If you're going to pick out the "57 most outrageous quotes" from a Donald Trump speech, you need to put them in order of outrageousness.

At CNN, Chris Cillizza has "Donald Trump's 57 most outrageous quotes from his Arizona speech," but they're in chronological order. He's trying to bowl us over with numerosity, but if you start reading them, and it's a big slog. Most of them aren't even "outrageous," just susceptible to some criticism or clarification. I end up scrolling looking for anything I'd call "outrageous." What's the most outrageous thing here? I don't even know. 57 is just too damned many. It makes Cillizza look peevish and nit-picky.

To be fair, when you say these are the "57 most outrageous quotes," they don't need to be that outrageous. These are just the most outrageous quotes from the set of quotes that were Trump's speech. Maybe he made 500 statements. These are just the 57 that struck Chris Cillizza the hardest. And it's a way for people who don't want to have to watch or read the whole thing to get a feeling for what was said.

Nevertheless, the headline aggravates me, because it clickbait-promised a torrent of outrageousness and I can't find anything too exciting. And when I realized that the ordering was merely chronological, I felt ripped off by the come-on.

I ended up skimming, but I stopped at #28 and laughed:
"Now, you know, I was a good student. I always hear about the elite. You know, the elite. They're elite? I went to better schools than they did. I was a better student than they were. I live in a bigger, more beautiful apartment, and I live in the White House, too, which is really great."
Not outrageous, just Trump being Trump. I guess for some people any of Trump's Trumpish statements are experienced as outrageous and perhaps Cillizza is entertaining them or helping them with their horrible mood.

That reminds me: I think the tearing down of Confederate statues is something people are doing because they can't tear down Trump. It's like kicking the dog after a hard day working for a boss you hate.

I think the number 57 is a second-hand reference to McCarthyism. In the movie, "The Manchurian Candidate" a McCarthy-like character is expounding on how many communists are secretly in high US government positions. His eyes fall on a bottle of Heinz 57 sauce and he uses that number in his claim. It's a way of saying that Trump just makes stuff up like that.

He was met with riots. Millions in damages in DC on Inauguration Day.

You are so full of shit. Yes, there was some property damage on Inauguration day (which again I must reiterate, because you will claim I support these thugs), but millions? Bullshit.

Fine, you "opponent of thugs", how much damage was there? Who should be punished for that damage?

The problem, Ann, with doing what you want is that if he ranked them in order, people would look at the first couple, say "this is crap", and stop looking at the article.

Clickbait? Or Democrat Party operative with byline?

Embrace the healing power of "and".

Trump has taken this to another level, and the leftist MSM seemingly can't help itself, fallsing bigly for it every time. I used one example from the speech above - Cizzilla called Trump out for claiming that Amazon owned WaPo, and pointed out that it was Amazon's boss, Jeff Bezos who owned WaPo, and not Amazon itself. So, much of Trump America now knows who that paper is the mouthpiece for. For what industry, region (Silicon Valley), state (CA), and politics (leftist crony capitalism and classical fascism, which was socialism with private ownership and the biggest companies working closely with the govt). Remember when Trump said that he had been wire tapped by the Obama Administration and the Dems? And they called foul there - there weren't any court ordered physical wiretaps on his personal phones. Instead, it was reverse targeting and illegal unmasking of FISA intercepts of everyone around Trump ordered by Obama White House political appointees. Trump tells the figurative, but not literal truth, and by the MSM harping on the nits and details that show that he was literally wrong, his figurative messages, thus being validated, get driven home.

Is any one of them as bad as "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor"?

The only reason that Trump is not a complete liar on a scale of about 100 times what Obama said, is that Trump never had the political wherewithal to get any sort of plan passed.

This commentor blames Trump when it is the Congress that should be blamed for lack of legislation. That’s what you do when Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are your heroes.

If Trump is your hero you read and understand the Constitution.

The strategy of blaming a President for the shortcomings and ineffectiveness of Congress would have worked back in the pre-Trump days. Things are different now.

Field Marshall Freder can view some of the damage his allies created on Inauguration Day in DC.

It was in millions.

Oh, he always says things that he doesn't believe to appease people he worries and then reverts immediately into his true form.

Brookzene do you also give palm readings and tarot card work ?

