Given how easy Trump's making it look despite all the opposition it makes one wonder 1) How stupid are the fucking idiots we've been hiring for the job throughout history and 2) how much better a President Rona Barrett would have been than a President Jimmy Carter.

“Man arrested after shouting ‘womp, womp’ and pulling a gun on immigration protesters.”

During a prayer no less.

“It began around noon, as an Episcopal priest delivered a prayer to about 100 protesters gathered around the gazebo and a man marched back and forth in front of her, shouting “womp, womp!”

“Holy and ever-loving God . . .” said the priest, Kerry Holder-Joffrion.

“Womp, womp!” said the man.

“We pray for the children of this nation and all nations . . .”

“WOMP, WOMP!”

A Huntsville police spokesman said the man — identified as 34-year-old Shane Ryan Sealy — pushed one of the protesters, who pushed him back and knocked him to the ground, at which point Sealy allegedly produced the weapon.”

Quick quiz:

A man was arrested today for threatening to kill a sitting senator with an axe. The senator was:

A) Chuck Scheemer
B) Leaky Leahy
C) Dick Turben
D) Rand Paul

If you guessed D, you would be right!!!

Are Americans really that wild about soccer now? I'm not a sports guy in general (my sport, fencing, isn't exactly something you'd see on Wild World of Sports), although I do try to follow horseracing when it's on television. But for what seems like the past month the local Fox affliliate has been broadcasting some soccer championships almost (or so it seems) round the clock. Is there such soccer-mania abroad in the land to warrant cancelling all other programming to cover a soccer championship? Just wondering.

The man has been arrested. He allegedly called in the threats to Paul's Bowling Green office.

Paul mentioned the attack publicly at an event in Litchfield, Kentucky, on Monday.

"Capitol Police have issued an arrest warrant for a man who threatened to kill me and chop up my family with an axe," Paul said. "It's just horrendous that we have to deal with things like this.""

Back when Trump's candidacy was still a joke, I was taking the Chicago water taxi that runs along the Chicago River from the Ogilvie train station to Michigan Avenue. Sitting in the front of the boat with me was a dad and two young sons (8-10 yoa), visiting from Kentucky, and the dad's sister, who lives here. As we turned the bend in the river and Trump Tower came into view, the sister said to her nephews, "Look, boys, Trump Tower."

Both boys, in unison, began chanting "Donald Trump, Donald Trump . . . ." Like he was a sports hero or something.

I've often thought back to that day, and maybe I should have figured out right then that something was going on.

"Are Americans really that wild about soccer now?"

Quite a few are. My younger daughter played for over 12 years, was 2-time all state in high school, and for a while played in the Olympic Development Program. In many parts of the US it has very high participation rates. I was a youth soccer referee for 10 years, until I could no longer keep up with 16 year-old boys. and developed a real appreciation for the game. I had played a little intramural in college in the early 70s.

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world outside the US and is growing here because of youth participation and a growing number of immigrants who bring an appreciation with them. MLS is growing in the US, the new team in Atlanta has been breaking attendance records since it started last season. Most of their matches in the new Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta draw bigger crowds than the Braves and last Saturday they had 72,000 for a match with Orlando, which is far greater attendance than any match at the World Cup in Russia so far, I think.

Chevron got $38 million is damages from Ecuador and the law firm that ran the scam.

The Supreme Court of Gibraltar awarded the oil company Chevron $38 million Friday for damages related to charges alleging the company contaminated the Amazon region of Ecuador.

An Ecuador court issued an $18 billion judgement against Chevron in February 2011 for environmental and social harm the company allegedly caused to the Amazon. The amount was later reduced to $9.5 billion, but a U.S. district court in New York nullified the judgement due to fraudulent and illegal activities by Steven Donziger, the lead American lawyer behind the lawsuit, according to the district court ruling.

Donziger had set up a company in Gibraltar, Amazonia Recovery Ltd., through which to funnel the funds he and others thought they would win from the Chevron case. The Gibraltar court rendered judgment on Donziger’s associates and Amazonia while issuing a permanent injunction between them and the case, stopping them from participating any further.

No, Americans really aren't into soccer. It is the World Cup, which most Americans don't give a fart about, and there is a slightly higher percentage of Americans playing it as children, but still an insignificant number compared to football, baseball and other American past times, and it doesn't draw flies professionally here. But, as someone pointed out above, it is the sport of choice for 30+ million non-Americans living here illegally. And FOX in particular has in the last 10 years attempted to corner the American market, and has relentlessly promoted the FOX channel dedicated to that effort. They did the same thing with NASCAR, and I had the same reaction to that as to soccer. Is NASCAR really that popular?(No). Why is FOX pushing this niche "sport" of car racing? (Trying to corner the market for their own dedicated television channel). Both sports are equally boring and uninteresting to most Americans, but at least NASCAR drivers aren't throwing themselves on the ground and crying like overtired 5 year olds whenever someone brushes against them.

