I'm about to put up a series of Kavanaugh posts.

There are so many bloggable Kavanaugh headlines right now. I was going to collect them all in one post, but I want to react to them separately, so I'm going to string them out to avoid one long post. And this post is just a place-keeper to tell you that's what I'm about to do.

So when you see the first in the series, don't see it as a signal to dump everything you currently have to say about the ongoing Kavanausea.*

As these posts go up, please react to the specific post and, especially, please don't initiate discussion of another article that I haven't gotten to yet. If you're seeing an article you'd like to see in this forthcoming series of posts, you can drop the link to that on the comments on this warning post.

This is, I think, the first time in the 15-year history of this blog that I've ever done a post like this.

Trump knew his comment about his accomplishments would be attacked.

He is forcing people to reflect on this.

We were very close to the dystopian state 1984 describes. Everything that is described in the VDH article linked.

Trump is a singularly strange vehicle to bring destruction to the progressive machine.

Did the river of history produce Trump?

I know Ann has to cover this, but there's nothing actually there, which is the reality I cover:

This never-ending parade, of nonsense and misinformation, is how black people's lives are wasted while seeking justice to move forward.

Who will cover an *unimportant subject* like the reparations for blacks when this "drama" - which will end exactly as I've long predicted - is unfolding for the white majority? They want to play "pretend" right now, so who can stop them? Common sense has no place with them. Reality doesn't matter. Blacks definitely don't.

Whites are just wasting our lives until no one knows anyone existed to complain.

I assume Kavanaugh will be harassed by leftists for years after this. He will be on the Court but will be unable to take his wife out to dinner in a restaurant.

Maybe the Republicans will need to start private dining clubs like those in London.

So do not believe the monster when he tells you that he is monstrous because others treat him as monstrous. He is monstrous because he lets the task of becoming human wait upon how others treat him. Circumstances may have forced this upon him; he may have a chance to rebel; part of what he will rebel against will be his own monstrousness. For a hild, a correct waiting here is necessary, it is legitimate. It is part of the monster's monstrousness that he was never a child; he therefore has not lost what human grownups have lost.

I agree that a big part of the Kavanaugh subject is that it sucks up attention. The question of how that works and who is helped and who is hurt by this dynamic is something that I am trying to examine. That is, I don't see myself as someone who is being distracted and doesn't care about the things that aren't getting attention. I see myself of an observer of how attention-paying works. This is something what I'm paying attention to: the process of paying attention.

There are so many things that we do not see, and the not-seeing is part of how we get along. You might ask yourself what is it you are not seeing and, also, how could my effort to make people pay attention to what I want be more successful. I'd suggest that forefronting "reparations" is repelling. You can be mad about that, but I think it's true.

CStanley said...

I’m not sure if this is the best place to leave this comment but it is is relevant and if it also applies to later posts I may make the point again if time permits....

I am the same age as Kavanaugh and his classmates. I attended a prep school, though not an “elite” one in terms of money and privilege (it was a top ten ranked high school, and we were heavily recruited by the ivies but it was a public charter school in New Orleans so students were from all over the socioeconomic spectrum.)

The culture of that time for high school and college students definitely included a lot of alcohol. I was in many ways a straight arrow but did not consider it immoral to drink, even fairly heavily, as long as one could still be accountable for actions done while under the influence (I look back and think it was naive to think we had that ability to draw the line.)

But this makes me relate to Brett Kavanaugh. I don’t see his squeaky clean image being at odds with drinking at parties. I also know that even as a kid who feels comfortable being “square” (that wasn’t our term, I think we’d have said “nerdy”) there was still always pressure to fit in to social norms and to reiterate, that included going to keg parties. I can also imagine for guys, if they were virgins, it might have included making claims that weren’t true that would make other guys believe you weren’t a virgin.

