"Yes, Donald Trump Is Making White People More Hateful/A new study finds empirical evidence of the 'Trump Effect.'"

So says The Nation.

Shortly before the 2016 election, [Brian Schaffner, a scholar at UMass Amherst,] randomly divided almost 1,200 non-Hispanic white respondents into four groups. He showed one, the control group, three relatively anodyne statements made by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the course of the campaign. The second group was given the same three statements, and also shown an excerpt of Trump’s infamous Mexican rapists speech. A third group saw a different inflammatory statement, “Our great African-American President hasn’t exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore.” And the final group was shown all five.

Schaffner then asked respondents to say something in their own words about African-Americans, Mexicans, white people, politicians, the middle class and millennials.... The results were surprising. Respondents who were exposed to Trump’s comments about “thugs” in Baltimore weren’t affected by that inflammatory statement to a significant degree, but those who read his tirade about Mexicans were. They made significantly more negative comments about the groups in question than those who only saw more conventional campaign rhetoric. Eight hundred people were recruited to rate the comments on a scale from “very negative” to “very positive,” and Schaffner averaged out the results....

Schaffner’s own explanation is that Trump is giving respondents tacit permission to be bigots. “People aren’t always sure what the norms are in terms of what’s OK and what’s not OK to say,” he says. “There have been several psychological studies showing that people tend to take cues from their peers when they’re asked to talk about other groups. When they hear somebody saying something offensive about some group, then they basically say to themselves, ‘oh, I can say that because this other person said it so it must be OK.’ And I think something similar is going on here. People hear a politician who is running for president using this inflammatory terminology, and they think, ‘well, if a major party’s presidential candidate is using this language than it must be acceptable for me.’ So I think people are changing their understanding about what the norms allow for, or preclude, based on what they’re hearing from Trump.”
The Nation's headline is bad. I'm only seeing reason to think people became more outwardly expressive. Who knows when people are "more hateful"? You could feel a lot of hate but hold your tongue. Maybe the most hateful people keep it to themselves.

Another 'scientific' paper proving that Conservatives are evil or bad people by the anti-Right Nation.

Yawn.

Generally it takes 2 weeks for someone to check their methodology and debunk them...which is printed on page 57, bottom of the page in 4 point type. Both sentences...while the Letters agreeing are covering three pages in the same issue.

What the Left is not getting is that their anti-Western culture Loud Mouths (who are a minority of actual professors...I think) make us now distrust the objectivity of these so called scientists.

And if we doubt their work, it has very little impact.

So keep up that two minutes hate.

If you want to get serious about it:

A) I don't trust any Left-wing "Social Scientist" to do a objective study about Trump.

B) I bet the Leftist Prof was REALLY surprised when his study made Trump look bad. Bet he was DESPERATELY trying to conduct a study that would say the opposite.

C) His sample size is too small, the people aren't chosen at random, we don't know what the statements are, or how he proved his results, or whether anyone did an OBJECTIVE analysis of his findings.

IOW, its the typical "Social Science" bullshit.

I don't think all wingers are that bad, but on the whole they were definitely ok with making sure kids and other vulnerable Americans die if they can't afford to get better.

Gun control/reform is popular, so you can't paint them all on that one, too. But unfortunately they think that the NRA is doing anything important other than protecting gun manufacturers and are therefore very resistant to any measures that will keep kids from getting killed. The amount of hatred some of them have shown toward a few of those MSD kids, despite the lifelong traumatizing horrors they had just lived through, is definitely a sign of lacking any basic human decency.

Again: Trump "Mexicans are Racist" quote makes Clinton supporters hate Millennials! (Fig 5, p<.05)

Differences are in the single-digit range, so hate is kind of a +/-5% thing, I guess.

Domestic Terrorist Achilles and Lazy Barstool Birkel are really running out of steam. At this point they sound like the tail-end ripple of a really long fart that's slowing down in frequency, but still has a couple vibrations left.

Why don't they run an ad of the MSD kids and put them behind crosshair targets? Can't they say what they really mean and show all the gun victimized kids that they'd like to shoot down? It seems that's what they're running on. That, and pricing the sick and indigent out of medical care.

At least they don't have an ideology, though. They just hate the poor, sick and vulnerable. Which is funny given how poor Achilles is and how empty a social life Birkel has and how tenuous his mental health is.

Birkel, how well do you think the word "hermit" describes you? Maybe Achilles can get you out of your basement and into the backwoods. You could even run around together shooting things. It would be a wanna-be survivalist's feel-good story of the year. Fantasize about the government going after both of you losers together. The outdoor conservative hermit and the indoor conservative hermit come together - the story of how two losers became best buds.

You'll have lots more Evanses in America now that you've defunded their care, Thomson.

