The last night of the convention.

What are you looking for?

Watch with me. Comment!

Politico has what's purported to be Trump's speech, here. But I'm not interested in reading it in advance. It's all in the delivery, no?

UPDATE: Why is the speech so long? To displace the commentators?

AND: You know who gave a famously long speech? Bill Clinton.

This speech doesn't play to Trump's strengths. He is a funny, likable guy who has been painted as a demagogue. In this speech he does in fact resemble a demagogue. Sometimes people don't understand their own strengths, and weaknesses. Set the real Donald Trump free!

We have a back to back eight year comparison: compare what W started w/ and what he left to what BHO started w/ and what he left. Tell me how R policies worked better.

Tell me about it. But you're preaching to the wrong crowd here on that one. To Republicans, facts and evidence are a betrayal of their party's cause. It's all about believing the right things, and there is no truer test to belief in the Republican cause than dismissing the facts. Facts and evidence are just not the right fit for their party. They will change the facts to fit their beliefs, and are convinced that you should, too.

Calling the government implementing deregulation, is not what most folks think of when they're talking about government involvement. This is more accurately described as un-government caused.

I am so weary of this completely incorrect assessment of what happened.

First of all - what got "deregulated"? Name something you were allowed to do, financially, during the Bush administration, that you couldn't do during the Clinton administration. That aside - how was the mortgage industry "deregulated"? Are you saying there was no government involvement in the mortgage industry? Every bank that lent money for mortgages was pushed into it by the CRA and other government edicts. Go ahead, loan money to your heart's content, don't worry if people welch, we at the Fed will back it up.

Well, they did welch, and the government then turned the blame SQUARELY on the banks for making loans they shouldn't have. Well, they wouldn't have if the government hadn't said they'd back them.

You believe in an alternate history, one where Spock has a beard. In our universe, everything that happened in 2008 was directly related to behaviors that the government not only condoned, but agitated banks to follow.

If the President nominates, and the Senate consents to the nomination, the president still must appoint the confirmed nominee. The president can change his mind after the Senate confirms the nomination and decide not to appoint the nominee.

Read my link up thread. It goes through the actual numbers to compare the impacts of public re private bad loans.

You are repeating lies that can be proven wrong by looking at the data.

The banking deregulation occurred mostly during Reagan and WJC, as I noted up-thread.

But, W did put a deregulator in charge of OTS. This is the regulatory that was looser such that Country Wide and WaMu adjusted so they could be overseen by this more deregulated agency. How'd that work out?

Trump is trying to reach beyond his immediate supporters without abandoning his base. He's going through a list of problems which Democrats say don't exist in order to build a coalition based on a widespread reform which the current American situation requires rather than a coalition based on reforms solely relating to certain historic grievances connected with race and gender. Concentrating on certain historic problems all the time has resulted in ignoring other, newer problems which have become quite serious. These newer problems - e.g. loss of manufacturing jobs since 1997, inner city children trapped in failing schools, declining national security - affect all races and solutions will improve all lives.

Many of these problems are summed up as "globalization" or perhaps one should say "laissez faire globalization" which Trump is promising to oppose. Anyhow that's how I see Trump's speech. The media reaction is meaningless because it will mostly reflect ugly trivial minds projecting themselves onto Trump. The reaction of the country will take while to emerge.

Freedoms of speech with certain friends and relatives: we cannot discuss politics and need "safe words" to deflect discussions.

Although Obama didn't start it, I have noticed curtailments of my 2nd amendment rights in CA compared to what I enjoyed as a boy in WI. Obama and Hillary are fully on board with these infringements.

Regulations aren't generic, PB&J. An increase in the number of regulations does not mean "better" regulation, any more than a decrease in regulations means "worse" regulation. Regulations are a compromise, usually between growth and risk.
That is entirely fact based and logical.
"Regulation" is not a magic word; the federal government was heavily regulating the mortgage market both before and after the crash. Money seeks growth, so it tries to go into high growth areas of the economy. If banks can shift the risk onto the government while it reaps the rewards, money will go into that sector.