I imagine that Brett Kavanaugh was viewed one way by kids who knew him well (the squeaky clean oersona) and another way by people who socialized with him only at parties. It doesn’t surprise me that the latter group might assume that he was more like them than he really was, and confronted now by claims of a different sort of character they see disparity.

There's a accusation from Michael Avenatti from a woman named Swisher, I think.
Anyhow this is accusation of a culture of gang rapes some of which were led by Kavanaugh and Judge.

Problems:
First, dropping this the day before the hearing. Obviously, delay till just before the vote, then utterly sensational accusation.

Problems with the story.
The story itself claims that the woman attended "many" parties where she saw guys lined up at a door. Then one day it happened to her. Why was she, by her account, going to parties like this?

Second
She is claiming that there were many house parties all across Montgomery County where Kavanaugh and Judge were preying on girls. This is a large county poorly served by bus and subway lines even now. At the time the subway didn't run to Gaithersburg which is quite a distance from Bethesda where Georgetown Prep is located and on a different bus line. The private schools were in their own sports league, different from the up county high schools. Most of these high school students didn't have their own cars, especially up county where they had to earn the money for them. None of them had cell phones, obviously, and no Facebook, again obviously. Gaithersburg and Bethesda had different country clubs. In short, there was no way for these two groups of kids to find out about each others' "private house parties." It would be illegal for most of them to drink and in those days many up county towns were dry. While I realize that none of that would stop a teen-age party it is impossible to believe that an unchecked culture of gang rape and drinking was going on between Bethesda and Gaithersburg teens.

Third The timing shows that the Dems have been building to sensational accusations just before the hearing and the vote. It The Big Lie and it makes me angry.

Someone needs to go to jail. Either Kavanaugh and his advisors if he lied under oath about this, or the accuser and her attorneys and enablers.
Kavanaugh has already denied this under oath I believe, with his broad denials and claims of celibacy.

This has solidified my feelings about the election. I generally like divided government, and see pluses in a democrat house. But no more. At this point I think that regardless of what comes out in the Ford matter, these other attacks show a level of recklessness and dishonesty that cannot be brooked. I cannot imagine voting for a democrat craft now even if Ford proves her case.

Chuck said...

There is a Kavanaugh-related story that I am honestly not seeing anywhere, even in the right-wing press. If anybody has a link to show me up on this, I'd actually be grateful.

But the story is this: Dr. Blasey Ford, by all accounts most particularly her own, really wanted to remain anonymous. But some people wouldn't let that go. So they leaked her story, and then dribbled out her name or some tipoff such that Buzzfeed had reporters knocking on her door at home and at work.

Who did that? We sort of know who did it; it was people working on or for the Democratic staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The same way they did it to Anita Hill, and baited her into testifying versus Justice Thomas.

There is no other plausible information. The information had gone to Sen. Feinstein. Feinstein is on the Committee. There is a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y no reason why any Republican would have leaked it; the only purpose and the only possible explanation was that it was Democrats with access to the letter, who wanted to block the Kavanaugh nomination.

The Democrats, in their zeal to discredit Kavanaugh, thought nothing of exposing Dr. Blasey Ford after Ford made it clear that she did not want to become public. The Democrats leaked it to the press, and press pestered and pressured her, until she finally relented. To the Democrats, the only imperative is to obstruct the Kavanaugh nomination by any means necessary. No victim (however genuine) matters in the least.

And as Michael Corleone said, "That's a terrific story. Now we have newspaper people on the payroll, don't we Tom? They just might like a story like that... It's not personal. It's strictly business."

As I say, I have not seen that story covered anywhere. Has anyone?

readering said...

It would have come out one way or the other. The real tragedy was the her congresswoman's office did not follow up asap before Kavanaugh was picked to let people in the position to make a decision know. There were plenty of articles indicating that other than the White House Counsel many top Republicans did not want Kavanaugh.

I have always been of the view that the next associate justice is going to be a conservative in the Alito/Gorsuch mold. Why go with a risky pick as McConnell tried to get across even without this info?
