"Did the president dump Comey for mishandling the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email, as Trump and his team have said?"

"Or was Comey’s handling of the investigation simply a pretense to fire an independent-minded director who was investigating ties between Trump’s campaign and the Russians?"

That's how FiveThirtyEight frames the question.

Or would you say questions? I think it's one question if you see it as an either/or, which is what you will do if you think there are only 2 options. The second alternative is framed so strongly — "simply a pretense" — that it seems set up for rejection. I expect the answer to be it probably wasn't simply a pretense.

Now, let's read the article, which is by Perry Bacon Jr., who sees plenty of evidence that Comey indeed mishandled the Clinton email investigation. But if that were the real reason, why didn't the firing occur months ago? Trump had the basis for firing Comey, but he didn't pull the trigger. He just kept it in reserve, so doesn't that mean that he knew he could justify firing Comey and he waited until something else, something about him, not Clinton, made him want to be rid of the man?

The best answer to that is: Comey made a big mistake last week testifying before Congress (when he that Huma Abedin forwarded 1,000s of Hillary emails to Anthony Weiner). Bacon's response to that is hard to find. He switches to talking about how Democrats are criticizing Trump for firing Comey. But, of course, Democrats reflexively criticize Trump. They're calling him "Nixonian." A Republican Senator said he was "troubled" and another said there were "questions."

Bacon speculates that "the American people" might not believe Trump, but that's why I'm reading this article, Mr. Bacon. I thought you were going to answer the question why Trump did what he did, but now it seems you're only talking about whether people will believe Trump's assertion.

Please, please let this come to pass.

"Besides being an impressive brief for the firing of James Comey, [Rosenstein's letter] also appears to open the door for something else, ... -- the renewed investigation of Hillary Clinton.

The original investigation, under Comey, was replete with destroyed evidence, circumscribed interrogations (in Clinton's case not under oath), and more unsolved mysteries than pills in an aspirin jar....

Yes, I know both Trump and Sessions had pledged not to pursue the "Clinton matter" and let bygones be bygones. But that was before the onslaught, the so-called "Resistance" that has made governing so impossible for the administration. It's been non-stop ugliness since the inauguration and even before. Graciousness was not, in the slightest, rewarded. Indeed Clinton herself has now declared herself part of the "Resistance" (has she brushed up on her French?) -- talk about opening the door."

Unfortunately, the terrible Dem-suffering continues unabated. "The Comey firing is a sublime exercise in giving liberals what they wanted while sending them into new fits of apoplexy and Watergate nostalgia. Just last week Hillary Clinton was once again blaming her election loss on Comey, so what’s the problem? (I notice Hillary has been silent about Comey’s firing, unless I missed a statement from her camp.) The fact that Trump was unafraid to do what five presidents were afraid to do with regard to J. Edgar Hoover shows an additional aspect of his character that, while problematic, probably plays well with a lot of the public. It has not gone unnoticed that when Stephen Colbert announced the news of Comey’s firing at the beginning of the taping of his late night show yesterday afternoon, the instant reaction of the studio audience was to erupt in cheers, which was not the reaction Colbert was expecting—or desiring."

Yes, the firing of James Comey is beyond human comprehension, an act so reprehensible as make abortion seem like child's play.

How could Trump do such a thing. To Democrats. To Chuckles Schumer. To Granny Pelosi. To every closet-commie to wear the mantle of indecency and depravity. And so they suffer, and writhe with pain, expelling vomit.

Yancey Ward said...

Scott Adams adeptly dismantles the Comey firing into its relevant pieces today:

"Democrats and the Opposition Media reflexively oppose almost everything President Trump does. This time he gave them something they wanted, badly, but not for the reason they wanted. That’s a trigger. It forces anti-Trumpers to act angry in public that he did the thing they wanted him to do. And they are."

And:

"Trump cleverly addressed the FBI’s Russian collusion investigation by putting the following line in the Comey firing letter: “While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”

"That one odd sentence caused every media outlet to display the quote and talk about it, over and over. And when you focus on something, no matter the reason, it rises in importance in your mind. President Trump, the Master Persuader, made all of us think about the “not under investigation” part over, and over, and over."

