"Kathleen Biden accused estranged husband Hunter of reckless spending on 'drugs, prostitutes, and an $80,000 diamond' in divorce docs..."

"...days before his affair with widowed sister-in-law Hallie was revealed," The Daily Mail reports.
Kathleen goes on to explain in her Plantiff's Motion to Enjoin Dissipation of Assets that her estranged husband has been the 'sole source of funds to support the family throughout the entirety of the parties' marriage.'

She claims that Hunter's office had been sending her a monthly transfer of approximately $17,000 for herself and their three daughters - Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy - but that this amount was drastically decreased to just $7,500 in October of last year.
Don't you hate to see a divorce played out in the press? Should documents like this be kept out of the public eye, or do you like getting your chance to have an opinion on the loathsomeness of Hunter Biden? Give all the money to Kathleen, right?

How does Hunter Biden make so much money? Is this the Biden appointed as a director to a Russian company?

Chuck--Amen. RIP, Jack Ryan.

The Chicago Tribune was duped by David Axelrod into pressing for the opening of Ryan's divorce files, which had been sealed at the request of both parties. A Democrat judge in California unsealed them despite the request of both Jack and Jeri Ryan. A contested custody case, which had been amicably settled, was blown open. Ryan had told the GOP honchos that there was nothing embarrassing in the files. He withdrew. Only a Republican can have a sex scandal with his own wife.

The editor of the Tribune later said that she never would have pursued it if she had known how little was in the file.

OTOH, the British tabloids (Like the Daily Mail) have a lot more real news than the NYT and WaPo do. So I'll take the tabloid gossip as long as it comes with real news.

Just like the democrat press, I do not believe either side in a divorce case. They are both lying.

One question: How do you manage to spend $80,000 on one diamond? I tried to impress women once, and still spending $10,000 on a diamond was about as far as you could go without looking like you were trying to buy the woman.

Maybe she meant he bought his new whore a diamond necklace and earrings and bracelet set along with the diamond engagement ring.

Ugly, unfortunate story. I feel bad for Hunter's kid. But, Yes, these divorce proceedings should not be played out in the Press.

On another note, Hunter's affair with his dead brother's wife has historical/political precedent: see Bobby Kennedy and Jackie O

[Hunter's] next big move came in May 2013 when he was appointed to a post in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a direct commission officer despite no prior experience.

Hunter was gone in less than a year though, booted in February 2014 for testing positive for cocaine.

Next, he grabbed a job at Burisma Holdings, joining the board of directors for the Ukrainian natural-gas company that is lousy with Russian sympathizers and supporters.

These days, he works at the investment banking and private investment firm Rosemont Seneca Partners.
Their offices are located in new York City and he lives in Washington DC.

Should documents like this be kept out of the public eye

I think there's a strong argument for doing so, especially with public figures. If the grievous claims are true, the injured spouse should get compensation by the court. If they are false, they are most likely being used to create an unjust leverage. Also, even if the grievous claims are proven to be false, an irreparable harm has been done.

Eh, drugs? diamond rings instead of $$ for the children? prostitutes? No big deal - Joe and Jill have given Hunter their complete blessing. And in lib/prog world, that's all that matters - as long as no one's last name is Trump.

I met a kid at the post office once. He was refilling the newspaper box outside.

"Want a free paper?" he asked. "I just got fired."

No, but in your next interview tell the guy how much you liked your last job, not how much you hated the boss. He's thinking you'll be saying this about him when you leave.

Don't burn any bridges.

"Thanks" the kid said.

They were in the public eye when they got trotted out for campaign events designed to make us think what a happy wholesome normal family the Bidens were and the Beau Biden funeral was given a lot of press, the family so noble and solemn and grieving (which to this last I'm sure they were but so what?). All this other stuff can be out in the public domain as well.

Lunch-bucket Joe made all this relevant and of public concern when he publicly supported his son's affair with his sister-in-law.

A "Kennedy lite" perhaps. Joe Kennedy left his sons one of the world's great fortunes. He was, at one time, one of the richest men in the world. Perhaps the richest.

His spawn have had to work their asses off to squander that fortune. They've done a pretty good job but there is still quite a bit left.

Biden never had that much to start with. A lot to you and me, perhaps. Not Kennedy/Gates/Slim/Buffett level wealth though. Not even Steve Jobs level wealth.

Re the $80m diamond. Is that how much they paid for it? If so, it is probably more like a $20m diamond. Diamonds lose most of their value the moment they leave the shop.

Joseph Epstein, who wrote a book about the economics of diamonds also wrote a good article that should be available online called "Have you ever tried to sell a diamond?" or somesuch.

OT but reminds me of an episode of Hard Core Pawn (the one in Detroit) Guy and his girl are in the store trying to buy a TV or something and don't have enough money.

