What he did for love: "Maybe Trump did it all for Melania..."

Here's a far-out theory, designed to test the credulity of nearly everyone, by Martha Ross in The Mercury News.

What if Donald Trump just quite simply loves Melania?
Perhaps the 71-year-old Trump was worried his wife Melania would hear these stories and think he had cheated on her.... At least that’s the story Trump reportedly tried to tell Comey in their now heavily scrutinized conversations... With regard to the “pee tape,” Comey wrote in his book: “It bothered (Trump) if there was ‘even a one-percent chance’ his wife, Melania, thought it was true.”...

During a February 8, 2017 conversation in the Oval Office, Comey recounted in one of his memos, Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin boasted that his country “had some of the most beautiful hookers in the world.”

But Trump also said that the “hookers thing is nonsense” and repeatedly told Comey he wanted the FBI to debunk the pee tape claim. His reason? Yes, Trump told Comey in a March 30, 2017 phone conversation that he was concerned that the “golden showers thing” would cast a “cloud” over his presidency. Trump insisted the claim wasn’t true, asking Comey: “Can you imagine me, hookers?”

Comey then writes in his book: “In an apparent play for my sympathy, (Trump) added that he has a beautiful wife and the whole thing has been very painful for her. He asked what we could do to ‘lift the cloud.’ ”...
Other evidence marshaled at the link, but I won't try your patience. Here, let's just have a quick vote:

Was it love for Melania that brought on Trump's troubles?

The fact that the media and the left is so excited about this story shows the hate level is off the scale.

At least there is actual evidence that makes it a plausible theory -- Comey, who has positioned himself as adversarial, actually admits Trump said that was his concern.

More evidence of this than all the other theories floated by most news outlets these days.

It's complicated

I've no doubt that most Trump haters assume she's nothing more than a trophy wife, a thing to show off matching Trump's renowned ostentatious sensibilities along with his big buildings, big planes, and gaudy decor. But the haters would never grant that he could have actual real love for her.

But you shouldn't always assume the worst of those you hate, it shows a lack of imagination.

Ken B said...

Huh? Brought on Trump troubles has NOTHING to do with her theory. Her theory is about why Trump would care about that particular lie.

If Trump was guilty of that then why would he want Comey to investigate it? Common sense people, think about it.

What a weird question; "Was it love for Melania that brought on Trump's troubles?"

What are "Trump's troubles"? Wire fraud? Conspiracy? Campaign finance violations? If it turns out that "Trump's troubles" were some federal crimes involving real estate deals, loans from Russian banks, conspiracy with Russian agents, are any of those related to "love for Melania"?

Wasn't there a rumor that Melania was furious at Trump for deciding to run for President?

I don't even care how those questions are answered, or how anybody feels about Trump personally.

And Florence: I do not believe that anybody ever took the position that Trump had verbalized the notion that he needed to disprove the Russian dossier because he loved Melania. According to Comey, Trump was simply worried that Melania might think it was true. (Causing Comey to wonder, Wow, does she have some reason to think it MIGHT be true? Does she have some basis for not dismissing it out of hand?) Comey never reported Trump saying that he loved Melania and he wanted to avoid any injury to her.

You see, Trump might just not want Melania to know some things, for his own narcissistic purposes. Trump might not want Melania to know that he was having unprotected sex with a porn star in Lake Tahoe, for his own benefit. And Trump might not want Melania to know that he was falling in love with a Playmate. Neither of which telegraphs any notion of love for Melania.

With the utter and complete collapse of LLR Chuck's fever dreams of obstruction of justice, fake collusion, the hoax dossier, and all the other "Scandals that will END Trump once and for all!", all that remains, and all that will ever remain, is the snide colbert-like sniping from the sidelines for LLR Chuck.

Welcome to your perpetual narrative future Chuck!

Not even binge-watching Maddow with tubs of ice cream is going to be enough to salvage what's left of you!

I do believe Trump loves Melania. Age and three marriages tend to focus the mind on legacy.

But like many prominent people, at times he probably loves himself as much if not more, as is the case with not-so-prominent people.

Wasn't the Stormy stuff alleged to have taken place toward the end of Melania's pregnancy?

Maybe Trump thought that was a discreet way of taking care of "his needs" for the time being with no strings attached?

Beloved Commenter AReasonableMan said...

This is my default hypothesis, assuming no solid evidence for collusion ever gets discovered.

If Don Jr had not been so keen to collude and some of the Trump campaign individuals not so shady this would have been a much stronger default position.

The hookers, while she was pregnant, were an appalling betrayal of his marriage, so I would guess he was highly motivated to keep things underwrap.

It is the template that best fits the facts. Remember- this Comey telling you the "facts"- almost a statement against interest from Comey point of view, so I believe Trump probably expressed exactly that sentiment.

It has been simply hilarious watching the Left try to make something out of Trump asking Comey to prove the Golden Showers bit to be untrue. Common sense would argue that this shows the allegation was pure lies.

Drago said...

ARM: "This is my default hypothesis, assuming no solid evidence for collusion ever gets discovered."

Nice try.

There is no evidence of collusion on the part of Trump.

Zero.

Solid or otherwise.

There is, however, and I don't care how mad this will make LLR Chuck for my mentioning it, solid and admitted and documented evidence that Hillary and the DNC worked secretly through a law firm to contract with an oppo research firm to hire a foreign agent to work directly with Putin cronies to gather fake oppo research to inject into our election and national security/law enforcement processes against a domestic political opponent.