I see that the revolving door is going between Elizabeth Warren's CFPB and the finance industry. The CFPB is budgeted by treasury, not congress, it has minimal oversight by the people's representatives. The financial houses must be drooling at the thought of what they can do by controlling its actions. Money loaned to poor borrowers (e.g. high risk) for social and political reasons, with the government picking up the tab when they default. It's a new frontier for creative and ambitious bankers.

Equal pay for equal work is a conservative principle. The liberal principle is equal pay for equivalent work, and government must define equivalent. Not the same thing at all. Under liberal principles, trash collectors would earn less then social workers because social workers must have a degree and trash collectors don't. Under the current system, social workers are a dime a dozen, and paid accordingly. What motivates a trash collector to get up early in the morning in all kinds of weather to collect other people's garbage is the paycheck. It's large enough to draw in people willing to do the job, but apparently not large enough to gat a social worker to apply for the job instead of bitching that a trash collector makes more then they do.

Businessmen have a different wage principle in play. Pay the least amount they can to get someone to do the work that needs to get done for the company to thrive.

I think the bigger problem is that trash collectors can't do their jobs in Birkenstocks. Social worker types love their Birks. Not to be confused with the Mrs. Trump de jour types who love their Birkins.

Hmm, Trump doesn't seem to have a problem with Erdogan's purge of all opposition. Yeah, I think I'm not voting for anybody for President.

What convention is this?

Why is an old New York liberal the Republican nominee for President?

Remember, the anti-establishment Trump supporters are citing McConnell's complaints about Cruz. Because they are so anti-establishment.

The unemployment numbers are great for folks w/ college degrees.

Not by any known economic stat.

There is in fact a substantial recovery.

Explains why interest rates are still at around 0. Because this is a "substantial recovery".

Democrats haven't had a new idea in twenty years. And sitting on my bookshelf here in my home office is a book titled Hope is not a Strategy. It's the one by Ted Gee, subtitled "Simple Solutions for Doing Business in The 21st Century." A few years later John Mariotti and D.M. Lukas published another book titled Hope is not a Strategy " ... which uses the many mistakes and failures of Barack Obama’s first term as illustrative examples for leadership lessons to be learned. The mistakes and failures during Obama’s presidency are nearly all traceable to his fundamental leadership and experience shortcomings."

I thought it was a good speech. No he doesn't have telepolish of O but you know he could probably talk just as long off the cuff. The prompter use was to keep him from winging it, which would have been fine for the room but not for the national audience, many of whom this would be the first time to listen to Trump.

I liked his LGBTQXYZ... talk. Really, most of us really don't care about other people's lifestyles. He, by that section, put BS to party platform nonsense. The Repub party should ditch the whole platform process because their platform is reviewed with a fine tooth comb for anything the MSM can use to whack them while overt nonsense in the Demo platform is ignored.

I am glad that he spoke of doing something to help the minority communities to improve their safety and their education prospects. This addresses the real racism problem of conservative and libertarians - the sin of omission. Faced with a system set to punish anyone who tells the truth, most people demure and think "fine, let them live that way." Trump can tell the truth and lead the Republicans to a new wave of breaking people away from slavery.

Amazing the silly nonsense in some comments here about "recovery". Recessions end. Most of them end quickly. This one ended very slowly. That's bad. The president doesn't get credit for that.
Greg Mankiw asked this question before the first stimulus bill, back around 2009: how are you going to find out if it worked? Nothing obvious happened as a result. Does that mean we wasted 3/4 of a trillion dollars? Or would it have been worse otherwise? Or should the stimulus have been five times bigger (a la Paul Krugman)? No one knew then, or now.
The financial collapse was under a Democratic Congress - do they get the blame? Most of the recovery was under a Republican Congress - do they get the "credit"? Or is only the president that counts?
If Pres. Bush had left office just before the collapse, would he have gotten credit for eight years of uninterrupted prosperity, and the collapse would be Pres. Obama's fault? Oddly enough, that's what people say about the dot-com collapse, which was just after Pres. Clinton's tenure. He gets the credit for prosperity, meaning, the internet grew up when he was president. Not that any government entity had much to do with that.
All ridiculous.