She offers to pawn her earings that he gave her. Supposedly diamonds mounted in gold or the like.

They tell her they are plastic stones mounted in potmetal and probably cost $10.

Her reaction was very... err.. dramatic. Poor guy.

I agree that this little mess is why Diamond Joe didn't run.

Another question about rich people divorces? Why do people try to maintain their economic and social status? You are dividing a household in two. You will be less well off because of it, no matter how in the right you are about getting a divorce.

Freeman Hunt said...

Why is any of this in the news? It's not about Biden; it's about his adult relatives. Low bar for being considered public figures.

In general, divorce documents should sealed. I don't see anything in the Biden divorce case that should obviate that general rule.

Bay Area Guy,

"Historical precedent"? Think Henry VIII.

Joe Biden isn't "dead broke," as HRC said she was on leaving the White House, but he is one of the relatively few politicians who haven't inherited, married, or otherwise hosed up millions. I mean, c'mon, dude famously takes Amtrak. He is not up to spotting his wife-in-law $17K a month. Probably not even $7.5K. The former figure is close to the salary he's no longer getting.

I remember when I had to live on $90k a year ($7500 a month). I mean, it was terrible.

Henry said...

Is that $7500 before or after taxes?

The problem with going from $17K to $7.5K is that the mortgage, schooling, and other expenses, are already baked in. It's not sad in some absolute sense that a person only has a $90K income. But losing 40% of your income means wild disruption.

This. Changing houses, schools, what services you can or cannot afford, what summer or enrichment programs your kid can or cannot participate in, and your generally lifestyle that drastically all at once would be a pretty big deal, especially if it's only because one of the parents has gone wild. Get a hold of yourself, man!

All of those changes are on top of the huge change that a divorce represents in itself.

I mean, I hear what you're saying, but this is a divorce, right? "Wild disruption" is pretty much what it is, no? I'm not arguing that anyone should make things worse than they have to be, but it'd be silly to say that "wild disruption" is unexpected in, you know, a divorce. It's a bad thing, right? A disruptive thing. Things change--it'd be weird to say that everyone has an absolute duty to keep things the same, to their own detriment to any degree, while the divorce itself happens.

From Wikipedia's Hunter Biden entry:

On April 18, 2014, Burisma Holdings announced Biden's appointment to the board of directors in a press release.[15] Burisma is the largest non-governmental gas producer in Ukraine, it was incorporated in 2006 and is based in Limassol, Cyprus - a European tax haven.[16][17] Burisma holds licenses covering the Dnieper-Donets Basin, the Carpathian and Azov-Kuban basins and has considerable reserves and production capability.[18] Burisma was founded by Mykola Zlochevsky, the former minister of energy minister and deputy national security council chair under Viktor Yanukovych, in 2006.[19] Burisma Holdings is owned and controlled by the Ukrainian businessman Nikolay Zlochevskyi.[20][21] Joining Hunter Biden on the Burisma Board of Directors is Aleksander KwaÅ›niewski, named in January.[22] KwaÅ›niewski was President of the Republic of Poland from 1995 to 2005 during the G. W. Bush presidency.[23] Chairman of Burisma is the Wall Street former Merrill Lynch investment banker Alan Apter. Finally, Burisma also at the same time named to the board Devon Archer, Hunter Biden’s partner at the US investment firm, Rosemont Seneca Partners, and a manager of the family wealth fund of Secretary of State John Kerry’s wife Theresa Heinz Kerry, widow of H. John Heinz III. Archer also sits on the board of the family’s Howard J. Heinz trust. So with these two board appointments in April, Burisma gained the son of the Vice President of the United States and the financial adviser to the family of the Secretary of State. In April 2014, Burisma Holdings appointed Vadym Pozharskyi -- who used to be a GEF Focal point in Ukraine as well as the Deputy Head of the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine-- for a position of an Advisor to the Board of directors.

Hunter Biden's father Joe Biden traveled to Kiev on April 22, 2014 and urged the Ukraine government "... to reduce its dependence on Russia for supplies of natural gas."[24] And he discussed how the United States could help provide technical expertise for expanding domestic production of natural gas.[25] Some accuse the United States of maneuvering the Ukraine situation so that Western oil companies have unfettered access to shale gas (from "fracking") and to drill all across the Ukraine. With the revelations that Hunter Biden serves on the board of the Ukrainian company Burisma, many raised concerns about Hunter Biden's interests conflicting with official US government positions. The White House has dismissed nepotism charges against Biden's son.[26][27] But the director of the US-Ukraine Business Council Morgan Williams pointed to an "American tradition that frowns on close family members of government working for organizations with business links to active politics". Williams stated Biden appears to have violated this unwritten principle: "... when you're trying to keep the political sector separate from the business sector, and reduce corruption, then it's not just about holding down corruption, it's also the appearance."[28]
