"Yup – we were duped. Ya’ got me, Sacha. Feel better now?" — says Sarah Palin.

"I join a long list of American public personalities who have fallen victim to the evil, exploitive, sick ‘humor’ of the British ‘comedian’ Sacha Baron Cohen, enabled and sponsored by CBS/Showtime.... Out of respect for what I was led to believe would be a thoughtful discussion with someone who had served in uniform, I sat through a long ‘interview’ full of Hollywoodism’s disrespect and sarcasm – but finally had enough and literally, physically removed my mic and walked out, much to Cohen’s chagrin... The disrespect of our US military and middle-class Americans via Cohen’s foreign commentaries under the guise of interview questions was perverse.'"

Quoted at Deadline Hollywood.

By the way, the standard expression is "much to my chagrin." I think each individual is entitled to give his own report of his own chagrin. I'll wait to hear from Sacha Baron Cohen about whether he was chagrined. No I won't! He wasn't chagrined. Does Sarah Palin even know the meaning of the word? "Acute vexation, annoyance, or mortification, arising from disappointment, thwarting, or failure" (OED).

Palin is once again looking dumb. And here she is trying to defend herself in advance from some comedy clip that, I'll bet, makes her look dumb.

As for the quality of the humor and whether it's evil... I'll wait and see the show for myself. I'm impressed that Cohen is able to trick anyone anymore. His face is famous and his game is old. I've greatly enjoyed his interviews in the past, and when he goes after famous people, especially those who seek to exercise political power, I give him plenty of leeway. Puncture the pretentious. We need comedians to do that.

Well, the reality of Trumpism that I see is a booming economy, underemployed workers getting good wages again, people unemployed for so long that they no longer counted in the official unemployment statistics but today they have jobs, ISIS down to its last gasp, North Korea at the negotiating table, etc., record high employment for blacks and Hispanics, and all this accomplished in the face of #Resistance. I can only imagine what Trump could accomplish without the scum trying to impede him.

It seems to have been a "long" interview, according to Palin. Having seen Cohen do these things in the past, I think we are going to find that the the gag was obvious within the first 2 minutes, but Palin didn't want to walk out in the calculation that would have made her look worse. When faced with this, there are three options for the public person- walk out immediately when you realize what you walked into (see the Ali G/Trump interview for a fine example of this), play along and try to turn the mocking around on the interviewer (few public officials are adept enough to do this, so you basically see no good examples of it), or play along as the straightman hoping to just last it out (sounds like what Palin tried to do unsuccessfully).

Thanks, Hoodlum. Appreciate the righteous anger, though strictly speaking none of the protagonists deserve it. But don't get your hopes up about AA conceding she might have been just a tiny bit off. With regard to self-regard, she ain't cruelly neutral.

Anyway, for those who skipped earlier comments:

"No no no, you uptight non-woke Republicans don't understand: this comedian was impersonating a wounded US veteran for the purpose of making fun of Sarah Palin! That dumb bitch has it coming and anyone who objects to the form of the stunt in this case must just be too rigidly puritanical.

You all need to think deeply about how the ends justify the means and since the means in this case is making Sarah Palin and her daughter look foolish, well, what WOUDLN'T be permissible, right?

Solid, solid take Professor. You totally nailed us.

Yeah, what a whiny stupid bitch Palin is! She only took her own time to fly across the nation to meet with a person she thought was a wounded US veteran (to discuss matters of care for veterans); no big deal. She has the audacity to then put up a post complaining about it?! What a ridiculous baby.

Keep those glowing hot takes coming, Professor. You're really nailing them today.

Patronizing? Honestly, lady: fuck you. Cohen here is weaponizing empathy for wounded veterans and you're saying "hey, he knew Palin was stupid enough to fall for the ol' "care deeply about wounded veterans" shtick and it's her fault she got played--it's evidence of how stupid she is and by complaining about it it's evidence that she's a whiny baby and a bad sport."

