The canonization of teenagers.

I feel as though, because children were murdered, I shouldn't be expressing shock at bad taste, but I don't think it's just aesthetics that I find so troubling....

You can read the article here. Excerpt:
[L]ifting her eyes and staring into the distance before her, González stood in silence. Inhaling and exhaling deeply—the microphone caught the susurration, like waves lapping a shoreline—González’s face was stoic, tragic. Her expression shifted only minutely, but each shift—her nostrils flaring, or her eyelids batting tightly closed—registered vast emotion. Tears rolled down her cheeks; she did not wipe them away.....

In its restraint, its symbolism, and its palpable emotion, González’s silence was a remarkable piece of political expression. Her appearance also offered an uncanny echo of one of the most indelible performances in the history of cinema: that of Renée Maria Falconetti, who starred in Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic silent film from 1928, “The Passion of Joan of Arc.”... Falconetti, who never made another movie, gives an extraordinary performance, her face registering at different moments rapture, fear, defiance, and transcendence... [W]hen Joan knows that she is to be martyred, Dreyer’s camera lingers on closeups of Falconetti, with her brutally close-cropped hair, her rough garments, and her anguished silence. Her extraordinary image in that sequence could be intercut almost seamlessly with footage from Saturday’s rally....

Our potential saviors gleam all the more brightly against the pervasive political and civic darkness of the moment.
I become very uneasy when politics looks like religion.

The word "passion" in "The Passion of Joan of Arc" is based on the meaning "The sufferings of Jesus in the last days of his life, from the Last Supper to his death; the Crucifixion itself" which has been extended to "The sufferings of a martyr, martyrdom" (OED). Joan of Arc was martyred, killed because of her adherence to Christianity.

Should the suffering of someone who was shot — or who huddled in fear of getting shot — by an evil/insane gunman be called The Passion? The closeups of Falconetti and paintings of the Crucifixion reinforce religious faith. If you engage with these images, you experience vicarious suffering, and perhaps you feel you should — you do — believe what was so important to them that they died like that.

But a child in a school shooting has no internal beliefs that brought her to the place where she is suffering. No opponent of her beliefs is putting her to the test. And she would gladly run away if she could. Yes, González made a powerful demonstration of how terrible it is to be caught in a school shooting. But it would be a mistake to take the idea of that suffering and merge it with beliefs that we ought to adopt because of that suffering. The policy proposals of gun control are not the equivalent of the Christian religion. The children happened to be caught, horribly, in a very bad place, but that was happenstance, not because of their belief in gun control.

"I become very uneasy when politics looks like religion."

Politics has always been connected to religion, to the point there really is little distinction historically. The decoupling of religion from politics in the Constitution assumed there was a substantive religious structure that would provide moral orientation for society. With the dissolution of religion as a social priority, indeed the rejection of religion as even a social voice, politics reverts to its comprehensive historical expression.

Politics now has taken the place of religion in a great many people, leaving the establishment clause narrowly applied to fight the new heresies. The only religion allowed is the religion of politics, with its own saints and clerics and dogmas.

Emma Gonzalez bullied Nikolas Cruz

“Since he was in middle school, it was no surprise to anyone who knew him, that he was the shooter. Those talking about how we should have not ostracized him? You didn’t know this kid! OK? We did!”

Marolo Alvarez remembers students taunting Nikolas Cruz.

“He looked like a school shooter,” Alvarez said students used to say about him.

… Alvarez, who spoke to reporters at a vigil for victims of the area’s second mass shooting in 13 months, said he wishes he had said something earlier. “I could have said something to administrators, that ‘hey this kid gets bullied a lot, please help him, please reach out to him.’ I kind of regret not doing that,” Alvarez said.

No, the proposals aren't, but the ideology behind those proposals most certainly is. That ideology has always seen itself as a replacement for all the faiths, most especially, Christianity. It starts with Bruno Bauer of the Young Hegelians, then to Feuerbach (also a YH, who really gives the idea shape), then into Marx, from where it infects all aspect of Marxist & post-Marxist Leftist thought.

The Soviets were very explicit in taking over iconography & ritual from Orthodox Christianity & incorporating them into state actions.

Eyelids flaring and nostrils batting - I hope she's not crazy like Joan was.

From the age of thirteen, Joan of Arc experienced frequent episodes of auditory and visual hallucinations. Did she suffer from epilepsy?

"One of the many hypotheses, which have been circulating, was that Joan of Arc suffered from a psychiatric illness, especially schizophrenia.
...
In a recent article, two neurologists claim that the semiology of the episodes is more suggestive of epileptic seizures, which have been considered as ecstatic by some authors or as partial epilepsy with auditory features by others."

Very good points, Paddy.

