"Senator Al Franken Kissed and Groped Me Without My Consent, And There’s Nothing Funny About It."

"In December of 2006, I embarked on my ninth USO Tour to entertain our troops, my eighth to the Middle East since the 9/11 attacks," writes Leeann Tweeden, a morning news anchor on TalkRadio 790 KABC in Los Angeles, writing on the TalkRadio 790 KABC website.
When I saw the script, Franken had written a moment when his character comes at me for a ‘kiss’... On the day of the show Franken... said to me, “We need to rehearse the kiss.” I laughed and ignored him... He continued to insist, and I was beginning to get uncomfortable....  I said ‘OK’ so he would stop badgering me. We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth. I immediately pushed him away with both of my hands against his chest and told him if he ever did that to me again I wouldn’t be so nice about it the next time....

Not long after, I performed the skit as written, carefully turning my head so he couldn’t kiss me on the lips. No one saw what happened backstage. I didn’t tell the Sergeant Major of the Army, who was the sponsor of the tour. I didn’t tell our USO rep what happened. At the time I didn’t want to cause trouble.... Other than our dialogue on stage, I never had a voluntary conversation with Al Franken again....

It wasn’t until I was back in the US and looking through the CD of photos we were given by the photographer that I saw this one:

I couldn’t believe it. He groped me, without my consent, while I was asleep....

A few weeks ago, we had California Congresswoman Jackie Speier on the show and she told us her story of being sexually assaulted when she was a young Congressional aide. She described how a powerful man in the office where she worked ‘held her face, kissed her and stuck his tongue in her mouth.’

At that moment, I thought to myself, Al Franken did that exact same thing to me....
ADDED: "In the New York Magazine article, dated March 13, 1995, entitled 'Comedy Isn't Funny: Saturday Night Live At Twenty--How The Show That Transformed TV Became A Grim Joke'...."
Franken: And, "I give the pills to Lesley Stahl. Then, when Lesley's passed out, I take her to the closet and rape her." Or, "That's why you never see Lesley until February." Or, "When she passes out, I put her in various positions and take pictures of her."
AND: Here's how Franken talked about Trump's "Access Hollywood" tape:

Franken came from the entertainment community where a libertine lifestyle is considered not just normal, but desirable. He looked down on the squares who tried to live by traditional moral standards. He assumed that someone who had posed for Playboy shared his views on sexual morality. That was an understandable assumption. His error was not accepting 'no' as an answer.

He will be gone by the end of the day.

Democrats don't want anything to distract from Roy Moore.

Then again, the Menendez trial is wrapping up too. If he is guilty, another distraction.

The big difference here is the photograph. It's not one person's story capable of denial by another.

But there could be other explanations for the photo. We'll see what he says.

But if he has an exculpating explanation, it will cut against the current pressure to believe what women are saying, and he needs to be on that side politically, so it seems that he is ruined. What can he do?

Norm MacDonald said that before he got the Weekend Update slot on SNL, Franken used to pester Lorne Michaels for the position. Norm pretty much stole it from Franken with his whole not-giving-a-f#%@ attitude. Franken always seemed like a weenie to me.

Franken not only thought that groping an unconscious woman was a good idea, but that posing for posterity while groping an unconscious woman was a thrilling achievement. His gaiety can been seen on his face, with wide-open eyes, and a grin that stretches from cheek to cheek.

Bay Area Guy said...

Franken was a high school wrestler, so he's kinda got that gropey gene or something.

I disagree with this whole expulsion thing.

It's one thing if there are criminal acts. It's another thing if the voters know about something and elect you anyway. It's a third thing if you're elected and then information comes out that the voters didn't know about.

Excluding criminal acts.

If the voters know and elect you anyway, the Senate shouldn't expel them.

Except she's not letting Franken touch her. Trump's defense was that the women he was talking about consented to his acts. It's the equivalent of "and then she took off her clothes and was standing in front of me, completely naked!"

Not something you discuss in polite company, but not something which is abnormal or illegal in any way.

Thus, "locker room talk".

Ken B said...

I think the not even touching her gear defense is very exculpatory. The joke is then not, look what I can do to her, but look what a horndog I am. The latter is self directed and not about how she is humiliated.

Moreover, we do not know if this was the ONLY image exposed in this sequence; whether this was taken BEFORE contact or maybe AFTER contact.

CStanley said...

@Matthew Sablan, I could be persuaded to see it your way. I think it depends on how much he really harassed her the rest of the trip. Otherwise it's very borderline to me, whether it should be left in the realm of what women and men should work out between themselves. I think if I'd been put in her position I might have said something to try to shame him right after the kiss (like, "Dude, are you that hard up that you have to script your sex life in order to get any action?") And then made it clear that I would refuse to do the skit and would inform USO officials of the reason if he didn't back off.

