotional resonance as well. How is that attitude predatory in any way?

Hagar said...

In fact, I would think that by this time, just about everybody that went to Kavanaugh's or Ms. Ford's school in those years have put their heads together and have figured out the ins and outs of her accusations.

JAORE said...

“Why didn’t you go kick the shit out of Kavanaugh for assaulting your wife when she first told you”?

You assume that someone who would marry Dr. Ford did not give up possession of his testicles as part of a pre-nup.

“Why didn’t you go kick the shit out of Kavanaugh for assaulting your wife when she first told you”?

Because at the time said it was FOUR guys she didn't know.

Anita Hill got a FBI investigation. She also tried to be anonymous, but the NOW crowd outed her. The circumstances where different, she was a gov employee alleging sexual harassment from a gov superior, not not private citizens 35 years ago in HS. It should be noted the FBI's report leaned in Thomas' favor.

The Kavanaugh accuser should be careful what she wishes for. Who do you think would have more trash dug up by the FBI, the accuser or Kavanaugh.

No No No. He's one of the funniest commenters here, if you enjoy self-parody.

Trumpit, "Case in point is Clarence Thomas who has no place on the Supreme Court."

Thomas was Alpha Sigma Nu at Holy Cross, a Yale Law graduate and a sitting DC Circuit judge at the time of his nomination to SCOTUS. Way better qualified than you. And he grew up in poverty in Pin Point, GA. And with no father. His grandfather was everything to him.

I've wondered the same thing. It's as though we're intent on driving every person who isn't driven by lust for power out of public life.
