Hillary's new slogan: We Are Stronger Together.

In an interview on "Meet the Press" this morning, Chuck Todd seemed to needle Hillary Clinton about her lack of a big campaign theme:
Bernie Sanders has been talking about a political revolution. A future you can believe in. Obviously, Donald Trump with the Make America Great Again, is one of these slogans that has taken off, for better or for worse. If you could sum up, what is the big idea of your candidacy?
She was so ready with a new slogan that I can't believe there wasn't an understanding between Todd and the campaign that he'd give her an opportunity to unveil a new slogan. She said:
Look, we are stronger together. We are stronger together, in facing our internal challenges and our external ones. We are stronger together if we work to improve the economy. And that's going to mean trying to get the Republicans to do what will actually help produce more jobs, like we saw in the 1990s. We are stronger together when we have a bipartisan, even nonpartisan foreign policy that protects our country. And that provides a kind of steady, strong, smart leadership that the rest of the world expects from us. And I know that, you know, slogans come and go, and all the rest of it. But when I look at where we are in our country together, we need to unify the country. We are stronger together, when we act on a set of plans and priorities that will redound to the benefit of the American people.
What do you think? Bland and generic? Or: a heartfelt reaching out to the Americans who feel that the other candidates are tearing us apart?

Later, a panel discussion addressed the slogan. Alex Castellanos — the "veteran Republican strategist" — said it "sounds a little defensive" and makes us think about the "tremendous amount of political weakness" she's shown — "dragged" around by a "near-octogenarian socialist who honeymooned in Russia" and looking to "her husband... to bail her out on the economy."

MSNBC commentator Joy-Ann Reid was next, and she said she didn't really know what "We Are Stronger Together" means or "how it unites voters." She paused to sneer at Trump's slogan: it evokes "nostalgia that a certain kind of white, particularly white voter, has for a bygone era." And then she revealed her disappointment:
I think that it's good that the Clinton campaign are strategizing. But it's interesting that, in your interview, she seemed so much like a strategist. And so many of her answers felt like this is Hillary, the smart political strategist telling you what she intends to do, and it's still not giving her campaign sort of a driving dream, I think.
Chuck swooped in with a slogan of his own: "Change versus steadiness."

But I want to go back to Reid's disappointment: Hillary is "not giving her campaign sort of a driving dream."

Driving dream... To me, that calls up the spirit of Richard Nixon. From his 1970 State of the Union:
But let us, above all, recognize a fundamental truth. We can be the best clothed, best fed, best housed people in the world, enjoying clean air, clean water, beautiful parks, but we could still be the unhappiest people in the world without an indefinable spirit — the lift of a driving dream which has made America, from its beginning, the hope of the world.

HC, "'Make me both richer, and with a lotta power over everyone.' That about sums it up. That's a slogan that says it all, and you know, Chuck, I know that's what everyone wants. Everyone on my campaign staff agrees."

I watched that and it is interesting to see the growth in black racism under Obama.

She was almost spitting as she said "white voter." The Obama administration is really a kingdom of black achievers. You look at almost any Obama official and, except for defense, they are all black.

It's as if the Post Office was running the country.

I have seen nothing from Clinton or other liberal politicians to make me think that they believe We Are Stronger Together. They want the rest of us to give up our own principles and accept theirs.

Actually, the fasces idea works very well. She could use that. Makes a great visual, a fine prop, a nice ad. Easily break a white stick, take a bundle of white, black, brown, yellow sticks and fail to break them.
I doubt many today will remember the previous use. Education has been that bad.

It would also be truth in advertising.
The Democratic Party platform and track record resembles nothing so much as Mussolinis. The words and symbols are different, I suppose, and the overt militarism.
Still, symbols aside Mussolini was also lousy at being actually militaristic, Italy being poorly prepared for a real war when it came.
The Italian Fascists also had much better music, I'd take that first thing. Update Giovanezza and especially Faccetta Nera.
Italian Fascist racism also fits, being as it was largely (very)paternalistic benevolence. Faccetta Nera is a case in point. What Nazi would sing of love for his black girlfriend and promise to take her home with him? Untermenschen wasn't part of the picture.

Sounds pretty incoherent to me. Trump's slogan is a declaration of what he will do. Hillary's slogan is a bromide. Sure we are stronger together. Who would dispute that? But what does that have to do with Hillary? Is she going to unite us? Then she should say so.

"Bringing the country together" or "uniting the country" are slogans stating what she will do.

Of course, that leads to the thought of whether or not Hillary could unite the country.

I get the feeling that Trump thought up his slogan himself and had a bunch of hats made.

Hillary's campaign took two months and focus grouped her slogan, and it isn't nearly as good.

I watched the show and yes, everything was about race for Reid. Tellingly, when she appealed to the need to elect Hillary to advance the prosperity of minorities, she had no answer when Castellanos asked how Obama's policies have served minoritiy prosperity the last eight years.

How exactly would Hillary unite the country?

Half of the country hates her. The other half only tolerates her in order to get stuff. The solar industry and the Street would turn on her in a minute if they were getting a better deal somewhere else.

Hillary should just admit the reality of what's going on in the electorate. This is the slogan to do it: "I'm screwed."

HoodlumDoodlum said...

By the way, isn't an/the important question "what do you want to do with strength/power?" I mean, isn't that the thing we should want all candidates for President to answer?
We know it's a powerful office, and we know a leader who unites large portions of the country behind them (behind an individual, or a party, for example) will have quite a lot of power.

