In case you wanted to know how they select for Harvard College

Probably different when our last Harvard College grad president, JFK, applied (plus he was a transfer student from Princeton).

JFK was also a legacy.

New Democrat slogan: Punch a Deplorable!

The hubris repeats. When Hillary thought she had it in the bag she and the Democrats exulted with the deplorables speech. That was the psychic reward for victory. They think they have it in the bag now , and they are letting loose with the mau-mauing. This is their reward for victory.

Assuming of course they win.

I2 was very good! The only negative comparison to the original I would make is that it did not have a set-piece quite as good as "100 Mile Dash" in I1. Portal Gal or whatever her name was is great, hope we see her again.

And having let The Underminer go without closure, I'll bet it's not 15 years until I3..

Hillary Clinton compared President Donald Trump to the president of Turkey - a controversial figure who returned to office with broad new powers that lack checks and balances. In a speech to Oxford University on Monday, Clinton again bemoaned the American electoral college system that saw her win the popular vote in 2016 but lose the presidency. ´Populists can stay in power by mobilizing a fervent base. ... . - Daily Mail

Go away lady!

Interesting note on the Custer's Last Stand. In September 1868 a group of approximately fifty hand-picked frontiersmen, under the leadership of veteran officers and equipped with seven-shot Spencer repeating carbines, were trapped by an overwhelming force of Cheyenne and Oglala Sioux to be at least ten times larger on a sand bar in the center of a seasonally dry fork of the Arikaree River (today called Beecher's Island after the officer who lost his life in the attack). The frontiersmen successfully stood off repeated attacks by the Cheyenne and their Sioux allies over a period of days until some of the scouts were able to slip away undetected and eventually reached an army fort. The 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers were sent from the fort, found the surviving scouts (45 out of 50, with 16 wounded) and relieved them.

One of the officers who studied the battle and wrote a report was George Armstrong Custer, but he seems to have overlooked the value of repeating carbines. When his own 7th Cavalry came up against Crazy Horse, Gall, and Sitting Bull at the Little Big Horn his troops were armed with single-shot rifles.

One thing Donny Trump seems to do is respect the Constitution and the separation of powers. He gets criticized most fervently for following the law where Obama simply ignored it. So comparing him to some kind of dictator is ridiculous.

Left-wing billionaire Tom Steyer is spending tens of millions of dollars on advertising urging that President Donald Trump be impeached — because he thinks it is the only way for Democrats to win the 2018 midterm elections.

That'll work!

A quote from the New Yorker article by George Packer. It’s about Ben Rhodes’ book about his life with Obama. “With a fine writer’s sense, Rhodes includes, along with the important speeches and decisions of state, a quiet moment in which Obama, standing on a beach in Hawaii, points to a hill and says, “My mom used to come here every day and sit there looking out at the bay when she was pregnant with me. I’ve always thought that’s one of the reasons why I have a certain calm.” This ability to stand back from the passing frenzy and survey it at a distance was an intellectual strength and a political liability. More than any modern President, Obama had a keen sense of the limits of American power—and of his own.”

You have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at this. Who is the most pitiable character in this little parable? Packer, Rhodes or Obama?

Quaestor said...

For someone with a "fine writer's sense" Rhodes was risibly inarticulate that evening in November 2016.

Evan Rachel Wood’s 24-hr. “hunger strike” is the perfect example of why the civil war that so many like to fret about will never happen. These people don’t make sacrifices for their beliefs and it is exceedingly unlikely that they’ll be able to persuade others to make the sacrifices for them.

Pianoman said...

The youth group at our church does this event every year: https://www.30hourfamine.org/

This includes teenagers. It's a fund raiser, and helps raise awareness of world hunger.

So color me unimpressed with the latest 24-hour hunger strike virtual signaling.

The replacement of Spencer repeating carbines with single shot Springfields may not have been a bad move. There are some very interesting Youtube arguments on the subject. The Spencer is a rather poor specimen of its type, and moreover the Indians at Beechers Island probably weren't as well armed as those at Little Big Horn eight years later, who apparently had a large number of Henry and Winchester repeaters.

In any case, this was not Custer's call, this was a US Army Ordnance call.

Your civil war isn't likely to come about due to the danger of left-wing terrorism.
You are right, that lot has no power to do that. And if they create a martyr or two, its all to the good, looking at it with cold blood.

The real risk is very different. The civil war can only really happen between the right wing and the state. This requires that the state be fully in the hands of the left, and that they then provoke the right, through intolerable policies, into an insurgency.

This is a very likely scenario.

All practicing Mormon’s fast for 24 hours on the first Sunday of each month. Every month.

They also donate the proceeds that would have gone to those meals, and more as they have the means, to a fund called the fast offering which is used to take care of the cash needs of the poor in their congregation, which can - might - include immigrants. But that’s not Hollywood enough for publicity I suppose.

"Who is the most pitiable character in this little parable? Packer, Rhodes or Obama?"

No: us.

To think that those two fiction writers, Rhodes the aspiring novelist and O the fabricating autobiographer, held all that power . . .

Fortunately, the only narrative they'll be curating from now on is their own.

Big Mike said...

@buwaya, you’re right about Army Ordnance. As late as the Spanish-American War some people in Ordnance were arguing in favor of equipping our troops with black powder firearms. Still, the flamboyant Custer was famous and so he was not without clout.j

I met the NPA several times, and I was their "guest", once.

US leftists are not the NPA. Their hardcore was incredibly disciplined, well educated, ascetic, self-sacrificing, and dedicated to the people. And intensely nationalistic.

They were Lenin's "saints" (ref to Dzerzhinski), or Bernard Fall's Viet Minh "monks".

Impressive and scary.

Fortunately there were very few of this top cadre, the people they were trying to organize - are difficult to organize, and I believe there are hardly any left.

Your lot are really more like Djilas' corrupt "new class".

Surely and that made then very dangerous, almost fifty years after its founding still a growing concern.