The solution to all the hypocrisy is that this sexual stuff isn't actually important. It's a women's issue, and they're an audience.

I'm not saying that. Grabbing someone through a thick jacket, or the heavy wool sweater Curious George suggests, is actual assault. Franken in the picture is being a disrespectful asshole, which I already thought he was. Pace AllenS I don't think it's OK, and I agree with your 11:15 comment. Pretending to assault her while others laugh is disgusting, so I regret implying she's wrong to be outraged.

I just think to qualify as actual groping you have to be able to feel (at all) what you're groping, as opposed to an unyielding hard surface that doesn't change shape at all to fit the wearer. He'd have felt the same thing if he'd groped a vest with no person inside it.

Now Drudge, who is gay himself, is just being mean. Imagine linking to this:

He recalled writing a skit called "Seamen on Broadway" that was rejected from the Hasty Pudding show "by some preppie so they could take some other preppie's skit." Franken started to smile again, but his tone was serious, too serious. "It's not preppies, cause I'm a preppie myself. I just don't like homosexuals. If you ask me, they're all homosexuals in the Pudding. Hey, I was glad when that Pudding homosexual got killed in Philadelphia." The smile became so broad it pushed his eyes shut. He couldn't stand it any longer. "Put that in, put that in," Franken laughed, leaning over the desk. "I'd love to see that in The Crimson."

Thanks Matt. I do appreciate your help in taking Franken, or, really, any senator of either party down.

Today's talking points: "Franken is so ugly that he can't get a woman to go out with him. He has to grope them while sleeping. He also fantasizes about drugging and raping celebrities." Yeah, just the kind of guy we need in the senate.

Franken thought it was a good idea, clearly. Alinsky rule: Hold them to their own standards of behavior, which they will not be able to live up to.

She writes in her statement that she wanted to turn away at the last minute, reject him in front of an audience, and get some laughs at his expense.

How bad the photographed behavior is depends greatly on Ms. Tweeden's story of what happened beforehand, in my opinion. And those who claim a "gap" between the hands and Ms. Tweeden's jacket are missing that point in one respect and forgetting something else- that is a still, not a video.

John henry said...

And of course the non-apology apology.

He is also calling for an ethics committee of himself. Sorry, Al, McConnell already beat you to that. Too late but a nice try.

“The first thing I want to do is apologize: to Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women. There's more I want to say, but the first and most important thing—and if it's the only thing you care to hear, that's fine—is: I'm sorry.

“I respect women. I don't respect men who don't. And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed.

“But I want to say something else, too. Over the last few months, all of us—including and especially men who respect women—have been forced to take a good, hard look at our own actions and think (perhaps, shamefully, for the first time) about how those actions have affected women.

“For instance, that picture. I don't know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn't matter. There's no excuse. I look at it now and I feel disgusted with myself. It isn't funny. It's completely inappropriate. It's obvious how Leeann would feel violated by that picture. And, what's more, I can see how millions of other women would feel violated by it—women who have had similar experiences in their own lives, women who fear having those experiences, women who look up to me, women who have counted on me.

“Coming from the world of comedy, I've told and written a lot of jokes that I once thought were funny but later came to realize were just plain offensive. But the intentions behind my actions aren't the point at all. It's the impact these jokes had on others that matters. And I'm sorry it's taken me so long to come to terms with that.

“While I don't remember the rehearsal for the skit as Leeann does, I understand why we need to listen to and believe women’s experiences.

“I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.

“And the truth is, what people think of me in light of this is far less important than what people think of women who continue to come forward to tell their stories. They deserve to be heard, and believed. And they deserve to know that I am their ally and supporter. I have let them down and am committed to making it up to them.”

Next, we will hear how, now that he has realized what an asshole he is, he must stay in the senate to protect other women from other assholes like himself.

What was interesting about Franken's statement is this- he didn't dispute the rest of the story Ms. Tweeden told. I don't see this as humor- I see this as Franken deliberately insulting her because he was angry.

When she says he groped her the only evidence is this photo. Right? Is that right? This is the only evidence. It does not prove what you assert. So suddenly you speculate about non existent evidence.

This humorous. The more that the Dems and their MSM enablers push the meme that maybe he didn’t actually touch her, the more that people are going to want to see for themselves. And it isn’t really clear that the one hand isn’t touching her. So we have a debate going on - did he actually touch her breast area while she was sleeping or just joke about it? Not sure if we will ever know. But, I don’t see him running for a third term - because I expect that running that photo would be just too obvious by the Republicans asking “Do you really want this sick pervert representing you?” They apparently don’t care about this level of degeneracy in places like MA, that gave Ted Kennedy life tenure in the Senate, but MN is different. I don’t think that this sort of thing will fly there. We shall see.

She says that after Franken assaulted her (allegedly), she had to go on stage with him throughout the tour and play nice, as well as having to sit next to him to sign autographs.