The addition of the bit about "not under investigation" actually is brilliant rhetorically. I haven't yet seen a single story that was able to avoid that part, at least as a link. Editing it out of the letter is apparently a step the media is unwilling, at this point, to take.

In addition, Adams finishes up today's essay with the same essential point I have made about Comey's handling of the Clinton investigation- that he was trying to do what he thought was best for the country given the circumstances in which he found himself. In my opinion, his only real error was not offering a resignation after the inauguration, but it is possible he did even that and it was refused at the time.

If President Trump or anyone is accused of doing anything with the hacked emails related to Russia it will be interesting to see how they establish the chain of custody of evidence since original records seem to have been destroyed or returned to owners for destruction. If immunity from prosecution was given to witnesses then they can't take the fifth, supposedly, and if they are found to lie they will go to prison.

Bruce Hayden said...

The big problem with going after Crooked Hillary's underlings is that Lynch gave a bunch of them immunity from prosecution. It was always a bit strange - normally prosecutors give underlings and co-conspirators immunity to flip them. No proffer of testimony means no immunity. But there didn't seem to have been any attempt at flipping them - just immunity with no known quid pro quo.

Another problem, of course, is the statute of limitations. Don't remember if it is 3 or 5 years for the Espionage Act and the Official Records Act. But we are roughly 4 1/3 years since she left office. Of course, after that, we have destruction of evidence and obstruction of justice, but that was essentially her underlings, who, mostly, now have immunity.

Original Mike said...

@Bruce Hayden - You've just laid out exactly why Comey deserved to be fired.

Not to mention that ultimately - it may not be in our lifetimes - some unbiased historians are going to pass judgement on her failures, lies and sleaze.

The problem with immunity is that they cannot be prosecuted. Which they richly deserve.

Maybe the immunity could be withdrawn if cooperation was a part of the deal. We know evidence was destroyed , in some cases by destroying laptops.

Your ignorance, purposeful or otherwise, of comments offered up in the months, weeks and days prior to this thread does not constitute a sound basis for psycho or political analysis.

The fact that the entire establishment, dems and "lifelong republicans" actually conspired to hack the dem nominating process, protect Hillary from probes into her corruption, as well as the obama administration activities which were all "out in the open" due to dem overconfidence that they had achieved a permanent and unassailable Presidential Electoral College lock joined together to form the foundation which precipitated all the key events that led to Comey's actions and inevitable firing.

Comey has badly damaged the FBI.

In the Clinton caper, Comey ostensibly seized the Justice Department’s decision-making power. In reality, though, he exercised it within obvious limitations, and under circumstances in which his superiors factored decisively.

Those superiors were President Obama, the chief executive, who made crystal clear in his public comments that he did not want Clinton indicted; and Attorney General Loretta Lynch, the head of the real decision-making department – the Justice Department. Contrary to media-Democrat intimations, Lynch never actually recused herself after being caught in a shameful private meeting with Bill Clinton.

Another official familiar with the briefing — which included Senate Intelligence Committee leaders Richard Burr and Mark Warner along with Comey — said it came after weeks of bipartisan pressure from the two leaders for the FBI to speed up the Russia probe. This official said the conversation was nuanced and that Comey told the senators that the inquiry had been effectively stalled due to a lack of access to prosecutors and because there was no one at the Justice Department to guide the probe forward."

Jonathan Turley just said on television he doesn't know what the crime is that Trump is supposed to have broken. I texted him your number, Inga.

OM,

Turley's a hack, probably looking for a seat on the Supreme Court. I never said Trump was going to succeed at shutting down the investigation. I have more confidence in our democracy than to think a Trump could last without being impeached.

@furious_a,

Nixon didn't fire the FBI Director.

True. Hoover died, and Nixon picked Patrick Gray as Director over Mark Felt, who had a tizzy fit and decided to become "Deep Throat" and to leak all sorts of classified information.

