3 years ago, Trump announced that he was running for President, and, oh, how the media mocked him.

He was manifestly a joke. He could never become President. The question was only how much chaos and hilarity he could inject into the process before the serious candidates had the stage to themselves.

Via "FLASHBACK: Three Years Ago Today – Donald Announced His Historic Run for President — WATCH HOW MEDIA MOCKED HIM" (Gateway Pundit, June 16th), via Drudge.

My attitude was just about exactly what you see in that video except that I believed in ignoring him (because, don't encourage him). My post noting the occasion was just a collection 5 anagrams of the name I would not say, and the only tag was "nothing," which I used in the sense of muttering an obscenity.

But over the 3 years, my attitude has changed. I'm thinking of mining my archive to write a book with the title "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Donald Trump." Seriously, that's my title. I'll self-publish on Kindle Direct if I can make that happen. Consider encouraging me. Or not.

I have a friend who was an early adopter of Donald Trump. NOT the person you would expect at all. I thought she was ridiculous for supporting him. I thought he would drop out well before the actual election.

Now I like him only because I think our political/media system is completely broken. I think Hillary winning would have sealed our fate. I think he shakes things up and we need that.

BTW - you can tell the DNC MSM were frightened and freaked out over the IG report by the way they spun the headlines.

No mention of the facts inside the IG report by the hack press. Just cherry picked sliced of The narrative. The media are the deep state.

I think you're a great example of a person who is more or less comfortable on the side of progressive causes, yet is totally free from Trump Derangement Syndrome. This allows you to see how silly or extreme a lot of the criticism of Trump is. He may not be a great president, but he probably means well; he really only has to be better than the alternatives that were available.

You mock what you don't understand. That's most comedy. Add some foul language, and it can be hilarious. Bill Cosby, a sweet comedian, understood life, and still found ways to laugh at it. Despite the fact that in his own life, he was a bit of an ape--in the sense of giving in to his animal desires, and not overcoming them as humans are expected to (ape not intended in the racist sense).

The book would definitely garner my interest. :)

I just want to comment on the video. Gayle King has a quote from Trump. I think it's her. I don't actually watch CBS This Morning, so I can't say for certain.
Anyway, the quote is "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

And she and her co-host ridicule this, claiming you can't say these things, and you can't get elected President saying these things.

But this is exactly the kind of thing that Trump supporters (and there turned out to be a lot of them) wanted to hear someone saying. And it's not racist to say that we're importing crime from Mexico. If it is, then facts are racist.

Which is exactly what is wrong with Washington and the Media. We've gotten so obsessed about not wanting to offend this ethnic group or that that we're afraid to speak the truth.

It's not racist to point out that Americans of Asian descent typically have higher academic scores than other groups. Is it heredity? Possibly? Is it environment? Possibly. I don't know. I just know that it's a fact.

Go ahead and speak the truth. Offend people. If people are offended, at least you know that someone is listening.

@Althouse, I’ve watched you evolve over the past three years, and I’d buy the book just to see whether your personal observations match my own.

On a practical level, yesterday’s Instapundit linked to an essay by Sarah Hoyt about how to get published. I didn’t go there, but she has published online a lot of “how to get started writing” materials and as she is a successful author herself (I have a lot of her books) it’s worth reading what she has to say.

On a personal note, I recommend starting sooner rather than later. I have been retired for three years now, and I have what I call “tomorrow-itis.” As in, I fon’t have to be at work tomorrow so if I don’t get it done today there’s always tomorrow. It’s a lost discipline about time. You retired more recently; you may still be well-disciplined about being focused on getting things done according to a schedule.

No. That's exactly the point. I must write for the intrinsic experience of writing, not obligation. I absolutely don't want to feel that I owe anyone anything. It must have the self-generating energy of the blog or I won't do it. The minute it loses that quality for me, I will default to the blog. It's a project that I want to do, not to be incentivized by money. After I do it, I'd like to make money from it, but I can't do it because of the money. The IG thing was something I was balky about precisely because I felt I was supposed to be doing it.

Thanks, but there are absolutely no expenses. My resources are my archive, my own mind, and the internet. It's taking the methodology of old posts like "How Kerry Lost Me" that are my genuine efforts to look back and see what happened to my own mind and what I was reacting too. With Kerry, the big impact came when he told some guy "You're not listening."