"Secularization" works nicely for a while, in stable and prosperous societies where there is still a strong enough shared, if now tacit, "religious" foundation.

But it inevitably deteriorates into (or, rather, reverts to) rival identitarian factions (aka religions, religious sects) -- the very things secularism is supposed to prevent or control.

Those reports are all being withdrawn and corrected. He was at the school when the shooting started, and heard the shots, and sheltered in place with other students until they were escorted off campus. He came back later on his bike to interview people standing around the outside of the police perimeter of the scene.

She is plain, at best. A brute really. Dysfunction is written all over her face, or, at least, her scalp.

None of that is relevant to the fact that her ideas are hot garbage, unless dysfunctional people are more likely to have bad ideas. But nobody cares about that, so yes, in that sense, her unattractiveness is relevant. (That Hogg kid is also no dreamboat to me, but opinions differ.)

I wonder, if you shot at them again and again, how many of them would finally wise up and want guns of their own.

Faith, religion, and tradition are separable concepts and practices. Religion or moral philosophy, is similar to law, in that it describes and prescribes a behavioral protocol. So, we have replaced one form of religion with another, progressive/oppressive religion under an ostensibly secular umbrella. The hangup for many people is the author (e.g. philosopher, God) of the principles, which causes them to judge a philosophy based, not on its content, but rather its "color".

Think of how all the adults will regret the mean things they said to me after I die. Gonzalez gets to do Twain one better. She delivers the eulogy at the funeral and gets to blame the death on the people she doesn't like........There's a kind of glamour to these school shootings. Young people like to think that society mistreats them, and that these shootings dramatize their plight and martyrdom. You can reliably depend on the media to backlight them, publish their most attractive photos, and uncritically accept their histrionic statements........All this glamour doesn't really advance the cause of gun control so much as it does the probability of the next school shooting. The glamour doesn't just attract photogenic eulogists. It attracts the loose filings and the kid who has a different fantasy of how to get even with the people who treat him badly.

She was convicted at a rigged trial, held in flagrant breach of canon law and accepted legal procedures, of heresy - for cross dressing. She was not executed for being a Christian. Following the trial, appeals to the Pope were denied. In the 1450s the trial was subjected to proper scrutiny, Joan was declared innocent and a martyr. The cross dressing charge was because she had dressed as a man on occasion. This was undisputed. Cross dressing was potentially heretical, but could be justified by necessity, of which there was plenty. certainly enough to satisfy the trial in the 1450s.

Quite so. There are a LOT of Democrats who also own guns for hunting and protection purposes who do not want to have their Constitutional rights and their freedoms taken away. It is a key issue that would cause Democrats to vote for their interests and against the gun control/gun seizing liberal left.

Blacks, who understand their own history, know that the original gun control laws were meant to KEEP black people from owning guns. The Racist History of Gun Control In America from MTV

Ida B. Wells, an African-American journalist and civil rights activist, wrote in a pamphlet entitled "Southern Horrors":

The lesson this teaches and which every Afro-American should ponder well, is that a Winchester rifle should have a place of honor in every black home, and it should be used for that protection which the law refuses to give. When the white man who is always the aggressor knows he runs as great a risk of biting the dust every time his Afro-American victim does, he will have greater respect for Afro-American life. The more the Afro-American yields and cringes and begs, the more he has to do so, the more he is insulted, outraged and lynched.

Thinking that gun control is only a Republican issue is very shortsighted.

Inga believes that a few years from now all these children will vote the way a tiny minority that the media have blown up into, what? Icons? Secular saints? Inga, my dear, if you polled all teenagers you’d almost certainly have a plain majority in favor of gun ownership and Second Amendment rights. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a high fraction, in the fortieth percentile st least, of Parkland in favor of gun rights.

There were so many ways the tragedy could have been avoided. If other kids hadn’t bullied Cruz. (Was Gonzalez one of the bullies? Is that why she’s so passionate about blaming gun owners?) The FBI received a warning that some with the online handle “ nikolas cruz” was commenting on a YouTube video about wanting to be a school shooter. The FBI did nothing. Yet a five minute search would have turned up a real Nikolas Cruz with a troubling history, and ten minutes or so after that they could have discovered that the nikolas cruz who posted a comment on YouTube had the same MAC address as the Nikolas Cruz who owned an AR 15. TV detectives would call that “a clue.” But a clue is what the FBI after the leadership of Mueller and Comey did not have.

The FBI says “protocols were not followed.” Damn those protocols! Don’t they know they’re supposed to be followed?!?

Cruz was evaluated by mental health professionals about five years ago and determined to not be a threat to himself or others. Ha! Got that wrong. But not to worry; they won’t be reprimanded, or fired, or sued. Perish the thought that anyone other than the NRA could be at fault.