And again, I don't care how mad LLR Chuck gets at my mentioning that.

Florence said...

Chuck, in your haste to get another swipe in at Trump, you failed to actually read what I wrote.

There is more evidence from Comey's memos that Trump loves (cares, has concern for, etc.) Melania than there is evidence that he colluded with Russians to steal an election.

Drago said...

"Maybe we can get Chuck a comfort tortoise?"

LLR Chuck is sitting there in MI, banging on his keyboard and wondering how all his many hours, days, weeks and months of work carefully cultivating what he thought was a powerful and persuasive online persona have gone to waste.

And then, after pondering that, and perhaps after imbibing a bit too much, he then launches screed after screed exposing what a very little fellow he actually is....which only upsets him more and the downward spiral continues.

A cautionary tale indeed.

What a bunch of lying women! Not only that, but she thinks the whole thing is funny! One of the funniest things: Grab em by the pussy! Another thing: paying $130,000 to Stormy: No way Trump did that! But let's both remember that on our side, actors like Judicial Watch have pressed claims in litigation that were not successful in getting the relief requested, but they turned up stuff in the course of discovery that had effects far more important than any relief buried away in a court file.

Oh, in fairness to Althouse, I don't presume that to be her thinking at all. I think Althouse regards Trump as a rascal and an adulterer, but that it doesn't matter to (the core of) Trump voters, and furthermore, personal morality is so fluid and so essentially private in these kinds of matters, that it is not worth discussing. For Althouse, Trump's moral failings were built into the election. There's been nothing new or dispositive on that front, is what I presume Althouse is thinking.

Which is why I always come back to Trump's lying, and Trump's possible violations of the law.

None of which could ever matter to Scott "I no longer care about the fucking law" Adams.

This is one motivation but the other is to change the calculus vis a vis Mueller. Better Mueller providing a clean bill of health at the end of his investigation than giving the DNC free reign by sacking Mueller.

Michael K said...

"It's because you, like your GOPe masters, are a eunuch. Little do nothing fuckwads. "

Even Rich Lowry sees it.

Republicans are content not to do anything of significance in Congress this year.
If Republicans aren’t losing their congressional majority this coming fall, they are doing a good job of acting like it.

Dozens of Republicans are leaving the House, and last week Paul Ryan said he is resigning as House speaker at the end of this Congress, and will not even run for his congressional seat again.

If the high-water mark of Republican power came on the day last December that congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump celebrated the passage of the tax bill on the White House lawn, Ryan’s announcement is a clear sign that Republican clout is receding.

In a gift for the ages, Republicans won all elected branches of the federal government in 2016. But the initial ecstasy over Trump “signing their stuff” has given way to the reality that they don’t have stuff to send him.

Republicans couldn’t roll back Obamacare, in part because the party hadn’t thought through what the Republican alternative was.

They passed a tax cut that included important reforms that even the Democratic repeal bills don’t want to completely undo and that are boosting the economy.

That’s all to the good. But tax cuts aren’t a magic political elixir. First, Trump is right, as he said at an event a couple of weeks ago when he tossed away his script, that they are boring. They don’t have the emotive appeal of issues like trade and immigration. Second, there are limits to how effectively you can run on the one thing you accomplished last year.

This is the truly extraordinary aspect of the current situation. Republicans are content not to do anything else of significance in Congress this year. They passed an omnibus spending bill that was rightly denounced as a disgrace by Trump even as he signed it, and the Senate is working to confirm Trump nominees. That’s pretty much it.

They don't deserve to be re-elected but letting the Dims take the House would let loose insanity for two years.

Yes. He has a history, a track record, and no doubt she "knew" him pretty darn well before marriage. Neither were inexperienced in any way.

I suspect the relationship is on the lines of that of a Chinese or Siamese or Ottoman monarch, with an official wife (or not-officially-married official consort, as the Ottomans usually had it), and any number of concubines, or whatever, as required.

Historically monarchs and aristocrats had little interest in bourgeois morality.

This “don’t want me wife to find out and get hurt” is why Cohen’s payoffs will never result in silly campaign finance “criminal charges” much less a conviction. The purpose was to keep it from Trump’s wife not the American public. A personal motive means it wasn’t an expenditure on behalf of the campaign.

If Trump were ever charged, Comey would be the first defense witness. “Mr. Comey, President Trump told you he didn’t want to see his wife in pain over the allegations about sex with hookers, correct?”

All the shit Trump said during the campaign shows he doesn’t care what the public thinks about him personally or his personal life.

That’s why this FBI raid is terrible. It’s a bullshit “crime” in the first place, not worth raiding the home and office of the President’s personal lawyer.

But these fucking imbeciles in the FBI and DOJ can’t get a high profile conviction.

In the last few months, both Sen Menendez and The Bride of the Pulse Jihadi walked.

Sen. Stevens and Sen. Edwards walked. Gov. McDonnell walked. Roger Clemens walked. And, of course, the MLB all-time base on balls leader, Barry Bonds, walked.

Add to that how thoroughly the FBI fucked up the Anthrax investigation, and you have a decade of high-profile citizens wiping the floor with the FBI and DOJ.

They are a fucking embarrassment.