I guess there's nothing you consider off limits or too sacred to be fucked with for purposes of poking fun at a dumb Republican woman, huh? Wounded veterans are fair game for use as a tool to trick people, cool.

Hey, I know! Let's fake some hate crimes against gays or something and see if we can tick a weepy former law professor into giving an interview about that topic--it'll be goddamn hilarious."

Oh, come on Matthew. Don't be so obtuse.

Sacha Baron Cohen is picking on Sarah Palin for the same reason that this blog's commenters are still so fired up to defend her and claim that she was somehow forced out as Governor of Alaska. Same reason why a picture of Palin at the White House with Ted Nugent and Kid Rock would go viral. Same reason why candidate Trump would seek an endorsement from Palin and do a televised event with her. Same reason it would become news, for Sarah Palin to endorse Roy Moore in a primary against the Trump-endorsed Luther Strange (with it now being clear that much of TrumpWorld instinctively was with Palin/Moore).

Sarah Palin has that essential Trump quality; a raging desire to get confrontational with her culture war opponents. True, she's not running for anything anymore, but when was she ever running for anything, apart from her next TV appearance?

Corpsman wearing the Marine Corps Service Uniform in 2007.

As the Marines do not have medical personnel and chaplains, the Navy provides them.[36] The officers and enlisted include doctors, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, hospital corpsmen, chaplains, religious program specialists, and Naval Gunfire Liaison Officers. There are also specialized ratings that will be attached to Marine commands such as Navy Divers for example. Because of this relationship, these personnel are authorized to wear U.S. Marine Corps utility (desert/woodland) uniforms with Navy rank insignia replacing the Marine insignia for enlisted personnel (Navy and Marine officer rank insignia are identical) and with a "U.S. Navy" patch replacing the "U.S. Marines" one.

These members of the Fleet Marine Force include Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Medical Service, Hospital Corpsmen, Chaplains, Religious Programs Specialists, Lawyers, Legalmen, Naval Gunfire Liaison Officers, Divers, and Naval Academy midshipmen who are selected for Marine officership.

Most Marine units will have, at minimum, Navy medical and religious personnel, who will be issued and required to wear the MCCUU; wear of other Marine uniforms is optional. Medical battalions and dental battalions, being almost entirely Navy officers and Sailors, may direct other uniform wear. Other units, such as artillery, aviation, or legal units, may have other Navy personnel attached, and issued Marine uniforms.”

In fact, the Marine CO could require naval personnel to wear naval uniforms.

Too, too funny.

The good news is that for Naval enlisted personnel who are authorized to wear marine working uniforms (which are very cool), the uniforms are provided at no extra cost to the service member.

"If Cohen could dupe her, imagine her as President. It makes no sense."

Comedian John Melendez of "The Stuttering John" podcast posted audio on Thursday of his conversation with the president, where Melendez claimed to be New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez. During the call, the two apparently discussed immigration and the Supreme Court for several minutes as Trump flew back from a rally in North Dakota.

Next up for #StrongDemDefender Chuck: how to support the latest hot hot HOT lefty/dem/LLR take on Brett Kavanaugh's name!!

Apparently, it's a "frat boy" name!

Nice bunch of folks you've aligned yourself with there Chuckie.

What do you not get, about my saying plainly -- before he was nominated -- that Kavanaugh was my A-Number-One choice for that seat? What have you not gotten, about my repeatedly and consistently saying that the Federalist Society list is wonderful, and Trump's reputed final four was as great a group as we could ever hope for?

With all of that, why would you expect anybody here to believe you when suggest that I would in any way deride Judge Kavanaugh's nomination? Actually, I think I know why you might expect such a thing. Because you actually could expect that from the most ignorant of the Trump FanWorld, when anybody criticizes Trump.

LLR and "misser of points" Chuck: "What do you not get, about my saying plainly -- before he was nominated -- that Kavanaugh was my A-Number-One choice for that seat?"

You have aligned youself operationally with those who now insult Brett Kavanaugh due to his supposedly "frat boy" name.

