There is a very interesting opinion piece on Jerry Pournelle's blog at Chaos about Comey and the Clinton machine. Well worth a read. Apologies, I don't do links.

There is a rather good article about the Manchester bombing at Bloomberg:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-24/manchester-bomber-s-father-says-son-made-regular-visits-to-libya

Dad is in total denial, or perhaps a jihadi himself. The other son was arrested yesterday - he's probably the one who posted the pre-warning of the attack.

For those of us who believed that forcing moderate Muslims to have some skin in the game, the latest fallout from the Manchester bombing is sobering. Apparently the authorities were warned by localislims to keep an eye on young Mr. Abedi, but did nothing. Shades of the Orlando nightclub massacre and the Tsarnaev brothers!

So the next step has to be security officials losing their jobs and being barred from ever working for the government ever again in any capacity. Sooner or later someone will care enough about terrorism to do something.

@Big Mike. It is interesting you bring up the Tsarnaev brothers, the case in which the Russkies shared intelligence with the US. Trump was accused of doing the reverse a couple of weeks and the media wanted to string him up. Hmm.

This seems very Althouse-bloggable: The Harvard Review literary magazine commissioned 200 poets to write little haiku love poems (basically) to outgoing president Barack Obama. A sample:

Healing in winter
Lava-flower tea—its wood
Endures like laurel.

Island-born, cool lava-bloom.
You. Presiding, laurel-crowned.

Is this creepy? Appropriate for a democratic republic? A sign of genius? Will there be a special Trump haiku edition in 8 years?

These poems/haikus to Obama are especially stupid.

I read it. This is going to b an interesting few months. I still wonder at the Seth Rich story.

I think the father has also been arrested in the Manchester case.

The other interesting bit about that is the mysterious woman with the backpack who left the concert just before the bomb went off.

A woman at the concert and her daughter saw the suspicious women. The daughter approached the police and was rebuffed when she told them her suspicions.

Ann,
Currently, I send $5/month via PayPal - I know, I should pay more for your insights and links to things I would not have seen otherwise. To that end, if I were to spend $100 a month via Amazon, would you be making more from me?

Related question - if I use my Amazon App on my iPhone, how can I make sure it is working through your portal? When I click on a link via iPhone, I am redirected to my App.

Thanks,
Andy

The Brussels sprouts thing is genetic. My wife hates them. If you have the gene, they taste like soap or as bitter.

Same with cilantro. I feel for cilantro haters because it's hard to find a Mexican or Thai dish that doesn't have cilantro in it.

Brussels sprouts are great roasted with balsamic vinegar. Boiled until mushy, not so much.

Different percentages apply to different products, etc. But it can be more, because it can be 7%.

I'm not sure, but I assume yes. You must complete the transaction before going anywhere else. Not sure exactly what that means in the app context, since the is nowhere else to go. Will try to answer that question.

Big Mike - I would caution against placing the blame on security personnel. They are probably unable to cover all the bases. I read in a German newspaper that the UK security people are hitting risks at the rate of about one a day. This suggests that they are maxed out. Also, the UK government response is to put about 3,000 troops out on the streets (shades of France!) thus freeing up police for anti-terrorism purposes rather than patrol purposes. This strongly suggests that the LEOs are simply under strength for the job.

In short, if you recall the aftermath of the Pulse massacre, an FBI employee was quoted as saying that they had thousands of individuals with profile (esp. the online profile) of the Pulse killer. So the investigations as a result of the reports turned up nothing unique, nor could they "follow" him, because of lack of manpower. There was nothing they could do, in effect. It is not illegal to push this stuff, to watch the terrorist preachers, to link them, to praise them, or even to walk around announcing that you will kill people when you are irritated. And there simply are not nearly enough LEOs around to follow such cases individually.

The bottom line is that it is a numbers game, and one which is not to the favor of LEOs involved.

The phrase "When you are in a hole, stop digging," comes to mind, but obviously many don't agree with that tactic.

Yancey Ward said...

Here is an investigation that is worth keeping your eyes on. I remember reading a couple of articles about this back in March where the Democrats in the House appeared to have a data breach from a family a group of them had employed as IT staff. At the time, I don't remember reading that they had been paid in total over 4 million dollars- a very, very handsome sum for House staff. In any case, it appears that Ms. Wasserman-Schultz was trying to bully a Capitol Police Chief into returning a laptop that had been seized as part of the investigation, and basically threatened him with budget cuts.

After reading some of the other details of this story since March, I think that the Congresswoman herself might be a target here, and that today's article and video shows her trying to tease out whether or not she is.

Hi Ann! - have you read about this -

A pair of white women shut down their pop-up burrito shop in Portland amid cries of cultural appropriation and accusations that they stole their recipes.

“Because of Portland’s underlying racism, the people who rightly own these traditions and cultures that exist are already treated poorly,” an article in the Portland Mercury reads. “These appropriating businesses are erasing and exploiting their already marginalized identities for the purpose of profit and praise.”

That is very suspicious. One of the target individuals has gone to Pakistan. I think quite a few Democrat Congress critters may be in the situation described in Vietnam. "If you have them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow."

Clearly it's a sin for white people to make or sell burritos, but is it a sin for white people to eat burritos?

A friend's Jewish mom pretended to be an Indio who got her recipes from her abuela when she wrote a Mexican cookbook.

From the bloomberg article MaxedOutMama linked to: “My son was supposed to be with us for Ramadan, but he told us he was going to do Umrah, via the U.K., and that’s why he left,” he said, using the term for a lesser pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year.

You think that is a euphemism? I'm going to do Umrah really means "get me my 72 virgins?" Just a thought.

Italian restaurants? French restaurants? Taco Bell? How anti-assimilating, rejecting of other cultures and customs, and separatist must we be?
