"Harvey Weinstein Fired From The Weinstein Company."

The Wrap reports.

Internally, Weinstein continued to fight for his survival, insiders have told TheWrap. His advisors — including his brother Bob — told him that he needed to take the allegations seriously and not merely pay lip service. They wanted him to leave for six months and get treatment for sex addiction or whatever his unacceptable behavior would be designated.

Weinstein told TheWrap in an interview on Thursday that he was sincere in his apology and intention to make amends. But reports continued to leak out of the company that the CEO was determined to dictate the terms of his leave of absence and treatment.

The board became increasingly concerned about the company’s survival and were in the midst of negotiating a deal on Saturday and Sunday for Weinstein to resign. That deal apparently fell apart on Sunday, and the board issued the termination notice, bringing an extraordinary end to the career of one of Hollywood’s most powerful moguls....

Fiduciary Duty? That gets their full attention and respect! Their own funds are now on the line (after the D&O insurance runs out, at least.)

It would appear this was an anti-climactic decision to everybody but ol' Harv.

Weinstein is certainly a miscreant, if for no other reason than that he put private interests above the interests of his investors by the way he made casting decisions. But that does not make Ms Judd for example any the less complicit. Screwing the producer for a part hurts the better actress who loses that part. The city inspector who demands a bribe might be worse than the contractor who pays it to get his bid accepted, but neither is an innocent.

To make amends, Weinstein should be condemned to watch "The English Patient" for eternity. Or once, which seems like an eternity.

crazy that he was able to keep his (certainly) boorish and (possibly) illegal behavior hidden from the board for decades. Good that they are getting out ahead of this scandal and setting a high ethical standard. We can all take a lesson from their swift moral clarity.

Not crazy at all. He used to make money for them, and now he doesn't, so it's fine to stop covering for him.

That's all, really.

...to a nicer guy, for certain. He won’t fade away quietly even if a cottage industry develops around his rehabilitation or whatever they’ll call his cling to power and influence.

Does this mean the pols can keep the money they ask?

It would seem the entire entertainment industry (plus more than a few politicos) knew about this character and his proclivities. It would be an extreme stretch to say the board was unaware of this for 30 years.

IOW, Weinstein despite being outed as Pig and guilty of sexual harassment and sexual assault over almost 17 years was going to be slapped on the wrist, and sent away to pervert school for six months to learn it was wrong.

But he didn't even want that, so the Board fired him.

Do you really think, Hollyweird won't take Harvey Pervstein back in six months, and declare all is forgiven? Clinton was impeached and then issued the Marc Rich pardon - but was forgiven.

Its not Weinstein did anything unforgivable, like vote Republican.

Breezy said...

Some wrongs take a while to make right, or just less wrong. I bet Harvey never imagined he’d be the main character in one of his productions!

FWIW, according to TheRichest.com, Tyler Perry is worth $400 million, while Harvey Weinstein is only worth $150 million. Draw your own conclusions.

Sam's Hideout said...

Is he really "one of Hollywood’s most powerful moguls...."? The Weinstein Company has less than half a percent of US film market share in 2016. In the late 1990s, at Miramax (owned by Disney) he couldn't get permission from Disney head honcho Eisner to go into production for a two movie version of The Lord of the Rings, so he let Jackson go to New Line Cinema.

Last time I moseyed on down to the HR department, I was briefed on the Employee Manual, and, there, in black white, section 23.46(c)(4), entitled "Fireable Offenses," it said:

1. Masturbating at office party at rented restaurant, on or near, female employee or guest in hallway.

So, clearly Harvey violated section 23.46(c)(4),

He should be given notice though and an opportunity to be heard.

@ Jay Vogt: I'll set the over/under of board resignations at zero

In yesterday's news (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel): http://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/milwaukee/2017/10/07/bucks-owner-marc-lasry-resigns-weinstein-co-board-state-dems-do-wake-state-dems-donate-campaignretur/742660001/

There was also this in the article: Weinstein is a long-time campaign contributor to Democrats. The Hill said nearly a dozen Democratic senators have said they'll donate cash they received from Weinstein to organizations and causes that provide help to women who have suffered sexual abuse.
On Friday, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin said it will donate $5,000 it received from Weinstein. A spokeswoman said the money will be given "to a group or groups that work with women who are survivors of sexual harassment and abuse here in Wisconsin."