You lefties are so oblivious you really think you can reverse this election.

I will grant that the GOPe is trying to help you by impeding legislation but the public is wide awake.

First you got the Tea Party which the GOPe didn't like either.

When that got no response, you get Trump.

I promise you, you won't like what comes after if he is forced out or assassinated.

Obama was never like that. He was very secure with who he was and his capacity to carry out his responsibilities.

Well it should be pretty easy to be secure with who you are if everyone you have ever known (to include the major press) go out of their way to tell you how great your are on a daily basis. Where school kids sing your praise. Where celebrities line up to kiss your ass. Where you have been constantly promoted and held up as great for doing no more than showing up. Encircling yourself with yes men. Life is great in your safe space!

The trouble is Trump is not just the president of his base. He doesn't know how to be competently be president of all of the United States. Granted it's a tough job and not everyone's done it well in the past, but his failure to lead all of us is nearly catastrophic, to the point that he's asking to be removed. I personally think it's 50-50 he will resign but ymmv.

OMG! Trump is more of "everyone's President" than Obama ever wanted to be. Trump WANTS to be the country's President. Obama not only wrote off half the country, he went out of his way to attack it.

God how someone can by so blind and partisan...

Well, the reason that I questioned why there isn't a "Trump's Own Media Derangement Syndrome" tag is because so much of the stuff that Trump says about the media is nothing but deranged.

No you questioned whether an article about "57 Most Outrageous" things qualifies as TDS.

Here's a hint: most is a superlative. It means one, not a never-ending list. And there was doubt on your part because it's basically what you would have written had the WAPO given you the column inches to do so.

The media IS deranged. People with TDS are the ones unable to see it.

Bush’s strategy to counter the purposeful misinterpretation by the MSM of what he said was to issue short, simple press releases which had no chance of misconstruction by the MSM. The MSM then complained that the Bush administration was uncommunicative and not “transparent.” Poor Bush had no way to fight back. Enter Trump and Twitter.

Yes. And the Tea Party was an attempt to do things politely with those good manners the left is always talking about.

And Obama turned the IRS loose on them.

Now we have Trump.

How about where cabinet members take turns going around the table to praise their dear leader one after the other? Grown-ass adults, cabinet members for God's sake.

When you believe you can read the true intentions of the man on the television because he's talking in a way that you understand but other people don't, it's time to put down the remote.

And go tell the nice people at the hospital down the street all about it.

Sorry it's completely evident that Trump has made no effort to unite the people of America - he sure didn't in the immediate week following the inauguration - do you need it spelled out how he failed to do that?

I think it's clear that nobody not even from your party believes he is a "uniter". He ran specifically on being a divider. You can't change that. That's his true form - divide, confront, "tell it like it is". You guys crack me up how you try to run from what he is at the same time you embrace it.

Brookzene said...

Right. "LIAR!" shouted out loud at Obama as he addressed a joint session of congress. Boy I remember how polite that was. That and their attendance in Town Hall meetings. Yeah, the tea party was a real model of good will and politeness. Don't bs us.

That headline and article are nothing more than a mainstream media outlet trying to play the clickbait game.

The headline promises something juicy, but when you click through you're in Dorothy Parker's Oakland ("There's no 'there' there.") But it doesn't matter, they already have your click-through.

Just keep in mind:

1. It's all about either money or virtue signalling--or in some happy cases, both But never anything else (like committing acts of journalism).
2. They all lie all the time. Or, more precisely, assume you are being spun unless you can prove otherwise.
3. As Glenn Reynolds says, assume they are Democratic Party operatives and you won't be far wrong.

No fewer than 2 of those points apply to EVERYTHING, including the crossword puzzle and fashion pages.

"They bring a knife. We bring a gun." - not outrageous
"I want you to punch back twice as hard." - not outrageous
"We're going to reward our friends and punish our enemies." - not outrageous
"I want you to get in their faces." - not outrageous
"The police acted stupidly." - not outrageous
"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." - not outrageous

I guess one's outrage is determined according to who's going to be on the receiving end of leftist calls to violence.

Jim at said...

""LIAR!" shouted out loud at Obama as he addressed a joint session of congress."

One. It was, "You lie."
Two. History shows Obama WAS lying.

So, suck it.
