"Yup – we were duped. Ya’ got me, Sacha. Feel better now?" — says Sarah Palin.

"I join a long list of American public personalities who have fallen victim to the evil, exploitive, sick ‘humor’ of the British ‘comedian’ Sacha Baron Cohen, enabled and sponsored by CBS/Showtime.... Out of respect for what I was led to believe would be a thoughtful discussion with someone who had served in uniform, I sat through a long ‘interview’ full of Hollywoodism’s disrespect and sarcasm – but finally had enough and literally, physically removed my mic and walked out, much to Cohen’s chagrin... The disrespect of our US military and middle-class Americans via Cohen’s foreign commentaries under the guise of interview questions was perverse.'"

Quoted at Deadline Hollywood.

By the way, the standard expression is "much to my chagrin." I think each individual is entitled to give his own report of his own chagrin. I'll wait to hear from Sacha Baron Cohen about whether he was chagrined. No I won't! He wasn't chagrined. Does Sarah Palin even know the meaning of the word? "Acute vexation, annoyance, or mortification, arising from disappointment, thwarting, or failure" (OED).

Palin is once again looking dumb. And here she is trying to defend herself in advance from some comedy clip that, I'll bet, makes her look dumb.

As for the quality of the humor and whether it's evil... I'll wait and see the show for myself. I'm impressed that Cohen is able to trick anyone anymore. His face is famous and his game is old. I've greatly enjoyed his interviews in the past, and when he goes after famous people, especially those who seek to exercise political power, I give him plenty of leeway. Puncture the pretentious. We need comedians to do that.

Cohen, Michelle Wolfe and the vile Kathy Griffin are non-persons we need to ignore. They are outrageous and controversial for money. Not funny too.

I watched Seinfield’s coffee and cars episode with Tracy Morgan. Morgan is third-rate; at best. Jerry pulls up to his house and it has to be worth $10m. Morgan is no John Belushi. Mediocrity pays. No talent pays. Ask Kanye and his wife.

People who've been duped will always pass the chagrin if they can. Doesn't make them look dumb, just angry. Cohen might have been surprised that she stomped off--how often does it happen to him?

Chagrin:

So, standard phrase notwithstanding, not that far off the mark and in fact, permissible.

Palin is exploiting disabled vets as a distraction instead of gracefully accepting that she was tricked.

She was tricked because he guessed that she's be patronizing to that type of person. He tricks other people by embodying other characters who are the kind of people that person will patronize, such as a foreigner (when he did Borat) or a person of color (when he was Ali G). That's part of what's so funny, that we can see the patronizing in this politician who lapses into cheap empathy theater.

Trump didn't fall for Ali G. Let's see some politicians who are so cheaply played.

Big difference between Cohen and O'Keefe. O'Keefe is usually exposing corruption in the government and doing the work the media refuses to do. As for Cohen, bad taste cringe comedy is his forte. Guys like Tom Green were doing it before him and (arguably) better. But that style of comedy far more often than not either falls flat and/or backfires and makes you feel sympathy for the victim thereby making the perpetrator look like a jerk. And the choice in target is key. Sarah Palin isn't super relevant these days so it just seems sort of sad, weird, and needlessly mean spirited too, both personally and politically. Remember that? Remember how horrified you were that other people didn't agree that they ought to have different beliefs due to empathy for hypothetical humans and you broke down and cried about it, in public?

But yeah, Palin is stupid for "patronizing" someone she believed to be a wounded US vet and allowing that deep empathy and sympathy she felt to lead her into getting tricked.

See, when stupid Republican bitches like Palin feel too much empathy it's a sign of idiocy and weakness and they should be mocked for complaining about having that used against them in service of a comedian's mockery. But when smart sophisticated law professors break down in tears while feeling too much empathy (or more precisely over a perceived lack of empathy on the part of others & their "rude" insistence on continuing to disagree) that's a sign of intelligence and something we all ought to admire.

I don't care one way or another, but it's pretty petty to criticize Palin's use of chagrin, suggesting a nitpicking pre-established perspective about her.

Clearly, she was using the phrase to indicate Cohen's response, whether it was real or not, which is a perfectly normal thing to do. We're always labeling other people's responses.

For instance, "Here she is looking dumb" is attaching your response to her behavior. You start by assuming Cohen is brilliant and Palin is dumb, then assess the interaction with these in mind.