Nixon did fire CIA Director Helms, so there's that.

"Turley's a hack,"

Ahh, no.

Inga: "OM, Turley's a hack..."

LOL

Inga has already pronounced Trump guilty and Turkey does not agree, therefore he must be a hack.

Same with Dershowitz one supposes.

Ahhh, yes.

Let's compare the Wikipedia preambles of Jonathan Turley:

Jonathan Turley (born May 6, 1961) is an American lawyer, legal scholar, writer, commentator, and legal analyst in broadcast and print journalism. He is currently a professor of law at the George Washington University Law School.

...and Inga's favorite legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin:

Jeffrey Ross Toobin[1] (born May 21, 1960) is an American lawyer, author, and legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker.[2]

He has written several books, including one on the O.J. Simpson murder case. It was adapted as a series, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and aired in 2016 as the first season of FX American Crime Story. It won numerous Emmy awards.

Inga: "Trump's temper tantrum."

Lol

Trump's "temper tantrum" action is precisely what the leftist mob has been calling for over the last 8 months!

Careful what you wish for!

Btw, the videos of Dems screaming for Comey's head are priceless when juxtaposed with their calls now to canonuze St Comey.

Your non-answer tells me the stupid does burn when you touch it. Perhaps you should quit touching it. Reading comprehension is a good skill. Refine yours so you are less the dupe than you evidence here.

Oh shut your pie hole Birkel. Your first comment on this thread today is about me.... again? Obsession is weird. Now go wipe your chin and don't touch anyone with those sweaty hands. Oh and straighten your bow tie you creepy little troll.

@Original Mike When I saw Inga's Turley comment I immediately thought of Toobin, but you beat me to it. Well done.

Inga, like a lot of lefties, doesn't like bow ties.

I even changed my avatar when some good kept complaining about my bow tie.

Does it make you think of a hangman's noose, Inga ?

Inga once again displays her amazing lack of reading comprehension.

Her Politico story does not say that Burr said Comey asked for resources. It says that an anonymous source has claimed that Comey asked Burr for resources.

Does the story claim Burr confirmed this claim by this anonymous source? No. But Inga is sure it's in there somewhere.

Let’s not be too hard on Inga. She’s got her talking points and is sticking to them like any good lefty.

Inga allows all of us to clearly see what lies CNN/MSNBC/Fox/etc. are trying to push without having to actually spend time keeping up with them. As such she provides a valuable service to the comment section. Don’t fight the horse – RIDE the horse.

Good point. Thanks, Inga.

In all my years(I’m 74) I have not seen the MSM fixate so much on a POTUS as they have on President Trump. The news is 90% Trump and 10% other news. For over a year the news has been Trump, Trump and more Trump. Other important events have been and are occurring but they get shorted unless the newswhores can invent some connection to Trump.

One reason is the ratings. Rachel Maddow has strengthened her career by attracting a strong niche market of anti-Trumpers. All the cables are getting better ratings by featuring Trump-related news. So they are happily fixating.

Another reason is that Trump news is usually entertaining and interesting. Trump is never boring. Story lines are easy to manufacture and the MSM believes it can bring Trump down – as they have so many others – with some well-placed lies.

But Trump keeps flipping the script on them. And he won the office handily despite universal MSM opposition. I am thinking that all this hysteria concerning ANY action Trump takes works to Trump’s advantage. I also believe this is unique to Trump, that we’ve never seen this amount of idiocy about any other POTUS in our recent history.

I have to smile when various folks speculate that the MSM reaction to Comey’s firing was surprising to Trump. Surely Trump knows by now that he’ll be condemned no matter what he does or how he does it. I think he expects it and plans for it. Trump doesn’t have to be nice, careful, thoughtful or respectful because he knows doing so gets him nothing from the MSM.

To quote someone else, you should know by now that when it comes to liberals accusing Republicans, it's not the evidence that matters, it's the seriousness of the charges. The other way around, well, neither evidence nor charges matters. Just the intent, which is ALWAYS good.