The video shows the genesis of how Trump won the nomination...each of these chortling media savants couldn't wait to have their bookers get Trump on their shows so they could embarrass him and become heroes to their journo-list friends. Fortunately the opposite happened and Trump played them for the fools they are. The more exposure they gave him and his platform the more the American people heard his views and straight talk (we get the hyperbole even if the media pretends not to) the more they liked it.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2015/12/10/the-many-times-donald-trump-and-morning-joe-yukked-it-up/?utm_term=.0b5a2569562a

Personally I was in Cruz's camp but the media had already decided he
was Hitler and a threat so they were locked and loaded for him...the media viewed Trump as an ally to destroy the reputations of all the Republican nominees so why not roll him out there and encourage him to slander the other nominees. Oh it was a heady time to be a progressive!

The irony of this process is absolutely priceless.

They created Trump and now they must deal with him.

BTW...I would buy the book!

I have used antepenultimate a few times, but never preantepenultimate. I just recently learned that you can go one farther down that string to propreantepenultimate. Oh I would read that book. Has there been a book, by anyone who (a) voted for Obama once, or twice, and then (b) voted for Trump?

I don't know that Althouse voted for Trump, of course. She hasn't said. But unless her book title is just a pure play off the Dr. Strangelove subtitle, and unless Althouse's "love" for Donald Trump has arisen after the 2016 election, I am very informally presuming that she voted for Trump. I'd definitely buy that book.

I know that there are people, and perhaps even millions of people, who have voted for both Obama and Trump. Those people's votes counted just as much as the votes of Paul Krugman, Jonah Goldberg, Jennifer Rubin and George Will. And Althouse's vote, having been cast in the razor-thin Wisconsin majority effectively "counted" more than most Americans' votes.

I just don't know what the vote of an Obama/Trump voter means. Maybe it means what Scott Adams thinks it means; that voters are essentially ill-informed and emotionally-reactive.

Seriously: I'm Canadian, and live in Ontario (where Doug Ford, the "Northern Donald Trump" was just elected to the equivalent of governor of our province). I lean "small-c" conservative, which is already an aberration in this country. I cannot count the number of dinner parties I've been a part of where I've been screamed down for my support of Mr. Trump. Don't get me wrong: I see his flaws, but I also see a man committed to the betterment of the American people, and one who clearly believes that Congress's proper role is to make laws. I also understand that political bluster is part of the negotiation process, and wish people would stop have fainting spells when they read words written for swing state voters.

I love our dinner party debates, usually because I'm the only one taking an opposite view from the standard, easy positions. Your blog has been invaluable for helping me understand and frame things in a different way. And the comments hone those ideas to a fine edge.

If you need help getting the book published, I can help.

I've published nearly 20 books through my imprint, Peschel Press. I designed the cover and formatted the interiors for the trade paperback (through CreateSpace). I pride myself on the quality of my work, and to make sure they're indistinguishable, if not better, than what comes out of New York.

So if you give me the book in a Word file, I can do the interior. The cover design, well, I'm no artist, but can do layout and work with fonts and manipulate images. I've used various photo houses like Shutterstock, but even a simple text-only cover would be fine for this.

For the ebook, I make a version as part of the editing process, but I hire an ex-pat in Thailand (bbEbooks) to format the ebook for all the platforms. That way, if there's any problems, I go back to him. There are also ebook makers in the U.S. that could turn it around for you easily, too.

In other words, I'll be happy to work for you on this, free (doing the TPB would probably take less than a week, so it's not like it would be a huge job). Or I'll point you in various directions for resources and you decide.

One interesting question to decide would be to go wide (put the book up on all the sites -- Amazon, Kobo, Apple, etc. -- or stay exclusive with the Zon and put the book into Kindle Unlimited. That would probably give your book the widest exposure. And, yes, people can visit Amazon through your link, buy the book, and that'll put more coin in your pocket.

We traveled to Ireland a month after Trump announced he was running for the presidency. I didn't particularly care about Trump (though I had no intention of voting for him) because I wasn't ready to pay attention to the process.

