"A gunman firing from a Las Vegas hotel rained a rapid-fire barrage on a huge outdoor concert festival on Sunday night..."

"... sending thousands of people fleeing until SWAT units found and killed him," the NYT reports.
More than 50 victims died, and at least 200 others were wounded, officials said, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of Clark County... identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock, 64. He said the police were seeking “a companion” named Marilou Danley, and the authorities later said they were “confident” they had located her....

Video of the shooting captured nine seconds of rapid-fire, continuous bursts, followed by 37 seconds of silence from the weapon amid panicked screaming. The barrage of gunfire then erupted again in at least two more rounds, both shorter than the first.

Who was Stephen Paddock? I'm not seeing any details other than that he was 64 and "of Mesquite, Nevada." I put that in quotes because "of" is different from "from." It indicates only his current place of residence.

ADDED: As for Marilou Danley (who is in custody): "She is described as an Asian woman, around four feet 11 inches tall and weighing 111 lbs." That's from The Daily Mail, which also says that Paddock's lived in a house built 3 years ago and valued at $396,000.

I'm seeing the street address as a particular number on Babbling Brook Court, but Google Street view only gets me to the entrance to the neighborhood:

UPDATE: "At least 50 dead, more than 400 injured after shooting on Las Vegas Strip" (WaPo).
The carnage in Las Vegas surpassed the death toll of 49 people slain in June 2016 when a gunman in Orlando, who later said he was inspired by the Islamic State, opened fire inside a crowded nightclub....

Police believe Paddock, a local resident, was a “lone wolf” attacker. Lombardo did not give further details, however, on Paddock’s background or possible motivation.

“We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo said during a briefing. “Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor, and the scene is static.”

Haven't these time slots been already been sold to advertisers long ago? And I am not sure that channels that get a tiny bump when a major news story breaks will get to use that to increase ad revenues, which I believe are based on historical ratings. Then again, I don't know that much about the television advertisement business, so I may be completely wrong.

It sounds like he used a fully automatic weapon. The feds will be working very hard to learn how he obtained it. It's possible for civilians to legally buy a fully automatic weapon but it requires a process that includes a background check and costs money. Those legal automatic weapons are very expensive. IIRC, if this was a legally obtained automatic weapon, it would be the first or second time one was ever used in a crime since the laws were enacted in the 1930s. It's likely far easier and less expensive to get an illegal weapon. A lot of stuff gets smuggled into the country every day. We should know soon enough.

So while none of us know about the motives, it's a good thing to be a little humble about assigning some kind of political blame ("Trump supporter!" "Anti-Trump supporter!")

It's not going to justify anyone's side. It shouldn't be about blame. The non-24 hr news media (main networks) does a pretty good job usually although they dip into salaciousness and sensationalism - it's hard to get this stuff right imo. CNN has a problem filling it's airwaves, fighting for ratings, so they do go overboard. I don't think their coverage triggers individuals much anymore (maybe when they were newer). I think motivation can be tied to selfishness, self-centeredness, thrill-seeking, general dissatisfaction with their own personal lives.

Anyway, however you see it I think responding with a little more kindness, respect and consideration to each other - to our opponents - is wisdom. It's really tough for all of us.

And even if the media did a total black out, wouldn't it still filter up through the various social media fora?

I get your point about a desire for notoriety motivating people, though I doubt in and of itself it is a sufficient motivation, but I don't really see anyway you can stop it in such a connected world.

A lot of stuff gets smuggled into the country every day. We should know soon enough.

At a party held some years back, I got into an occasionally heated discussion with someone over gun laws. The exchange went something like this:

ME: You say our firearms laws should be like those in the EU, correct? Then explain how the Muslim terrorists who massacred the staff of Charlie Hebdo using fully automatic AK-47 rifles?

SHE: Don't know. Don't care.

ME: You should because it's important. Let me put it another way. If you were to compare the illegal drug trade, especially the trade in cocaine and heroin, to a legal and legit business would you choose a corporation like Merck or FedEx?

SHE: Between those two? Merck, obviously. Viagra's a drug. Crack is a drug.

ME: I disagree. The drug cartels aren't "drug companies". They're logistic companies. They make money moving products, any products, from where they are made to where they are consumed. In the case of crack cocaine, it's from the mountains of Columbia where the coca is grown to here where the crack is smoked. While it's true that the cartels run factories where the coca leaves are processed into cocaine — something along the lines of what a pharma company does — the major effort of the operation is smuggling, the surreptitious transportation of contraband goods from one place to another. Just like FedEx except FedEx moves legal stuff in an open and lawful manner. What they move is immaterial. Whatever is both illegal and desirable is grist for their mill — drugs, whores, stolen Porsches, or Uzi submachine guns.

It's not that hard to make a semi-auto weapon into a full-auto, or just build one from scratch.

It's harder to do so if you want it to reliably stop firing when you release the trigger, but for a massacre like this, one wouldn't care.

Law-abiding people - like the tens of thousands of machinists who easily could do so - don't do this because there are some rather severe Federal penalties for doing so, and since the sound of full-auto is rather distinctive, there's nowhere to shoot it for fun.

By that standard, a model rocket is essentially a ICMB.

A "slide fire" is a rifle stock device that allows someone to "bump fire" a rifle by using the recoil of the firing (after the initial trigger pull) to bump the rifle for a vary fast follow-up firing. You can achieve something that sounds and looks like full auto but it is not. Mechanically quite different. There are a few different rifle (and pistol) add-ons that try to do this, the "slide fire" is the most well known and has become somewhat of a generic term to describe these stock-assist devices.

