At the Pepper Harvest Café...

... the conversation is heating up.

(And so, maybe, is the shopping — through The Althouse Amazon Portal.)

Wow, I am jealous, those are some nice looking peppers. I grow tomatoes and sweet peppers every year for maybe past decade and this year was worst, by far. What looked like blossom end rot, but not certain because two people I know also had same problem, struck all my tomatoes and pepper plants at same time and I got nothing from eight tomato and eight sweet pepper plants.

Greens and Reds brings to mind chariot racing in Byzantium. Just insert Ann's blue eyes for green and Meades mountain bike races and it all fits. Meade makes Wisconsin farming look easy.

Anybody on Rx for opioids? Trump is gonna try to cut off your supply.

For some reason the IMG file isn't loading, so I have no idea what kind of peppers Meade grew. "... the conversation is heating up." suggests they're the hot variety — Seranno, Habanero, whatever. I don't know a thing about growing peppers, but since the natural stock of the popular cultivars come from tropical climates I assume good peppers need more extreme summers than are typical for Wisconsin.

Quaestor gave up gardening a while back. I used to take pride in my tomatoes. I used a post-hole digger to create a 3' deep cavity into which I would back-fill with a mixture of sand, loam, and a little horse manure. Then I would put in my bedding plants, which would takeoff like crazy, growing 6 feet or more before the first young tomatoes appeared. From just six vines I would get more lovely baseball-sized fruit then me and my GF could eat. Then one summer, a group of barbarian squirrels attacked my vines. They ravaged very green tomato they could reach, taking one or two deep bites and then biting into another. What vile little wasters they were. Since then I buy tomatoes, don't grow 'em.

Just had an office lunch of deep-fried King Mackerel. Delicious, delicious, delicious.

Ah! the IMG file just loaded. Looks like a mix of Jalapenos and Cayennes.

Hot stuff!

I am stealing that! I have a post hole digger (auger) for the rear PTO of my tractor. Maybe I can put us in tomato sauce for the entire year without a big hassle! I usually use it for planting trees, I plant a lot of them, Once you have the tractor, the auger costs about the same as the labor to dig a bunch of holes once.

The green ones with the bright red tip look like the end of a poking stick in a campfire or maybe an inflamed appendix.

At a glance they appear to just be regular old jalapenos (a mere 2,500 - 5,000 scovilles). Habaneros look like little wizened angry pumpkins.

It is like planting a small tree. With the soil loosened up many tomato cultivars quickly develop a massive root, which allows the vine to grow quite tall very quickly. Tall vines can support more fruit than shorter, bushier vines.

I know the rabid right wing now wants to tear the Bush family down and have loss all sense of fairness and objectivity. But cut President Bush some slack. At 93 he is clearly diminished in his faculties. If you want to hold anyone responsible, hold those around him who care for him.

Also, the big difference between Weinstein and Bill O’Reilly situation is that Fox News DID know exactly what was going on and covered it up. That is what makes it the bigger scandal.

Exsqueeze me? A baking powder?

Who in your comparison did not "know" about Weinstein? The crux of the whole scandal is that everyone knew! His employeer (his own production company) certainly knew. Other producers knew, actors & actresses knew, people in the media knew...everyone knew. If you want to argue that O'Reilly is worse you because people in power knew then you've seemingly picked the single WORST example for use as a contrast!

I'm trying to decide which is more stupid, the right taking down Bush Sr., or the Weinstein thing. THis sums it up nicely in the meantime.

the right taking down Bush Sr.

They are? I did not know that.

Much of the right may not shed a bitter tear at his foible's outing, but what is there to do or not do if one would? Look at the poor man. Will he be arrested, blackballed at his club, mistreated by a female doctor?

I wish GHW Bush no harm. However, if the price of leaving him alone is to leave alone the CLAMs (Congressional Left + Academia + Media), that's a high price.

If the Bushes don't wish the ill will of the Right, they should consider moderating their opposition to its titular head.

Come on, we all know that Fox is the bigger scandal because Republicans. You really should try to keep up on the facts though regarding HW if you care about credibility.

tim in vermont said...

HR knew about Halperin, BTW. What makes you pick and choose among these scum? I don't think O'Reilly used force the way HW and Bill Clinton did though, if you want to split hairs.

The great outcome of the Weinstein case is that now all men are now on notice that the old culture of sexual harassment and sexism will no longer be tolerated. There will now be zero tolerance. Men everywhere are now going to be extra careful to not even come anywhere near that line.

Thank you Ann for the small role you played on your blog in helping to shift the culture to a more just and equal place.

Oh this is delicious: Twitter just banned Russia Today and Sputnik News from advertising on their service, right? Well turns out in the days leading up to the 2016 election Twitter actively sought a partnership (meaning big ad sales) with RT and specifically pitched the lure of increased interest around the election!

. Twitter made multiple offers for RT to advertise on their platform in 2016, according to RT deputy editor-in-chief Kirill Karnovich-Valua. "The main idea pitched by Twitter to RT was ‘to take a stand,'" Kirill Karnovich-Valua wrote. "The more money RT spent, the bigger the reach to American voters that Twitter would provide. At the meeting, the RT team was shown an in-depth presentation giving background into Twitter's advantages as a platform of choice for the election.
In order to entice RT to agree to the exclusive elections offer, Twitter promised a package of perks and bonuses. The offer included such things as: closed beta testing of new tools and products; a customized emoji-hashtag that would help RT stand out with special election coverage; customized analytics and research solutions; and a dedicated team of Twitter experts to help with content curation and media strategy."

Oooooh so tasty! The Leftist Media really is as stupid and corrupt as they seem--the more they thunder about "democracy dying in the darkness" and "taking a stand for America" the more obvious it is just what pathetic liars they are.

[I mean, sure, it's just one guy's word, but Twitter has declined to address the accusation and since our new standard is "accusations mean something, where there's smoke there's fire" then they must be guilt, right?] Wonderful.

My dad has been growing peppers like these and others all summer, until right now.

Since my wife passed, I just stumble through life, since about 6 months after my mom died, my dad is probably gonna take over the world. His interest in life is amazing. Last week he told me he wants to umpire another season of high school baseball this spring. He's gonna be 80. He quit 4 years ago. Dang.

Again, it's the quid pro quo of DC - no one goes to jail, or loses their pension, or is fired - no matter how egregious their crimes. And best of all, the victims (ie taxpayers) get to pay the fines.

No, sexual harassment was specifically allowed in Harvey Weinstein's employment contract. Which you'd know, if you weren't so busy trying to stop anyone here from talking about it.

Harvey Weinstein's Ultimate Enabler Is His Employment Contract, Says a New Report

The big difference between Weinstein and Bill O'Reilly is that there will be a Fox News when this is all over. There will not be a Weinstein Company.