Time for that after the Democrat convention and Crooked Hillary is locked in as his opponent.

Trump doesn't seem to have a problem with Erdogan's purge of all opposition.

Actually, what Trump seems to have is a problem with is the USA riding in like the calvary whenever a despot anywhere in the Middle East decides to kill some of their own citizens. Despots are always murdering their own citizens – and torturing them – real torture, not waterboarding. To respond as we have in the past, to chase these unicorns and rainbows all over the Middle East every time this happens is an endless, thankless, expensive task. Knee-jerk regime changes and forcing Western style democracy down their throats has proven not to be the answer.

Other than cheering on rebelling democratic elements from afar, as long as they leave us and our allies alone we should stay out of their internal conflicts.

Not opposing it is supporting it in Trump World, much like not endorsing Trump is supporting his opponent in Trump World.

Simply saying "The man is a tyrant and Europe needs to deal with the issue" would be a solid response.

A lot of people seem to forget what, precisely, Bush was given.

Dot-com meltdown. 9/11 slaughtered markets. A month and a half later, Enron goes under and we are stuck with the largest accounting scandal in recent history. Numbers for large companies were audited by companies that didn't even try to handle their jobs honestly. An outright collapse of the entire economic system wasn't impossible in those days at all.

Bush punished the wrong-doers --- Obama never did that --- showing that violation of the law is illegal, no matter your connections. He refused to bail out Enron when they came begging for money. He turned the economy around impressively, while getting literally no credit for anything.

Obama took over an economy after the bottom had dropped. The nadir was already reached. And he proceeded to try and kill the recovery in any way he could. And people are criticized for noting that the recovery and economy are terrible --- as I've asked repeatedly, how can a strong and robust economy have interest rates at ZERO because a fear of any increase would kill the economy?

Interesting. The comments were flooded by the left last night. But not really the paid Crooked Hillary shills, but more by the ones who have popped in here over the last year or so, but, except for Chuckles, haven't been that active. Obvious plan was to denigrate whatever Trump et al. were able to accomplish.

Funniest to me was the attempt to tar Trump as a pervert with his daughter. Funny, because they are going to be voting a well known pervert and sexual preditor to the White House, whom we can now also honestly call a pediphile after all his trips with Jeffry Epstein to his Pediphile Island (some of which he ditched his Secret Service detail to attend). Called false equivalents, and is something the left here is good at.

The attempts to try to whitewash Obama's and the Dems' economic record was somewhat pathetic. What they want us to forget is that the economy is cyclic, and was in the process of falling off the cliff into a recession when Obama took office. Of course we have recovered. That is what happens after recessions. It is only when you have Dem Presidents with strong Dem majorities in Congress that it doesn't happen automatically and reasonably quickly. This is the longest and one of the worst recoveries since their last big try with FDR. And a lot of that is because they ignore what we learned about Keynesian stimulus after it was tried in (but greatly lengthened) the Great Depression, and that is that government spending only works as a stimulus as you go into a recession. After that, it gets built into expectations, and takes capital away from (and slows) the expansion. How do we know this? Because Speaker Pelosi repeatedly told us, in glee, how the Dems were going to use govt spending to buy our way out of the recession, and since it was govt spending that mattered, they were going to spend like no tomorrow on their pet projects, making no all their friends and cronies filthy rich (including, of course, her family). They seemed to get that the last time massive amounts of borrowed money was spent to try to spend our way out of a recession resulted in the Great Depression, but missed that the spending then turned a minor recession into more than a decade of depression and misery.

Hell, at this point, starting your own business is almost a fool's errand. Paying out the nose and having to comply with just ridiculous amounts of regulations now. It's downright tragic.

...unless you're an abortion provider. Then, any regulation is illegal.

But real businesses, large companies --- who give to Democrats heavily --- have utterly tilted the field against small companies.

Several physicians in my family and my daughter, who works in a medical office, can identify with this as they struggle to keep their offices open when more and more staff is required to handle all the new regulations and bureaucratic mess that providers face today. This is an effort to force them to be swallowed up by the mega-providers, the large corporations. We will be very short of physicians in the very near future. They are already importing more than are being graduated from med school.
