"As I previously mentioned on the show last year, there would be times I would be taking off from the show to deal with a medical issue."

"This is why I’ve been out recently and will be out this week as well. But I will be back taking your calls as soon as I can."

Wrote Alan Colmes on January 30th.

Locked out of the story...but I can't believe all the people my age or younger passing away, when I've known so many older who kept on going into their late 80s. It's getting damn right morbid.

I'm really sorry to see this. Didn't often agree with him but I liked him.

He was the brother-in-law of Monica Crowley. It seemed to me that he always disagreed on an issue just because it wasn't the liberal view.

He was always a pleasant adversary for Sean Hannity. RIP, Alan. Condolences to you family and friends.

I never agreed with Colmes and often found him annoying but I think he was a good guy. May he rest in peace and blessings to his family.

He occasionally made a sensible argument. Condolences to the family.

Mr. Colmes was a punching bag for Hannity. I used to think that the democrats could make better arguments than those Mr. Colmes made until I started to find places like this blog that made me realize that, no, they can't.

Juan Williams is the current Alan Colmes.

Always insane lefty.

I watched him from time to time on Hannity & Colmes. Rarely agreed with him, but unlike many folks whose politics are based on emotion, he made a case for the way he thought that was understandable. An honest man and a loss in the commentator realm since almost everyone else sharing his perspective seems to have lost the ability to debate and convince.

Anonymous said...

May Alan rest in peace. He was decent fellow.

(As for his commentary on FNC, a few years ago he made a Clintonian confession on the air when he admitted to receiving the democrat talking points every morning but he didn't read them. Nuff said)

That's funny because I've often thought that Fox News dug up the lamest liberals they could find so they could destroy them. Then I watched CNN for a while. :-D

I was relieved when Hannity went solo because by the time H&C ended Colmes was like a guy cornered in the ring and just absorbing punch after punch. He always gamely defended the indefensible. He was the guileless fool -- a utopian who could not exist in a world unprotected by non utopians. He had the virtue of not being an Alinskyite. He had the misfortune of being called upon to defend them.

Yes. Colmes was too young to die at 66 but my father died 2 months before his 66th birthday. It happens.

Where, oh where, will we ever find another lefty for this now-empty seat?

I liked Colmes. He and Hannity had a nice show way back when.

He was wrong about many things, but he was always agreeable and interesting. He seemed like a kind-hearted, well-intended soul, at least to me. Rest in Peace

My youngest brother died at 59 last month, bad liver and two other siblings died before reaching age 70. Liver disease is a growing problem and will become more apparent in the next few years.

Pretty sad. I've rarely heard much from him.

I always have a weird appreciation for FNC liberals though. You need good counterarguments to avoid things just devolving into a dull echo chamber of stuffy harrumphing (obviously, many would argue that that's all Fox News is anyway). As much as they can be annoying, the arguments need to at least be presented in as rational a way as possible. I have no idea if characters like Juan Williams and Bob Beckel always make the best arguments for the liberal side though. I mean, the few liberal commenters around here seem to make better arguments at times then those guys. But maybe I'm just biased toward written words over spoken ones.

He was still a young man, regrettably. If only the huge sums governments spend on armaments, were instead invested in the teaching of ethics to, and the education of our youth, and the conquering of disease. Was Colmes a foil to the obnoxious Hannity, or was he fodder? My recollection of him on Fox's Hannity & Colmes, was that he was mainly grist for Hannity's voluble mill. Even so, Hannity remains a faux intellectual, with dubious morality, who gives aid and comfort to the enemy of humanity (Trump). Why Colmes succumbed to illness, and while Hannity rakes in millions is like asking why evil exists. We, collectively, need to produce better people leading to better, more just outcomes. Alan Holmes was a much better person than either Hannity or Trump.

Colmes was my age, born the same year, which always makes me think about my own mortality. At our age, death is still a rarity, but after watching my parents' generation pass, I know that it will speed up, as time seems to, as we age, until it is our turn.