The first place we stayed was Doonbeg, an awesome hotel. It is my favorite place of any of the hotels I have ever stayed. Trump was not a favorite of many of the people that we encountered in the area. They weren't pleased with the number of people that were fired when he purchased the Doonbeg golf club.

The Irish people are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. Within a few minutes of meeting these strangers treated us as long lost family members. I don't typically talk, discuss, debate, or argue politics with people. People being family, friends, and most definitely strangers. All they wanted to do was discuss Trump and not just for a few minutes.

I remember being embarrassed at the spectacle that was the Republican primary. The number of people involved, the press coverage, and most definitely Trump.

Chuck, the reason is simple. Althouse is someone we know. We've seen videos of Althouse and Meade being hassled by loonies at the Statehouse. No one but Althouse can ever know who she actually voted for in the privacy of the voting booth. But we know enough about her to make an informed evaluation of any statement she cares to make on the subject. You, on the other hand, are a fictional character. Statements made by fictional characters about how they voted are -- fictional. They are attempts by an author to manipulate. They aren't even lies. Absent the willing suspension of disbelief, they are evidence of nothing.

"I think I actually do have the explanation that you're looking for. Althouse never criticizes Trump, but I do."

Of course, those were the days when I became a fan of the Althouse blog and was relatively unnoticed as a commenter, expressing bland support for Althouse, and Governor Walker, and Justices Prosser and Roggensack. And as a Romney supporter in 2012, I was further unnoticed here. My one big departure with Althouse was her support for the Obergefell ruling, and her telling her otherwise-conservative readership, "You lost. Get over it."

Regarding whom Professor Althouse voted for, I have a strong recollection that she chose a masculine pronoun to describe the person she voted for. So, not Hillary nor Jill Stein. Probably Gary Johnson or perhaps Evan McMullin.

AA, I wholeheartedly encourage your writing that book!

The day DT announced, a friend of mine called in a real state of panic and screeched, "Donald Trump is running!"

I said, "Don't worry--he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning."

Two weeks later--can't even remember exactly why--I decided I supported him 100%--he was so much more human than the rest of the field.

Plus my kid knew one of his kids, so I knew that there actually was humanity involved--but that wouldn't have convinced me if he hadn't done something hilarious or outrageous or ballsy or weird that completely sold me. I underwent a complete gestalt shift.

Ive published several books via Amazon's CreateSpace in paper and kindle. I had a very good experience publishing wit CRC Press but Amazon is so much better I would never consider traditional publishing again.

My current Amazon project is editing and publishing John McConnell's 4 books on quality in a single volume.

It's been a while since I looked but I think Kindle pays 70% on books priced $9.99 and under, 35% if over 9.99. In other words don't price between 10 & 20 dollars.

Paper copies pay between @30-80% royalty depending on sales channel an pricing.

Contact me if you need any help.

But most republican voters did not like or want Mitt Romney. Romney and the rest of you tried to get hillary elected.

The CoC spent millions destroying all of the other republicans in the primary in personal and vicious ways. They refused to treat Obama as nastily as they treated other republicans.

Then they switched over and supported Hillary against Trump in the general. Like you did.

You have trashed and attacked every non-cuck republican. Only good little globalist pets like Kucinich or Jeb are OK with the CoC.

Every President is in the way of being a national joke. Or at any rate the object of humor.

Nixon was
Ford was
Carter was
Reagan, and how
Clinton was
Bush of course, though the good humor was rapidly disappearing.

Obama was not, very rarely troubled by public mockery in commercial media. The first unfunny President.

Trump is an inherently funny man, a talented comedian himself, but the commercial media offers only an angry and usually unfunny mockery of him.

Yancey Ward said...

When he announced, I thought it unlikely he could win the nomination, but I always took him seriously as a candidate. It was only around December of 2015 that I realized he was the most likely candidate to win the Republican nomination when not a single other candidate took up position on immigration on the same side as Trump. That one issue separated Trump from the pack in the most clear cut fashion, and the divided voting in the early primaries did the rest of the work for him.

Once he had the nomination against Clinton, I actually always expected him to win but for one day or two of doubt following the Access Hollywood tape's release. Other than that moment of doubt, I thought he would win easily, I just didn't expect him to win the way he actually did by taking WI, MI, and PA- I thought it would be VA that would be the key.

