I have recently learned, from a reliable source, that the point at which the cake decorator in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case declined to decorate the cake came when the couple insisted on having him put some biblical verses on the cake as part of the decoration, with red lines through them. Can anyone confirm this detail? Because if true, then the couple was insisting that Jack Phillips commit blasphemy, which IMO they had no right to do.

Again, can someone confirm this detail?

Humperdink said...

I am surprised at Harley's rhetoric. I am also surprised that people on the left and the right think this week's news is the end of it. The tariff bluster is a negotiation, not a policy. Trump wants to brings other nations in line. Mock him if you want, but Trump is no fool. He plays the long game. I would wait awhile to see the results before I would render a judgement on Trumps tactics.

This one’s for you Drago. I recall how sure you were that this judge would rule in Manafort’s favor. LOL.

“WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal judge in Virginia rejected a bid by President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, to throw out charges in the special counsel's Russia investigation, clearing the way for a much-anticipated trial to start as scheduled next month.

The decision Tuesday by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III was a setback for Manafort in his defense against tax and bank fraud charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.”

Today, June 26 2018, would have been the 100th birthday of approximately 500 American men who died before they were 25 either as a result of enemy action during the five calendar years of WWII or as a result of other fatal causes, related to their military service, while serving in uniform December 1941-December 1945.

Sure almost all of them would have died by now even if there never was that war with the Japanese Empire and the Nazi half of the Nazi/Soviet Pact.

Tomorrow will have been the 100th birthday of another 500 American men who died before they were 25, under the same conditions.

And the next day after that, another 500. And the next day and the next day.

The numbers are worse in Russia, but that means nothing if the one person you cared about was the one who died fighting for the United States. (or in my case the two or three people who would have made such a difference ....)

We all have our problems in this life.

Some people have a good life for no observable reason but their good luck.

Some of us are stuck in a world where we have to wonder why oh why is Gorsuch not as smart as Alito?

Sydney or the Bush. I would have given the five stars to Spruance, not to Halsey, but I might have made that choice by flipping a coin. Let's all head to Bill Maudlin's and quaff a few root beers.

Fifth and 72nd, 1985, and then again a couple times in the 1990s. I remember.

Luke 10:23 (5th and 72nd, 1985), Luke 10:24 (tonight, here in New Haven, an ordinary summer night)

This is a ploy. The troll only needs to spend 10 seconds shitposting while the normal person wastes 10 minutes writing a much more wordy reply.

The troll will reply with a stupid rejoinder making the normal person post as many long replies as possible.

Using the normal person's aversion to bullshit against them and wasting their time...

If they are good, their act will be believable and they probably won't get banned unless the blog hostess figures out what they are doing.

Inga, who were your friends in high school?
Leaving aside all the controversies here, I can't help wondering.
Which of your friends in high school reminds you most of someone you argue with a lot here?

I am guessing you are going to say that doctor guy from California, but maybe I am wrong.

Maybe Meade, he seems to be the sort of person people like to remember having been a friend of in high school.

Bad Lieutenant, who hates me? Some other commenter who impolitely rails on the blog hostess?

Is it possible you are a pro--Trump performance artist?

after all Roseanne loves Trump.

Tom Arnold loves Roseanne. And the links follow on from there ....

Can you remember how enviable the two of them were in high school?

Anyway, if you are a performance artist, God bless, if you are not, well, God bless anyway. Of course you are not pro-life but if I only wanted good things for pro-life people I would not be much of a Christian, would I? So, God bless ....

I hope some day you will be pro-life like me. Sure I would have been that guy in high school who you thought had really bad taste in clothes and who spent too much effort making the teachers laugh.

But I liked the teachers, and when you like someone, you try to make them laugh, even if you are some kid in high school who gets disrespected for treating the teachers like fellow human beings, Everybody has a bad day almost every day, you know that, and it is no small thing to try to make someone laugh on a difficult day. And I could have had nicer clothes but I had lots of siblings and I pretended not to want nice clothes, out of kindness. Compassion is a real thing.

Please be a dear and vote for Trump in 27 months, because I politely asked, and because I care.

You can be a poet, you can be a friend to some creature who never had a friend in this world. I believe you can!