If you have a problem with that I suggest you take it up with your allies on the left.

Post haste.

Would it help if I appealed to authority and quoted a bunch of recent tweets from avowed/dedicated NeverTrumpers who nonetheless object to Cohen's tactic of pretending to be a wounded vet? Would that convince Chuck or anyone else that some/many objections to this aren't just some reflexive pro-Trump/pro-Palin squawk? Or is it not worth bothering?

Totally not worth it.

Not everyone is aware of Chuck’s eagerness to sacrifice his integrity in the name of lying about Trump and Trump’s voters. So I say it’s worth it.

https://www.truthbrary.org/

A “fake website” was presumably also set up in connection to the series and one of Cohen's characters is featured in a draft-cut promo.

The site, rife with spelling errors, denotes on its homepage:

“REJECT THE MAINSTREME MEDIA + THE LIEbrary OF FALSE INFOMATION THEY TRY TO PUSH INTO THE PUBLICS MIND'S. THE TRUTHBRARY WILL SET YOU FREE. THIS IS A LIBERTY WEBSITE FOR TRUE AMERICA AND TRUTH LOVING AMERICANS.”

The site bills itself as “a collection of studies and investigations carried out by Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick for the good of the American people.”

“We must stand together to fight the dark forces of clintons and muslims and Godless peoples to stand strong for our religious freedom and hold forth for what is right in our country,” it continues. “Now is the time for the silent majority to come together ansd [sic] seek out our truth.”

The posts include “Obama is a kenyan,” “Germans now living under Shari’ah law,” “Signs that Hollywood is RUN by the SATANIC ELITE,” and the implication that “the military has been implanting mind controlled neural dust to remotely control their victims.”

Cohen apparently plays a multitude of characters, including “Dr. Billy” (as per the website) with Sanders. He plays a German homosexual with Sheriff Joe and an Israeli Mossad agent with Cheney and two other Georgia GOP-ers who were “being taught how to stop a shooter in the workplace.” In early clips at least, the comedian also went “undercover” at the Women’s March.

“The show is an exaggerated account of the perceived paranoia and all the hate the left thinks people on the right have towards so many groups,” claimed the viewer. “I think they threw Bernie in there just to have a cover so they can’t be accused of it being a total right-wing hit job.”

Yeah, there have been a few comments in this thread that got out of hand. People will probably regret getting angry like that.

On the other hand, your 11:22AM post is pretty much exactly how I feel, both about Palin and about Cohen's offensive stunt, and probably how most decent folk feel.

Where in all of this have I sided with Cohen? Where did I praise him or agree with him or anything else?

All that I said, was that I had the feeling that this was one time when a loud preemptive offensive might work for Palin, with conservative media helping to portray her as being somehow bullied or fooled under very bad/false pretenses by Cohen. Turning Sasha Baron Cohen into an abuser/exploiter of US veterans. It could work. It might work. It wouldn't surprise me.

Glenn Rice; now THAT surprised me.

What's to mock? That's what 4-year olds do. You clearly don't understand adult humor. Unless you're sexually attracted to something not adult and human, then there's not much humor there. But you're sexually attracted to cars, flags and churches, right?

So Ms Palin is contacted via a speakers bureau to participate in a “legit Showtime historical documentary” in her words. Does an interview with who she is told is a disabled vet, who is a heavily made up and wheelchair bound Cohen. She walks out during the interview, basically because Cohen is being an ass, her and her daughter are dropped off at an the airport they have no way to get a flight home from and our hostess can only comment on her use of the word chagrin. Inga and the rest of the trolls being idiots I understand, that's their job and I guess you have to pay the rent somehow but Althouse, she must really, really, really hate Palin.

There is no problem with disagreement. I would venture to say that I disagree openly with her here more than anybody. However you don't have to be uncivil while doing so. I'm glad there has been a walk back...no matter how foolish a person's position is, there is no reason to call someone a cunt.