The media treatment follows, I think, the change in the nature of the MSM.
When their audience absolutely determined their success, it called the tune.
That's when MSM operations paid their way as purely commercial operations.
Today the MSM is owned by bigger players who value their media operations as much or more for the political influence or protection they create. Their success does not depend as much on pleasing the public.
These new imperatives changed the tone, because the objectives have changed.

I'll buy a copy, Althouse. You're a good writer and fair-minded to boot.

I quote myself in May, 2016, "I will never vote for Trump under any circumstances." In November, 2016, I voted for Trump.

For years I've been preaching that it's your duty to vote. You don't have to love or even approve of a candidate, but you must discriminate between the top two and pick the one who is less horrible. This is how I justified voting for Trump.

In the days, weeks and months since, Trump has repeatedly surprised me at his accomplishments, unalloyed positive moves for the American people. Many of his coups even qualify as conservative in nature. He does this despite an endless barrage of irrational hatred from the loser left.

I'm now a Trump supporter. There is a sense of optimism in this country very similar to that achieved by Reagan. Trump, unlike Obama, doesn't act with a view to producing the mere appearance of good. Trump actually requires results. He sets the conditions for negotiation, and then fights tenaciously for the results he seeks. He is not a slave to ideology.

The "resistance" becomes more ridiculous by the minute. Maher, Griffin and DeNiro are the representatives of an unhinged mob. The apolitical middle doesn't need any help in recognizing the lack of seriousness, the stupidity, of the left. In 2020, they will vote for Trump.

1. From you earlier post, I did indeed vote for Trump in 2016. I just don't know why that is so hard for some to believe. I preferred having the Federalist Society pick federal court nominees, to having the Hillarycrats doing it. I am certain that I posted to that effect in advance of election day.

2. The way that I effectively voted for Trump without having to do the distasteful thing of putting a mark next to the names of Trump and Pence, was to fill in the Republican straight party ballot option on my Michigan ballot. Michigan is one of the few states that still allow straight party voting and to me the funny part about that is that Michigan Republicans have passed legislation to remove it, while Democrats have gone to federal court to maintain it. The Michigan law is currently enjoined. The Democrats' stated position is that the option to vote a straight party ballot saves time. And because some of the majority-minority areas in the state are so heavily Democratic, the push to remove the straight party option would disparately impact minorities. Making their lines longer, etc. Don't ask me; it ain't my argument. We Republicans want to get rid of straight party voting because what happens is that thousands of low-information voters in inner cities and communities of color are instructed by their church leaders and union leaders to "Vote Straight Democratic Ticket." When they do that, they automatically cast votes for many down-ballot races (university boards, commissioners, etc.) for which they would have no idea who is running or why or even what the office is. We want to put an end to that; make them work harder for their votes.

And that, Fabi, was my previous explanation on the subject but you obviously didn't pay enough attention and either didn't understand it or didn't remember it correctly.

Trump is a despicable, insulting, incompetent asshole... who was preferable to the Democrat.

btw; While Michigan Republicans are trying to ban straight party voting, Kansas Republicans are trying to enact a straight party voting option.

Michigan Republicans see the Democrats' sociopolitical structures (churches, unions, etc.) conspiring to instruct their memberships to vote straight party.

Kansas Republicans, for reasons I am not clear about, must feel that they have their own sociopolitical structures to do the same for them.

I'd like to talk to a Kansas Republican about it.

Ann, please go on in your book and explain how funny that photo is, how clever and brilliant is the strategy behind it, and how much more you must love the president because of it.
While you're in that carefree, lovesick mood you've evoked, go ahead and describe how lovable the President is when he carries on as a serial sex criminal and pervert; how delectable and sexy you find his embrace of Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin; how classy and admirable he is when he insults everyone from Gold Star mothers to black athletes to Justin Trudeau. Sure Ann, go ahead and write that book about how're not only not worried, but love the idea that the President is something ranging from the stooge to the dupe to the agent of the Russian intelligence services. When it was down to Trump and Hillary, the choice was clear; the alternative frightening. Trump presented as a serious candidate. Most of what he said, although often baldly phrased, was in the wider sense true. Hillary did not present herself at all, but rather coasted on her reputation as a scofflaw and troublemaker.

Was very pleasantly surprised the morning after election. And I am more thankful every day.