Always felt a little sorry for him, RIP. He always came across as the tame leftist at Fox, willing to gamely, maybe even joyfully, get bludgeoned by the conservatives (esp, of course, Hannity) there. And that meant that he had to maintain his composure in the face of the onslaught, and not go into a blithering breakdown, as we see so many leftists do when having to face logic, and not be able to argue on the basis of emotion. Juan Williams too fills this slot, but doesn't come across to me as being as vulnerable as Colmes did.

Hepatitis C, the chief problem these days, is almost 100% confined to baby boomers. It is not seen in younger or older patients.

We did not have reliable tests for it for years and now the younger generation seems to be avoiding the high rish behavior.

Bruce Hayden said...

I had forgotten Beckel, which made me think - Colmes, Williams , and Beckel are pretty close contemporaries. Is it just generational, or why can't Fox find younger leftists to take the progressive side of arguments?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the growing liver problem and as to Hepatitis C, there is now a cure for that disease and is becoming less of a problem.

"There seems to be little remaining doubt that sugar is bad for you. I’ve been reading Gary Taubes’ new book, The Case Against Sugar, and he draws a compelling connection between the spread of sugary foods and drinks and the explosive growth of disease like diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease."

I first heard Alan on a syndicated call in show on our local radio back in the 80's. He was absolutely batshit nuts on that show. Had he worked with Joe Pyne, Joe would have seemed like the voice of reason.

Then in the 90's he was on with Hannity. Not the same person at all. Still defending wrongthink but in a much less crazier way.

I've not seen or thought of him for years. I do have a good opinion of him from H&C.

RIP, Alan.

I do infectious diseases in Appalachia, and we have tons of young people with hep C (opioid use). Fortunately, pharma will donate the curative 12 weeks of therapy to those without insurance. The application process is a breeze.

Yes, I think this is what caused my sister and brother's cirrhosis because they didn't drink.

There are lots of problems whose solutions have nothing to do with money or politics. Maybe that's why we get so exercised about politics and taxes. We like to think that we're in control, but the mills of God grind on and we have very little effect on how the gears turn......He achieved a modicum of fame and, I presume, wealth. He is remembered kindly but those who knew him. He led a successful life. He missed out on old age. Not the worst deprivation in the world, but a pity nonetheless. RIP.

A 65 year old man has a life expectancy of around 20 years, which means half of the current 65 year old men will die before 85 and half after. Only about 1.67% of 65-69 year old men die each year. I think what makes it seems like more people are dying in their late 60's, early 70's is the fact that you never hear of the 98.3% of 66 year olds that did not die in their 66th year, only the ones who did.

I thought the Hep C rise was because until AIDS we didn't check blood to be transfused like we do now?

How are they getting it from the opioids?

Colmes did not express my political point of view but he was always a gentleman.
It is far from easy to be the designated punching bag on a "conservative" cable news channel. Under great pressure Alan was always calm, dignified, measured and rational. A rare set of personality characteristics for a liberal under assault.
I didn't agree with his positions but I found myself always respecting them.

If you think it would be easy to be a Juan Williams you are underestimating the difficulty and skills necessary to be an effective and articulate participant in often passionate, and occasionally, unruly discussions.

Mr. Colmes...R.I.P.

Brenda was much younger, 56 I believe, and it seems like she was a beautiful person and loved by many. I enjoyed watching her host Bulls and Bears on Sat mornings with her infectious smile.
Cavuto's tribute on monday was really a nice and was hard to watch as he brought the show to a close..Godspeed

While I did not share many of his political opinions, I believe that he was a decent man, a patriot and a wonderful example of a caring liberal man. I will miss him. The highest tribute and kindest, genuine remark thaT I can summon forth is that he exemplified many of the best traits common to Christian warriors: brave, steadfast, honest, kind, cheerful, friendly, curious, creative, persistent, stoic and loyal to Fox and to his audience. The Fox family and clan has lost a valuable member of its host. May GOD bless him and cherish him.