Meanwhile, this is why Trump won: Elitist snobbery about normal people's trust and values.

You certainly can't do it, Achilles. This is more of your making-up-shit-about-Chuck.

I said absolutely nothing on this page about how I feel about Cohen's stunt with Palin; I haven't seen it. Has anyone seen it? This is all a fight about what some here call "battle space preparation," right? Palin is trying to pre-empt a national reaction when the segment is finally shown, right?

If you want to know my pre-viewing opinion, I think that against long odds, Palin might actually succeed in blunting this comedic attack. I think she may be making a smart play, to go on offense in this.

And Palin has made some good choices on this dimension in the past. When the Glenn Rice story came out, she more or less completely ignored it, and it seems to have died out. This time, she is choosing to fight that might work too.

Given similar circumstances I think Palin could do have been a law professor. She was a governor who accomplished much taking on the oil companies and getting a really solid deal for Alaskans before McCain put her in a bad situation with no support.

I think if Ann was put in the same situation as Palin she would get destroyed. Completely and utterly. Palin accomplished things Ann could never do.

When she passed the Bar she divorced him and claimed half his lifetime income. It went to the Supreme Court.

For his "60 minutes" interview, he was advised to have his own video recording and they did not like that at all.

Chuck said...You definitely misread the support for Palin among your most ardent Trump-loving readership.

I don't generally give a shit about Palin. I haven't considered her in quite a long time. I think she was treated unfairly by the Media and by the McCain campaign but she didn't do enough to defend herself and her selection as VP candidate didn't help McCain enough to prevent Obama. I don't much like her folksy populist style and I don't like that she took the "reality star" route after her political career was (probably unfairly) ended. I certainly don't "love" Trump.

None of that leads to the conclusion that Palin is wrong here, nor that the end of making Palin look foolish justifies the means of impersonating a wounded US veteran is OK.
"You're only objecting 'cause you love Palin so much" absolutely does not work in my case, Chuck.

The norm that we should automatically respect and feel deep empathy towards wounded US veterans is something I'd like to see upheld. Violating that norm just to "get" Palin, and then claiming that people who object to the violation of that norm are simply too unsophisticated, too stupid, or too ignorant of how comedy works to understand why it's no big deal makes me angry. My anger has almost nothing to do with sticking up for Palin due to an affection for Plain herself. Mischaracterizing my motivation doesn't address my point(s).

The idea that holding any norms up as important or sacred = PC is perhaps pushing it (since I doubt there's anyone who genuinely believes no norms are worth protecting), but I accept your judgement, sure.

"No sacred cows in comedy!" rings a bit hollow in an era where a wrong word about homosexuals, minorities, women, alleged sexual assault victims, transexuals, etc will end the career of most comedians, but sure: I think someone ought to face social pressure and opprobrium when they fake status as a wounded US veteran for purposes of tricking someone who cares about wounded veterans all in service of mocking a widely-disliked former politician.

Re: Blumenthal. I sided with him once. When he related his conversation with Gorsuch, where Blumenthal asked Gorsuch what Gorsuch thought about Trump's trasktalking federal judges, and Gorsuch said it was "demoralizing" and "disheartening." Trump heard about it when the media reported on it (Blumenthal made it all clear to the media), and Trump immediately tweeted that Blumenthal had "mischaracterized" Gorsuch. Blumenthal hadn't mischaracterized anything. And Blumenthal was later proven right beyond any doubt a couple of weeks later when Gorsuch testified on national television at his confirmation hearing and used the same two words.

Re: Durbin. I've written more negative things about Dick Durbin than anyone else in Congress. I wrote precisely one "not negative" thing about Dick Durbin. That is, when Durbin reported that Trump had used the phrase "shithole countries," I believed Durbin. Kelly's son was killed in Afghanistan. I assume both Kelly and Mattis have strong emotional connections with/reactions to wounded US vets, but Mattis is unmarried and as far as I know has no children.

My point was that since Professor Althouse is ok with Cohen violating the norm (of respect for wounded veterans) in this case she'd certainly be ok with the violation of that norm in the case of Kelly (an actual relevant political figure) and whatever emotions he may have regarding members of the military would equally be "fair game" for use to mock him. I mean, unless he's some kind of whiny baby, right?

Big Mike said...