Among youth sports, attendance at weekend youth soccer games is the biggest family activity in America. Over the last 30 or so years, participation in organized baseball is down by a large percentage, while soccer has grown.

Anyone who doesn't think soccer is big at the youth and high school level in America doesn't get out much. In Atlanta, the Atlanta United soccer club is drawing almost as many people to each home game as the Atlanta Falcons NFL team does, in the same stadium. Arthur Blank, who owns the Falcons, also owns United, and the stadium was built to accommodate both. And the crowds are not just immigrants, I have lots of friends and family who go regularly. At my suburban home outside Atlanta we have 3 big soccer venues in parks near my house and on the weekends in the fall and spring they are packed with families all day on Saturday. And the same thing plays out in the suburbs of almost every major city in America. Even in my little town of 50,000 here in East TN where I also live we have a big soccer complex and high school soccer is a major sport (fall for girls, spring for boys). Back when my daughter played 15 years ago we drew just as many for a soccer match as softball and baseball, sometimes more if it was a big rivalry game.

Its rather humorous that the American bougoise is rejecting Football for safety reasons when it was adopted by them in the 1890-1910 time frame precisely because it was so dangerous.

MY grandson has decided he wants to play.
I think CTE is a product of class I college and the pros and is the size of players. A 400 pound player going at 40 second dash rate is a lot of foot pounds. When I was in college, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, the starting center for USC was about 190 pounds and won theOrder of the Palm for the highest GPA in the U.

He and Jon Arnett were All Americans.

Those days are long gone. Now we have 400 pounders who never graduate.

The great thing about soccer is that you don’t have to be freakishly large or freakishly tall to play it well/professionally. Indeed, being too big is a disadvantage. LeBron would be a lousy soccer player, though depending on his reaction time and instincts he might have a shot at playing goalie at some level (maybe semi-pro).

Roughcoat said...

My dad played football at Northwestern, on scholarship. His roommate and best friend was Otto Graham. Dad was a running back at 190 pounds which was considered big for a back. In fact he was as big as some of his linemen. Of course he and everyone else wore leather helmets with no face masks which meant that they didn't use their heads as weapons. Hence concussions were rare. Lot of broken noses, however, and my dad said that he and all his teammates had black eyes for the entire season.

Incidentally his college football career was ended by the events of 7 December 1941. He was washing the lunch dishes in the kitchen of his fraternity and listening to the bears game on the radio when the announcer interrupted his playing calling with a special news bulletin. Time was about 1:30 pm, and his world changed forever. Not too long after that he was in the navy, headed for the Pacific.

I remember Jon Arnett playing for the Chicago Bears. "Jaguar Jon". He was past his prime when he came to the Bears but he was still one of the best. I looked up his stats. He was 5'11" and 197 lbs. That was huge for a running back in the 50s. And he was very fast, blond, movie-star handsome, a California golden boy.

Michael K said...

A good friend, the father of a former girlfriend, was a lineman at Rutgers in the days of "Seven Blocks of Granite" and was later a Corsair pilot flying off Guadalcanal.

He also, like Ted Willams, flew Corsairs in Korea.

His son is a friend of mine in Tucson and flew F 18s in the first Gulf War.

I used to play golf with him. He was a gymnast and had incredible balance.

He could run the ball and, if an attempt at a tackle was made, he could put his hand on the ground and turn faster than any D back.

He decided he wanted to play golf, started from zero knowledge, and was shooting in the 70s in a year.

Great guy. I did not know he ever played for the Bears. He did play for the Rams,

Roughcoat said...

Cool story, Michael.

Yes, Chicago was Arnett''s last stop in his football career. As mentioned, he was past his prime but still an excellent running back, exciting to watch. His successor at RB was the great Willie Galimore. When Galimore was killed in a car accident near the Bears' training camp Chicago drafted Gale Sayers. Three great running backs in a row.

Kristin Mink saw protesters confront Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a DC Mexican restaurant. She read about the owner of a Virginia restaurant owner who kicked out White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. And she heard Congresswoman Maxine Waters call on citizens to “push back” on Trump Cabinet members they encounter in their daily lives.

So when Mink, a sixth-grade teacher in the DC area, spotted Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt at lunch on Monday, she knew she had to say something.
<
Holding her son in her arms, Mink approached the basement table where Pruitt was dining with one other person. Her husband filmed.

“This is my son. He loves animals. He loves clean air. He loves clean water,” she told Pruitt. “Meanwhile, you’re slashing strong fuel standards for cars and trucks for the benefit of big corporations. You’ve been paying about $50 a night to stay in a DC condo that’s connected to an energy lobbying firm while approving their dirty sands pipeline.”

Pruitt looked Mink in the eyes as she spoke, occasionally summoning a grimace. He did not say anything in response.

“We deserve to have somebody at the EPA who actually does protect our environment, somebody who believes in climate change and takes it seriously for the benefit of all of us, including our children,” Mink told Pruitt. “So I would urge you to resign before your scandals push you out.”