The Sheriff’s deputies on the scene. Did they do their jobs? Standard school shooter protocols manifestly were not followed. Oh, there’s those pesky protocols again!

It’s not my fault that so many educators, law enforcement professionals, and mental health professionals did not do their jobs. Gonzalez wants to live in a world where they’re off the hook. Grown ups are more knowledgable.

Indeed. Especially since their beloved State murders people so readily (and estimated 150,000,000 to 350,000,000 in the past hundred years alone). You think the Jugend will express any outrage or horror over those figures, or keep pushing to give Big Brother even more power?

First of all, your new profile picture just rocks. Absolutely rocks. Love it. Mysterious, coy, playful.

Second, the political power these youth have is that of a club that can be used to bash or a tool that can be used to pry. That is, no inherent power, just a capability to be used that multiplies others' power.

And like a club or a tool, to be discarded when no longer useful.

Not sure that is going to change when they get to vote. Perhaps these youth, with time and cunning, can amass some independent power, but guile is not something youth have in abundance.

buwaya said...

"Nice little cuck politely asking permission while decrying someone who takes direct action. "

The trouble here is that "taking action" in this case (anti-immigration) will certainly lead to professional destruction and the inability to earn a living, hence being unable to fulfill responsibilities re family and children. And it may well harm the childrens careers as well.

Its exactly the same sort of sanction on dissent with which they maintained control in East Germany or Czechoslovakia. It required considerable courage to be a dissenter, a la Vaclav Havel, who could not hold a job for 20 years.

The only people that can take action are the untouchable, the independently wealthy or the absolutely indigent, with no family or other responsibilities. Or those who are attached to political funders on the other side, but there are few slots, and then you are under another sort of thumb.

To be on the left side requires no courage at all, as there is no possibility of sanctions.

This really isn't a free society.

Counterfactuals are hard to prove, but its an easy guess these kids aren't doing anything they wouldn't have done given a microphone and a platform at any time in their young adult lives. They have the opinions that CNN wanted on air, so they were put on air. That isn't leadership on their part. Other kids with other opinions weren't chosen.

The Joan of Arc thing is gross, though. Someoene's developed a fervent crush on this girl, and they should have thought twice before writing it so blatantly in the New Yorker.

Since invited, lets compare

Risk level
Joan of arc - 100%, burned at the stake
Emma of FL - 0%, tons of free TV, applause, and a career in publicity

Goal
Joan of arc - religious freedom
Emma of FL - elimination of freedom, continuing to advance liberal/PC control once they show the 2nd amendment is on the table, why not limit the 1st to create "safe space" for the unprivileged?

Something the right-wing can't hear often enough - given how much they ignore it.

But it would be a mistake to take the idea of that suffering and merge it with beliefs that we ought to adopt because of that suffering.

Only if you think inaction is warranted or that these kids should be consigned to always being at risk for such "suffering."

The policy proposals of gun control are not the equivalent of the Christian religion. The children happened to be caught, horribly, in a very bad place, but that was happenstance, not because of their belief in gun control.

It wasn't happenstance. It's predictably going to occur in our country and more often in the states that are represented by shills who take as much as regularly from the gun manufacturer's lobby (NRA) as Florida's do.

What a sick and inhuman thing to say.

As far as I'm concerned, these sentiments essentially enable the mass shootings. It's possible to enable mass shootings by going into the voting booth and rewarding politicians that are in hock to the gun manufacturer's lobby (NRA).

And then there are sentiments like these that in a very callous and sociopathic fashion essentially reveal that the speaker really does care more about their guns and the paranoia that stimulates their purchase than about the very lives taken by them.

It's sick beyond measure. A society (and nation) cannot survive when it is just run by the sociopaths. People will either learn to care about each other and their lives and well-beings or the maniacal paranoids like DBQ will keep marching us further down into a descent of detached and debased mass sociopathy and the end of the nation.

Heck, just yesterday a Democrat candidate for Sheriff promised to start shooting gun owners if elected... to the loud and rabid cheers of his audience.

How can we be "paranoid" when the left is constantly telling us how they want to kill us and round us up and execute us? Even here at Althouse we only had one--one!--leftist poster that expressed any sort of sadness or remorse over the Steve Scalise shooting which was conducted by a leftist for political purposes. Only one leftist poster here could bring themselves to say that shooting political opponents was a bad idea. And that poster has now left, but the ones like TTR who cheered it are still here calling us paranoid for noticing the left's massive gulag/Auschwitz fantasy they preach every day.

You call us paranoid? Please--every day you vicious leftist thugs loudly proclaim your intent to murder tens of millions of Americans. And then you are upset that said intended victims don't want to disarm.