There are even Youtube videos showing how to approximate a slide fire by hooking your thump into your pants-belt loop.

Trumpit thinks 'it' is funny, but in reality there is nothing wrong with hunting and wild game as a nice supplement to the freezer. Not contaminating the venison is a serious issue and does require a carefully placed shot. As well as when field dressing to be careful to not contaminate with gut or bladder fluids. Glazing, wrapping and hanging before butchering also enhances the meat. My husband's family existed on mostly venison until he was 12 years old. They lived in logging camps in the Trinity Alps and in Oregon. Fishing and hunting were the mainstays of their diet.

Now, wild duck? It depends on what the duck has been eating. A fishing duck like a Coot or other....gaack. However mallards, widgeons are ok. We mostly breast the wildfowl, pound the meat to tenderize before cooking, and stew the rest of the bird which is really tough. Wild fowl have very little body fat and this is why most people don't like them because they cook as if they were domestic (fat) birds.

Now back to our regularly scheduled speculation on the Las Vegas shooting and sniping at each other about guns, politics etc.

We used to cook mallards with an onion in the body cavity. They are pretty greasy,

Coots NO !

One recipe for wild duck I have been sort of wanting to try is to encase the whole duck, feathers and all, in mud and bury it in a pit of coals. When you remove the casing, the feathers come off and you pick off the meat. Kind of like a bronzino encased in salt.

I was always in charge of cleaning the game and the way to get all the feathers off ducks is to get a pot of boiling water and float a block of paraffin on it. When the paraffin has melted, you dip the duck into the boiling water (carefully) and when you pull it out, the feathers are coated with paraffin. You let it cool and then break the paraffin coat and pull it off and all the feathers come off with the paraffin mold.

I was doing this when I was ten years old. Maybe it had something to do with my becoming a surgeon.

Damn, this is worse than a weekend in Chicago.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

@ Tim

I used to roast the mallards whole in one of these Clay Roasters Pluck the mallard (PITA) Prick all over. Maybe cover with a bit of bacon strips if it seems too lean. Onions ala Michael K. Garlic cloves. Salt Pepper, Thyme or other spices. You soak the roaster first and the bird is sort of steam roasted and very moist. Line the bottom with parchment paper or you will end up with a greasy roaster that is hard to clean (gross). If you want or have a broiler, you can crisp up the duck at the very last.

Same idea as your clay recipe but easier and no feathers.

See....recipes :-)

Dust Bunny Queen said...

OOH Parafin blocks. I have a bunch of those. Thanks Michael. I had just used the scalding method.

AllenS said...

DBQ, just remember to not gut the birds before dipping them in the parafin. Back when my dad was alive, duck hunting was a real big deal.

@Althouse, I've read elsewhere that he lived in a gated community. That would explain why Google Street view could go no further. The satellite view shows large houses on relatively small plots of very arid ground.

The online Daily Mirror reports:

"The suspect was later named as Stephen Paddock, who it is claimed had converted to Islam."

OTOH, the Mirror is basically a tabloid so one may take that with a grain of salt.

Big Mike said...

The shooter's brother, Ed Paddock, claims that his brother "was not an avid gun guy at all." Another report says that there were ten guns in the room when SWAT broke in. These two statements do not add up.

Something else seems strange to me. The 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel is at least 100 yards up in the air, and the concert site is well away from the hotel. My point is that, even though Stephen Paddock was spraying automatic fire, it seems to me that he had to have practicing more than a little just to get his rounds to hit close to the crowd. How did he do that with no one noticing?

It could also be possible that the shooter's brother really wasn't that close to him and has no idea what he believed or didn't believe. I know people who haven't talked to their siblings in years.

There will be security video of him coming and going with large bags, I suspect.

I posted this in another thread, but it's really shocking - although it shouldn't be.

"A top legal executive at CBS, Hayley Geftman-Gold, said she "is not even sympathetic" for the victims of the shooting at a country music festival at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Sunday night.

"If they wouldn't do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing," wrote Geftman-Gold on Facebook, perhaps referring to Sandy Hook. "I'm actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters."

Reports suggest someone was firing from the room as police arrived. Presuming that's true how could another person have exited the room? It seems unlikely.

Notice this doesn't accurately describe any of the responses. It's like our trolls determine how they characterize everything completely without regard to reality.

We really need a better class of troll.

Even ISIS noted that the problem with the Pulse killings was that they alienated their allies on the left, so they needed a target that cheered their allies.

Remember Michael Moore's post on his website on 9-11 about how the terrorist attacked their friends in NYC and should have attacked Kansas City or Dallas?

It shouldn't be about blame.

Of course it will. Communal guilt. That is the America ARM believes in. Gun owners. The filthy Jews of the new century.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil said...

Of course ARM believes that. However, when a Muslim shoots up Pulse Nightclub, ARM does not rush to blame violent Muslim culture. Instead we are told we can not judge an entire religion by the actions of a few.

Sweeping generalizations only apply to conservative gun owners.

Trump is divisive. But he did a good job today and he was not divisive. That's what the president needs to do.

That's what the left said about Romney and Bush, plus every other person they've ever disagreed with. Which is how they got Trump.

There's a satisfying symmetry there.

There's quite a bit of daylight, I think, between the brother's description of "just a guy who played online poker" and a guy who referred to himself as a professional gambler and was making daily bets that exceeded 10K at casinos. If Marilou Danley has any sense at all she won't be returning to the US, where Althouse (and seemingly everyone else) already has her in custody.

In the rest of the world, she's in the Philippines and is not a person of interest. I think in the US they lock you up first and let you try to prove your innocence over the next few years if you're rich enough.
