Writes the great James Lileks in the comments to my "square look at signs" post, which had my photo of this interesting sign with bland words on an exciting red shape I found in Orderville, Utah:
Lileks adds: "Voila! The sign in all its original beauty, here." And this is what he found:
Beautiful! I just love that the motel turned out to say Orderville.

Signs cost money..
Same goes for KNC Trading, though they kept the building..
I heartily recommend Mr. Lileks' website for its loving devotion to and exposition of American culture from days gone by. Great stuff. And funny as hell.
I snail-mailed Lileks a bunch of old motel postcards and AFAIK he never used them.
:-(
I keep hoping he has printer-problems again because those are his funniest posts. And because he didn't use my postcards.
No wakeup call at this motel..
Lileks is spying on you through your TV, if you have a Dumont or a Philco.
Oh I love that hotel sign. Looks similar to the old holiday inn signs. I always wanted to stay in one of the fancier Holiday Inns called "Holidomes" which had like a pool but my parents would never take me. I really lived a deprived life as a child. The only trip we ever took was a drive to the fucking Indianapolis 500-not during the actual race, but off season. I begged and begged for this little set of flags which had all the different race colors...but my parents said no. We stayed in the back of my dad's truck which had a cab over it.
Hey Titus is your picture as old as that sign?
Ever wonder why hotel signs with VACANCY/NO VACANCY lights went out of fashion? Because hotel night clerks didn't wish to be disturbed while reading/napping/whatever and would turn on the NO VACANCY light as soon as they clocked in.
It almost looks like private property, but that would be out of order.
The second day I got online around the turn of the century, a friend sent me to Lilek's Institute of Official Cheer. I was blown away, and happily assumed the whole Internet was going to be like that. The whole Internet was not.
Lileks is an inspiration to me and to many of us of what the Internet could have been if only we didn't live in a fallen world.
Fernandinande: I don't recall getting those, although they may be in the hopper somewhere. I'll take a look - shoot me an email at my name (first and last, no spaces) at the g - mail dot com thing to tell me what name I might look for on the return envelope.
Thanks to all who've visited the site! Much appreciated. The motel postcard site will have its annual updates starting in May.

Hi! I sent them to your paper, c/o you, so who knows...? There were maybe 30 or 40 of them, mostly colorized. Will email later.
I love your daily Bleating - please break a printer!
David he was one of my Grindr tricks. I am older of course but pull good trade. It's because of my body and I am still called sexy and hot. Rare for someone my age I admit.
All my friends marvel at my ability to get hot muscled cock.
On US 285 in Bailey, Colorado, is an emporium whose store-width sign reads "Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms." It's right at the turnoff to the Buffalo Creek Gun Club, the most beautiful rifle range in the state and maybe the West. The sign is accurate - that's what they sell.
It's kinda sad how bland and generic the new sign is:
FOOD
& DRUG
(& HARDWARE)
So generic and bland and make-do. On the other hand, apparently Sinclair Gas is still around? But even there, they apparently can't afford their classic rounded trapezoid sign, just a picture of one on a square box.
Holiday Inns did away with those magnificent 50s/60s flashing multi-bulb signs simply because of rising electricity costs..

Assuming there was any truth to your whole spiel, dick move to put his face up on the internet with that info.
My paternal grandmother was born in Orderville! (I think the 22nd child in a polygamous family with two wives.)
