Trump chaos... as told by the NYT.

I don't trust the NYT to tell the story straight, so I'm picking my way "Trump Staff Shake-Up Slows Transition to Near Halt" looking for bits of real news and cherry picking evidence of bias:
President-elect Donald J. Trump’s transition operation plunged into disarray on Tuesday with the abrupt resignation of Mike Rogers, who had handled national security matters....

An aide to Mr. Trump’s transition team who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal matters said that the delay was taking place because the wording of [a legal document required to conduct the transition] was being altered and updated, and that it was likely to be signed later Tuesday.

Still, the slow and uncertain start to what is normally a rapid and meticulously planned transfer of power could have profound implications for Mr. Trump’s nascent administration, challenging the efforts of the president-elect to gain control of the federal bureaucracy and begin building a staff fully briefed on what he will face in the Oval Office on Day 1.

The chaos caught the attention of some senior Republicans who criticized Mr. Trump during his campaign but said after he won that they would not necessarily rule out joining his administration or advising him....

The turmoil at the highest levels of his staff upended months of planning and preparation for a process that many describe as drinking from a fire hose even in the most orderly of circumstance....
So... Rogers left and they're finishing that legal document. But: disarray, chaos, turmoil...

I'm utterly jaded by the emotive prose from the NYT.

By the way, who is Mike Rogers? Here's Bret Baier and panelist Laura Ingraham talking about him on November 11th:
"Here's a candidate [Trump] who ran in part on the Benghazi issue. You've got the 13 Hours guys that endorsed Donald Trump. And you've got a guy running your national security transition that comes under fire from conservatives over Benghazi," Baier said.

"The 13 Hours guys were infuriated, fuming when that report came out, because the report basically called their integrity into question—said that these heroes were doing it just to sell a book," Ingraham added.
Watch the video at that link. If you're a Trump supporter, I don't think you'll feel bad losing Mike Rogers.

Oh, what a crock of shit. Transitions are not "rapid & meticulous".

I was tasked by my then employer to provide computer support to the Bush I transition team. I was with them (aside from time off for Christmas) for every day from the election victory until a few days before inauguration.

Now, remember, this was a rare Republican to Republican transition made by a sitting vice-president. The primary emotion on the floor: fear. Fear of getting backstabbed, fear of not getting a position in the administration at all after all the work that you had put in on the campaign, fear that you'd get a position that was basically twiddling your thumbs for the next four years, etc. When I told them I was taking vacation to visit my parents for Christmas, they were aghast, because they were all scared that if they left for a few days, they'd get screwed out of something. I told them "Guys, I'm a contractor. I am not getting & will not ever get a position in the Bush administration. I'm the hired help, & you'll have someone here to support you over Christmas, just not me." "Well, OK...."

Transitions are snake pits, with factions & personalities jockeying for positions in the nastiest manner imaginable. "Rapid & meticulous", my left butt cheek!

So I guess there are now three MSM stories about the Trump transition process:
1) Trump picks experienced DC hand proving that he has been captured by insiders and was conning everybody who voted for him:
2) Trump picks an outsider who is deplorable, proving that he means to put all the racist, sexist, xenophobic inferences we drew from his campaign into practice;
3) Trump has not yet selected anybody for a position, proving that his team is unprepared and in disarray.

There. Now you don't have to read the NYT for the next two months.

There was a memorable story about how Jimmy Peanuts' Georgia crackers went about filling in administration positions with post-it notes on a whiteboard.

YoungHegelian said...

Another thing to remember about transition teams: people on them often have to decide if they want to now 1) work 60 hours a week for the next four years 2) commute to DC from wherever, & not see your wife & family except on weekends for four years or 3) uproot your wife from her job & your kids from school to move them to an uncertain future in DC for four years.

Quite a few people, especially at the second & third tiers or below, say "Thanks, but no thanks" when the reality sinks in.

By the way, notice that we get all the skinny on the Trump transition team horrors, but we still don't know why Hillary didn't come down to the Javits Center election night to say goodbye to her supporters. Funny how that is...

The media's response to their terrible reporting is to double down.

It's going to be a very long four to eight years.

Part of the genius of the media doing this is, eventually, people get tired of the drama. And if we will just hire a Democrat, the media will tamp down on the drama. It's a threat that no one really recognizes as such. We feel it's truth rather than consciously see what is happening.

Just more of the disparaging garbage the MSM is trying to pedal like the whole 'Trump has to hire ~4000 people' thing implying that caught him and his transition team by surprise... and Obama is going to have to spend a lot more of his time than previous presidents to 'school' Trump on what it takes to be president.

When Obama was elected, the NYT called his transition "the best ever." It took them until, as they put it, "15% of his Presidency has expired" before they noticed there were problems.

from the NYT Aug. 23 2009:
"WASHINGTON — As President Obama tries to turn around a summer of setbacks, he finds himself still without most of his own team. Seven months into his presidency, fewer than half of his top appointees are in place advancing his agenda.

Of more than 500 senior policy making positions requiring Senate confirmation, just 43 percent have been filled.
“If you’re running G.M. without half your senior executives in place, are you worried? I’d say your stockholders would be going nuts,” said Terry Sullivan, a professor at the University of North Carolina and executive director of the White House Transition Project, which tracks appointments."

Putting so much extra effort into something that was anticipated to be all fun and games and happy times only to have to keep fighting and losing for months and monthsw and months. Then the final realization as election night went on that it was really true, she was losing and not going to recover, and that all the investigative problems are still there, and that she is too old to try again, and that all the influence and power her and Bill had will slip away. Sometimes it takes effort not to feel sorry for her. Not a lot of effort, but some.
Can't blame her for being pissed off, throwing stuff, or even drunk.

But this all is true for every politician that makes it into the position of credibly running for President. They nearly all have had life-long careers of struggle, and losing is likewise a final, cruel disappointment. Hilary Clinton struggled no more than Mitt Romney, Al Gore, John McCain, GHW Bush, Michael Dukakis or John Kerry, and much less than some of these - Kerry for instance, was in the wings much longer. And yet, none of these skipped a concession speech and giving a grateful despedida to their partisans, on the very night of defeat. There is an expectation of grace under pressure, even for the rejected man.

Bill Peschel said...

Ann, there is no reason to believe anything the Times publishes, thanks to two articles.

First, here's former NYT reporter Michael Ceiley at the Hollywood Reporter, talking about who decides what is news at the paper:

"By and large, talented reporters scrambled to match stories with what internally was often called 'the narrative.' We were occasionally asked to map a narrative for our various beats a year in advance, square the plan with editors, then generate stories that fit the pre-designated line.

"Reality usually had a way of intervening. But I knew one senior reporter who would play solitaire on his computer in the mornings, waiting for his editors to come through with marching orders. Once, in the Los Angeles bureau, I listened to a visiting National staff reporter tell a contact, more or less: 'My editor needs someone to say such-and-such, could you say that?'

"The bigger shock came on being told, at least twice, by Times editors who were describing the paper's daily Page One meeting: 'We set the agenda for the country in that room.'"

Next, we've seen reporters running quotes by the Clinton campaign in Wikileaks? They've always passed that off as "trying to be accurate."

This time, New York Times reporter Mark Leibovich recorded an interview with Hillary Clinton, who said, “gay rights has moved much faster than women’s rights or civil rights, which is an interesting phenomenon somebody in the future will unpack.”

She said some other things about Sarah Palin and eating moose meat.

Leibovich then sent Podesta etal the transcript of the interview indicating the quotes he wanted to use, and asked them to decide what will go into the New York Times.

They nixed the gay rights and Palin remarks. (Scroll to the bottom)