Thanks for that. Wouldn't be the first bet i've lost. My hat is off to them only in that they were savvy enough to act before being transparently craven. I think that savvy is as far as I can go through

Although 16 months on the board may (just may) have been sufficiently short a time to really know what was going down.

I tell you I gotta plead ignorance on this thing because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon, you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices and I tell you people do that all the time.

Ignorance is Bliss said...

Supposedly part of the way that this has been kept quiet is that employees had to sign non-disclosure agreements. I wonder, legally, who could waive those agreements? Would releasing those people from the agreement require Harvey's approval? Or could it be done by the company?

If it could be done by the company, then the company should be pressured to waive the non-disclosures, and let the whole truth come out.

Bay Area Guy said...

Heh - You wish, Prog.

Virgil Hilts said...

The non-disclosures referred to are part of the settlements negotiated with actresses and staff to whom HW presumably showed his potted plant germination technique.
They would typically say (through several paragraphs of legalese) that we're giving you $150K, but if you ever talk to anyone about the underlying allegations (even family members), you have to pay us all the money back.

Bay Area Guy said...

Harvey's schlong might need a separate non-disclosure agreement.

Trivia note: Weinstein's first American film release was a British comedy titled "I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight", that Harvey released over here as "Sex Ray." It featured four sexual assaults in the first fifteen minutes.

William said...

The comedian Louis C.K. Is also in trouble for masturbating in front of a female comedian who was trying to engage him in prooducing her show. Maybe that's some kind of Hollywood thing. Thats how producers mark their territory.

William said...

Maybe somewhere in the Hollywood hills an A-list star is talking to her therapist and telling the therapist that she feels the need to cleanse herself and tell the world all about that incident with Harvey. Harvey's already precarious position in the world depends upon the discretion of some fairly mercurial people......On the plus side, he owns the the rights to the Harvey Weinstein Story. He's already talked to Liam Neeson about starring in the movie.

William said...

There's Fatty Arbuckle and a few others, but, by and large, Hollywood people seem to weather sex scandals fairly well. Even when they don't, Hollywood tries to make amends. Ingrid Bergman was allowed to refurbish her career and reputation. In a couple of years, Liam Neeson will make the movie about how one brave man stood up to the puritans and witch hunters and struck a blow for the liberation of our oppressed souls. The defiant scene where he ejaculates will have a "I am Spartacus" vibe.

YoungHegelian said...

@William,

Actually, Ron Jeremy would be a better choice for the lead.**

**I don't recommend googling "Ron Jeremy" at the office or in front of the family if you don't already know who he is. That is all.

After intense pressure from Weinstein, which included having Matt Damon and Russell Crowe call me directly to vouch for Lombardo and unknown discussions well above my head at the Times, the story was gutted.

I was told at the time that Weinstein had visited the newsroom in person to make his displeasure known. I knew he was a major advertiser in the Times, and that he was a powerful person overall.

But I had the facts, and this was the Times. Right?

Wrong.

Yes. Given how coordinated Hollywood is with the Obama administration and the Hillary campaign this should only be the tip of the iceberg. Remember how Obama's cabinet demanded Hollywood incorporate pro-Obamacare propaganda into the scripts of TV and movies?

I've always argued the TV show Madam Secretary was created primarily as a political vehicle to make Hillary more palatable as a presidential candidate.

Weird how the same libtard crew that was pounding the table for 24-7 wall-to-wall coverage of the 'pussy grabbing' tape... so much so that they made millions of pussy hats to allude to the comments Trump made, and dragged that annoying actress whats-her-name to make a vulgar and obnoxious speech at Pussypallooza to talk about it all over again, all of a sudden gets a case of the "move on" dry heaves.

Makes me want to read more about it.

P.S. *I* knew Weinstein was a serial-abusing sociopathic scumbag who made Ted Kennedy look like a choirboy, and I have nothing to do with the film industry and live nowhere near Hollywood. For Streep, et. al., to claim total ignorance is Nuremburg-level garbage.

cubanbob said...

Streep knows nothing about almost everything so therefore she shouldn't comment on anything.
She's an actress, actors, they read scripts and mouth the words (preferably with some degree of talent) but it doesn't require them to actually know what they are saying. In a couple of decades they will be replaced by AI and vastly better CGI. Harvey is old, he will be among the last of his type in Hollywood since in the future algorithms won't be offended by guys like him spanking the monkey.
