"An animated political video featured in The New York Times’ opinion section has sparked outrage among a number of leaders and advocates in the LGBTQ community."

"The short cartoon depicts U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as gay paramours — a trope used numerous times by comedians and satirists seeking to mock the relationship between the two leaders," NBC newsplains.
“Trump and Putin: A Love Story” is part of a three-video series titled “Trump Bites,” which was animated by Oscar-nominated animator Bill Plympton and produced by Billy Shebar and David Roberts. In The New York Times article accompanying the video, which was posted on the Times website in late June, the creators said the series is a “riff on Mr. Trump’s absurd utterances to illustrate the president’s tumultuous inner life of paranoia, narcissism and xenophobia.”

Bill Plympton has been around a long time. He's most famous (to me anyway) for "How to Kiss" (and his Trump + Putin video uses the same humor of making kissing grotesque and ridiculous):

Most in the media and Hollywood don’t like gay people or black people. They want to like them because they feel it’s wrong not to like them. But they don’t like them. The criticisms of Clarence Thomas are mostly racist. Not to say his critics otherwise agree with his judicial philosophy, but their criticisms contain a fair amount of negative stereotypes about blacks.

Liberals believe in nothing that they virtue signal. Racism, xenophobia, misogyny — all the items in the Deplorables Basket — are Simply props of the moment to hold up in the public square. Their real meaning is always the same: “I am good. Let me keep my privileged lifestyle. Others are bad. Get them.”

Is there ever a moment in their sad, hate-filled lives that the Left is not in a new rage over one perceived slight or offense?

It is so tiresome, and it is why so many, including potential allies to their causes, are tuning them out.

The offended readers need to step back, get their bearings, and return to Item #1 in the prog catechism, namely: in prog politics, politics trumps everything.

Race, gender, you name it. You say you are a black man from south Georgia, born in poverty, oppressed under segregation? But you are conservative? Get your sorry black a** back to the plantation!

Therefore, dear prog NYT readers, thou shalt not throw hissy fits about homophobic slights when: 1. politics demands a focus on Getting Trump and 2. homophobic smears are useful in tainting the opposition.

Plympton's an old-school kind of cartoonist, & either doesn't know, doesn't care, or both about modern PC intersectionalities. It's not Plympton's transgression that surprises me. It's the NYT.

But the Left has always had it's barely suppressed pockets of homophobia in any case. Whenever Andrew Sullivan would wander off the reservation, email full of homophobic slurs would come pouring in. This happened repeatedly.

Eh, it's just the usual leftist tactic of trying to undermine and subvert the enemy's strong points.

Conservatives are patriotic and see Trump as a president who loves America. Therefore, it pleases the Dem and GOPe swamp creatures and the dullards like Inga who slavishly follow their lead to scream "Treason! You're traitors!" at us. (Note that these same fools will turn around and call us "xenophobes" in the next breath. That's a bit of a contradiction, isn't it?) The "racist" card has been so overplayed it no longer has any effect. "Traitor" packs more of a punch because it's hitting a core value of the right. Or it would pack a punch, if it wasn't so laughably transparent. Yeah, I'm a traitor and love Russia. *Eye roll*

Similarly, while most conservatives are not the rabid homophobes leftists imagine they are, the right does value traditional masculinity and makes snide comments about leftist soy boys all the time. Putin and Trump both pride themselves on being tough alpha males. So of course, it is utterly predictable that the left will try to flip the narrative. The left used "cowboy" as an insult during the Reagan and Dubya era - but then realized right-wingers like cowboys. Yeah, Reagan's a cowboy! So what? So they changed their tactics. They are saying to the right that masculinity is a sham. Because the left thinks conservatives are homophobes, they imagine that portraying Putin and Trump as gay lovers is especially hurtful. Again, it's not because most of us no longer give a shit what the left has to say about anybody or anything.

Michael K said...

Yes, the Colbert thing was another attempt.

It's pretty lame but also revealing when the left uses gay as a slur.

The new Zogby poll should have the left worried, but of course they know the arc of history goes left.

Why did Mueller time the indictments to torpedo the summit? Well, as MK points out this might have something to do with it:

"Democratic pollster John Zogby doesn’t care much for many of President Trump’s policies and thinks the man is rude, but he’s also coming to the conclusion that the Republican has something very big going for him.