True that! I don’t recall inviting them or their parents into this country and I have no responsibility for the parents or their kids. And I am pretty sure that if the parents agreed to empty bedpans for a lot less than your average unionized nurse (as they would) without joining the union (as they wouldn’t) you’d be slavering at the mouth trying to get the kids and their parents shipped back over the Rio Grande.

In fact that’s precisely what we should do with them — let them work off the cost of the care of their kids and their own incarceration emptying bedpans in hospitals.

Brian McKim and/or Traci Skene said...

"...especially those who seek to exercise political power..."

Is Palin still seeking to exercise political power?

If so, is there any real chance she will acquire any?

If not, is there any real satisfaction to be had or purpose to be fulfilled by duping her this way?

There may be. But going after someone who has already suffered a public beatdown (and who probably has no chance of acquiring any kind of power) is probably not all that valuable to society and probably not all that funny to anyone but the most crazed anti-Palin people. It's like going after Jimmy Carter, ferchrissakes. Would that be satisfying or useful? I don't think so.

It's kinda pathetic. Ten years is a long time to hold a comedy grudge. I am sure there are plenty of other right-of-center, power-hungry and pompous twits whose comeuppance would make for some satisfying comedy. But Palin and Cheney? Yeesh. It's been a decade. It's embarrassing. It's an old bit. It's like doing a bit (via standup, in a club, in 2018) based on a song that was a top ten hit in 2012. Yeah, I kinda remember the song, but I'm not all that passionate about it now and, golly, it's not like they re-released the song or nothing, so why are you talking about "Gangnam Style?" Sarah Palin in the American political equivalent of PSY. There's no chance he's making it to the top of the charts again, he was annoying, the song made my life hell, but I have no feelings about him or the song one way or the other.

Would a comedian expect praise for going after Jane Fonda in 2018?

This is shit that you at making up about me.

On Cohen and "puncture the pretentious"--not sure that Sarah Palin is someone whose pretensions need puncturing. Not sure she has any.

Ms Palin had the unpleasant experience of sitting home while her son was deployed in a combat zone. I do not believe that Ms. Althouse had that experience. I think that living through the travails of one’s children results in empathy for those with similar issues. Ergo, the Althouse soft spot for homosexuality and the Palin soft spot for veterans. I am interested who here had a child serve in the Army or Marine infantry billets in Iraq or Afghanistan? I did. My son went to both with the USMC. Especially interested in whether any of our lefty commenters saw their kid off to war.

Simple statements of fact always work best.

I have thanked Inga in the past because I am sure she inspired scores of Badger State residents to get out and vote for Walker.

Inga is one reason of many reasons a formerly blue state has turned red. Since Sen. Tammy Baldwin is up for reelection, I urge Inga to campaign for her. It sure would be nice to have 2 GOP Senators.

Oh please. Trump doesn’t give a shit about wounded Vets. Look what he said about John McCain. You are all dupes, you are all dumb, you are all Trumpists. Trumpists bashing other Trumpists, what could be more entertaining? LOL.

If Maxine Waters is mid 60's that would put Inga around 59.

I did. My daughter, an FMF Corpsman ( Corpsman to the USMC) served for an entire year at Camp Leatherneck from 2011 to 2012. She was there during had time in 2012 when the Taliban cut through the perimeter fence and attacked Camp Bastion/ Camp Leatherneck. She is currently attached to the Marines again and is waiting to see if she gets deployed once again this fall.

Chuck, the lawyer, cannot for the life of him reason out why everyone thinks he supports democrats.

A total mystery.

Why would anyone call him stupid?

Another mystery.

Mysterious.

Whatever.

The vast majority of vets know exactly what democrats think about them.

And we think democrats are enemies of freedom.

Democrats only like veterans who help them get more power over other people.

They shit on the rest of us.

The veteran community loves what Trump is doing. Trump will get 90+% of the veterans vote in 2020.

Just like Obama and Hillary got less than 10%.

Fuck democrats. #Walkaway.

Well, I would say that I have some familiarity with this particular syndrome and your question really doesn't make any sense.

Are you asking me if a child with Down Syndrome is spending time thinking outside their own existence and looking back at themselves and then pondering their general level of happiness?

To that I would say, we should not presume that is happening.

Wow. Louis C.K. certainly is deranged.

I'll admit I've found some of his stuff pretty funny over the years. Then when the weird sexual assault allegations came to light a while back I felt almost bad for liking some of his stuff. After reading those borderline obsessive Tweets about Sarah Pallin... yeesh.