Power is a measure of work over time. What work does Hillary want done? That seems...important. D. Trump's slogan says what he wants to DO. It's vague, of course, but it's a slogan so imprecision is expected. Hillary's slogan doesn't tell you want she wants to DO--it implies only that she recognizes that a population is stronger/more powerful when it unites. That's true...but it's equally true of a band of pirates, the Mob, or a Boy Scout troop. "We can get more done when we work together." Yeah, but what are you trying to do? I want the Boy Scouts to work together, but I don't want criminals to work together to get better at stealing my stuff. See?

Anyway aren't the Leftist hippies supposed to be too free-minded, too individualistic, too "keep our city weird" to buy into a message of national unity? They're the ones who always make fun of unified groups, right? You know, Dittoheads, men in gray flannel suits, office drones, PC users, "little Eichmans," right?

Good Lord! Even a law professor could work that out. If "Captain Obvious" wasn't off shilling for Hotels.com I'd be certain he was working for the Clinton campaign.

First, I agree with Paul, that this slogan suggests -- at least to us educated folks -- the Roman fasces that Il Duce coopted for his symbol.

But secondly, Democrats generally win elections by setting people at each other's throats. Labor versus management, the young versus social security recipients, black versus honkies, gays versus straights, and so forth. So yet another case of Hillary saying one thing but doing (or planning to do) the opposite.

"Make America Great Again" misses being fascist because it is non-specific. It doesn't call for a return to a mythical past. On the contrary, many people remember a time when America was better for people like them than it is now. Half a century ago we were racing the Russians to the moon, and we won. Now we can't even launch a man into space. Flying used to be an adventure, now it is a dreadful chore (even if it is cheaper). State college tuition would set you back maybe a thousand bucks per year. In 1980, you stopped paying social security after you earned $26k. This year the limit is $118k.

"We are stronger together": stronger for what? A restatement of Lincoln's "A house divided against itself cannot stand"? "United we stand, divided we fall"? "All for one, one for all"?

Is it that after 8 years of Obama and Liberal Democrats working hard to divide the country along racial, ethnic, gender, and now economic class lines for the sake of their political fortunes, even Hillary has to admit voters are tired of it all? But how many people view Hillary as a uniter when every stump speech she delivers proves that she's not? Does the "together" part of her slogan include MEN as well as the women whose vote she expects out of gender loyalty? IMO, Hillary's slogan would work much better for Trump. Disaffected voters are more likely to believe Trump than they would ever trust Clinton after 8 years of Obama.

"We are stronger together". Sorry, not sorry, but what does that even mean? One can focus simply on "together". What does she mean by "together"? Not disagree with each other? Cooperate? Okay, fair enough, agree on what exactly, cooperate on what plan or agenda? Obama plays this card sometimes. Years ago someone scolded me for suggesting he did not "deserve" the Peace Prize. "Unite us, don't divide us!" were his exact words. I thought "okay, fine, how about I unite us around rule of law, republicanism, free market economics, the Constitution, and so on? or is that not what you had in mind?" Often it seems when the left talks about "unity" or "cooperation" or "conversation" that's code (ha ha) for "submit to, cooperate with my agenda, listen to me talk and occasionally listen while I enlighten you to my point of view". In a way, that is the rhetoric of the environment in which I currently work. We keep having "conversations", the more heated the better! steering us in a particular direction.

I think a number of the later posters here have a good point. The Obama Administration came into power by slicing and dicing the electorate as finely as they could. That was their explicit strategy. Blacks, Hispanics, unwed mothers, college educated millenuals, etc. all played off against white males, who are considered safe to hate and exploit. Hillary seems determined to try to duplicate Obama's strategy in order to follow him into office. Which is why this slogan is ridiculous for her campaign. It is pretending to do the exact opposite of what she really plans to do, and is already doing. The cognitive dissonance there is probably enough for this to blow up in her face all by itself, but I have little doubt that master marketer and communicator Donald Trump will be able to exploit the inherent contradictions in this strategy quite well. Likely another unforced error on her part.

That kind of guy the little girl millenials, who've not figured out what is FEMINISM yet, think their juicy old daddy man will take care of them, with his revolution fantasies, is not the MAN he pretends to be, shacked up old lady, she brings home the bacon, bears his out of wed lock child, and his second official wife, kills her Burlington college while president, her tenure has the whole faculty walking on eggshells, unfair, she made them all paranoid, then invests in land to expand the school, WHICH HAS CLOSED THE DOORS, PERMANENTLY, KILLED DEAD BY HER VERY...VERY BAD INVESTMENT IN LAND THEY COULD NOT DUMP. BANKRUPTCIES, LIKE THE CARNIVAL BARKER, HUCKSTER TRUMP....CON MAN, AND BERNIE, just his sexist obscene three men on one woman rape fantasy, excuse me??? Why would we need men like that looking after us??? Trump fantasy, his own daughter SO HOT "I would be dating her!" Emotional incest, infidelity, how many women,??? Bernie, fed, housed, and clothed by wives and shack ups, his first paycheck, job as mayor, just hustling his educational film strips, cash for carpentry, writing crap, and so, we got two testosterone driven hucksters, hustling everyone, but I say, "She's got MY back!" About Hillary.

The slogan and her "H" with the axe on the side are both fascist. The H is the fasces and the slogan of "stronger together" matches the fascist idea of "strength through unity" symbolized by the rods bound around the axe head. What doofus came up with this theme?