“Some people just know how to win,” said Zogby, who didn’t think Trump would make it out of the Republican primaries in 2016.

He compares Trump to three former presidents, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt, who entered office to shock from the ruling elite. “With all three there was sense by the elites that this was the end of the world,” said Zogby.

But like them, Trump has connected with many in the country by battling the ruling powers. In his latest John Zogby Strategies poll, 54 percent view Trump as one “who is fighting the Washington, D.C. establishment,” compared to 26 percent who view him as an insider. He revealed the results in his Forbes Magazine column.

ew polling from Zogby’s son Jonathan, who conducts the trademarked Zogby Poll, revealed that feeling is true even among some Hispanics and African Americans. His polling shows that a sizable portion of minorities feel positive about their lives and future finances under Trump, something that his father John Zogby said could “lessen the fervor to say, ‘We’re going to Hell, I’ve got to get this guy out of there.’ ”

to illustrate the president’s tumultuous inner life of paranoia, narcissism and xenophobia.

How the fuck do they know what Trump's inner life is like?

1) Paranoia? Maybe he believes that the MSM and the deranged Left is out to get him? If you were him, wouldn't you? It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

2) Narcissism? In a politician? No fucking way! I just thought every other fucking building in West Virginia was named after Robert Byrd because they loved him so much. At least Trump paid for the buildings he put his name on.

3) Xenophobia? He's married two fucking immigrants! America first means just that America first...not fuck everyone else.

How about they do their next series on Trump Derangement Syndrome and the meltdown of the Left?

I don't know much of the man who made this video, but the emotion of the video seems weirdly out of place in the left today. Sure the video makes fun of Trump, but it does it in a kind childish, somewhat light-hearted manner. The left generally strikes me as much, much angrier. They are possessed with a violent rage, in many cases quite literally. I wonder if the artist who made the video is trying to rein in the let somewhat. Saying in effect, "Hey let's insult and make fun of Trump, but let's do it this way and not that other way." I think more and more of the temperamentally moderate people on the left are starting to realize their anger and outrage won't necessarily translate into an electoral win in November or 2020. In fact it is probably hurting them.

They're woke but sleepy. While reconciliation of a philosophy that is internally, externally, and mutually inconsistent is hard, reconciliation of a Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic, and congruent philosophy, is wicked outside of an isolated frame of reference.

I would have used this gem from Robert Preston as the underscoring:

Along the banks of the Seine
Just take a walk now and then
You'll meet some interesting men: Gay Paree!
Along the Rue Madeleine
Each evening 'round about ten
You'll see it time and time again: Gay Paree!
If you've a soiree to spare
Go to the Follies Bergeres
You'll see such gaiety there
C'est la vie!
...

The Champs Elysees I would rate
Perhaps the one thing that's straight as can be

Are the LGBTQ leaders upset because of the notion that a gay relationship is automatically funnier than a straight one? I would think the underlying joke is that people who are in love are not thinking straight, and are probably not focussed on the public good. There are a number of pairs of lovers among the Trump haters trying to bring down the President: Pete and Lisa, Nellie and Bruce, Ali and James. To me it is funny to suggest that Bob and Jim are another pair--Bob Mueller obviously the boy, Jim Comey the girl. This would help explain their relationship as almost inseparable friends, their tendency to bail each other out of the many fiascos in their careers, and their insistence on attacking a duly elected President.

Some people think Putin had Litvinenko poisoned. Lots of possibilities, but a more plausible one than that Putin ordered it, I think, is that when Litvinenko accused Putin of being a paedophile into boys, his murderer ended up believing it, and so had him killed because the murderer actually was into boys and had delusional visions of joining the Putin team as a hero of sorts to get himself some access to boys and power.

Don't underestimate the cosmopolitan, international preferences of child molesters. He who is considered a weirdo in his own country, so soon as transplanted into a foreign shore, may have his suggestions of weirdo-ness passed off (often partially from the natural willingness of good people to give hospitality) as arising from unfamiliarity with the foreign customs of his native land, often to his selfish gain and glee and the misery of those he meets in his travels.