Wrong again parrot.

Judge Ellis is overseeing a case where the underlying evidence pre dated the special counsel investigation so Ellis was unlikely at this point to throw it out.

The cases where the charges are likely to be tossed is the Flynn set up and Muellers indictments of companies and individuals that dont exist!

LOL

What I loved was Ellis calling out the obvious and doing it with style.

I used to read and comment on left wing blogs but that all stopped in 2004 when they started banning anyone who did not adopt the party line,

What we see today, is a party without ideas.

There was a pretty good book a few yeas ago called, "Spoiled Rotten", that explained a lot of this.

The Democrats have these identity groups, often with conflicting agendas.

What do they do to keep them all happy ?

Trump hate is the current plan but that might weaken as some groups, like blacks, realize they are better off with Trump.

The knee jerk left, like Inga, has not thought about that yet. By the time it dawns on them, we may have a bigger majority in Congress.

There is no question Ellis would like to toss this case and he is making it clear just how far afield Mueller has gone...and we all know why.

If I had only known, that would have been another route to dozens of grandchildren! Oh well!) Give Inga a break.

The DNC's entire strategy for the midterms, which has never really jelled, is collapsing.

Trump's base voters are solidifying in numbers never before seen and there are reports that over 60% of the attendees at Trump's Minnesota rally were democrats or independents!

Yikes!

On top of that, the economic numbers are solid and if anyone reads Bloomberg on the business side there was a fantastic article describing in detail how the Chinese are realizing they are screwed in their negotiations with Trump and his team and the article explains why that is.

The German automakers have already caved on tariffs (they have no choice as we have all the leverage) and now Canada is threatening tariffs on lowcost imports because.....(wait for it).....Trump is shutting down the NAFTA loopholes that let Canada and Mexico act as gateways for foreign products!

One of the items Canada is threatening tariffs on to slow down imports........Steel.

That's right. Canada is going to have to crank up tariffs on steel because all those foreign products, if they can't be shipped to the US (and they won't be under Trump) will simply sit in Canada and destroy Canada's domestic production!

Welcome to The Art of The Deal Justin. I hope you are capable of learning at a faster clip then the lefties in the US, otherwise....you are screwed.

Drago, I don’t know where you’re getting your info about German car makers from...

“President Trump raised the stakes in America’s trade war with Europe Tuesday, hinting that tariffs on imported cars from the European Union may be coming soon.

“We are finishing our study of Tariffs on cars from the E.U. in that they have long taken advantage of the U.S. in the form of Trade Barriers and Tariffs,” Trump said in an early morning Tweet. “In the end it will all even out - and it won’t take very long!”

If he goes ahead with his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs, a mid-sized BMW 5 series, which has a MSRP of $52,650, would cost $65,812 instead?

If Trump goes ahead with tariffs on European autos, the European reaction is likely to much stronger than it was for the steel and aluminum tariffs. Europe’s car exports to the US reached $44 billion last year.

This sort of thing endangers the blue wave, I think, since winning a low turnout primary isn't always a good sign.

Drago said...

Francisco D: "Many BMWs are made in South Carolina, such as the car I drive (X3). The sporty Z series is also made in Spartanburg."

Not only are BMW's manufactured in South Carolina, but a significant number of those BMW's are actually imported into Europe!

And that's with the 10% tariff on them and they are still competitive within the European market!

Amazing.

The EU currently has a $150Billion trade surplus with the US....and that's what Trump is going to cut into "bigly".

No more stupid deals where the US simply accepts permanent unfair trade practices. All we want is a level field. If the Europeans want to go to zero across the board, fantastic.

But the days of our charging 2.5% tariffs on European imports while we are charged a 10% tariff to export to Europe are over.

OOOOOOOO-VERRRRRRRRRRR.

Good times, good times. When I say what I mean, even on an obscure corner of the internet, I sometimes am rewarded: perhaps with a dream, late at night, of beautiful moments in places where I used to live, perhaps with better than cinematic visions, driving to work in the morning, of the beautiful trees and the beautiful skies lining the road on my way to work - sure, working is a form of suffering, but the trees, the skies, it is all good ....
