"This idea that somehow we are not sure where our own president stands is deeply disturbing, and the best way to deal with that is to vote in November."

Said Hillary Clinton, with mind-crushing blandness, at OZY Fest yesterday in Central Park, NYC, NPR reports.

What is OZY Fest? According to GQ, it's "the Sizzling Hot Festival for Folks Who Love Coachella and Neoliberalism":
This image was putting the free world on notice. A revolution was coming in the form of a two-day festival in Central Park called OZY Fest. Maybe you saw it and the subsequent and relentless owns and sick burns it spawned, gleefully doled out by people simply seeking to understand what the fuck they were looking at. Imagine a cut-rate Coachella lineup poster headlined by a few heavy-hitters of the outdoor all-ages summertime circuit, acts like Passion Pit, Young the Giant, Grouplove, Common, and record-scratch freeze-frame Hi, you’re probably wondering how I got here Hillary Clinton!... In short, the poster promised a weird hot Dada mess of Hillary’s Shadow Government throwing a party at the park. How could this not just be some extremely gentle ribbing perpetuated by one of those Weird Left Twitter rascals, having a go at #TheResistance libs and their not-so-secret desire to make any public event into a TED Talk entitled “Hey! I’m Being Civil Here!”

IN THE COMMENTS: BDNYC noticed, "Jemele Hill TWICE."

Nick Cave is all over the sountrack and everything he touches is authentic.

"You think Crooked Hillary would appear for only $10m?"

The problem that the Clintons were having is that with both of them out of politics, no one was willing to pay them big bucks to just show up and maybe give a short, canned, speech. Which, pretty much everyone with at least room temperature IQs knew, was just pretty naked influence buying. After her election loss, their value as speakers crashed, with little new influence to sell, and a lot oversold in the past (people buying advantage with the new Clinton Administration that never happened). Interestingly, their value as speakers seems to be recovering, which probably either means that she is running again, or letting people think that she is running again. Which is really the big question - is she really running, despite the likelihood that she gets crushed this time, combined with likely worse health, or are they asking noises about running just to drive up their value as speakers? I think that I remember their Clinton Foundation now taking "donations" again.

Maybe that was a long way of saying that the Clintons are probably smart enough to know that they may need to prime the pump, to get the money spigot really flowing again, so there is the possibility that she was working for less here, maybe even just to be named first on the posters.

Mary Beth said...

According to the website for the event, their goal was "Bridging the partisan divide. Whether your Twitter handle sports #resist or #MAGA, you’re welcome at OZY Fest." Then it goes on to talk about a bunch of Democrats and liberals. It does mention two people who were to represent the conservative side, Karl Rove and Grover Norquist. I wonder why Rove wasn't on the poster.

"I'm pretty sure he mostly stands in the White House. Unlike Hill. I'm sure where she stands: not in the WH. Thanks, Hill!"

You are presupposing that she is standing in the first place. I would frankly expect her to actually be either sitting or even lying down (or being otherwise in a recumbent state, since "lying down" implies agency, which may not cover falling down drunk) much of the time. Even a couple years ago, she was having problems standing up and walking. Remember all those times during the election campaign, when her handlers actually had to physically pick her up and throw her in her Scooby van? Seems to still be happening. The big thing a couple months ago was the speculation about the back brace, or some such, that she was wearing. That was, supposedly, maybe, why she was wearing those scarves and heavy clothes in the summer.

I couldn't find an explanation of the name on the website. Wikipedia tells me - it's an event run by OZY Magazine, a magazine started by former MSNBC news anchor Carlos Watson. The festival was sued by Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest over the name.

I still don't know what "OZY" is supposed to mean, although if you drop each letter down one, you get NYX, which I think would be a more fitting name.

More ooze than Oz. I've heard of Malcolm Gladwell and actually read some of his books. The others are obscure to unsavory. More people in London protested against Salman Rushdie than against President Trump. At the demonstrations they were actively calling for Salman's death. There would be quite a lot of Venn overlap between the two protest groups, although Rushdie was probably not in the former group.

Waddle maybe? And she does have those big burley assistants of some sort who are always there, right next to her, in case she crashes. So maybe think of it as her handlers hauling her around, and propping her up, whenever she is needed to speak.

Paco Wové said...

"former MSNBC news anchor Carlos Watson."

Wikip. also says that Watson managed the 1992 (Bill) Clinton campaign in Dade county, as well as some other state-level campaigns, and ran a short-lived website called The Stimulist in 2009. So, yet another politico-journalistic hermaphrodite.

Bruce Hayden said...

A bit OT, but somewhat relevant whenever Crooked Hillary is mentioned. Yesterday, a heavily redacted copy of one of the Carter Page FISA warrant applications dropped. Or, maybe, an attempt was made to bury it. And, yes, it is almost entirely based on the Steele Dossier, and was independently validated by at one Steele sourced news stories. The rest of the support for the FISA warrant appears to have come from other DNC and Clinton campaign sourced media reports. Interestingly, the investigation seems to have started in 3/16 by DNI Clapper (and not 7/16, as advertised). and, this "spy" (Carter Page) was working as an IBM informant up until that month (3/16). And the actual predicate seems to have come from the State Dept (except that the State Dept has repeatedly denied that they have any relevant correspondence or information). That would implicate the Misfyp/Downer/Halper crew. Andy McCarthy claims embarrassment, from having told everyone for months that the DoJ and FBI would never actually include the raw unverified Steele Dossier in a FISA application. But they did - he described the FISA application as just stapling the district court header to the Dossier

Bruce Hayden said...

Traditionally, I think that a lot of her dress was to cover up her cankles, which were, apparently, supposedly, a result of complications from her one full term pregnancy. That is supposedly where the pants suits came from. But she now, most likely, has some serious medical issues and those need to be covered up. I noted earlier the buzz about her wearing a back brace of some sort several months ago. The photos seem to show the outlines of such sticking up a bit behind her shoulders - and hence the scarves to hide the outline. No doubt, there are probably other health issues being covered up too. Incontinence and the line might get her out of her pants suits into tent dresses. Etc.

"Neoliberalism"? Is that a new thing, or the Same Old Statism? The only times I've seen the term "neoliberalism" in the past is when used by European socialists. Apparently in Europe the term "liberal" is still used in its original sense of meaning "pro-freedom." The socialists I read who used the term "neoliberal" were using it pejoratively, as in "wanting to return to the pro-freedom philosophy of John Locke and Adam Smith"--anathema to current State-shtuppers. Is this kind of neoliberalism they mean? Kind of doubt it.