I don't agree with the NHS decision and think their model's far from the best, but if there was anything that could have saved the kid's life it would have been done. There's nothing in America that would have worked for him that they couldn't try there, but it's nice hearing from strange medical ignoramuses like you who chime in about a non-issue just because Trump made a stupid, demagogic noise about it - as a way to shift the discussion from what Jimmy Kimmel stuck up for and what the Republicans made it a point to de-fund. That's tens of millions of folks, lots of Alfie Evanses. But I get it, you only care about one. The one that Trump said some bullshit about.

Michelle Dulak Thomson said...

PPPT,

I think the Republicans are pro-assisted suicide. They don't mind getting big business to assist in the mass suicides of many Americans.

There aren't "mass suicides" in the US. There never have been. There are indeed a lot of suicides, sure, and the effective ones generally involve guns -- they are a hefty proportion of "gun violence" -- but they generally kill only the shooter and whoever he (it's almost always a he) decides to kill first.

Men use guns. Women use pills, and ordinarily flub that. I think it was Christina Hoff Sommers who wrote (after a UUAW article saying that women were more likely to try to kill themselves than men, while mentioning parenthetically that more men actually died) that men were five times more likely to kill themselves than women.

The only mass suicide I can remember in the US was the Heaven's Gate cult, a couple of decades ago. Before that, Jonestown, which of course wasn't in the US.

PPPT,

Listen to me. Alfie Evans' parents had gotten him Italian citizenship. There were Italian doctors eager to work on his case. The NHS first cut off his oxygen, then argued that the flight might damage his health, so forbade the family leaving the country. A country where the absence of oxygen was guaranteed to damage his health. As it did. To the death.

I haven't heard a word that Trump has said about Evans, incidentally.

but if there was anything that could have saved the kid's life it would have been done.

This is self-evidently untrue. As I've said before, sending the child to another state would have cost the NHS exactly zero. There was the possibility of life-saving treatment, and the certainty that the UK wouldn't allow it.

Michelle Dulak Thomson, they took Alfie Evans off life support, expecting him to die without it in a few hours. When he refused to cooperate, they withheld food and water for more than 36 hours. We will never know if he could have been helped in Italy, but they were at least willing to try. That's the exact opposite of the approach taken by his own government, and anybody who says otherwise is either delusional or a liar. And for the record, if Donald Trump even mentioned this case either before or after Alfie Evans passed away, I'm unaware of it. But nothing that he might say either for or against would change my rapidly declining opinion of the British government.

Now it's time for you to listen to me. As I said, I disagreed with the NHS decision. I don't endorse/agree with the NHS system in general. But if you think there's a medical way possible to reverse a brain that became a vegetable, then you might as well be a creationist.

This is self-evidently untrue. As I've said before, sending the child to another state would have cost the NHS exactly zero. There was the possibility of life-saving treatment...

The "possibility" of reversing vegetable-brain is nil. If you want to tend a garden, try that instead. Lots of vegetables you can keep in there - and at zero to little cost. But you need to stop pretending that that's a great reason to kill off a lot of Americans by pricing them out of the insurance market. Only a ninny believes that the kid you're talking about has anything to do with why you should pull the plug on that many Americans. But ACA-haters long since lost any sense of rhyme or reason for what they say. They're stuck in the 2009 Sarah Palin "criticism" and can't update any opinion as to what's actually at stake. You looking to "pull the plug" on CHP kids who need Medicare, too? Sounds like it.

If there is, at all, a rise in White Identity (hateful seems to be a default judgment by liberals) it has more to do with the Left's increase in identity tribalism than with Trump. Trump is the natural result of an identity movement created by the Left to push everyone into tribes based on their ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Whites are the bad guys - the group that the most self-identified groups are eschewing as evil. This forces some white people to feel that they have to choose the tribe they belong to. It's the opposite of the E Pluribus Unum this country was founded on. It's no longer "Out of many, one", it's "Out of one, Many" and it's pitting factions against each other and ripping this country apart. Trump isn't the cause - he's the product of this movement.

Trump isn't a racist and he doesn't say racist things---what he does, which the PC police cannot stand, is tell their targets that you don't have to just roll over and take their insults. Because if the victims of PC ever start talking back and regain some self-confidence, the game is up. THAT is the biggest threat out there.

These days I find myself frequently remembering what Harry Truman said when asked about him "giving 'em hell." He said, "I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."

That's Trump, on this kind of stuff. Yes, he gets small, inconsequential stuff wrong and then doubles down, which feeds the meme that he lies, which is true on trivial things. He does have an ego problem and I think sometimes he hurts himself. But on the big stuff, he often says what others know to be true but haven't dared to say.