And now you have proclaimed one of the very bullies that drove the Parkland shooter to his activities--you are in the process of canonizing one of the root causes of a school shooting.

By the way--isn't it ironic yet completely not surprising that many of these "Stop violence in schools!" protestors went and attacked, beat, assaulted, or otherwise inflicted violence on people who didn't agree with their "Confiscate all guns and jail everyone who's ever fired a weapon!" platform?

Let the government face you (and every other one of the 100 million gun owners) down in as many battlefields of your choosing while it takes out its MOABs, F35s, ICBMs and every other component of its arsenal and we'll see who's keeping whom "free."

And BTW, if it's your disorganized militia-in-waiting that's really keeping us free and not all these service members of the standing armies and forces we've assembled then there's no need for any of them to go to Iraq or Afghanistan for several tours, return home, and request thanks for "keeping us free." Another teenager who was not at the anti-gun rally,

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by The Palm Beach County police, 17-year-old Corey Johnson bought a knife last Sunday and brought it with him to a sleepover at longtime friend Kyle Bancroft’s house. At 4 a.m., he decided to kill Kyle’s mother, Elaine, his brother, Dane, and Dane’s friend, Jovanni Sierra Brand.

Johnson repeatedly stabbed Jovanni in his bed and slit his throat. Then he attempted to murder Elaine as she approached the boys’ bedrooms in response to Jio’s last gasps. Dane rescued his mom and sustained 32 stab wounds. Both were hospitalized and survived. Jio was buried last Friday — less than a week after celebrating his 13th birthday at a pizza party attended by Johnson.

Motove? Oh yes.

The accused killer told police he “stabbed the victims because of his Muslim faith,” watched videos of “Muslim jihadists” on his cellphone, and “was reading the Quran from his phone just prior to the attack to give him courage to carry out his intentions.”…

Not preventable ? Bolt out of the blue ?

In middle school, Johnson had reportedly stalked a student and sexually harassed her. She told school police. Nothing happened. He dabbled in white supremacy, anti-Semitism and gay-bashing, and then immersed himself in radical Islam — rising at 5 a.m. daily to pray and revere the Syrian flag. Johnson’s online jihad agitation, physical abuse and addiction to ISIS beheading videos prompted his sister in 2016 to confide in a school therapist, who contacted the local sheriff’s office.

Johnson’s mom, the sister told school officials, was in denial. The sister so feared for her life she slept with a knife under her bed.

Too bad he missed the rally in DC,.

Politics has always been connected to religion, to the point there really is little distinction historically.

Jesus is the one who made the distinction. He was profoundly apolitical, in my opinion. The only authorities he bothers to speak to are religious authorities.

I think the call to non-violence is a specific Christian doctrine. It inspired both Gandhi and King.

On the other hand, going to the center of government to protest is not a Christian doctrine. The government keeps its power through violence and implicit violence. This is why governments have armies, and police.

Liberals who believe in non-violence should never call 911. And they should never hide away from street thugs and other violent actors. I think there's an implicit hypocrisy here. "I want the armed soldiers of the government to disarm other people for my own safety." Not a Christian concept at all. Christ calls on us to be non-violent, yes. But he also calls on us to confront evil and have no concern for our own safety. It's a radical concept, which is why many Christians believe violence is okay if sanctified by the government. But Christ never actually said that.

Joan of Arc was clearly schizophrenic. She claimed (probably truthfully) that she was hearing voices telling her what to do.

Today, those people are prescribed antipsychotic medications. They're patients, not saints.

I don't know how the Catholic Church can explain canonizing Joan of Arc to today's generation who know that mental illness is treatable.

Is there any way that the Catholic Church can retract its canonization of this mentally ill person?

From today's perspective, all these claims of all these religious figures from the Bible onward that they heard voices or saw visions should be taken with a grain of salt:

Ezekiel, Paul the Apostle, Joan of Arc, etc.

Today, we know that hearing voices or seeing visions have actual scientific-medical causes like epilepsy or schizophrenia. No religious explanations are required.

The man disappeared and when found by Sam was living essentially an identical life to that which he had abandoned. His job, wife, house, car were very like those he had in his earlier life. Sam finds out that the man was traumatized one day when a building girder falling from a construction site nearly hit him. If life was that unpredictable, what sense did it make to keep living it as he was? He decamped, leaving everything behind. After a few years, when building girders did not continue falling out of the sky at him, he settled down into a life like that he'd left.

One can be upset by any number of things, but people will revert to the norm of their existences if given an opportunity. This is why the Children's Crusade, organized by the antigun politicians and activists, should be shamed for their use and abuse of these poor traumatized kids.

No one does what she did without a lot of training. Fake.
